Bele dance

Bele - A traditional folk dance in the caribbean that was influenced by our French colonial settlers. Fused with both rugged African movement and the graceful mannerisms of the French the dance is an interpretation by our ancestors of the French’s behavior at their balls and other social gatherings .

Thank you for posting this beautiful video! One point of contention: The African movements are described as "rugged" while the French are described "graceful," which unfortunately reinforces colonial/racist values. It would be great if this description could be edited to reflect the movements more accurately; after all, these African movements can also be seen as "graceful" depending on the viewer, and I'd say that they are not rugged at all. A word like "staccato" instead of "rugged" seems less charged, and of course there are other words that can work as well. I know it may seem like a minor point to some, but these words are so significant, especially when we are representing our culture. Thanks again for the gorgeous choreography and video!
