DIY Turtle BASKING AREA made w/Egg Crate! $30 to build w/a modern twist!
I’ve seen so many examples of the egg crate basking area. So I wanted to add my own twist to it. This egg crate turtle basking area cost around $30 to build, that’s including the plants. I’ll supply a general list of the items with the pricing, just in case you would like to try for yourself. The glass used was part of a lid I decided to repurpose. I would strongly recommend pieces of acrylic or glass for the viewing panels. You can also buy that for cheap from Home Depot or Lowes.
Egg crate - $17
Zip ties - $6
Plants - $7

To shave a couple more dollars off, you could go to my favorite store, the dollar store! Haha. That's where I got my zip ties.
Bro!! I didn’t even know they sold zip ties! I will 100% buy all my zip ties from there from now on! I hate buying them from Home Depot or Lowe’s $$$$
i agree with the wife. i have 2 red eared sliders who are now adults and i was trying to make a bigger platform, so your video definitely helped a bit
You look like a pro to me, lol
Great diy video!! I believe I can make a basking area like this for my turtle
Thank you!
I would love to see this with a nesting area 😃
Gotcha! 💯 I’ll make one next week.
As always GREAT JOB BABE! You built a a whole pent house for the turtles 🐢💚
Thank you babe!! ❤️❤️ Just a demo of some possibilities!
I really live that you made this video with a generic/slightly overdone concept, very individualized and unique.
Thanks. Just wanted to provide people with another option if they are choosing to use egg crate to make their basking platform.
Yes please do make the eggs baskets
I'm loving this page
I'm definitely going to make mine like this one
Thanks very much
Thank you! I really appreciate your support and feedback!

I've seen multiple videos on egg crate as a basking dock for turtles but I've never seen it done like this!!! Very nice idea Super creative🙂
Thank you!! I appreciate that! That’s all I was trying to do, provide an alternative! Thank you for your comment! 💯🍻
Thanks for the inspiration! I was building my own basking area, and your window idea is so awesome!
I’m glad this video helped you, thank you for your feedback.
This was really cool! I’ve been stressing an above tank for my turtle and wasn’t sure how to execute in a manner that I liked. But this was a really great and innovative idea! Thank you.
Thank you!!! I’m glad this video helped!! Please share your results if you build one!
Really like your idea with the windows, first time I had seen that and I think you did a great job. Thanks for sharing your ideas!

