Carnivory - a cure or a risk? - Diet Doctor Podcast with Amber O’Hearn

- Many have referred to a ketogenic diet as “extreme,” “restrictive” and “potentially dangerous.” Now, those same concerns have focused on an all-meat carnivore diet. Although it is new in popularity, people have been practicing a carnivore diet for decades, and possibly centuries.
Does that mean it is safe and without concern? Not necessarily. There is much we still don’t know about eating only meat, and Amber admits that. With her balanced and intellectual approach, she helps us understand the complexity of defining if this diet is “safe,” and helps us understand who might benefit most.

Ive been on Carnivore for one year now..my arthritis and psorisis are GONE after 20 yrs of suffering...I"m down to 122 lbs from 158...brown spots on my hands DISAPPREARED...callus at the bottom of my foot which I had a poditrist remove every month for 3 yrs is GONE..fungi toenails..GONE..I'm 61 and feel better than 41, and 51..off ALL MEDS..Ac1 perfect...amazing...thanks for the talk..I"m not crazy (like my family thinks I am)
My osteo arthritis is not changing much at all 4.5 months on carnivore. I did fix diabetes and fatty liver is gone. But weight loss stalled for 2 months now. 🤷♀️
I have suffered from Lyme's Disease over 20 years and been on Carnivore for about 8 weeks. I no longer use a cane, my hands no longer lock up, I no longer wake up in pain. I love this!!!! It has changed my life. Not going back!
Love it! Good to hear. 4 weeks in for me. Trying to get rid of Lyme arthritis and nerve pain.
Peace and blessings, I know this is an old comment but I hope you can respond. I have had chronic Lyme for a long time. Been gluten free, sometimes paleo. Just recently trying keto. Can you share about Carnivore. I am desperate need of help. My digestion is horrible. I feel like crap almost all the time. I take all these herbs and supplements but feel so bad. Am tired and frustrated of doing so much and feeling so bad. Thanks any advice is helpful

Haven't been carnivore. I've been doing meat based low carb and I've had a lessening of symptoms. I eat meat, low carb veggies some berries and goat kefir. Also egg yolk in chicken meat broth. Lots of water with cayenne pepper. Will embark on fungal and parasite cleanse soon. Blessings

Try carnivore for a few weeks. It won’t do you any harm and may work!
You need to eat nose to tail - ie eat organ meat, skin fat eetc as well as flesh.
Love Dr and Amber!!! Great interview!
I agree Dr Berry! I switched to carnivore and I feel a lot better..Thanks for your video as well regarding this matter!
Hey, Doc. I just left your live podcast, then Neisha's "Week" video.
I just listened to your common mistakes ppl do starting carnivore over 2 yrs. Ago! Thanks Dr. Berry
Look who showed up for the party. None other than the great Doctor Berry.
Whoa! A celebrity!
Amber is the queen of carnivory. I had been keto for a while before I stumbled on her interviews back in 2017. I then heard Dr Baker. I tried carnivore (from keto), and within 3 days back pain gone..... I can recreate the back pain any time I reintroduce them. carnivore for nearly 2 years now and never felt better, nor will I ever change
I had the same experience, decades of back pain gone. Im like an ox now. I can also induce the pain with plants. The last time i did it the pain started right in the center of my spine. Like i was hit with a hammer..
Just today the work i did would have left me crippled for weeks. Its no problem now, its amazing.
Wow I got to try this
Dr Berry and Dr Paul Saladino are also very good.
It warms my heart to watch such a civilized exchange. This is a great interview.

This was one of THE most respectful and informative interviews I've ever seen. On anything. Dang. Excellent questions by Scher and O'Hearn is always so well-spoken and thoughtful. Thank you for this!
Perfect commentary on these 2. I am just so impressed at the level of intelligence and respect shown here.
...it’s hard to unlearn what one perceives as a truth. Great perspective of an alternative. Still boggles my mind - how ignorant we are about human physiology and nutrition. Love this video.
Of course. The human digestive system is designed for food ingestion and secretion. And we must not compromise the integrity of this important system that feeds our life.
It suggests that we are being manipulated.

