  • Train Compartment Fire Detection using Smoke Detection Sensors, CFD Analysis using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS)
The objective of this simulation is to assess the Fire Detection system in the Third AC coach of Indian Railways using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools. The primary focus of this report is on analysing fire and smoke spread within the coach. The study aims to determine the ideal placement, quantity, and configuration of Smoke obscuration sensor required for timely detection of fire considering the different fire locations and fire growth rate in accordance with ARGE Guidelines[4]. CFD is progressively becoming more integral in advancing the field of fire safety science, playing a crucial role in enhancing our comprehension of fundamental aspects like flame spread and the production of chemical species when employed in conjunction with physical experiments. Nonetheless, its greatest relevance likely lies as a fire engineering design tool for the majority.
    Conclusion
Fire is detected within 18 seconds which is within stipulated time of 60s. Temperature. The highest temperature recorded near smoke detector up to 18 seconds remains below 40 ᵒC which is within operating conditions of smoke detector. Therefore, the sensor placement meets the design objective specified in section 2.2 of this report.
