Okay don't get overworked with getting water-clear categorizations for touhou characters. They were depicted from complicated perspectives just like their real-life and mythological/religious counterparts be. ZUN intentionally emphasizes themes like societal complexity, the many faces of a person or belief, ontological truth being shadowed by perceptive preferences, etc. Traces of concepts like shuugou(習合), the 'meh too many gods brain hurt lets fuse them into fewer ones' process commonly seen in Japanese beliefs in history , goes even further in Touhou. There's more but enough for today.
tldr; Touhou lore is confusing bc real life lore is much deeper.
Anyway, your lore-digging videos are quite inspiring, and they certainly deserve more views.
With the knowledge along with the talents you have to make videos about many elements of the Touhou lore, I think you should not hold yourself back avoiding spoilers. Many of your subscribers I bet are lore enthusiast so I am sure they are safe from getting spoiled. Maybe just avoid spoilers of recent games or manga chapters like Zun suggests.
My suggestion would be to just give viewers a heads up for spoilers and a time stamp they can skip to.
Going full range on your videos should the best way to go specially if you are going to eventually tackle topics like Sages.
Thank you, I'm flattered! Though I am hesitant to include spoilers, because 2hu Bites was always intended to be a step-off point for newcomers and old fans. Truth is, the lore enthusiasts already know most of what I have to say, so I want to also be able to bring Touhou to a new audience. And my view analytics support this too, I get a lot of viewership from people that don't know much about Touhou. So I will consider it, but I think for now, I will avoid spoilers. Honestly making two separate series for the hardcore lore fans and literally everyone else sounds great ! I'd absolutely love to see you do that. There's one small issue though : it's twice the amout of work for videos going over similar themes, so it might not be as engaging to make. Plus, we've been shown that extensive lore research can prove fruitless or damaging to your mental health, so it all depends on how far you're willing to speculate. I'd still be overjoyed seeing your new content either way.
This is a very thoughtful comment, thank you! However, I think that I would have difficulty making the separation between the two series. I think the content I make best is content that appeals to both hardcore and casual fans, and I'm not sure I could separate the two. I feel like the content I would make for casual fans would end up feeling dumbed down or insulting, and the content for hardcore fans could come across as pretentious or obfuscated.
So I think making videos that are rudimentary enough for casual fans to understand and detailed enough for hardcore fans to learn from is the best way to go, and I think my cosmology video and my next lore video both managed to strike that balance. How about vampire? The Japanese for vampire is kyuketsuki (吸血鬼), which has a kanji for oni (鬼), does that mean Remilia and Flandre are also oni?
Well, not necessarily. My point in comparing Kanji is just to point out one way that amanojaku and oni are similar, among many others (horns, hell origins, similar mythological roots). Vampires don't have most of those connections, so I would say no. In this case, the 鬼 Kanji can just be a suffix meaning evil or malign, not necessarily oni.
Kinda but also not really? The name kyuketsuki (吸血鬼) translate to blood sucking demon which is what vampire do and in the lore of Touhou, it was specifically because they share the kanji with oni so they share some of their weaknesses such as sardine head and zetsunbun or fried bean festival and Remilia also said that she hate having beans throw at her like the oni. So there is a high chance they are oni but at the same time we don't have concrete confirmation for it.
Basically Oni and Demon are the same word. The japanese simply use that word the same way we do because Oni are the exact same representation in their culture as demons do in ours. Which is why they are compared to demons because they have so much more in common with them than ogres. In other words a lot of words use oni, but only one spelling means the exact reference to the youkai. The japanese may not differentiate undead from demons as much as we do either. While we often see it as 2 different things in fiction they seem to see it as undead are a type of demon.
They are youkai as well because they are regarded as the strongest japanese youkai in general.
I think it's mentioned somewhere that Remilia did gain oni weaknesses like beans and holly branches when she moved to Japan. So yeah vampire is a subspecies of oni, but only when in Japan.

This is a big "technically", but technically yes and no. In Touhou (not necessarily in real Japanese mythology), "Oni" can be used to refer to the species, which is what the video is about, or it can generally refer to any kind of malevolent creature. In the latter use, devils, demons, and many other kinds of youkai can be called "oni", though they are not the same species as Suika and Yuugi. Urumi Ushizaki is an ushi-oni, which is not an oni by species, it is slightly different. However, she is still an 'oni' because she is an evil creature who lives in hell.