@@lemonj5658😂✌🏼
I believe that we have definitely been manipulated. Have you heard of the new study stating that some sugar filled cereal is healthier than eggs?? I think it was a Thames study.
I'm exactly the same...I can't eat any plants. Even if this way of eating does pose some sort of a risk, I'd rather live a quality shorter life than a longer one full of suffering. My mental health has never been better. This is such a wonderful podcast!! Thank you both for all of the great information!
How do you avoid scurvy and keep your cholesterol down?
Robert Hollandsworth Cholesterol is a lie and you only need high intake of vitamin c to digest carbs, meat has small amount of vitamin c needed for no carb
Josh Lockie what do mean cholesterol is a lie? It is the measurement used to indicate the amount of plaque buildup in your arteries. If your cholesterol is over 150, you are at a significantly increased risk for heart attack. People with a cholesterol below 50-75 have ZERO risk of heart attack, heart disease, stroke, or clot. A plant based vegan diet is how you get to that point as your body produces all the cholesterol it needs.
I agree, my sister can eat a mound of salad, veggies and fruit multiple times a day. I have tried but I can not. I end up bloated, constipated and miserable. Fruit was a bigger cause of bloating than I ever imagined. We just have different systems, so glad I do not have to suffer anymore.
@@roberthollandsworth1809 watch Ivor Cummins CZcams channel and you will discover the truth on heart disease
BTW, it is a well established scientific fact that dietary cholesterol has absolutely nothing to do with heart disease
heart disease is caused by inflammation from insulin resistance caused by high carb diets
I'm 60. Excellent health. Muscular. Abundant energy. Never eat veggies. Never liked them. Could never get myself to eat them. My blood panels just came back with great numbers. Just realized that if I'm at this stage of my life and I feel great and strong and testing shows no sign of trouble, veggies must not be that important. Never thought about that until watching this video.
Do you eat fruits and if so, which ones?
As for "many people are eating plants and doing just fine" - I don't think so. People are not "doing just fine". My argument is:
- people have all sorts of problems but we don't know about them cos they don't tell - I had many problems and people thought I was doing fine, I wasn't telling anyone abut my problems;
- you don't just get problems over night, it takes years, little pain here, headache there, when you are over 40 this, when you are over 50 that etc. I don't know ANY old person without any problem/illnesses, problems arrive sooner or later.
Paleomedicina knows this - when someone comes to their clinic and they are ill, they always test their healthy partner, too. And what they ALWAYS see is that partners have the same gut permeability, they just haven't developed any problems/illnesses yet. But in the future they will. Gut permeability guaranties you're gonna get ill with time. Why do you think there's so much cancer these days? All those people diagnosed with cancer are "doing just fine and thriving" until they don't anymore and get cancer and die. Or something else. And one more thing - all those people "thriving" are fairly young, wait until they get older.
Yes, I agree. Been studying the effects of plant oxalates on the body. Everything’s “fine” until the oxalate build up over many years rears it’s ugly head. And then...you’re no longer “fine.”
Well said maver
Fantastic explanation, have been using a very similar argument with multitudes of people. You're spot on correct!
You're absolutely right. I look at all my friends and family who eat diets very low in animal products, and now I see them as ticking time bombs.
They admit to a little depression, or a bit of IBS, or a touch of eczema, or just a funny bump that their doctor wants to biopsy - and I feel so sad knowing that their health can only continue to degrade as long as they keep eating the same way.
Hopefully the tide is changing, and real information will begin to percolate through the public consciousness.
I've been carnivore for almost 6 months. Tried to incorporate some carbs and plants back into my diet but my depression and arthritis came back and hit me harder than ever.
Thanks for the interview. I love Amber.❤
I've also noticed my joint pain return when eating some veggies again.

It was so hard to get over my brain telling me I need vegetables, along with family and friends.. But I feel so much better not eating them. I bloat after a salad, was very telling. I eat veggies a couple times a month mainly just for certain recipes.
Every indigenous culture used ALL of caught game - nose to tail - be that bison, elk, fish or seal. It was consumed or crafted for use , never discarded, because it is valuable. I use egg shells and fish bones in my house plants - they grow like crazy. Terrific interview.
Your podcast and Dr. Barry’s podcast who’s in the common section today has literally changed my life with their information. I am now a mostly carnivore, and I feel so much better. I no longer have high blood pressure. I no longer have anxiety. Or depression, since changing my diet to meat-based, so keep up the great work!
I like her term, "plant-free diet".
It allows animal derived foods other than meat, and suggests 'liberation' from plant foods.
I've been dabbling with the term "faunivore", as in "flora and fauna".
Excellent video, brilliant guest and wonderful interviewer.
Thanks heaps.

