Brian! Thank you so much for your kind words! It means a lot to me! Funny thing is that I was the one that I though that you guys were the pros. Lol And you are pros!!! Also, depending of the song, “Less IS MORE”.
As I told you during my call this afternoon to you, I feel blessed and grateful for the opportunity and privilege that I had to worship with you! Thank you so much to Pastor Brian Fuller for trusting in me and giving me the opportunity to be part of the worship team as well Bradford Mitchell, Marecelo, Dave Bookhout, Justan and the others. I can’t wait to worship with you guys again with Jimmy Rodz., Josh Vega, Angelo, Buster, and the others!
CONTINUE DOING THE GREAT WORK THAT YOU ALL ARE DOING TO HELP AND IMPROVE THE CZcams WORSHIP AND MUSICIANS COMMUNITY!
Once again, THANK YOU SO MUCH FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART! Remember, all you always in my prayers!!!! LOVE YOU ALL!!!

I was thrown onto our church praise team after only owning my bass for 2 weeks. 😂 our leader talked me into coming and I’m so glad she did. They taught me so much very quickly. And they were all so patient with me as I got better every week.

Awesome bro! Keep growing! I've been on my church's worship team a little over a year and when I got started I only played acoustic until we got a new worship pastor. The last few months I've been on electric and it's amazing how much more fun it is playing guitar with a team of such gifted people. I'm thinking if learning bass at some point as well. Personally I like versatility. Keep jamming keep growing and I hope you get the best experience out of this man. I've enjoyed my time on the team and I hope you continue to as well. God bless you brother! Have a great weekend

Anytime I played with a another guitarist that was head and shoulders better than me they always complimented me. My preparation, my skill level, and/ or my tone. Thus went a long way in making me more comfortable sharing the stage with them. It also made me pay way more attention to anything that had to teach me.

Thank you. This was an important Message, and i am in that exact Situation right now. I play e-guitar for maybe 3 years now, and since then i made very much of tiny, small steps forward in my playing every week. First i quitted playing on PC and now i have my guitar at my Desk in our living room. No mans cave or something, i just play and practice in the middle of my loving and very supporting family. They get up at 0700 every sunday morning without any questions or complaints. I LOVE MY WIFE AND DAUGHTER (12) FOR THIS!!! I try to get every song in my church under my Fingers and you guys and Bro's became an important Part of my journey... Be blessed beyond all understanding! THANK YOU!

Playing with “better” musicians is the best thing you can do for yourself to improve. I agree that, especially in a worship music environment, those more experienced musicians are going to be extremely encouraging, which will help you to relax. You will learn from the other musicians. You will learn from making mistakes. And you will be motivated to BE one of those top-shelf musicians.
    Go for it!

I've been playing in worship bands on and off since 1985. I love playing with musicians who are better than me - which is most of them! It's all about learning, practicing and remembering what we are there to do. 'Nerves' usually mean lack of preparation. Be humble, have fun. It's a great priviledge.

Just had this conversation with a new keys player. From the leadership standpoint, I try to be super supportive and encouraging - sending walkthrough videos, rig rundowns, and offering time for her to come in and just get used to everything around them. She's definitely very beginner, but covered everything really well. I was able to support instrumentally with lead lines that would normally be hers, but I jumped in on guitar so she could focus on the foundation. She did great, and I was so happy the process worked. Awesome breakdown, Brian. You're the man, dont let the crazy commenters get to you 😂😂

I just recently got into my praise team as an acoustic guitar player and I was so worried about how it was going to turn out. I didn’t even really know how keys work to he honest. But throughout the weeks, I have learned the four songs I need to know, I practiced, I prepared myself, and this past weekend, we had no drummer so I was the rhythm and boy was I nervous but it all worked out in the end thanks to God. I love you guys covers and tutorials. Keep on making them, and God bless you all.

