  • Too many 5 hole goals? It could be your pads or maybe your stick, but it's probably your technique. Jeff Hall explains. Ben Stanchfield from U of Nebraska club hockey demonstrates.

By far, one of the best videos out there on the 5 hole coverage. Love how you showed us what exactly is happening behind the knees and legs. THAT is what I wanted to see. Gotta see what's going on back there, and no video has done that except yours! Bravo!!

This is the first video that I've seen, that shows how to properly wear the leg pads. I used to use a 27" stick, because I thought I was lifting the stick on shots. When I tried a 25", I found that the stick actually covers the five hole better, and doesn't lift off the ice. Too bad you didn't post this years ago.

    Those pads you pulled out
    Take stress off the hips.
It's important to close that 5 hole tight but those pads are meant to level
    The leg and hip joint

I'm not sure I understand. Those pads just rest on the inside of the pants. They don't support the joints in any way. I think removing them might actually take stress of the hips by allowing the knees to stay under the hips instead of forcing the thighs and knees further apart. Can you explain your comment to me?

My knee locks keep hitting before I can close me

I trimmed down my knee blocks to help get my knees closer, they were way too big for me. I used a razor, then used duct tape to cover it all up.

And if you drop your elbow the stick drops to the side.

Bob uses 22”… I use 24” and I’m 5’5”. Very short goalie, does that necessarily mean my stick is automatically too big? Because it’s been working really well so

No, you're 24" should perfect for you. Most pro goalies use 25" or 26". Bob is in an exception and that doesn't apply to everyone. But I like to point it out because a lot of 5'5" goalies think they need a 26".

@@PatrickRwhaah thanks. I was worried, I snapped my 24” and my backup is a 22” and noticed it horribly. So I ordered a new one. Thanks for the answer!

you can always shave paddle off it also helps holding the stick

      I'm 5'2" and use a 26"

Bob uses a 27 shaved down paddle to 22 or 22.5 something like this
