  • Japanese Sword Expert, Toru Uchikado is back on Experts Try, this time with Kaz Kobayashi, a Japanese sword fight choreographer and Katana Expert. On this episode of Experts Try, they'll be recreating moves from the popular game "Ghost of Tsushima".
    In 1274, a Mongolian invasion fleet led by Khotun Khan lands on the Japanese island of Tsushima. Jin Sakai joins with the rest of the island's local samurai, led by his uncle Lord Shimura, in an attempt to repel the invasion. The battle ends in disaster, with the samurai army killed, Lord Shimura captured, and Jin grievously wounded and left for dead.
    Jin is found and nursed back to health by Yuna, a local thief, who informs him that most of Tsushima has already fallen to the Mongols. Jin storms Khotun's stronghold at Castle Kaneda in an attempt to rescue Lord Shimura, but is defeated by Khotun in combat and is thrown from a bridge.

    This is a really good approach to this kind of "experts react." Games aren't reality, things are going to be exaggerated for readability, or changed for balance, so having martial artists whose focus is on acting and performance try these from a performance perspective is very refreshing and acknowledges those differences, because similar differences also exist when exaggerating martial arts for readability or narrative in TV or film.

    • @jaynedodd5528
      @jaynedodd5528 Před 2 lety +43

      I second this. Some months ago I watched two architects complain about building in The Sims instead of enjoying the creative freedom a video game offers. And while some things are grounded in reality, most of the time media is nothing more than entertainment. If it was always "realistic", there would be no need to play a game, I could just go out and do it myself. Watching non-gamers suck the fun out of that idea makes me wary. But absolutely, these guys made the video both educational and fun, acknowledging the truths and the exaggerations equally without getting attitudes about it. Overall good vibes with people talking about the things they're passionate about.

    I think Jin is using his kinetic vision a lot, which is why he often faces his head oddly or faces to the side. It's basically keeping your eyes relatively unfocused and centered, and using the corners of your eyes/vision to watch for movement. It's like keeping your vision wide instead of focusing down on specific parts and narrowing your vision (tunnel vision).
    The only reason I think this is because I use my kinetic vision a lot too, mainly because my eye muscles are weak and is essentially stuck forward (I can't look to the corner of my eyes). If I wanna look to the sides or behind me I have to swing my head that way. I use my kinetic vision a lot while walking and when looking behind me.

      It's used a lot when hunting or in the military. One exercise people use to develop it is to hold their hands all the way out to the side, then slowly bring them together and stop when they can just barely be seen in the peripheral vision. When someone has practiced this at random several times a day every day for a while, the next step is to randomly stop periodically and without moving the eyes, move your head left and right as slowly as possible. tl;dr it's a useful skill that people spend a lot of time training. I naturally do it anyway because I not only have terrible eyesight, I also have Asperger's which makes me very uncomfortable when I look directly at people.

    For the piercing strikes, keeping the blade sideways does indeed prevent the blade from being trapped by the body. I learned this my first year studying under sensei Jeff Marsten. Particularly when stabbing to the abdomen and the abdominal wall, with any blade, in fact, the abdominal muscles contract and flex, and will clench down on the blade, making it hard to withdraw if you have stabbed with the blade positioned up and down, but piercing sideways prevents this as the flexing of muscle causes the blade to cut further preventing your blade from being trapped by your opponent's body.

    • @JaronActual
      @JaronActual Před rokem +4

      It can also be a factor with the ribcage. The width of the blade, front to back, is bigger than the gap between ribs. Having the blade sideways decreases the likelihood it deflect off a rib, or if it does, it will be more likely to deflect up or down into a gap rather than to the outside.

