(All other 25 screens were playing Monday Night Football). I was the only guy in a side room watching the game. 2 minutes before the start a guy walks in wearing a Timbers jersey. We sat together and bought each other’s beers as we watched it unfold. Every second of the match we were on alternating on different sides of glee and despair. Then extra time, then the 1st 5 of the shootout, then the next 5...

The next year we were in the championship and again it went to PKs (different venue). I lost track in mind how many kicks had been taken. I remember diving the wrong way and the kicker went just wide and grazed the post. While I was diving the wrong way looking over at the ball, time slowed down. I can still picture it. I wiped the sweat off my brow, Whew! I hadn't realized we just won the game until I got up and my team ran on the field and carried me off on their shoulders. Greatest feeling ever in sports.

    It’s those moments that makes me excited for MLS Playoffs every year. It’s a feeling that you don’t get in league European soccer. In European soccer it’s always the same teams winning, and you have to be a rich team to win a championship. Whereas in MLS you can root for ANY team and still be optimistic that your team can win MLS Cup. That’s the beauty of MLS!

      The MLS, like all American sport leagues, has a profit sharing agreement so that the poorest team in the league receives money from the wealthiest teams. And like most American sports leagues, it has salary caps to try to keep a team from spending itself into debt to try to win. It has to do this, because in the USA we are not a single sport country, and so your sports entertainment product has to be competitive with and as entertaining as the show provided by leagues like MLB, the NFL, the NBA, and the NFL - the highest attended, wealthiest, most competitive leagues in the world.
      European soccer leagues are dominated by single large valuable teams in major metropolitan areas who use their leverage as a successful team to buy success year after year after year, with single teams winning more than half of the championships and 2-3 other teams dividing the rest between them. The real dirty secret of most European leagues is that though the one or two wealthy teams in that league currently have teams that are much stronger than MLS teams, those teams survive and earn revenue mostly from beating up teams that are not nearly as well funded and barely if better than MLS teams. It's seal clubbing most of the time for the big cities, taking money from the little guys - and often buying off their players if they become a threat. It's not unusual in a European soccer league for a game to be played where the big "Capital City FC" club has defeated "Smallville United" 50 times in a row, with the last upset occurring far enough back in time that the clubs really were just glorified amateur athletic clubs and not international brands. Even in the EPL, supposedly the most competitive league in Europe, it's not unusual to see 7-1 or 6-0 score lines because the some dumb club spent itself into debt to get promoted up to the Premiere, only to be viewed as nothing more than a scrimmage by a team that has bottomless pockets and put together a roster of the world's best.
      That's not great soccer. That's just moneyball.

    • @cpz6480
      @cpz6480 Před 5 lety +4

      Matthew Reynolds Spot on dude. Spot on. Another thing, from an American perspective, why support an European team that one does not have a connection to, or never been to? They’ll will just be watching from the TV, and dreaming they are in the stadium. Whereas in the MLS you can support your local professional soccer team with a passion and have pride for your city and for your team. Or you can just be like herd of sheep and be “Hala Madrid” or “Força Barça” and not be able to point where they are at in a map.
