    Thank you Victoria. Your delaying tactics were enough to enable me to beat Stephen by one minute. Your ÂŁ50 is in the post. Same again at the next race Stephen and I are both in?
    Stephen - I used to have the same issue with gels that you have but I tried High5 gels and found that they work for me. At London, I had one just before the start and then 7 on the way around. I don't mind the taste or texture and no stomach problems though I did still have the sticky finger issue. Maybe you just need to find the make that work for you.
    I'm in awe of your splits. I can't run anywhere as consistently as that, but then I do very little flat tarmac. I also managed to hit my bad point at 13 miles rather than you 20 miles. I did get a half marathon PB in the first half but the second was so hard and slow in comparison.
    Well done for getting around even if it isn't one where you were at your best. You know the reasons and will be back stronger and better once you can get the training in.

      Thumbs up for the High5 gels. In a few weeks going for my first marathon and a friend suggested High5 gels. Tried them out, and they work for me. They sit very well in my stomach, and my stomach isn't always easy to please.

    I used to do a two-day depletion. I actually felt tons better the first time I did it which is the opposite of how you were meant to feel. It turned out that cutting out bread made me a lot fresher so I try and minimise bread intake to this day.
    Interesting how the lack of training spiralled into poor mental preparation and execution.
    Know Your Why springs to mind.

    Just subbed! Well done on all your marathons. Wow! I wish I had support like that, handing me anything over the railings would have been amazing!! You are a lucky man, and you clearly love Victoria very much! Talking of gels, I never have experienced any boost or burst of energy, even with the caffeine gels. I'm not sure what is supposed to actually happen. I still seem to just continue to tire as the marathon goes on in spite of taking on 40-60g per hour (I weight 8stone!) It's all a total mystery to me tbh, so yeh if anyone knows please do share!

    Amazing how close Garmin race predictor is, I found exactly the same, missed several weeks of training due to a broken toe. Garmin said I was going to be 18mins slower than London 2023, ended up 21 mins slower, even splits up to 31k telling myself that I could keep those to the end. Nope, no mental drive, no pbs to push for, only pain. Result reflected my fitness level. Great thing with the marathon is we can reset and shoot again. Thanks for the great video's đŸ‘đŸ€™đŸ‘

    I love this video! Tracked you on the app and thought that you were a bit off your usual MP or overall Marathon time but knew there was more there. It really is about mindset and what you want and also since you already accomplished a good time, I wonder if it's just a matter of finishing at a decent time sometimes. And of course, never blame Victoria, haha. I'm training for Chicago and going to practice with gels and see what's working and what's not.

    Stephen. Ask yourself honestly. How many people are meeting someone in the crowd to pick up nutrition? Certainly not sub elite runners like you. So you have to carry this. My absolute top tip for you is....get a 500ml squeezy bottle. Fill it will 3 times concentrate of a sports drink that agrees with you. Then when you approach an aid station..take a small mouthful of the sports drink concentrate and then grab some water from the aid station and drink that. This massively helped me...esp because all races have differnt on course drinks...good luck

    I would never ever risk meeting a family member my fuel at a major marathon especially not London lol-thats incredible it worked as well as it did. I can see it would work loads on the trails and ultras multiple times. Ive got Leeds in a couple of weeks but keep getting ill too, just gonna dial the expectations back abit and carry 2 bottles of coke lol(I dont do gels either-feel like its against some kinda code of conduct!) Good luck with your health and hope your running somewhere near your potential soon. Great vlogg

      We first did it when I did a PB in London in 2016 and it seemed to work fine. We did it again at Goodwood, which is laps and dead easy and then we did it again in Paris last year and it worked well. Unfortunately this year it didn’t work. It is always a risk in London. In Berlin I carried my own stuff but I hated it. I don’t want to be carrying anything (although of course I carry a camera most of the time!!) thanks so much for your thoughts on this. Good luck with Leeds. Do the best you can and enjoy!

    One of your best videos!! In a way it’s good to see that a runner of your experience still gets things wrong or the training/race doesn’t go your way. I think you’ve highlighted the struggles of marathon training really well. It’s ok that things don’t work out. There will be another training run, another training session or another race. Like I’ve already said, great video! đŸ‘ŒđŸŒ have you used tailwind for nutrition? It’s new to me but I feel it works well.

      @FilmMyRun  Pƙed 27 dny +1

      Thank you s much Alec. Really appreciate your comments. I have tried Tailwind, although only on ultra races. Never considered trying it for 26.2. It always makes me sick after about 30 miles, so a marathon might be just right!

  • @BenHack
    @BenHack Pƙed 26 dny

    Hey Stephen, you should give Endurance Tap a try from Canada. I reckon you might really dig it if you can get your hands on it in the UK. It's straightforward and all-natural - just Maple Syrup, Sea Salt, and Ginger. So basically, it's got energy, electrolytes, and ginger to soothe the stomach. Unlike thick gels, it's smooth, not overly sweet, and has a slight salty kick that you hardly notice when you're in the zone. Plus, the packaging is neat with a small screw top, so no sticky fingers. I think it might be just what you're after. Sadly, I can't get it here in Mexico, but I actually make my own. It's pretty simple, then I just pour it into a small flask.

  • @emksteve

    Great video Stephen! I’d encourage you to have another go at getting to grips with gels - Your current method is certainly not optimal (poor Victoria - the pressure to find you must be awful!) and taking away that stress knowing that you have everything you need on you would be great for both your confidence and psyche. The technology has moved on considerably since you stopped using them in terms of dual carb sources, so you might be surprised to find that the likes of Maurten or Precision Hydration settle better on your stomach. They are the undisputed optimal fuelling strategy for those of us without the luxury of elite drink stations!

  • @Dekedence
    @Dekedence Pƙed 17 dny

    I share you sentiments with gels. I use them out of necessity in halfs / fulls, but I just really hate the texture they create in the mouth. This gloopy, claggy feeling that makes you immediately beg for a water station (I know time my gels to just before water stations). I know I need the energy boost, but it distracts my run so much.
    Especially Maurten, it's the consistency of toothpaste in my opinion. HIGH5 Aqua is the only ones I can stomach.

    For fuel to take with you maybe you should try some sort of gummy candy that you can pop in your mouth and drink watermelon juice with some electrolytes powder around mile 13 or 14. Just some ideas to test out hope they help. Also try to to do a pick up a little bit sooner like around mile 14-15 cause it won't be quite as crowded cause everyone is trying to get their nutriention supplies later on after mile 16 from what I've seen at marathons.

    We all face times when injury, illness or something else means you have no hope of running the time you wanted to. In my experience, in those times the best thing to do to make the race (whatever the distance) relevant and enjoyable is to offer to pace someone to their goal. This certainly isn't a criticism but I suspect you would have got far more enjoyment pacing someone to break 3.20 for the first time than running your own race without really having anything on the line.

    I like to mix Tailwind fuel at about triple strength in a small collapsible flask. It’s not at gel consistency but definitely thicker than regular strength fuel. It’s a way that I can get enough electrolytes and carbs in as I run. Then I also drink plain water out of another flask. It’s worked really well for me.