I like "faunavore" a lot. Amber makes a good argument against "zero carb," but "carnivore" is just as ambiguous/misleading/inadequate.

Until I found Amber's blog and other work, carnivory looked to be an "extreme thing" only for the body building "bro" types. They take steroids too so how healthy can this be? But now having tried it myself for the past year, I am so glad I found her as well as Dr Georgia Ede. Keto helped me reduce my seizures quite a lot but going carnivore made them go away completely. The weight loss was a nice side effect.
Re: fiber, one easy (possible) answer is that if we're eating plants, we need fiber. If we're only eating meat and other animal products, we don't.

What a fabulous interview! I love Amber and I love Dr. Scher! Amazingly well done. I have been nervous about going carnivore because of my cardiovascular indicators (high CAC, high triglycerides, low HDL, high CRP). But after listening to this interview I'm thinking that the potential benefits (for things like the chronic inflammatory response I have in my body to long term Lyme) might outweigh the other unknowns. Wow. Just Wow. I want to share all of Dr. Scher's podcasts on my FB timeline!
Usually on Carnivore, triglycrrides go down, LDL goes up (yes it's normal and a good thing), HDL stays the same or goes up. You CRP should go down the longer you are eating this way.

Plant based, keto, and carnivore comments are all very similar success stories. I believe the elimination of processed foods, junk foods, and sugar is the common denominator.
To a certain degree that is true, but long term there are too many phytotoxins and conversely, nutrient deficiencies consuming solely plants.
One of the most informative and enjoyable interviews I’ve ever watched.

If any of you carnivores ever visit the Balkans or Turkey, you better try kokotetsi. All lamb organs put through a spit and then the small intestine is wrapped around it before it roasts over coal. Can’t get better nose-to-tail restaurant food than that!

Been carnivore for 2 months, life is great these days. The trick to successful carnivorous diet is obtaining 60-80% of calories from fats. Beef suet is delicious and a staple in my diet. It is packed with vitamins, unlike mct oil or butter.
Butter is packed with vitamins. MCT oil is gross
What Kind of vitamines are in beef suet ? Last time I have checked no much

What I took from it: keep an open mind and heart and do whatever works for you specially of you are sick.
Why don’t we stop calling any of it a DIET! 💥
Bret, You are an amazing interviewer! Where did you learn your technique?
Carnivore or a meat based keto diet both work extremely well. Carnivore is also keto since you are in ketosis when eating carnivore. Great talk. The bacon experiment is an easy way to dabble with zero carb.
yeah, when eating almost only meat your ketone production never really stops because even glucagon conversion of protein to glucose is very slow, regardless of protein intake.
Plants don’t grow very well in the snow. They ate what’s available. Fish is now poisoned and is not sustainable and the Inuits are suffering from health problems now. But that’s also with the introduction of western processed foods.
I will not be a vegetarian again unless there is no meat or eggs available. I feel so much better mostly carnivore. I cant let go of coconut milk, coconut flakes, limes/lemon or cilantro. I never will either lol
Great interview, carnivore 5 mo... Serious back pain is cured, mental strength regained, so much more.
But how’s your blood work
Robert Hollandsworth It’s all fine. Who cares? My blood work was ALWAYS perfect even though I had obvious deficiencies and numerous autoimmune diseases. Stop relying on mainstream nonsense.
I think the modern SAD American diet and vegetarian diets are way more destructive to human health than ketovore of carnivore diets. Our hunter-gatherer ancestors followed a mostly meat diet and that's what we are designed to eat as proven by our digestive design being similar to meat eaters and completely different than herbivores as.one example.
I have tried carnivore several times. Every time, after 1 or 2 weeks, I get disgusted by meat and I am not able to eat it anymore. Last time, I, then, started back a keto diet but with less protein because I wasn't able to eat much meat, the end result, my appetite and my weight increased...I"m now increasing my proteins and my fasting... I guess carnivore is not for me (?)
It's probably because there wasn't enough fat and salt in your meat. Add a big dab of butter to your meat just before eating, you'll never grow tired of it❤
Try the GAPS diet. Feeling nauseous about meat is sign that something is imbalanced in your digestive tract.
Loved the questions thrown by the interviewer!
19:50 "Supplementation usually leads to more problems than it solves."

