  • A good look at my train rail bike design alterations after the Richard Bentley design plans. I took his engineering concepts and built my bike using metal parts instead of hardwood.

    Had a look at some tracks nearby, and noticed the inner rail is basically inline with each end of track at the joint. However the outside rail at the joint can be as much as 3/4" out and that means any wheel on the outside would be hitting the joint unless you have adequate space to allow for said discrepancies. I am currently building my own but only a guide wheel on the inside of the tracks . I have to travel 89 miles to get to abandoned tracks .

    Interesting design. I have put in quite a few miles in on railbikes, and i noticed you are running on nice shiny, well maintained track. It's pretty obvious that it is track that is "live", that is, used by trains. I hope you are running with permission, or at least you are aware of any scheduled traffic on this line. Remember that railroads do schedule specials from time to time, so don't take anything for granted. Friends of mine have had to bail off and hide the bike in the bushes. Trains will run 4 or 5 times as fast as you were going, and they can be upon you in a surprising, and possibly fatal, hurry. Think about that when you are out on a trestle or bridge or in a tunnel. Maybe I am an alarmist, but I really don't want to see anyone injured or killed, giving rail bikers a bad rep.

      Hello fellow rail biker. This was designed after Dick Bently's plans. Thank you for your concern. Yes this is a used spur with very light use for factory delivery of goods. This day was on a major holiday shutdown. My first test run. I have been on many miles of track sense. Most abondoned some occasionally used. I do a lot of research prior to using them. Fortunately I have never seen nor run across a live train and hope to never do so. My wife and children would hate to hear of a mishap. It would ruin their day, (mine too). Like all rail bikers permission is not usally available, but with 70 thousand miles of abondoned track in the U.S. we can all find places to safely ride without trespassing. Take care and see you on the rails someday.

      Thanks for the compliment. my design here was after Dick Bentley's design and plans. He used hardwood and I used old junk pieces from a bottling plant to make this out of metal instead of wood. I've used it many times and it works well for me but it is not user friendly for others. I found another design that I will like to obtain or build that seems much simpler and easier to use. It is the one that you'll find on youtube where the front wheel sets in the track or guide and it has one outrigger that comes off the seat post which seems to be the least complicated and one of the most effective track guides. Great riding to you.

      There really isn't any point of doing that, at least not compared to a standard e-bike. There is not much rolling resistance with a bicycle. That is why it is so easy to ride fairly slowly, but impossible to go faster and maintain that speed. Basically, the wind resistance goes up exponentially with speed. Most people can easily maintain 15-18mph and cannot maintain 30-35mph. It's not double, it's like 6 times the amount of energy. Going on a train track doesn't help.

    How fast can you drive with that (mph or kmh) and whats easier, drive on that railway or on asphalt?

    • @GaryESims
      @GaryESims  Před 7 lety

      Admiral Kizaru 21 miles per hour... but it is a lot of work to keep that speed. Best around 12 mph on the bike. It rides easy on the track in which it was designed for. The outrigger folds back and the front guide lifts up when I need to ride it on asphalt.

      I thought it would be faster and easier, I mean there is only the drag as resistence and that the bike would keep the speed much better, why is the bike breaking so fast?

    now to make a really cool video would be to hoock a long rope on a passing train and let it tow a trail bike but five times the speed is it too much to handle , speed wobble, could it be designed for it , maybe rubber in rope for easy start , risk of stepping into rope loop , helmet , armour , ejection seat, parachute , airbags for falling to side, paddings or air filled , even a safety cage or shell, but detachable from bike. how about a giant ball rolling o the tracks , pulled by train. ball of branches or plastic or rods pipes. and guy inside. or like could use an old car pulled behind w normal wheels on side of trracks or no rubber and iron wheels on track , but rubber coating inside them. or rope and parachute fly benind train.
