  • Japanese Sword Experts, Toru Uchikado and Taishi Tamaki, are back. On this episode of Experts Try, they’ll be recreating moves from the popular game “The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt”.
    The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing game with a third-person perspective. The game takes place in a fictional fantasy world based on Slavonic mythology. Players control Geralt of Rivia, a monster slayer known as a Witcher.
    The Sword Experts, Toru and Taishi, will recreate Light Attack, Heavy Attack and try out combos with these types of attacks. They’ll also dodge, roll and try the Whirl movements. What do you think, are these moves practical? Are they useful in a real battle? Find out in this episode of Experts Try.

    I'm here early so I'll point out the reason Geralt's moves are so flowy and complicated and dance-like is because in the books, Witcher fighting styles(primarily the wolf school Geralt is from) are based off of dancing as they often fight hordes of monsters at once or very large creatures so their attacks have to be effective in as many directions as possible, as often as possible. So all the spins and twirls are basically so Geralt can hit multiple creatures or multiple parts of a creature at once. And a Witcher can pull it off because they're superhuman and can handle all the exertion of that type of fighting as well as having the speed and precision to make spinning a viable strategy in a fight.

    One thing I noticed is that the Witchers fighting style focuses completely on pirouettes and spins because he has to constantly avoid monster attacks. I wonder if the power of his strikes comes from the spin itself or if the spinning is purely evasive and to keep him mobile. Very cool to see people trying out his style !

    • @hawkgaming3029
      @hawkgaming3029 Před 3 lety +5

      to answer your question, both the pirouette spinning is to allow you to see from all angles on who is attacking, and offensively would use all your body weight rotationally in their attacks.

    • @KedricVarangia
      @KedricVarangia Před 2 lety +1

      In my experience in western martial arts, spinning doesn't add power (your feet planted will help you deliver a much stronger strike) but I have seen two types of single spins work for evasion. I've never seen historical evidence that this was used in combat, but in modern fighting where we don't tend to die or lose fingers, it can be perfected. (or as a witcher, practicing for 90 years) I'm going to say its for evasion!

    • @KedricVarangia
      @KedricVarangia Před 2 lety

      @@hawkgaming3029 it's better to use planted feet than bodyweight. For example, modern troops kick doors down with a foot planted (except idiot militaries in countries with poor training). Think about it, a human can lift twice their bodyweight if they train for it, but if you throw your bodyweight it limits the impact to a moment and to the weight of the body. Spins have to be only for evasion and mobility, force of attack is definitely reduced.

    • @hawkgaming3029

      @@KedricVarangia your doing the wrong kind of analysis here K M this isnt about what in the real world makes you stronger at fighting a human or is best in the real world.
      We are talking about an alchemically enhanced human mutate with enhanced speed, strength, reflexes, and durability fighting things that are 2-5-10 x his strength, durability, size etc.
      This was never about how its better for you to be able to use your mass effectively as a human, this is about essentially a strong man with the reflexes of a cat using a couple pounds of steel to rip through their enemies using the advantages these mutations give.
      Or are you trying to tell us that while your fighting 3 12+ foot werewolves the smart thing to do is plant your feet because martial arts not meant for Witchers told you that your attacks will be more powerful when a witcher probably benches 4-500 lbs+ easily anyway?

    Hey! I have created and performed the witchers fighting moves in The Witcher game series. As Andrzej Sapkowski (author and creator of The Witcher universe) described in the books, pirouettes were the witchers fighting style significant elements. That's why they are so commonly used in the game choreography. Whenever you analyse video game moves you have to keep in mind that the final animation is not only the actors performance, but also game designers and animators vision, serving a visual purpose or covering some gameplay mechanics.
    You guys did a great job breaking it down. I'm honoured and hope you enjoyed it! :)

    The whirl clip really shows generally what the witcher swordmanship was about, the twirls and flairs are not just for shows, but for multiple opponents, so even when outnumbered a wicher could move gracefully and almost effortlessly between oponents and constantly keep adversaries off balance. This is why all witchers had to learn and incorporate dance into their swordplay.
    One can argue the effectiveness in real life. But remember that wichers were superhuman, and had better endurance, reflexes and was cabable of keeping track of everything on the battlefield in a much higher degree than a regular human.
    Also, you can see that in almost all spins and/or flairs he swings the blade close to his back between each strike, so there is rarely an opening at his back, and he also uses spins to constantly keep a track of every potential danger at the battlefield

    • @Seleuce
      @Seleuce Před 3 lety

      Agreed, I just said something similar, then found your post. You summarized it really well. Another fact to add is that witchers weren't specialized in fighting humans on battlefields but monsters. Partially giant creatures with enormous limbs, weird shapes, unusual body parts and lots of strength, but without human fighting techniques. Witcher techniques may or may not be practical sword vs sword, but they didn't need to be to get their contracts done. If Witchers were real, I'm sure they would have adjusted their style suitable to the opponent and would have different methods for monsters and humans/humanoids. It would only make sense, given the fact that they weren't a bunch of cutthroats, but a centuries old, well established guild with elite school type training and would know that a Zeugl and a human swordsman can't be approached the same way.
      It would just go too far to have Geralt fight in 30 different styles ingame (although it would be great!).

    Thanks for this, really cool. It's not easy to replicate game animations since the motion capture data is tweaked and timed to "feel" better in the game. The "Short Dodge" as it's called (where Geralt jumps back a short distance) is best used when your opponent is already attacking, that way they can't hope to exploit your vulnerability, not unless they're really, really fast.

    As others have said before me, witcher figthing style look a lot like dancing. They have to be agile to counter lightning fast attacks from monsters, and all the spins and whirls are also to distract and confuse the enemy. Flawless execution, congrats to these guys! Wonder how they could recreate these moves with a full armor on, though :))
