Apologies that this is not a 100% step by step tutorial. I do not have a big sheet of egg crate in order to do that but if you have any questions please feel free to message me and ask away!
When to Lowes right after watching this video brought the egg crate build one. Left the room came back and my Turtle was already basking on the dock. Just perfect!!! Thank You.
My turtle loves this, so much. I made it for a three pound 7inch turtle that is a beyond stubborn bask-er. She only ever had a plateform, but she needed a topper. She LOVES deep water because she spends most of her time diving (no joke... she jumps off her basking area and does not use the ramp to dive. The bigger the splash, the more noise she makes to get my attention to praise her lol). Anyway! I made this, and she did not use it. I then added some carpet to it, and now it is her favorite thing ever. Every single time I look in the tank, she is on her basking topper. She will stick her nose against it to get treats, and will even shove the top up (I made a lid) to get attention. I put a plant on it on the outside too to help give her some privacy. I have bought every single topper out there, and made some crazy ones. However, this is the only one she ever used. It is awesome, and a great idea. I cannot believe how sturdy it is, and that I can put my lights right on top! It took me only 3hr to completely made it, measure, and design it.
Thank you so much for posting this video! I went to Lowes today and bought some egg crate. My hubby built it for me. My turtle has been on and off it continuously. She clearly loves it! What a great idea!
i made this a week or so ago and i love it!!! took me about an hour or so to make it and its perfect!! So much cheaper than the premade ones. and i think this looks a lot better. thinking of adding some plants in the platform for my turtles to munch on above water. or shade if they dont want to be in the water. so many options!! thanks so much for sharing!!
Amazing idea. I was wondering for so long to find solution for my turtle. I have small tank but turtle is growing pretty fast. For now i want to keep him this small one. Now im gonna make this for him. I am absolutely happy. Thank you again.
thank you for this video, i bought the eggcrate on amazon cuz lowes didn't have it for some reason. and the ones i got were cut already so i was having a hard time figuring out how to make the basking area, but your video helped me a lot to get an idea
they are climbers! i have two red ear sliders and i had a basking area in the corner and i caught them trying to climb out of the tank! definitely going to try this.
Thanks for this. I used it for my 75 gallon bow front tank. All other store bought basking areas won't fit it unless they are floating and my guy is too big for those.
Very nice and simple, cant believe I never thought of that. But I also just find out there were something call "Penn-Plax Turtle Topper Above Tank Basking Platform," gonna try it first, if it fail and your video is very helpful
I just ordered one, should get it tomorrow. How did yours work out, was thinking of making one instead. Was a lil pricey 34$, if they don't use it what's the point.
I'm doing one for a 40 gal breeder. It's wider so how many sheets did you use. I bought two just in case. I'm planning on doing it half the tank maybe less. But I wanna do a little hanging platform underneath. I got that Penn plax basking dock they sell online and they love the platform on the bottom to sleep on at night. Problem is the basking house is to small for the tank and they are to big to be on the platform together so they squeeze in on it. So would one sheet be good
How sturdy is the egg crate? We have a cooter who's pretty big (she's 25 years old). Roughly 6-7 inches long.. Also, we have a flat top tank with no lip. Is there a good way to keep the dock from sliding?
Wow how many tanks do u have? Looked like 4.. Must've been a ton load of money, and do you have to clean out the tanks or does the filter completely take care of that?
Thanks for the video! I thought that turtles would eat the fish 😮 We have Red ear sliders. Would it be wise to put some fish inside their tank? Thanks again
@@xsarabearx1 Hi, I have some questions about maintaining the cleanliness of an aquatic turtle tank, and yours looks super clean. Could you private message me and discuss please? I have a red eared slider, about 7 years old, and even with an over powered filter, its tank gets dirty within 3 weeks. I'm curious to know what you do, and be able to have those little fishies too. Thank you very much!
