    Ric has been pushing Jay and putting him over to the public for years now. Ric genuinely loves the dude and knew he was going to do a great job. You can tell he was helping him out when he said over and over, “let’s see what you got” lol. Leading the segment and keeping that impersonation going just like he would in the back. Reading the crowd and getting a feel for the audience is a lost art, and I do mean art. Pro wrestling, at its best, captivates people of all ages and lifestyles.
    This is because, as Ric mentions, the emotional content is more important than lifeless, fully pre-scripted promos that amount to bullet points.
    Ric Flair, Jim Cornette, and Paul Heyman come at the business from different angles but a common thread they all speak of regarding making good product is to not be overly complicated and emphasize the emotional aspects of any angle or promo.

    • @morrnmanderson7376
      @morrnmanderson7376 Před rokem +6

      Yup thats just it. It isnt so much about WHAT you are saying, its more about the emotion. Trying to remember a script, will leave most of these guys sounding emotionally dead, because they didnt write the script and they are just trying to remember it. And generally, regardless of what or how you are saying it, a wrestling promo more or less boils down to why you are awesome, why your opponent is a douche but still pretty good ( ya gotta build your opponent so when you beat him it seems that much bigger), where and when the ass kicking will be taking place (to promote the event) and a short description of the ass kicking that will be going down. Everything else is just extra to make it interesting lol.
      They've done studies where they showed footage of that 1930's German dictator giving speeches in German. The people in the study couldnt understand German, but it still had a positive effect on them. He would start his speeches in a slow, deep, sonorous voice. He would lull people into complacency. Then he would slowly turn up the heat until finally he would reach a crescendo where he would be dripping sweat as he screamed while wildly gesticulating with his arms and hands. Not a very god guy, but a BRILLIANT public speaker.

    • @ambrosewetherbee8301
      @ambrosewetherbee8301 Před rokem +1

      @@morrnmanderson7376 Exactly!
      I think that the success of pro-wrestling led to a major area of weakness, which is the use of writers to create heavily curated storylines and promos. The inherited knowledge and developed skills of the best minds in pro-wrestling, like Paul Heyman, comes from several generations of professionals who had to live or die by the effectiveness of their product in the territories. They weren't thinking about impressing the crowds with layered storylines. They were thinking of one question: "How can I draw tonight?". Because if they couldn't draw, they couldn't put food on the table, they couldn't keep the lights on or the water running, they couldn't keep their home.
      This kind of do-or-die survival mode that the past generations of the industry existed within allowed them to cut through the superfluous concerns that distract the writers of promotions like WWE. The promoters and workers of yesteryear didn't have the luxury of aspiring to be a "writer", they had one simple but difficult job: Convince communities to come out to their shows and pay for tickets and sit their butts down in seats. In order to do that in each city or town, big or small, rich or poor, of any cultural background, these past generation pros had to speak to the people in such a way that anyone and everyone could get on board with the narrative that the guys were putting out to the crowd. Authentic emotional content was the key. And authentic doesn't mean facts or "truth", but rather, authenticity are the "universal truths" that all of humanity can relate with. Things that make every human laugh or cry, love or hate, admire or denounce.
      So the fact that so many of the best and top draws of the industry come to the same conclusion, that of connecting with the audience and making a compelling product with authentic emotional content, is no coincidence. They all have a hunger, sometimes literal hunger before they make it big, that gives them a clarity of understanding what draws, what sells tickets. It was about surviving and hopefully at some point, thriving.
      These days, few are hungry. It's often either a writer who wants to get recognized by upper management for a storyline they fed a worker or a worker who wants to get the most likes on social media, which is why the product is so diluted. No one wants to make authentic emotional content, they just want to impress and have their ego stroked.

    All the Genetic Freaks know that that promo only has a 33 and a 1/3% chance of being the most famous TnA promo of all time, then you add Kurt Angle to the mix and your chances drastic go down...

    Ric’s right… I don’t know why WWE hasn’t brought him in. Maybe since Vince is gone, they won’t be exactly concentrating completely on looks. The guy can entertain as well. Baffling…

    Rick, fella. He doesn't need the WWE. Not every wrestler has to be WWE. Plus they would only have him doing stupid shit, making a fool of him self after 6 months.

    It's too bad Desmond Wolfe poured cold water on an otherwise amazing segment with the low key racism from out of nowhere. I can't think of that segment without thinking about "ghetto booty" and it's curious how everyone pretends that awkward moment didn't happen.
    But I guess that's wrestling where something brilliant always has to be balanced out by something stupid.