Great interview. Every interview with Amber is great and educational.
The question is, how do you hang in there until the sweet cravings have gone away.
Amber is really calm and serene with a broad knowedge of the subjet matter ♥️
Has anyone considered that it’s nit plants themselves but the lack of nutrition due to the soil and the addition of added chemicals for fertilization?
Great interview. I really like Amber. Good interviewer too.
This sounds like Mikhaila Peterson’s story. Amazing.
I could be wrong, but my opinion is most people have no idea what to eat even some doctors or dietitians
To me, I was sick and miserable. Now I'm healthy and happy. I'll stick with carnivore.
I std overindulging in carbs with OMAD. Now I think I will go 3 days keto and the 3-4 days carnivore as a way to try this. I was mostly keto with cheat days before. It starts today!
10+ years carnivore. my only issue is that my hunger is not very easily satiated without eating a lot of protein (to the point of easily being 2X or 3X the recommended for ketosis). though I do not get any obvious medical issues if I eat extremely-low-carb plants such as plain greens.
Amber is so smart. She is a marvellous communicator.
She is so wise!
Great discussion getting at belief, theory and evidence
It would be good to see these experts talk about carnivore diets such as in circumpolar populations; also, if they might take a clear view, they'd realize that there is no single story. The world is vastly diverse.
Again this shows that nutrigenomic variability is real!
The point about the lack of multigenerational population wide studies on veganism being as valid as the criticism of carnivory, yet somehow veganism gets a pass, is well made.
Interestingly, the virologist working with me on my past-viral syndrome recommended a low-carb diet. I'm still experimenting to find the best balance for me.
The interviewer is excellent
I loved it !!! 😍
Excellent information....
Thanks for sharing. 😉👍👌👊💪
Great interview and civilized.
Well done . A good introduction to the carnivore diet. Lots more to learn is a statement of the obvious! If it does work for people with depression could be a useful part of a strategy . Good to see clear thinkers like Psychiatrist Geogia Ede writing and speaking about her experiences with patients
I was looking at an old, out-of-print book recently. It talked about studies in cats, where they were fed only muscle meat. The cats eventually lost bone mass and developed deforming osteoporosis. The concluding observation was that wild carnivores also gnaw on bones, the calcium from which supports their bone structure. As a result now, in zoos, carnivores are given either bone meal with their meat, or bones to gnaw on. Humans aren't cats obviously, but I worry about the risk of bone breakdown in human carnivores. Since bone weakening isn't 'felt' it could easily be happening despite feeling good.
Vinessa Nevala I am glad I am not a cat.
Carnivore diet is also a high fat diet. Humans also die if they eat only red meat. They call it "rabbit starvation'. Don't try this if you are afraid to eat quite a lot of animal fat, on the meat, and probably dairy fat, like butter and cream.
@@johnsveitch humans will not die if they eat only red meat - they die if they eat too much lean, unfatty meat. look up lapin starvation or protein poisoning. many people have lived purely on red meats (beef, lamb, bison, etc)
Vinessa Nevala Bone broth is part of this diet, and nose to tail is encouraged...
You can also eat some organs, cartilage when carnivore, as well as bone marrow and bone broth.
Is this talk with Spanish subtitles or dubbed. Trying to help someone who has a lot of stress, mood issues etc.
Here's a question.
Mushrooms?
We can eat them and be plant free.
Anyone have any thoughts on mushrooms?
I would make a tea out of them, so you can remain magic ;)
I like mushrooms for the same reason, since being a fungus, it is not of the plant kingdom, which is what I consider carnivory to be: No food from PLANT kingdom. For me, plants are fine if used for flavor only(condiments), just as what I use mushrooms, cream and cheese for.
For me, food= steak, eggs, ground beef, bacon, sausage and chicken. NO SUPPLEMENTS.
Do carnivory the way that works for you, not how someone else dictates.
Minoo S Occasionally I'll sprinkle potassium salt on steak or ground beef, in addition to table salt and pepper. I don't worry about it too much, though.
Minoo S creme of tartar for potassium
@Minoo S I’m late to this but have you tried Seltin? It’s easy to find in the Danish supermarkets and has 50% Na, 40% K and 10% Mg. I use it all the time here in Denmark.

