Have you noticed your door slamming shut when it used to close smoothly? Why is the door slamming? Why isn’t the door latching shut like it used to?
The answer could be simply a change in the season or weather! Door closers (the mechanical piece mostly found at the top corner of the door) should be checked in every season and adjusted as the weather changes.
Why does the weather affect your door closer? Inside of the door closer is hydraulic fluid. The change in cold or hot weather can can affect the hydraulic fluid and lead to a loss of pressure.
This can easily be adjusted on the closer itself by adjusting the following areas.
Most Door Closers have a few simple adjustments:
1. Back Check (last 5-15 degrees of the door opening)
2. Swing Speed (from an open position to the last 5-15 degrees during closing
3. Latching Speed (last 5-15 degrees of the door closing)
4. Spring Strength (how much power or resistance the door closer has)

Thank you for teaching us how to fix this kinda gizmo. My apartment is next to the emergency stairs, and that fireproof door kept slamming and making a terrible noise inside my unit. I just went over there and fixed it. Maintenance couldn’t even figure it out. I feel like MacGiver.
I know this was posted 4 years ago, but damn, so helpful. Our apartment block has a hydraulic powered pedestrian gate, which of course very few people can actually close on their own. Now I know all the terms and the approach I need to take so thank you

This was really useful. My interior garage door was slamming so hard it shook the house. It took me a while to get it right but it's much better now. You are absolutely right about the adjustments, very small adjustments make a big difference.
I am in the same situation but renting. If the Landlord does not resolve it, I am getting my tools out. The door slams like someone keyed the Hulk's porsche and he is leaving the house super pissed.
@@mediacenterman8583 Just do it. You can't actually break anything. The cover, if it has one, comes off with one screw. All the adjustments have limits so if you make a mistake it's easy to fix. I lived with it for six months and fixed it in 10 minutes. I even dialled in a pauze which I was really proud of. Don't be like me and wait six months. Haha
There is a possibility that you may cause some damage to the closer. Read the manuals.
Usually don't loosen up the speed valves too much.
Mine said more than 2 full turns loosening might cause oil to leak.

this video gave me the confidence to take a look at my apartment buildings fire door! it would shake my unit ever time someone entered the building (and apparently no one considers NOT letting the door slam behind them 🙄) i only needed a flathead screwdriver to tighten 1 screw! no cover to remove! thank you!!
Someone recently adjusted a door I share a wall with so it slammed shut all of a sudden, went on for a few months till I just saw this, simple fix, thanks so much.

Going to try this. Thank you. I live right over the garage entry and we have a self-closer with fire door and when it slams, it sounds like a bomb Going off in my room. I keep telling people they have to be careful, especially because they wake me up, but they keep doing it. Much easier to try and adjust the door closer than my inconsiderate family 🙄

I adjusted mine perfectly and it took several adjustments.
Now it closes completely but doesn't slam shut , and that is exactly what it's supppsed to do.

I have looked all over this device for the adjustment screws and I am unable to even locate a model (make?) for it to look for a manual. What am I missing? are all closer adjustments allen, sloted or phillips? Or do I need to look for cap of some kind? It's the first one I've seen with no obvious adjustments (it slams.)
I have a Daihutsu Model 72 door closer. Pl inform what is the function of a screw that is at the back of the door closer. This screw is in the base and flushes with the door panel when installed

My adjustment screws use a flat head screwdrive. Please, does tightening or loosening the screws make the door close slower? There are no diagrams on my model. Please help!
Test it either way
Tightening will usually cause it to slow down

Thank you! My door closer is old and only appears to have a swing speed adjustment. This worked for one of the doors! However, for another door, the latching speed is way too powerful. Is this adjustment hidden? Or maybe this model doesn't have it?

Could you do a video where you show when the door closer is adjusted it slams, then adjusting it so it doesnt? A before and after type thing. What causes it to slam? A loose screw? Too tight?
Kai - typically when a door is slamming it's because the adjustment screws are too loose or the fluid has leaked out of the closer. Thanks for the feedback, we will work on additional videos of this.

What if it leaks oil? What can I do?
Other than mentioning one small detail, this video isn't too bad.
The tools you may need to do the actual adjustment are an allen wrench or a slotted screw driver, (depending on the model of closer) and a phillips style screwdriver.

Before watching this video, the FIRST thing you should know is if you remove one of the screws too far, it will spurt oil all over the place and likely destroy your nice door closer. Sadly, that warning was given at the end of the video. Since I was working as I listened along, I heard the man say it just AFTER the oil went splooshing all over the place. 😑😕

Is it just me or did you forget to show Spring Power? You mention it as one of 4 adjustments but only show the other 3. I made those adjustments but the door is still too heavy to open.

in my building there are some doors with no adjusters on the sides or bottom, would they be on top of the device?
Yes. It is possible. Each closer manufacturer has the adjustments in a slightly different place. But you should have at least 2 adjustments, closing and latch speed.
@@locdocinc yes i got on a step stool and saw the it has 3 adjusters on the top. Seems to be allen key, think its a 9mm or 11/32 size cause i tried everything else.

It should always close yes, you can adjust it so it wont do anything but then you may aswell just take off the door closer as your stopping it doing its only purpose.

You didn't explain the spring adj.
I had installed door closer there is no problem while closing but it’s hard to open door.
Adjust the back check to make the door easier to open
Tell that to my Mnager at work that keep busting my door frame to dont let the door slam .....
What can be done if the fluid has leaked out?
The unit would need to be replaced!

Mine is Squeaking/Creaking at a Certain Opening/Closing Point, can anybody give Me a Suggestion on Stopping it making a Noise!, i know Oil seems an obvious Solution but the Mechanism is solid & hard to get to.

How embracing to make a video and show everyone that he has no idea how to install a door closer,
The arm is supposed to be in line with the door and not sticking out like a coat rack.
Take the bolt off the top of the arm and put a 1/2" wrench on the bottom of the shaft and put a preload on the arm in the parallel to the door,
Now you can start in the adjustments to get it right.
That literally explained nothing.
This is unwatchable because of the ding