thanks for posting i had 5 teripins dumpd on me i folows your vido to make my basking spot,
You’re welcome and terrapins are some beautiful turtles.
great
Thank you!! 🍻
Idk if anyone has said this but it might look a lot cleaner if, on the baskets anyway,if you put the "knots" on the inside so you don't see them as much.. I've never done this but it seems logical that would be. Also, hey thank you
Just an example for others. I didn’t use this myself. I used a 20g long aquarium for the basking area at the time. Anyone that decided to make one of these egg crate basking platforms could modify it any way they’d like.
Built 2 for $30
Don’t get any carpet or tile for the actual dock
Go to Home Depot and get as many free samples of vinyl flooring as you need (no limit per customer)
If they do say anything just say you’re a contractor (they don’t care though, it’s free!)
🧠💡Smart thinking.
This video was great! Thanks for this! I bought the Thrive Basking Loft at Petsmart for $90 plus tax and I'm highly considering returning it and building one of these for a 1/3 the price!
Thank you for your feedback! I appreciate it tremendously!
This is such a great design! I'll definitely be using this method when I make a raised platform for my Cumberland slider. She is getting far too heavy for traditional platforms, and I wasn't satisfied with the dimensions of what I could find for sale online. Custom designs are not only expensive, but still inadequate, as they would involve some additional work to improve the design enough to house substrate or to enable my baby to easily crawl up the ramp. New sub!
Thank you so much for your feedback and support! I’m glad this video and design is able to help you. That’s what it’s all about. Thank you for subscribing! 🙌🏾
@@TheFishCorner my pleasure! 😊
that egg crate sheeting is an absolute nightmare to buy in the Uk ! really peeved me off....the closet i could find was aquarium fish tank dividers which are similar but 15 by 30 cm and not that cheap.....they did the job tho creating a platform to sit in my glass tank topper (covered with artificial grass).
Their like legos for aquarists
Indeed. I totally agree with that. I figured that made more sense than “clay” 😂
But you can’t break the Legos apart to make any shape. Lol only put them together in a way to make almost any shape.
Nonetheless, legos does sound better. Lol
Please add the nesting box
LOVE this video, but I have questions. You really didn't go into detail about how you attached the glass viewing area. I am thinking about making this basking area with the base being egg crate, but I would love it if most/all of the sides were made with pieces of acrylic so I could get a full view of my turtle and not just a little peek. Is there a way I can do that instead of having just a little viewing area? If so how?. Thanks.
Nice Job I will build one for my turtles I was just wondering what it looks like if you paint it black and put a top on it also up the ramp side panels but great job
Thank you! And that would be some great ways to modify the build! You should definitely give that a try!
Thank you for this video! Would a similar method work for a basking area inside the tank? Or would the egg crate float in the water?
Hi, good question. I wouldn’t recommend that setup for inside a tank. I would just buy a basking dock from Petco or Petsmart. They suction cup to the side of the tank. It’s just much easier to go that route.
When I did this I used the green little padding for the bottom however because I did that the basking light wasn’t reaching the bottom of the tank which made it dark , any suggestions on lighting for the tank itself
?
I have the same issue with my basking tanks. The only suggestion I have is to either put a light on top of the basking tank so the light can shine through the opening or next to it if there’s room. I hope that helps you, good luck. 🍀
Have they gone on top. My wont try it
They utilize my glass above the tank basking areas. I don’t use the egg crate basking area for my turtles. I don’t like the look of them. I just wanted to put my spin on the egg crate basking area so people will have some options. Maybe your turtles feel exposed up there, I know mine did. It took a while for my African side neck to finally use the basking tank. But now she’s up there every day. I would say just keep the light on regardless, make sure there’s no other areas for them to climb out the water and make sure your water isn’t too warm, because if it is they might not feel the need to bask since they’re already warm. I hope that help brother, good luck. 💪🏾💪🏾
But won’t their claws get stuck ?
No, they don’t.
This looks great! Question, where did you buy the egg crate? I'm only seeing them for $65 and up!! I can't seem to find any for cheap!!
How do u one with a glass aquarium
I made a tutorial video on how to make one with a glass aquarium, you should check it out. But the short answer is, take out the bottom of the tank. Flip it upside down, build a basking platform and make a ramp. Make sure you have your lights. That’s the gist of it.
Hi! Where did you buy the egg crates and what were their dimensions? I have a 75-gallon tank and I want to make the basking dock 24x18:)
where did you buy the egg crate
You can find it at Lowe’s or Home Depot. I bought mines at Lowe’s.
Where did you buy the egg crates? Is there any website I can buy it from? And what is the thickness of the egg crates? .375 inches?
I bought it from Lowe’s. Home Depot will have it as well. I wouldn’t order it. I’d just head over to Lowe’s or HD and buy it. It’s called lighting diffuser. You’ll find it in the lighting section.
Does the egg crait sag any? I ordered something from am. that says is for fish tanks, but it sags too much
I never used it, just made it as a reference. I was using my 10g and 20g aquariums for the basking tank. Works the best in my opinion.
Were to get the tees ?
I’m going to set that up soon! Thank you for inquiring bro! 💯
Can you provide a link to the video on your glass tank basking area?
Sure can. Here you go.

This will work with any size tank. I strongly recommend using a 20 gallon long instead of a 10 gallon. It allows you to do some cool modifications. I built waterfalls in mines.

Is there any other being distracted by this mans arms. I’ll come back later. Byeee
thirsty 🤣😂🤣😂
how is the material called
Lighting diffuser.
What's the name of the plastic your using
It’s called lighting diffuser, some people call it egg crate. You can find it at Lowe’s in the lighting section.
You’re the best where do you buy your turtles?
Thank you! And I bought them from my LFS.
@@TheFishCorner where do you find the egg crates sir?
Sorry for the delayed response. I bought it at Lowe’s.
Could you make me one for a 40 gallon tank if so please let me know thanks
Been 2 days since i set up my turtles and he still hasnt climbed up on it. Should i be concerned
It took my turtles a while to get accustomed to their basking platforms I made but eventually they went up. Sometimes it takes weeks. Just make sure there’s no other areas that will allow them to climb out the water. And keep the lights on during the day whether you see them using it or not. They may start off using it solely when you’re not there to witness it.
@@TheFishCorner woke up yesterday morning to him basking! Hes super happy with his basking area and all the room he has to swim. I ended up putting green eco carpet in there for him.
Watch out for leaching. The egg crate may not be suitable for the water, especially when having fish in the tank as well. Water becomes toxic over time. i would ask an aquarium expert prior to doing any DIY project.....Nice idea though!
It works perfectly fine. Thanks.
Hi Brother! Great Video! If you might think, you are not creative? You would be very wrong! You gave me some great ideas on building my basking area, for my Yellow Belly Slider! Thank You!!! 🙂
Thank you for your feedback brother! I really appreciate it!
Hi Cleveland. If you use a lot of tight zip ties, can you attach two pieces of the egg crate together to where the one won't bend? I'm asking because i'm actually using it in a light fixture and the biggest piece of egg crate they sell at lowes isn't quite big enough, so i want to try to combine two of them.
You sure can. And I use a TON of zip ties!
@@TheFishCorner Thank you for your help!
