African Dance Improv
Using my knowledge of West African Dance to simply create and move through space. Fused with some contemporary styled movement the aim was to allow the body to move through space without purposefully thinking or choreographing. I view it as celebratory as the movements give life to the performer and compliments the music.

When the individual passes (limbo) beneath the bar is signifies the crossing of the dead from this life into the after life. In African Cultural practices and Spiritual beliefs, the midnight hour is understood as the hour where spirits begin to roam the earth. This piece is symbolic to the preparation of the chosen one to carry the message of the ancestors to the Salaka/Saraca Feast. This piece speaks to understanding you. Being able to identify your purpose, understanding yourself and your mission. Using flow as the main method the piece is more or less the use of the body in space to formulate movement. So gorgeous!! Lovely dancing, and so joyfully performed. I love the inclusion of the children; so important to pass down our beautiful traditions.

Thank you for posting this beautiful video! One point of contention: The African movements are described as "rugged" while the French are described "graceful," which unfortunately reinforces colonial/racist values. It would be great if this description could be edited to reflect the movements more accurately; after all, these African movements can also be seen as "graceful" depending on the viewer, and I'd say that they are not rugged at all. A word like "staccato" instead of "rugged" seems less charged, and of course there are other words that can work as well. I know it may seem like a minor point to some, but these words are so significant, especially when we are representing our culture. Thanks again for the gorgeous choreography and video!