      Man when he's saying that Im thinking "OKAY Maybe that WOULDNT Take out a Big Armoured bruiser Mongolian with a Shield and Spear and so on thats been raping pillaging and murdering one's people during 1200s or whatever, BUT to The People Watching him on the internet........
      MOST OF US THINK
      "NO WAY Bro He Looks JUST LIKE JIN!"
      because most of us know fookall about Swordsmanship/Kendo/Etc. to the standards of Samurai that DONT Die on a Beach where EVERY Samurai Died... because of Yuna whom, man- I'll be a little shocked if they dont Die together or Marry by the end of game after we BECOME the REAL Storm that Drives the Mongolians away, which I think is where a Lot of the lore about Sakai's blade etc come from...
      I mean isnt the truth that it was JUST the Storm that ruined things and PROBABLY Mongolian internal socio/geopolitical whatevers back home so they just thought "Man this is a BAD Storm and we Robbed a LOT and had fun lets go back home and Hope the Khan doesnt Kill us!" or whatever...
      But IM LOVING the storymode and Im Here because of trying to determine whether or not the deluxe horse is better or just Whatever Colour I want and Im concerned I wont be able to name him the same as the first horse because I liked Kage...
      Man they get us emotional over fictional horses from an alternate telling of a horrible war...
      If in reality there was a Resistance group of Samurai using Ninja style tactics and other things that were considered Dishonourable previously I wouldnt be disappointed at all and Man is it a better story and Myth for stuff that COULDVE been used to Help train generations if they were speaking of a Legendary Warrior that Refused to Die Rescues his Uncle and so on then does ALL this other wild Impossible "only a Videogame Character could Do That!" kinda stuff.... that makes me think "WHAT NO WAY MY HORSE DIES FROM 2 ARROWS WHEN IVE JUMPED OFF FOOKIN MOUNTAINS WITH HIM AND HES GOTTEN UP FINE No need for Medicines or Rest JUST Gets Up Runs me to whereever EVEN While Getting Slashed Hit with Flaming or explosive arrows etc BUT 2 Arrows WITHOUT POISONS Get him when the NO NAME Replacement horse Ive got STILL Lives getting hit by my Poisons that KIll everyone and disable Jin?
      aghh I need to calm down and Decide Which Horse AFTER Finding out FOR SURE that Deluxe Edition Horse is JUST that one Colour because Otherwise Id Have used and named different horses differently and with different names you know???
      But I bet more than half the people not expecting our horse to get merced by Uncle's men PROBABLY Felt somewhat Similarly....
      Man Now I wanna learn some Iaido..... when I order Either Shusui or Enma on the internet and get it THEN I'll begin training some Iaido stuff after the basic Kendo is known enough...
      Anyone else Ever wonder how the hell so many characters with amazing Iai skills do Such Immensely Powerful ONE SLASH Kill Attacks and RESHEATH and in an Anime the Blade is in the Scabbard their some Colourful Movement and a Head Flying and the Swords ALREADY Back in the scabbard you know?
      Id Be TERRIFIED to Attempt Slashing and Returning the blade to the sheathe at such speed cause ONE thing throwing off movement and Im stabbing my hand or breaking the sword scabbard or something... Maybe I shouldnt order a cheap anime imitation katana to practice Iaido......
      (someone irritated by a part of my comment or that its longer than Twitter allows Is gonna tell me I should do it anyway and lose hands anyway EVEN THOUGH Im probably meant to lose limbs anyway thanks to the SuperDiabeetus from the Bad MMRVax from 19 years ago to be allowed to go to highschool which I think also changed how my brain operated and helped shut down my endocrine function but not like Im gonna say that 5HT2a agonists could be used to better treat AT LEAST Type 2 Diabetes or general Insulin Resistance etc. just becase it helped me lose weigh regain ability to see certain colours from self training and other stuff to do with neuropsychopharmacology and trying to Not Die, since I, LIKE MOST, am not keen on the Drug Companies murdering me thing but THEY Kinda ALREADY SoftKilled me so what does it matter when theyre already dropping new bioweaponised viral whatevers on the world so it feels like Human Civilisation has Already lost to a functionally "Internazi World Government" being run from people conspiring as Globalists to Abuse the powers of UNWHO, but man I wonder How long anyone will even be allowed to read any of this hehehe Man "Fook the world government!" man... Seriously... They're like Mongolians on Tsushima Except using more Advanced Tech and PsyOps style means and biowarfare etc.... and Now EVERYTHING SUCKS Besides a FEW Manga basically.... and Even with manga Sales are down cause of how most Printed Literature is now Forced to only be digital and so on... Now I've said too much... Excuse me...)
      And it does Feel cold to the Replacement Horse cause why couldnt I just Call them to me and Tell her "This Horse, its Learnt a lot since you lent him to me... Thank you, I'll Keep em..." or IS that The Black horse with a better Saddle now? AGH... and Why Does Deluxe Horse Look the SAME as the Last one I had?? Just a Knockoff of My Kage...

I'm not a martial expert, but I understand that the environment also affects how well someone fight, as well as their experience and physical merits. If you are able to fight normally on ground that is just a bunch of tiny rocks, then you got an (maybe) extremely good sense of balance. And I have always found the old sword technique of japan to be a flourish of art while also showing the calm show of the mind as if nothing will distract from the flow. Very unlike where I was raised, where it mostly was a show of power and to overpower opponents though a more brutish and less refined but still shows a sense of primal pride and courage.

    When Toru Uchikado recreates the running slash at 9:12 it highlights something I find really interesting about game animations and physics. It's something I always look for but rarely actually catch (unless I watch really close,) and that's by the developer's design.
    Very often game devs will do some really weird and totally unnatural stuff with body physics to make things look more realistic, which is totally counterintuitive but it totally works. In this case it's a mild example, just exaggerating Sakai's movements to make the running look better, but in other games they straight up violate the capability of character's joints, bones, or the flexibility/movement capability of a character's body or body parts to make things look MORE natural... On this more extreme end it's called a "smear." I think Polygon did a video about it. "How devs break bones to make animation feel right." Super interesting.
    The "smears" at the extreme end of this sort of "exaggeration spectrum," I guess, are really extreme but still surprisingly hard to catch at times, unless you're looking for them. Polygon did some freeze frames of classic cartoons and video games and it looks almost like some kind of appalling body horror at times lol. Smears are a technique that go back to classic cartoons from the 50's and laye 40's even, when they were popularized by the _legendary_ animator Chuck Jones, who's best known for his work with Warner Bros. Cartoons including the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of shorts.
    I just love how this all works. We don't notice how exaggerated certain movements are until we see an actual person try to do it. Somehow the exaggeration by a chatacter can tend to slip right past our perceptive filters so much of the time. Very interesting. Brilliant animation tricks at play.

    Wow! Awesome video!
    I have studied sword skills including taiji sword. In the short form (Kata) we indeed use the blade “sideways” so, yes, it can penetrate the chest cavity in between the ribs. The taiji sword is very thin and if wielded in a sloppy manner is wobbly at the tip. However, we practice to make that tip firm with technique. It is a very good and satisfying practice. It is extending the feel of your hand to the tip of your sword. Once you get this, you will never put down your sword again because it then becomes alive in your hands. Your video is very cool! And your skills are awesome. Thank you!
