You can't hardy find anybody nowadays doin' the classic Chicago stuff so fresh and cool like these people down in Texas in the 1980's. Lovely, superb Ms Strehli ♥
I was lucky enough to be living in Austin from 73-82 there just wasn't a better place to be music wise. I always had a mad-crush on Angela, this song is one of her best with a great band on this version. Nice job by everyone especialy Angela, and Kim
I loved going to Hut's after work and having a great cheeseburger and a beer then waiting for Angela and Denny Freeman to play , they were great ,RIP Denny Freeman
Look at these youngsters! WC - the Fatha of Austin Blues, The Wonderful Angela Strehli...man has she got a awesome set of pipes! The Great Jimmy Vaughan, Denny Freeman on the Axe, (now Dylan's keyboardist) and the great T-bird regs. I got 3 in the studio and 4 to go - hopefully, someday. We'll see.
The more I hear it the more i ADORE it !!!! it is a historic MASTER PIECE....!!! i know what i am talking about.... ...it will become what it deserves to be A MAJOR LEGEND ...in the blues history
This was recorded in October of 1989 to celebrate W.C. Clark's 50th birthday. Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble opened for W.C. and the W.C. Clark Blues Revue. W.C. had several old bandmates play several songs with him including Denny Freeman, who plays the lead on this song. What a great evening of music THAT must have been.
What a great line up...I think its from 1988. I've had this Austin City Limits gem on vhs for quite a few years, and great to see it up here in such good quality. What blows my mind is the fact that Kim Wilson was just as Great a harp player back then...as he is now. He's always been great. ...as he continues to do his thang & continues to mesmorize. The whole band & Angela sound fantastic... but Kim's solo still gives me goose bumps. Thanks for posting FATharpo!
It was done in November 1989 as a celebration of WC Clark's 50th birthday. IIRC that might have been how Stevie agreed to do his second ACL, if this tribute was part of it. All the musicians on this show admired WC, he mentored all of them and they've played together a lot through the years. So I can believe this story....
Yeah Buddy, tha Man! He was always so cool....so self deprecating off stage, and then he gets up there and does THAT! But only if the song demands it. He could play plenty subtle if need be.
Yes he was a total badass on stage...if the song called for that( and this one does!). But he could turn around and play the sweetest, gentle ballad with just as much skill and soul. Truly a legend, gone too soon! I know he had another 10 years of music in him, at least....
Having played and heard a lot of blues, I really have to say that this may be the toughest double-shuffles on all of CZcams. George Raines and June Core are two drummers off the top of my head who I’ve heard lay down this kind of floating, slightly behind shuffle groove. So fun and easy to play over.
Kim's been voted best harmonica in the world, at least at the present time. One can't forget Sonny Boy Williamson, Jerry Portnoy, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, and others, but Kim kicks ass.
Hi Otis Spain Great name! How about Rod Piazza, James Harman, Little Charlie & the Nightcats, Kid Ramos, Bharath & His Rhythm Four, and in the U.K. West Weston and Honeyboy Hickling? I have played guitar in Hickling's band and believe me, they have that stuff down. I thought I was playing with The T'Birds...Apologies to anyone I've forgotten! Best wishes
@Mojokane4u The song is called Big Time Playboy from Angela's disc "Soul Shake" - 1990. This film is from Austin City Limits on PBS. Don't know if it's on a DVD
If you want to some footage of Angelia "back in the day" check out the excelent DVD "Antone's Home of the Blues" which chronicles Clifford Antone's club in Austin. Lots of great blues players on the DVD.
I think they each had one, with slight differences. And Denny is playing his main stratocaster, which he played every time he was on the ACL stage. That old yeller strat went all over the world with him, on all the tours with Jimmie,Taj and Bob.
Yes, done in November 1989, for W. C. Clark's 50th birthday. The SRV & DT show this was aired with was filmed at the same time. It was going to be aired later in the 1990 season of Austin City Limits, and when Stevie was killed, they aired it that next weekend. I've worn out a few videotapes of this show! So much of the Antone's royalty there....
Denny....DAMN,that man could play, and looked so freaking cool doing it!
Texas blues at it's best.....
RIP Denny, we'll miss you!
I sure do miss Denny Freeman on guitar - one helluva nice man.

It's 1989! I think it was recorded in the same day as Stevie second show at ACL

Definitely make me homesick for Austin

Denny Freeman ROCKS!
RIP Denny.

Angela is THE BEST!
yay Denny!
1:50 That rock solid groove of Jimmie V. Nothing else like it.

That's Frosty Smith on drums filling in for the Fran Christina shuffle king.
Name of this song?
@@edgaralejandro9210 Big Town Playboy. Originally by Eddie Taylor.
Gat damn!, look at that lineup all in their Prime....
love it... damn she's good!
Available on 1987 Angela Strehli cd Soul Shake, track Big Town Playboy.
Dallas..."that's one place I don't enjoy..." got a big round of applause hehe
Kim's been voted best harmonica in the world, at least at the present time. One can't forget Sonny Boy Williamson, Jerry Portnoy, James Cotton, Charlie Musselwhite, and others, but Kim kicks ass.

I think they each had one, with slight differences. And Denny is playing his main stratocaster, which he played every time he was on the ACL stage. That old yeller strat went all over the world with him, on all the tours with Jimmie,Taj and Bob.
tip top
it was before or after SRV's dead??
before
How is that relevant,I´m curious?
This must be about late 80's?
I think this was recorded the same day as Stevie ACL!

I wish I could go back in time and tell Stevie not to get on that blasted chopper.
Why not continue & say the same to Ricky, Otis, Patsy, Buddy & Richie, Lynyrd, J.P., Jim & Ronnie.
@@56doowopdave yes of course....but i sense your a little touchy. You waited 9 years to tell me this!
