I work at a paint store, I mix paint for a living.
Preemptive I donât know everything about paint.
When mixing paint you have to pick a base mixture normally thereâs three bases white,deep and neutral.
Clear bases or neutral bases are for really dark colours like a dark blue or black, you have to do many coats to get good coverage. The more pigment you put in a base the more coverage you some times get BUT there is a limit to how much pigment you can put in before you force the base to almost separate or not adhere to what your painting. Love you guys
I also work at a paint store and have a background in training. The bases indicate a difference in the amount of titanium dioxide in the paint which helps with opacity. The reason E&K's paints are so transparent is the colored pigment doesn't "hide" well, you need the white in there.
Titanium white powder is deffinetly used a lot in paint mixes to make it more opaque! (less translucent) using single pigment paints always make it cover less well so to say.
Another important aspect to make the paint cover better in thinner layers is how well grinded the pigments was!
The bigger paint jars like for painting a house often uses less fine ground up (more coarse) pigments as to keep it relativly cheap! while the hobby type of paints, especially miniature paints uses extre fine ground up pigments, and types of pigments that can come in finer particles, miniature paints often can contain 4-6 different pigments aswell to achive the even more opacity in the thinnest of layers.
But thats also why you pay like $5 for a TINY pot in those cases.

I recommend adding a bit of cornstarch to thicken the paint, they look pretty cheap and watery

Highly recommend just buying duo-chrome paint (or spray paint, they're often labeled as color-shift paints) if you're going to be painting something and want that color shift effect. I understand that was completely not the point of this experiment, but y'all seemed so sad about the duo chrome and I wanted to assure you there is hope out there for color-shift paint job projects.

Youâd also want to take into consideration the size of the color molecule, blue is much smaller than red... molecularly speaking. So you would need more red âdropsâ than you would blue or yellow. There is a lot of cool stuff dealing with color molecules. Iâm a hairstylist and this is helpful when dealing with formulations and color longevity. My 11 year old and I LOVE watching you guys!

@@brandynamite3022 Definitely. Phthalocyanine Blue is bigger than Alizarin red but smaller than lead red, while Prussion blue is bigger than both of those. You'd have to know the composition of the pigments and dyes you're using to apply this theory properly. Good thing they have their science robes and vibrator to help with the science.

The mini jars is something you would see on eBay thinking it was normal size and really cheap, so you brought it was surprised at what you got, but you never regretted it because you fell in love with the mini jars.

Hey Evan and Katelyn! Love your channel. Just a quick tip for you from my former life as a researcher. Your vortexer should have a setting for "press to switch on". When you push a sample into the holder and press down, the vortexer turns on and when you release, it switches off. Much easier than using the switch. :)

This video is once again reminding me of how I'd love to one day mix my own paints for art.
By the way!! It is very standard practice to use pigment *powders* when hand-mixing paints because it doesn't effect the consistency of the liquid. Hence why the powder created the most opaque paint mix.
If you want to mix your own paints at home, definitely do some research and make sure you've got the right tools!
I highly recommend starting with arleebean's watercolor paint-making videos! They're very informative and easy to understand.