Brian, I was in the same situation. I was gracefully encouraged to play electric guitar in our churches praise and worship team. My music minister at that time is one of the most talented multi-instrumentalist I have known. Everyone else was top shelf and was shiny new to the whole thing. I had to practide hours on end just to be able to offer something to the overall worship service. It is funny that "you" shared this story because it was "you" and Bradford I watched on CZcams over and over again to learn my parts. I consider myself a fill player rather than a lead. Once I accepted that role the stress decreased and the joy increased.

The leader was very gracious and the team of pros were all very supportive. I have also lead many times and have been serving in a supportive role with our new worship leader. I also want to branch out to either electric or bass or even keys. I have to work on passing on the same encouragement to others.

But they keep asking me to play, so for Him I keep working hard at it and doing my best. Thanks for saying that really good musicians don’t look down on those of us who aren’t on that level. I try to believe that and keep leaning in. Agree 100% that playing with people better than you will make you a much better player.

We’ve got several pro-level players on our team, like actually touring with CCM artists and former Elevation musicians and vocalists. I was really nervous the first time I played with a particular vocalist because I’ve seen her in music videos and stuff. And then she forgot the words to start her song, and they were even on the confidence monitor. Moral of the story, these guys and gals are human and make mistakes too. It has definitely inspired me to put forth my best, not to impress them, but to fulfill my role in the team as best I can and to bring honor to God through my effort.

I interned at a church where the Worship Pastor would intentionally partner a strong musician with a weak one. So strong drummer partnered with weak percussionist, strong lead guitar partnered with weaker rhythm or acoustic, same with keys and pads, and even vocalists. Then he empowered the stronger musicians to teach the weaker ones during rehearsals, and eventually to start passing leads and solos to the weaker musicians. That was a life changing experience for me.

for me, i spent a lot of time at the pub jam nights. you are in the deep end with people playing stuff off the cuff every time. you learn to relax and use your ear. many guys get anxious unless they have everything going smoothly for them, good foldback mix, time to set up and break down gear, etc. i usually get the set list the night before a church service. relax, go over the songs and do the gig relying on your ear and relax. i also play in cover bands, that's different as you get time to learn the songs before playing live.

I was 15 and had just started playing bass guitar 1 month before my pastor asked me to go on with a very experienced piano / keys player, singer, drummer and guitarist. I was terrified. I remember going back to pray with the worship team before service and being like "God please don't let play at my normal level." The rest of the band was totally chill and very nice about showing me the ropes and it all ended up being fine but that was a very stressful year for me as a musician. I used chord sheets to help me compose my bass lines and got to play test them during service. Many mistakes were made but I learned a lot. I actually do miss playing with the team but your videos help me live vicariously.
Anyway thanks for the great video and trip down memory lane!

I'm not from a large church by any means but I'll be playing strictly lead for the first time in Sunday. My friend and worship leader gave great advice of just have fun with it. It doesn't have to be technically proficient or virtuosic but you're there to worship and to facilitate worship, so keeping it simple is ok! This helped me so much in preparation because I was too busy thinking about all the great guitar players I hear and worried about trying to emulate them. My style is my style and that's ok as long as you don't lose sight of the goal of facilitating worship

I've just started playing at church and we are doing a special service combining several of our campuses. I don't know half the musicians but I am starting to wonder if I'm going to be able to do it. This video was a great help and encouragement. I'm always prepared and I'll keep practicing. Let's go!

Thanks Bryan for talking about this topic that Is very important to talk about. Despite there are excelent musicians that also are excelent People, sadly this Is just one side of the coin. There are much, included myself, that has lived bad experiences with talented People that also are prepotent, indifferent or cynical with other musicians. I was a intermediate guitar player in a church band with skilled musicians . The criticized my level of playing and making an ambience full of tension, even with bullying phrases. I had to left that band and eventually left that church. That was a sad episode of my life. A time Later I found a church and a band whith a ambience of fraternity and respect where I could grow as a musician. I hope this counts. Forgive my bad english. Greetings.

