Still waiting on a react for World of Warcraft: The War Within cinematic.
Godzilla x kong the new empire is coming. 🦎🦋🦍vs🦧🥶
Gareth Edwards blessed modern Star Wars with Rogue One
Kinda boring imo.
It's not a good movie though.
Yeah, Rogue1 was really solid. It was the last SW film I enjoyed, since it wasn't filled with woke propaganda.
My favorite SW movie of all time.
Jesus Christ the haters just show up out of nowhere
The Behind-the-Scenes featurette for most movies is, "On this day we had this really coincidental thing happen that we took advantage of in this scene." A Gareth Edwards movie is, "This whole movie is coincidental."
Solid take
facts! Super inspiring
+ his bathroom/bedroom
12:02 one of the longest recordings but one of the shortest youtube cuts in the entire series ._.
EDIT: It's been brought to my attention that this is likely the second half of the first React ft. Gareth Edwards.
Yeah that felt like a kick in the head
Most eps are closer to 20 and this was less than 12 when you factor in the sponsorship segment.
They reeeeeeeally want you to buy that website subscription lol. Views have been dropping off steadily for this series since the pandemic ended so they need that cheddah cheese I guess
@@muffinman3052 Problem is, I'VE TRIED! The website doesn't accept my credit card for some reason. I don't know if it's because I don't live in America or something, but I've always been frustrated with the fact that they hide the full episodes behind a paywall that doesn't even let me through when I try to pay.
I think they split the episode in 2. The one from a few weeks ago was almost 20 minutes and this one is a little over 12.
I love how Gareth casually says something and you can see in Wrens eyes, how his mind gets blown by the second, every time it realizes how those infos enrich his previous skillset. :D
It's called acting.
@@user666mega it's not acting it's called being genuinely invested in something
@@zikry4787 Maybe you are both right. I mean he obviously cares about this, yet he's in front of a camera and we don't know how many takes they did of this.
Gareth Edwards is a genius.
My respect for him increased 1000%
And be on a lookout for his interpretation of Jurassic Park 🔥🔥
The fact that he did all the VFX for his first movie Monster alone is mindblowing
nope
@@tiburc10oh shit he’s doing the new jurassic park?
One of the things I loved about the design in Gareth's Godzilla was how cleverly he traded off two things. On one hand, Godzilla needed to be the largest he'd ever been, almost like a mobile mountain and suitably slow, but to balance that this Godzilla had more lateral rotation than he'd ever had. You see that in the shot where he's demonstrating the use of the rooftops to get scale and then panning up; each segment of Godzilla's body is smoothly rotating, almost snake-like. It's a great way to balance the issues introduced by the new scale, but also a way to defeat the character's traditional stiffness due to the old rubber suit.
Imo still the best looking Godzilla. Even better looking than Godzilla minus one.
@@trevorthornley8835Godzila from minus one supposed to be og design. A japanese kaiju. Gareth edward is basically huge lizard
the more i see the actor who performed pre-vfx-Tarkin the more i'm convinced they absolutely should've had him just be the recast Tarkin, like with Mon Mothma.
It's a repeated pattern with Disney. Even with Luke they had such a good doppleganger and they chose the CGI/deepfake route. I wouldn't be surprised if Gareth revealed that he'd prefer a replacement but they told him to go with CGI instead. Smells to me like how a clueless suit would think. "If we can just use the original actor let's just do that!" with zero idea of how hard it is or the moral implications and the like. I wish non-artists were not part of these creative decisions, except for accountants to keep them in check.
@@ishaan863nobody else is gonna bring the essence of Luke the way Mark Hamill does. He was on set for those scenes and was mimicked by the body double. He’s been Luke for over 40 years, it would be EXTREMELY difficult to just accept a new face playing him, especially since he plays both the young AND old versions of Luke in canon. They tried the recast route with Han Solo and we saw how well that turned out… first flop in Star Wars history. The progression of the technology from Mando S2 to Boba was night and day, and it’s only gonna get better
@@ishaan863I wouldn't be surprised if superficially solo a Star Wars story is what kabashed any look-alike actors.
