  • This is an instructional video to help teach young hockey goalie's proper butterfly technique. In the video I use several excerpts from multiple sources, including Zach Sikich's terrific DVD series: ProHybrid Training.

    I played goal all of my life up until about five years ago. I'm 60 now. I never could get into the butterfly position no matter how much I stretched or tried lol. I really wanted to be able to get into this position but I couldn't. I used the Tony Esposito stance and I was a left-hander too like him. The style of goaltending now in the NHL is much more efficient and effective than it was when I was growing up playing. Much more fun to watch now too

      I played roller and street hockey when I was a kid and butterfly wasn't a thing. I just started playing again at the ripe old age of 45. Butterfly was definitely daunting. I can't tell you how many times I dropped to my knees and landed on the flat face of my pads.😂😂😂😂 I just kept looking up videos and trying different strapping techniques for my pads and eventually I got it. Now it's like second nature to drop into the butterfly.

    Marty Brodeur showed me that stopping the puck means you do anything possible to keep it from going past you, meaning Butterfly isn't always effective.

    goaltending has improved more in the past 25 years than have any of the other positions. i believe the reason for that is the development of modern goalie techniques and increased athleticism.
    if you don't believe me, watch a hockey game from the early 1990's. A lot of the goals they score would have you scratching your head if modern goaltenders gave the up today.

    In the image at 0:42 it shows a blocking butterfly on the left where the stick blade is angled off the ice... Is it supposed to be like this or should the blade be flat?

    • @wladd77
      @wladd77  Před 8 lety +1

      +Matthew Reardon Hi Matt. In a blocking butterfly, the stick should be out in front of you, on the ice but at an angle so it creates a ramp for pucks that are shot straight on to pop up into your belly where you can smother them.

    • @matthewjr1982
      @matthewjr1982 Před 8 lety

      +Bill Ladd Thanks, Bill! It looks like in that picture at 0:42 that the toe of his blade is off the ice enough to let a puck under.. but maybe it's just the angle of the camera...

      Yeah angled will direct the puck to the boards and away from the net or to your belly. Holding it flat will have a high chance of giving up juicy rebounds

    If u drop down when someone shoots, it's most likely they will score. Wait to see where the puck is going, and then u make your move. And keep your eye on the puck until you stop it. ;)

  • @klauskarlkraus
    @klauskarlkraus Před 9 lety +1

    this hybrid thing (vh position) is not good as you can see. standing in the angle the camera stands you can see plenty open space. good shooters will shot through the gap between your head and post

    • @sonicismybrawler
      @sonicismybrawler Před 9 lety

      It's not any different in the stance or the butterfly. There is gonna be open space unless you are Ben Bishop big.
      If a good shooter beats you with a good shot can you really feel bad about it? Shorter guys like me (5'9) are not gonna be able to get the entire top of the net. We just have to hope we're fast enough to react and snag/block/chip it away before it gets there.

    • @klauskarlkraus
      @klauskarlkraus Před 9 lety

      David Cupp i am 6`3" but what i meant is that you are creating open space that would be blocked in an other position yourself if you use the VH in the wrong place. and that in my opinion is what this guy does. if the shooter is standing where the camera does you can see that the shooter can easily shoot "around" you far post.

    • @CaptainWalrusGames
      @CaptainWalrusGames Před 9 lety +1

      klauskarlkraus Well I mean in that circumstance me personally wouldnt use the VH to combat that angle.

    • @cflargofan
      @cflargofan Před 9 lety

      klauskarlkraus If you use the VH correctly, that won't happen. Also there is no other effective way to combat those angles for butterfly goalies.

    • @johntheirish86
      @johntheirish86 Před 8 lety

      +klauskarlkraus The VH is only meant to protect wrap arounds from the back of the net while using your vertical posted leg to push off and shift to the otherside of the net when puck carrier moves to other post. If the puck is in front of the goal line than VH should not be used.

    On your blocker side while executing the one knee up one knee down , how can you get rid of that hole in the corner ? I get caught on that hole a lot.. Especially in AAA when your in a tournament and you lose cause of that large hole
