We needed to do one final shakedown/test of our Hoonigan-Spec BRZ, but wanted to make a little more interesting than just another new-school JDM showdown. Enter the 1984 Ferrari 308 GTB Quatrovalvole. The specs? Surprisingly similar. The drivers? Both came to win. The results? See for yourself.

If I were that guy, I wouldn't do too many of these... if he breaks something he's going to quickly learn nobody makes many of the parts for cars like the 308 anymore. That and maintenance is no joke on a Ferrari.
@@brianm.595 Trust me.. Donnie is well aware.. he’s a vintage Ferrari and Lambo mechanic and pretty much the go to guy for that stuff if you’re lucky enough to be able to get on the list..

My heart is broken but I would still take that 308 any day of the week. The guages and the wedge are iconic

The BRZ is a front end swap of the GR86, The car Akio Toyoda, the CEO and Grandson of The Founder of the Toyota Motor Company, Kiichiro Toyoda,signed off. Akio Took over the company in the 2000s, when Toyota was in a Rut and know for dinky, soulless cars, and in 2008,09 when he green lit the LFA Project, Hiromu Naruse, Toyota's test driver at the time, Trained Akio as his successor, Even taking Akio to Race at the VLN and 24h Of Nurburgring(Under the alias of Morizo). Naruse-san was Co-Founder of Gazoo Racing. When Naruse-san passed away in a Road accident, Akio took the reigns as Toyota's test driver, so when Toyota Motor Group Bought Subaru, Toyoda-san asked subaru to Make a joint project, and the BRZ was born. Akio gave the final thumbs up before the car was launched. With the new Gen GR86,BRZ,GR yaris, GR Corolla, GR supra and the many Lexus sports cars, Akio Must say that the cars are right and in the case of the BRZ/GR86 and the Supra, give the Motoring enthusiast what they wanted, like the 6 speed Manual GR Supra and the Power, Torque and chassis improvements of the GR86/BRZ.

Pretty impressive how fast that stock Ferrari is considering it's nearly 40 years old. That thing must have been a beast in the 80's. Such a pretty car too. Mad respect to the guy for driving it to it's limits and even letting the guys try it out.

I saw the 1-2 misshift coming from the moment the 308 was introduced 😂😂. The gated shifter looks cool and it's fun to have the "clack clack" when changing gear, but it is not conducive to quick shifting and those older Ferrari gearboxes do _not_ like to be rushed 😅 (Also, as the bushings and such in the linkage wear over time, the alignment of the "gates" can shift every so slightly. In a car with a cloth/leather boot over the shifter, it'd be so small you'd likely not notice that much, but in a metal gated shifter it can actually *prevent you from selecting a gear* since moving 1mm or 2 mm laterally will make the gear stick interfere with the "fingers" of the metal gate, and you have to remove the gate to select that particular gear until you can put in new bushes or make a linkage adjustment 😆).
Anyway, I think this race came down to the Subaru's better gear ratios (6-speed vs 5-speed) and modern tires, as well as the BRZ's better user-friendliness vs the Ferrari's finicky-ness (harder to launch and doesn't like being shifted too quickly).
For sure, gated shifters are cool but they just exist to hide the fact that the gearboxes aren't actually that good!

Props to the Ferrari owner for driving the car and driving the hell out of it too. A Ferrari 308 is valued around 100K. I know that's not much in terms of Ferrari classics but still - its 100K for an old car.
I love this. It’s more relaxed then the normal this vs that and it really shows how stock cars push their limits
Love that 308, wish you guys could snag some old rarri's and do some retrofit boy racer stuff to them, the 308 with all Titanium or Inconel goodies lighter wheels new tires, be a fun 80s pocket rocket.
the 308, and frankly any ferrari of that general time frame, were never absolute speed demons. what they do have though in immense quantities, is an amazing driving experience. the look, the feel, the smells, the sounds, it's a sensory 4 course meal. you don't drive those cars; you become one with the car. it's like the most amazing custom fitted suit you'll ever wear.
@@johnhufnagel oh yeah well aware, also the 80s and 90s they were geared for top speed not acceration. Such a different feel. In my opinion the F355 Spider wraps up that Era best, with the gated shifting 5 valve per cylinder V8. Mmm sounds and drives so well My Evo X beats it as well as most modern cars in a drag race but the 355 still feels pretty great at 170+mph especially with modern tires and brakes.

This video demonstrates that the passage of time is undeniable and normal for a car from 40 years ago to be unable to cope with the modern one no matter how much power and performance it has, but if there is one thing that Ferrari wins, it is undoubtedly in design.

Hey guys I love these videos. this match up was so good with low power and stock ish cars. Id love to see more this vs that like this. Guys on budgets and under 500 hp. everyone just makes such crazy power and has whole teams working on the car it's a little to much for me.