I have a black and decker tool kit and I used to cutting pliers. It was super easy. I just snipped down the row I needed and it was a clean cut. I trimmed and filled the edges because they can bevome sharp.
just curious, would you be interested in taking in 3 red eared sliders?? Im going away to college and Ive been looking for a good home to send them to that will take good care of them. They would come with everything, two tanks (40 g breeder, 75 g), lights and two canister filters
Great video, nice tank. Where did you find so cheap egg crate because at my local home depot it's only sold in $80 5 packs and I only need for one tank.
Tru Alpha808 You could try and do an online order at homedepot website and do an in store pick up. Or double check with home depot to see if you can open the box and just buy one. At home depot a lot of items can be bought in packs or split up just to get the one. Like deck spindles, hanging ceiling tiles, floor tiles, some light bulbs, etc. Just ask.
How do you keep the tank so clean? Lol, mine clouds up way to quick. I took out the rocks on the bottom. I have a large filter always running. And don't really clean out the food cause they just eat that stuff up faster than I can feed them. Any advice
What filter are you using? A large canister filter or one of those 'large' internal filters? Ull most likely need a decently sized canister or sump if you want non cloudy water. Feeding them in a seperate tank also keeps the tank water way cleaner. Turtles eating in the tank clouds up the water even more so than their waste.
I have a red eared slider that has been eating most of my fish. I have now resorted to buying the cheap feeder goldfish to add life to my tank. Any thoughts on what fish do well with aquatic turtles?
Goldfish aren't really all that healthy. I'm sure you can get away with it every once in a while, but never give them too much. Feeder guppies are better. :D
Michael Riley Yeah, my RES is 23 yrs old and around 6-7 inches and I use this same method. I have a 100 gallon tank so I used half of the top as the basking area. If your turtle is super strong and aggressive like mine then you will prob have to replace it once a year because they will beat it up and loosen the zip ties.
Keeping fish with turtles is always a bit risky; of course it depends what type of fish you house with them. I think cichlids are probably the best to keep with turtles since they're very alert, fast and aggressive. I have 3 so far and my turtle surprisingly has gotten used to them. My blue african cichlid is able to get right in her face, and she just looks at him. But that doesn't mean a turtle won't still attempt to eat a cichlid. So it could potentially happen. But overall I've had a good experience with them; the only fish I wouldn't recommend are slow, lethargic fish like Plecos. In my experience, I had one completely eaten.
my sliders , did not eat as they were street bought babies and would not eat untill i found some live brind shrimp then i switched to green petshop pellets and they were hungry all the time and grew maybealmost eight inches in a little more than 1 or 1.5 years. make your own food add cruched calcium rind up in a majick bullit green and any meat like beef or chicken and dont feen in tank feed in little 1' bt 8' to about 5in high wait an hour and hope they did their business and use that water for plants, petco has 3.5 in african side necks and love to bask all day . they are mellow and are not begging for food all the time like sliders, and they can grow depending on feeding 9 in in a 30 gal and in the wild they are big oh no not hybrid. shouldnt change Malawi or Tanganyika lake ciclids keep them pure. read on how the variations and the how fast they they evolved from tamganica spilling into the newer lake malawi , its great dicovery channel. peice. and you will know all is of evolution and at times it is slow taking millions of years and some like the malawi ciclids was very fast

Do you need to cover the ramp with any type of terrarium cover? Do they try to eat the plastic? Can you buy screen just for the top

What are any types of fish that can be added to a red ear slider tank?
Edible ones..jk😂😂😂😂😂😂has to be fast.
Hi what if you don't have a lip on your tank , mine is just glass
cradleygirl you can make the eggcrate a little bigger and make your own lip with smaller parts of the eggcrate
Can you post your filtration system for the 55-gal.? Also, what substrate and plants are thos?
Marc Mann they are marineland canister filters. The substrate is play sand and all the plants are fake. Only real decoration in it is the driftwood

I went to my home depot in hawaii and they don't carry any egg crate );