Yh this new trend of digital necromancy is very distasteful and imo disrespectful, as the actor is no longer around to approve of certain choices or guide the performance that his name is being put to. 😕
I hadn't considered the Tarkin lighting issue at all before, but it makes perfect sense with the example yall gave, the lighting really makes an enormous difference.
so true! until this episode, i hadnt figured out "why" it didnt feel like Tarkin...kind of a losing situation when keeping to the tone of Rogue One
It probably also played a role that he looked like a character out of a PS3 cutscene.
PS3 cutscenes didnt look that good thats a PS6 cutscene next to real life.@@poppers7317
His head was way too shiny. Looked plastic in the final cut.
this guy is such an inspiring moviemaker. not only is he creative and telented but also very down to earth. he seems like the kind of guy who would try to help you achieve your vision and not just laugh at it and ignore you.
He feels like that one friend’s dad who you only sometimes see while at your friend’s house but they’re super cool
I don't know about the second part. Seems to me like he would neither laugh at your vision or help you achieve it, he just wouldn't give much of a shit about it. He's more the "maniacally working at achieving his own vision" type of guy.
I love when the guys get professionals on the couch! Its so interesting
They usually do though
Everybody there is a pro. What are you talking about?😂
@@mauchoamusicthink they just mean in terms of guests, its cool when they’re also specifically in VFX
Gareth's description of going from Star Wars to mortgage is so wholesome lol
Over the past 5-6 years this show has become my #1 'Saturday Morning Cartoon'--thanks for making the internet AWESOME!
Please react to the movie "Bedknobs and Broomsticks" (1971). Except for using the magic-prism from Mary Poppins, to integrate real life humans into animated scenes (and dancing weightless under the sea), there are also some decent shots at the last act of the movie, with an army of self moving (empty) knight armors fighting an amazed platoon of WWII German soldiers.
Seconded. I loved that movie when I was a kid.
I just wanted to say that I'm shoced that 89 people liked your suggestion for Bedknobs and Broomsticks it's a great movie!
this!!!
I haven't watched that movie in decades, but I still have a vivid memory of one of the suits of armour pulling off its boot and pouring out all the bullets. What a special film that was.
And Mary Poppins and Bedknobs both have the same director. I wonder if there's more crossover in his other movies?
They got gareth edwards!?
That's a W
That's the second video with him, they also discussed The Creator on another one.
You should watch the previous video with him on, he goes into a lot of detail in how he created The Creator(no pun intended)
Someone missed last week's video...
@@ronch182 my bad😅
Gareth Edwards has a special place in my heart for giving us Rogue One and Legendary's Goodzilla. So glad he's a repeat guest. Also, LOVED the Express VPN ad.
While the Tarkin effect took me out of the movie (sadly), Rogue One remains my favorite SW film since the original trilogy. That and Godzilla are absolute masterpieces. I know some people wanted more Kaiju battles in Godzilla, but for me the movie was one long build up to an incredible final showdown and I loved every second of it.
Yep.
Treating Godzilla like Spielberg treated Jaws was the absolute right call for the first movie.
@@HINESisGOAT Great comparison! Never thought of that!
This is my favorite episode so far. Being a VFX compositor for 30 years now and watching the Mr. Edwards' approach and experience of fx film making is fantastic. I commented on your 119 episode about Ghostship. Was happy to have composed the first shot of your expose' into it. Thank You for the channel. Enjoyed immensely!
Gareth Edwards just seems so modest and laid back.
Godzilla‘s first use of the flame breath is one of the coolest memories I have of cinema. 40 years of being a fan, despite how comical it has always looked and the first time we get it looking incredible is that amazing shot….
Talk about creating goosebumps in the theater, what an understatement.