SCIENCE is never going to tell people what is good for them!
Carnivore dangerous? Just think about what our ancestors ate day after day , when all modern vegetables and fruits and grains and processed dairy did not exist.
"Actuall my lab tests were all lost by the company that took them" - hmmm .
I’m hoping Bret is now more enlightened than he was here. I will try to find his more recent interviews on this topic to see if his viewpoint is based on further research and knowledge. Great interview. Amber is way ahead of the game!
Just started carnivore about a month ago. I continued to supplement with red yeast rice, omega 3 fish oil and niacin to keep cholesterol triglycerides in check.
Amber is an intelligent & Beautiful lady, I learned so much from her.
Thank you Doctor for having her.
The Kitavans eat a high carb diet, mostly sweet potatoes and yet they don't have type 2 diabetes or other metabolic diseases, why? They most likely have a high personal fat threshold. That means they were most likely nursed in infancy for a long time and developed a large amount of fat cells which means as adults they have a higher fat threshold and will not have problems of insulin resistance. Fat babies, from rich breast milk, become healthy adults. In old Europe that was known way back. Americans never wanted to have fat babies back then.
Amber is our Queen
Amber is great! Where do you need plants and their toxins?! We have been eating almost only meat for 350000 years. Carnivorous way of eating is our ancestral and natural way of eating. Species spesific. Maybe you should look at N15 data (Leipzig university). It is very clear that We are and should be carnivores.
Carnivore has really helped me maintain a very regular level in my mood. No super highs or lows. I’m sure my blood sugar levels are connected, as they remain constantly flat too.

Excellent interview...Thank you‼️
Great discussion
My perspective underscores the paramount significance of expertise and rigorous critical evaluation in the consideration of dietary guidance. With a Ph.D. in human biology and chemistry, alongside licensure as a pathologist, my insights carry substantial authority. It is disconcerting when individuals lacking medical qualifications endeavor to prescribe dietary standards, particularly when that person also has bipolar mental dysfunction and absolutely no human biological or chemistry degrees.
Grounded in the indisputable principles of human biology, my assertion underscores the body's adeptness in processing animal-based proteins and fats. However, the prevalent overconsumption of fructose and carbohydrates in contemporary diets poses significant health hazards. Emphasizing humanity's evolutionary adaptability to thrive on diets rich in essential nutrients from animal sources resonates profoundly.
While plant-based sustenance can support life, optimal health necessitates a balanced approach that prioritizes nutrient-dense animal products. My commentary serves as a poignant reminder of the imperative for informed decision-making and adherence to evidence-based dietary practices, particularly amidst the prevalent dissemination of misinformation.
Throughout history, indigenous cultures worldwide have incorporated both starches and animal proteins into their diets out of necessity for survival. In times when meat is scarce, consumption of starches, including tubers and various edible vegetation, becomes essential. In fact, some tribes must process starches to render them edible.
Notably, adverse health outcomes, including obesity and mental disorientation, are chiefly prevalent in affluent Western societies where food abundance is the norm. This underscores the paradoxical nature of nutritional health in modern times.
While it can be argued that consuming animal products is indeed healthy in societies with abundant food, it is crucial to acknowledge the detrimental effects of sugar and junk food. Furthermore, it is important to recognize that a 100% carnivore diet may not be sustainable in the long term, especially in a modern world context where such dietary habits lack comprehensive long-term studies. Conversely, the ketogenic diet, which I view as optimal, benefits from extensive long-term data.
Thoughts on the Zoe results?
I wonder if alongside beer and the opioid effects of grains, if ergot was also involved ?
She needs to get on Joe rogans podcast. Great interview, very balanced.