What helped me was to practice to a metronome and to focus on timing above all else! At the end of the day what makes a player a pro is the ability to play in excellent time as well as the ability to play the parts in several different spots on the neck so you can adjust your parts to what other people are playing. Having the right feel and knowing how to play around others comes with experience but rhythm and fundamentals can be learned right away

Great advice. Hey I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on the new song by cityalight this is the day. We really want to play it in our church but I'm not good enough yet to figure out how to play over chords. Preferably in capo 1. Man that would be much appreciated

Hi there. I thrown in the deep myself once. On of the worship leaders was a guitar player. He called me on a Saturday afternoon while I was at my guitar lesson.. to tell me that I'm up to play at the evening service. I freaked out. But went for it. I had my first guitar a classic nylon strings.. lol. that was the past lol. Now I'm a member of the worship team. But I consider myself an intermediate player. I'm more of a smooth and soft player at the church. We have different lead guitarists, but we don't play together most of the time. We are split in different teams to play different services depend when you are scheduled. But Like you said Brian playing with others that are more skilled than you not only improve you, but it gives you the push to be yourself and to feel more comfortable.
and yes practice is essential. e.g If I don't have the time to practice it at home, I listen at least multiple times at the song when I'm at the office.
thanks for the video. Blessings and stay safe...

Practice all you can reasonably, if you need help learning ask, usually playing with higher level musicians means you have a treasure chest of knowledge in front of you. They will always respect a musician who cares and practices.

This was a great talk on this subject. I would say I am an intermediate player, I learn via CZcams, worshiponline tabs. But I practice my tail off, had youtube and wo tabs not been available, I would be playing chords only 😬 I really need to learn guitar theory and how to improvise parts in a particular key.

  • @Billatronic
    @Billatronic Před 2 lety +5

Biggest tip I would add to this is that it's ok if what you play isn't exactly like the recording. If the part is too fast/complex, it's likely you can simplify the part in a way that the congregation won't know the difference. This decreases the chance of making a mistake because you were stretching yourself beyond your current skill level

    • @aldrinclementina4297
      @aldrinclementina4297 Před 2 lety

exactly. In my case I'm the only lead guitarist that have to play a certain song, while the recording has more than one guitar. I choose to play the lead guitar and if there is space I'll play the other guitar parts like the filling parts or the semi- rhythm ones.

This is similar to my story. I tried out for guitar at my church and the worship pastor at the time said, "Not bad, not bad. But do you play an lead stuff?" I said no and he said that they really needed a lead player. So I was thrust into lead guitar. I met the challenge and love it. Still learning all the time. I'm grateful for his trust and faith in my ability to learn and get better.

This was super helpful. Long story short, after 20 years of playing acoustic/electric rhythm guitar for worship I’ve been asked to play lead guitar. I consider myself an intermediate lead player at best. I’ve been practicing but don’t yet know which songs will be played for my week. My week is the end of the month and they don’t release the sets until two weeks Pryor so that makes me a little nervous. Im not a shredder but more of a texture guy (edge-U2). I’ve been practicing songs from previous weeks hoping that one or more songs will be played again. Right now im just trying to perfect my technique and studying the lead worshipper so I understand how he flows. Anything else I should be doing.

I'm in this very situation. Intermediate guitar player playing with much better musicians. I was quickly thrown into a lead player role and from week-to-week, I get better. I put in a few hourse each week to make sure I know what I am going to play when we go to rehearse and go live. It's challenging, but quite rewarding and I know this is an area I can serve God and have fun too. Thanks for the video!

In our team, our leader has a Master's in music, plays multiple instruments well and can play almost anything by ear and on the fly without music in front of him. He often forgets that the rest of us don't have those skills, and need time to assimilate information and practice before rehearsal and then a service. We do our best, but it is frustrating to deal with.
We have never failed to put it together though, which also made me realise that sometimes you can cope with things you didn't know or hadn't practiced.