So you’re telling me that the atomic beam looked “comical” in the Heisei era? No shot 🤣
@CobbleBompster aw dude....it was literally a cartoon drawing on a guy in a rubber suit. Some of the movies had it so faint it looked like fog. Got a little better after 2000 but until Garrett's Godzilla and Shin, it was so busted....
gareth is so chill about the most insane things, i love it
The halo Shot was the sole reason I decided to go airborne in the army this shot in theaters literally inspired my military career in the 173rd airborne
Were you disappointed that you didn’t get to drop in on a giant monster?
Thank you for your service 🫡🇺🇲
@Luke101 lol a little bit
Gareth Edwards is a genius when it comes to vfx, but I wish producers would pair him with a similarly wise screenwriter, because his worlds suffer from the nonsensical stuff the characters do, or that happens. There's gotta be a happy compromise between having the freedom to add boats in trees etc when appropriate, and following a tight narrative frame with the kinks worked out, so it doesn't break our immersion. It's hard to justify a scuba team stealthily emerging from the water when there's a giant fucking blue beam directly behind them, as in The Creator, for just one example. The man is a visual wizard though, with an incredible work ethic and a deep knowledge about how to achieve the desired look, and that deserves massive respect. I hope he (well, they, cos he had a team for The Creator) gets that VFX Oscar, and that Hollywood then pairs him with one of those (increasingly rare) amazing screenwriters.
Yeah it's rather evident. Rogue One was a smash hit because the script was so tight and well written, and I imagine most of it had to do with Tony Gilroy. No offense to Chris Weitz but he just can't carry it. We need master level screenplay to pair with Gareth and it'll end up glorious.
I think a happy medium might be to give him a tight, polished screenplay but give him the freedom to shoot it the way he wants. Clearly he knows his visuals so let him cook in that department
@@zxbc1unfortunately the direction and resulting performances in Rogue One let the whole thing down. Maybe that story would've worked but when you watch it back to back with Andor the difference in quality is pretty jarring. I care about the characters in Andor. I couldn't tell you a thing about anyone in Rogue One. Cassian doesn't even feel like the same guy. I know his character changes but something just doesn't connect
@@KABOBkabob Rogue One didn't have time to develop all characters, but all of them were interesting to me. It feels like any one of them could get a spin off like Andor. I think the direction was okay, and not shading Gareth Edwards but he is first and foremost a visual artist and not (yet) a great film director. That's why I agreed with the OP that he really needed better screen writers to help him.
Well he just got paired with David Koepp who wrote the original Jurassic Park to make the new one
I met Gareth once while working a 3d conversion studio In Vancouver. Think this was right around the release of Godzilla . Really nice guy, but I was totally swamped at the time and didn't really speak to him, but heck I was a lowly dev and he made the time to say Hi. Always appreciated that.
Didn’t realize he did Rogue One. Low key might be my favorite star-wars movie.
How's life under that rock?
@@JeighNeitherRogue One is the only great Star Wars film in almost every facet. It's not a rock, it's reality.
It's the worst one ever made
@@QuestForCinnamonit's an opinion lol
Well it's the only good star wars movie since 1983.
Major props to Christian for that ad, that was AMAZING, one of the best - I watched the whole thing
That was a new level of “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it!” short
That two minute Darth Vader sequence at the end of Rogue One is one of the most badass I've ever seen not just on Star Wars but on any film.
This guy is insane!
That was part of the Tony Gilroy reshoot and not Edwards
@@laartworkIt wasn't a reshoot.
@@laartwork Lol wtf are you on about, that scene literally has Gareth Edwards in it as one of the rebel soldiers.
That might be the best ad integration I've seen on here 😂
This is definitely my favourite ad transition of yours
So glad to see Gareth Edwards hard work and career finally get some of the praise it truly deserves!! Been a fan since the Monsters days. Studios need to keep giving him all the budget and control he wants and don’t interfere with the auteur.
