  • Ray Charles once told the world what he thinks of Elvis Presley!!
Appearing on the NBC news program "Now" Charles said, "I guess I'm going to lose at least a third of my fans," Charles, said, as he spoke quite frankly about Elvis. "To say that Elvis was so outstanding, like they say, he's the king, I don't think of Elvis like that because I know too many artists that were far greater than Elvis!! Charles, continued 'Elvis was a person who came along at the right time. "Here was a White kid that could rock and roll and the girls would swoon over him." "He was doing our kind of music. He was doing the Willie Mae Thornton Jailhouse Rock. That's Black music. So what am I supposed to get so excited about, man? I think all that stuff about saying he's the king, that's a piece of bunk." Whatever Ray, whatever.....

Elvis was the King because he revitalized American music at least twice - in 1954 combing country and r&b, and again in 1956 when he added pop to create a new style. Not only that but, maybe more importantly, he broke EVERY record in EVERY form of media for twenty years. Most records sold, most #1s, highest TV ratings, box office sales, concert attendance records, the list goes on and on... Fats Domino outsold every 50s artist by a long shot, and Elvis DOUBLED Fats' sales. Elvis was a phenomenon in vocal talent, but also in commercial appeal. That's why he is called King.

L'homme n'est plus et pourtant il est toujours là et inonde la planète de ses chansons et vidéos. Personne ne copie personne, il a pris le meilleur et les fans l'ont suivi. merci pour cette vidéo. Someone needs to mention that Elvis grew up very poor and spent much of his youth singing gospel in black churches - wheres the crime if he found he was good at it and liked it and other music genre's, people have always covered other artists music and sometimes they put a fresh take on it and make it even more popular, this has happened many times and Elvis did it over and over, but he also had his own songs as well that became huge. Just because he sang some of the same type music Ray and his generation did and did a great job is no reason to say he was no good. I love Ray Charles hes a legend, but theres no denying Elvis had one of the best voices ever heard on the planet and at least 3/4 of the planet would disagree with Rays comments and thats proven in Elvis' immense success throughout his life and even after death. You dont get into all three music halls of fame unless youre doing something right, Elvis was one of those extremely rare combinations of natural talent, an amazing voice, charisma, stage presence and looks that made him one of the best live performers in music history, keep in mind Ray could not visibly see Elvis perform so maybe much of this could not be considered from where he stood -- Hope im wrong but could it be Ray is a bit jelous of Elvis's success overshadowing his own with some of the same music-? I hope not because lets not forget even though Ray was both black and blind he over came a lot and was still one of the greats. Elvis performed more than just black music, along with gospel he did rock blues country etc. its almost as if Rays saying Elvis had no talent and its the first time ive ever heard ANYONE say that about Elvis Presley.

A time that was so inclusive. A 100 years from now or longer, anyone researching America and what was so great about it need only to watch that dance number. Elvis is completely commanding, sizzling hot the voice of a generation of massive innovation happening by everyday people in the United States.

He called Elvis a punk??? Did I miss that?? Jealousy runs deep with no talent a holes huh? When your jealous of anyone it shows that no matter what kind of talents you have yourself you are so insecure in your own gifts that you dont even believe in those gifts. How sad that is. They do the same thing with Prince who everyone treated like sh*t always. I swear its almost a curse to have anything in this life where all it ever evokes is jealousy. What ever gifts that God gives anyone they need to be grateful for and humbled by what God gave them and not throw ill will on others who God gave gifts to also. Focus on what you have and not what others have that you dont have. When your jealous of others be very careful that the Lord doesn't take away what he gave you to begin with for being unappreciative of what YOU have. All I can say is there fools only they dont realize it someone needs to open there eyes to that fact it will be a gift to them in the long run.

I am saddened by Ray Charles bringing racism into it. Elvis grew up in Tupelo and Memphis he listened and picked up what he heard. I don't like Black people accusing Elvis of stealing their music, music is like the air it is free to everyone. I have Black friends who called Elvis racist and accused him of stealing their music, I didn't defend him then but I said to myself if that happens again I will answer them back, now that is pure nonsense he loved everyone he had black members (Sweet Inspirations) in his band and he defended them when he was asked to drop the black girls, he said no black girls no Elvis, he wouldn't do the show without his girls. Elvis was colour blind when it came to race he treated everyone with respect, sad he didn't treat himself as well as he treated others and they certainly didn't treat him well just used him as a cash making machine until the burnt him out. The good news is his soul lives on and he is with his saviour, there is no colour or decriminalisation in heaven.

Thank you Paul for these videos of Elvis. During my 68 yrs on earth, and loving Elvis for 66 1/2 of those years, I've never heard the story about Ray Charles' comment. This makes me very sad because I remember being a part of the "END" that generation, and remember the bad things that happened to probably the majority of non white people, back then. Elvis, like my family, and many, many other non colored people struggled as much as they did, and maybe more than many today. This may be my only chance to help some of those people pull themselves back up. I was born in a very poor Alabama, my parents had alcohol and drug problems, so my 6 sibs and I were raised by grandma and step grandpa, who were also very poor. They took any, and all jobs they could get to support everyone else. It saddens me today how so many people NOW-A-DAY's, including some members of my own family, use the racist, and the newly, "drug addiction" disability excuse just to get everything they can for free. I am sure that most people have had struggles throughout their lives, but it seems that too many use their past as a crutch to cover their laziness, instead of taking control of their own life. And for the record, I do believe that now a days no one is purely white, or born of one race, no matter where they come from, or what year they were born. But hey, we came originally from just two people, Adam and Eve, and don't really know what color they were. If all of those who get helped would start helping themselves at one point, the world could help someone else. We've all made it this far, now let's see what's next from the younger generations. So far it's just been more hate. So freaking SAD! If you can't find happiness within yourself, you will always be dependent on someone else. And thanks again Paul for the Elvis videos, and his beautiful voice, I know he was a gift from God, but we all are.

When Elvis' music exploded on the radio in the South in a matter of days and weeks, nobody knew what he looked like, and everyone thought he was black. So the white people in the south LOVED his music, BUT THEY THOUGHT HE WAS BLACK. And they didn't love that music because of his looks, because they had no idea what he looked like. So his appeal was the music, not his race or appearance.
    Sorry, Ray, you're wrong.
What Elvis did with black rhythm and blues to make it more appealing was 3 things:
    (1) He sped it up. His version of Hound Dog is 45 or so seconds shorter than Big Mama Thornton's, and they sing the same verses and choruses, so hers isn't longer because she repeated verses to extend the song --- it's solely because he did the song much faster.
    (2) He removed the strong syncopation from the music that the black people were using. The strong syncopation blacks were using gave the feeling of the song slowing down or standing still. By removing the syncopation, the music sounds much more forward-moving.
    (3) On the vocals, he sang his words legato, smoothing them all together, whereas a lot of the blacks were singing them staccato.
If you listen to, say, Hound Dog, or Mystery Train, you'll see those improvements to the music. Taken together they gave rock 'n roll much more of a forward-moving feel, whereas the black versions of those songs were more rocking back-and-forth, or standing still. So Elvis took this rock 'n roll and infused it with the spirit of progress that was exploding in every facet of American society at the time.