Do you think The Creator is a good movie? VFX was remarkable with that budget but everything else is mediocre at best. He's probably genius VFX supervisor but that doesn't make you an auteur.
@@NzeRekoRec He's certainly a better director/cinematographer than he is a writer, but I never suggested he should write a Star Wars movie.
Gareth Edwards an auteur 😂
Giving someone both complete creative control and complete budget control is a recipe for disaster, but I agree with everything else you said.
I absolutely love the way Gareth Edwards composes a shot. The way he filmed Godzilla was masterful. He gave Godzilla a scale in a way the follow-ups just don't and they don't hit as hard in my opinion. I'm excited to see where he goes next.
*cough* sleeper pick for a Bond movie, maybe?
Woah you got the man himself that started the Monsterverse, cool!
Yep, got handed the keys to the city, then laid a overly dark brick with Godzilla 2014 lol. Damn that movie sucks compared to the latest Monsterverse films.
@@ronniepatterson2827nah, easily one of the best. None of the others gave the monsters that sense of scale that Edwards did
@@YodaOnABenderDont believe me aye? Research how Edwards himself said Adam Wingard "Godzilla vs Kong 2021, GxK2024" made him look bad by comparison, then research how he admitted he wished he had made Godzilla Minus One, instead of that 2014 turd - then get back to me. Im just the messinger going by his own words & realizations lol

Get Bill Pope on the couch to discuss the miniatures, SFX and puppetry of Team America!
You could then talk about The Matrix, Spiderman, Jungle Book and other movies he's worked on.... 😁
Hearing a discussion about VFX from a cinematographer perspective would be nice.
Absolutely, I vote for Bill Pope.
I agree!
I want to hear about Army of Darkness
I highly recommend the Team Deakins podcast if you’re interested in legendary cinematographers (being interviewed by Roger Deakins himself!) , Bill Pope might’ve been on it by now…
Back in the days I have watched like a 8 hours advanced compositiing tutorial of Attila the Hun. I have learned so much from it. I had no idea it was Gareth Edwards.
Thank you so much!
Godzilla 2014 still is the best one. The scale and wonder that was achieved was amazing. The airport shot is still great. When Godzilla stomps, its so cool.
To hear Wren use the term "non-trivial" made my day. I'm sure Adam Savage would be proud!
I'm so glad that this is the man helming the next Jurassic movie.
Same. It gonna be the best modern jurassic movie.
Wait he made Godzilla and Rogue One? That explains so much. Dude is a legend.
All these movies are full of CGI that are so clearly CGI that nothing seems of any consequence, no suspension of disbelief. These movies are nothing. There's not a second where I can immerse myself in the movie.
@@snoopymccloud1875 why comment this? No seriously why did you feel the need to reply to my comment with this? Think about your actions and introspect on how you can find happiness in your life.
I love the fact that he's such a creative nerd. Gets the job done very creatively
Amazing guest. Really helps understand why the scale and the effects are so good in his films
Gareth has inspired me for years, still blows my mind what he did on the Genghis BBC show. Monsters is one of my favourite movies too, so understated yet epic at the same time, exploring character depth like no one dares to in Hollywood.
Thanks for this interview, it's got all my creative juices flowing again.
I'm happy he's directing the next Jurassic movie. The franchise really needed his loving touch with VFX
I think the cgi in the newest movies are amazing. What they really need is a good story with characters who are more than just “famous actor in a leather jacket”
@@YodaOnABenderit’s amazing but it needs a grounded feeling to it. The recent ones really feels digital
What the Jurassic franchise REALLY needs is to die. It should have at least 2 movies ago.
@@chrism1503i Just want jurassic Park to follow the books. Its supposed to be survival horror, not survival action.... Imagine a Rated R jurassic Park movie where character is useless and need to hide.
I think that the amazon prime show 'tales from the loop', based on the artwork of Simon Stålenhag, deserves a look. Full of great VFX and CG stuff that look fully part of the shots they're in.
This dude is so amazing and chill, after watching Godzilla 2014 and Rogue One he became one of my favorite directors. You're awesome Gareth, for every movie you put out I can't wait till the next one!
Such a great conversation. Much more respect for Edwards than I already had.
As far as great director/composer partnerships go, I was pleasantly surprised by Gareth Edwards and Michael Giacchino for Rogue One
The most talented and creative people are often the most honest and humble. Gareth is a massive inspiration.
What a guest! So glad there was a part 2 of this because he was super interesting in the last video.
I like how Gareth talks about CGI with the giants like ILM being magic. Like it captured part of the magic he remembered at the soul of these films in the creative process.
I shoot a lot of 35mm and it’s one of the reasons I still prefer using a lab over developing myself, keeps some magic in the creative process
he said is it the longest episode they filmed while the YT vids gettung shorter and shorter... i get it you need to push the patreon for more income.. but a 12 minute video with 2 mins ad+intro.. its now like a ad for your patreon with an other ad in it.. -.-
You got a good point
this channel is going downhill, it used to be great.
This also includes the 20min YT version of talking about The Creator a couple weeks ago. This is from the same film session.
The full version on their site isn't even that long either,it's like 20-somethijng minutes while the longer ones they have on there are 40-50 minutes-ish.
This is the second part of a multipart series with this director. They broke it up into parts for youtube and the longer version is on their website.
I love how the sponser segments are entertaining and make me want to watch them.
This is the only channel I will watch them lol, even the ones at the end of the video
All credit to Edwards for the end battle in Rogue One and especially for giving the AT-AT's an imposing sense of scale.
Nice one Corridor Crew! Gareth Edwards has truly mastered the art of visual effects (in his bedroom), using it as a tool to tell compelling stories rather than letting it overshadow the narrative. His ability to find creative workarounds and prioritize the story is both inspiring and commendable. By focusing on the heart of the story, Edwards has shown us that VFX is not just about spectacle, but rather a means to enhance and deepen our emotional connection to the characters and the world they inhabit. Bravo
Damn your ad sections have been hilarious lately I love it
You guys should look at the de-aging in Billy Joels new music video, Turn the lights back on. Best i’ve seen.
the best episode ever yall. he shows creativity on the highest order. We salute you Gareth Edwards.
Dude the space battle cinematography in Rogue One is MAGNIFICENT
Godzilla 2014 was severely underrated
I would love to see you guys react and discuss various driving scenes. I just rewatched Spielberg’s War of the Worlds and never noticed how bad the cg looks outside of the van as Tom Cruise drives away from the initial attack. It reminded me of old rear projection techniques, but with cg. Cars seem to just appear in and out of nowhere.
I always appreciate when filmmakers take extra time tying the actors to the moving backgrounds. I would love to see more examples of good and bad driving scenes.
The old James Bond films have some janky rear projection. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood really sells that Brad Pitt is driving around L.A.
I have just rewatched the War of The World scene because of your comment, I’m sorry but the exterior environment makes sense if you pay attention to it. Surely the lighting would look better if they had the Volume available back then , but in my opinion it holds up really well.

Dudes, could you guys react to the documentary: *”Prehistoric Planet”* ?
And compare the dino(s) from that show to the ones from the Jurassic movies?
This was such a a great episode because everyone on that couch was having fun and legit so focused on the conversation
Gareth Edwards just strikes me as a sheer powerforce of creativity. The simplicity of going to a town and asking the locals, "whatcha got that's weird?" - and using that as a springboard ... This man thinks differently and I admire him.
You guys should react to "Jason and the Argonauts" (1963). It is an excellent example of miniatures, stop motion, classic film effects, and even slow motion, miniature water!

I can't agree more.
Pretty sure they said that because they filmed the last episode along with this one. And that was 20 mins long, so in total its like 30 mins. They just divided it into two episodes. And other than that there's probably a lot of exclusive content as well.@@psyched.shelby5391
