everyone in the comments is forgetting the winds were 45° and the ride should have only been operating in 34° winds. they KNEW this and reopened the ride after continuous errors that day. this was a human error and a very unfortunate accident.
Thank you
A proper rollercoaster not being safe is like midbender when the wheel axles weren't in and it derailed that was preventable by the staff but this accident was and if they hadn't opened it it would have never happened but with something like mind bender it was a matter of time
Yeah, they decided to open the ride because there were a lot of people at the park. Regardless of how many people there are the theme park cant take the safety of the visitors in their own hands.
They do it for the money.
Yes I watched the footage up to the point of the accident. Yet another reason why humans shouldn't be trusted
There were so so SO many warnings that something was going to happen, the errors were persistent, and when there was something detected on the track (this happened on incline 1) it would have taken ten mins max to run down to the viewing area and check that there was nothing on the track. If there had been weighted sandbags on the test, the collision would have been even worse than it was, and if there was something small on the tracks (think: injured bird, a hat, small trinket) that could have derailed the whole thing! Not only was there so little communication that a whole CART could go missing, the amount of warnings that were ignored would have been enough to alarm most people.
Some commenters are so ignorant. There's nothing mechanically wrong with the ride or its computer system. The system registered that the empty car had stalled and the car with riders in was halted at the top of the lift section as it should have been. The track is designed with five block sections so that up to five cars can traverse the track at once. What happened was that an engineer and operator manually overrode the safety mechanism which allowed the loaded car to carry on down the track. How do I know? I worked for Merlin... oh and also I can read the facts, instead of just throwing around stupid accusations.
Agreed. It was human error. The system stopped the car with riders on the first lift, an operator overrode this and released the car manually leading to the crash. No fault lies with the ride itself on this occasion. One thing though, five block sections and five cars simultaneously? How do you work that one out then? There's no way you could safely operate five cars on that track - three maximum I reckon. One in the station, one in the first section after the first lift, and one in the second section after the second lift. I don't see how you could operate five at the same time safely...
Jay Vaisey i was told that the engineer didn’t know about the 5th cart on the track so they didn’t add the safety mechanism or something so it crashed, because apparently when a cart gets in a certain distance with another it stops.. am i correct here or-
@warallthetime sophie is right. They didn't know they put a fifth train on the track, so they assumed it was just the ride glitching.

EVERYONE this ride is completely safe, I heard about this crash, heard a girl had to get her leg amputated, saw the crash on the cameras, I still went on it. Had a blast, had my arms in the air, I was thinking of the crash, but it didn’t even bother me, Because this ride is hugely in safety zone now, just a tiny bit of debris and this ride will come to a stop, it has loads of senses on the coaster track, don’t be fooled by the crash, because this ride is extremely secure now. The crash was human error, not the roller coaster.
Hamzahshyper if you lose a limb, you can get it amputated, which is like that limb getting replaced.
I can’t imagine how traumatic this must of been
Yes sadly people were physically maimed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the survivors. We hope that Vicki, Leah, Joe and Daniel make a speedy recovery as theses people where in front. this video is very misleading plus you didn't show the crash u shown some one else's video of the cash going up and down. All that was yours is the video of you on the ride.
Misleading? "The smiler pov taken prior to the tragic june 2015 crash" "Shows point of crash location" " note LOCATION, possible explanation" i never said shows crash or in explicit detail. It shows views of what the poor victims may have seen ie riding the ride then and what happened and where into the ride as i stated.
Finally I have a reason to say why I find it interesting to watch videos like this - not because of the gore, but the facts.

Edit 25/04/2020 - Due to whiny ass people commenting on my 4 year old post imma post an explanation of how and why the smiler accident happened right here in this update.
So, the reason all this started on June 2nd 2015, the event that would set course for the accident on that day was actually because of the winds of the carriages themselves. The recommended winds is 34mph, while the smiler was operating at 46mph. Because of this an alert was issued to indicate a fault with the ride, so passengers were promptly taken off the ride. While the smiler was out of usage for visors a 5th carriage was being added in the midst. The reasoning for this was because of the amount of visitors in the park and how popular Smiler were around that time. Aka the ride was in high demand. So they went forth with adding another train, despite the smiler prior being built to 4 carriages [duh]. This is important to why the accident occurred. While this was happening an empty carriage was sent around the smiler but failed to return. This is when miscommunication set the lines for the tragic accident, as staff was unaware a 5th train was added. The empty train that failed to return, returned, thanks to electrical engineers. So things went as usual. After that preparing visitors ANOTHER empty train was sent out, that train failed to return. This empty train failing to make the loop rested in the valley area of the Smiler. Staff were not aware of this but despite that the ride was then handled to an operator, allowing passengers to board the ride. The first car full of passengers was sent around the track, Though as it climbed the first incline the carriage stopped. The ride's computer system stopped the train, indicating that a part of the track was occupied. One engineer was STILL not aware that there were 5 trains on the tracks, he identified the 4 trains not realising the 5th was still on the tracks. A lot of pressure to start the ride again. Thinking it was safe, an engineer pressed a button to start it again, overruling the safety warnings. Sending the carriage full of passengers straight towards the empty train ahead. That was why and how the accident occurred.
The smiler did glitch but it was mainly human error. Why send a carriage full of 16 people when the other carriage didnt return? They KNEW it was having errors and had to test the ride ALL day until the crash. Why did they just send it when they knew it was having Errors.
Not just that Alton Towers has become a joke. There rides are fantastic yet there newer rides clearly need checking and fixing properly. They have to now becuase I bet you they were doing it to save money, but after this they will want NO more risks like this. A poor teen lost her leg becuase of human error and not building this ride properly.
Its a shame to to those people and the ride itself becuase the ride itself is amazing. Such a tragic thing that accident.
+TheMMDplayer OoO You clearly know more about the theme park industry than the safest theme park in the UK. Maybe you should teach them your ways since you're so clued up on everything. /sarcasm. Moron.

+TheMMDplayer OoO there are always 2 carriages running at a time to allow more people on. On Sonic Spin Ball they have 4 carriages running at a time.
and the ride wasn’t even running properly before they opened it publicly why tf would you open it that day my god
wait what
The maintenance didn’t care.
It wasn’t the ride, it was human error
It was a windy day and the smiler isn’t meant to operate in high winds but the park let it operate so they sent a test car out my make sure everything was okay, the test failed but the engineers didn’t tell the operators it was stalled so the operators sent out another car and the car crashed
Fun fact i was on that ride the day before the crash
Crazy shit
it was human error
It wasn't because the mechanism didn't work and they're finding out why it didn't work
+mining maniac Then someone is clearly lying.
A mechanic overrode the system to let out another carriage but soon realized his mistake
thealphawolf42069 you are very wrong
mining maniac that's not how rollercoaster coasters work I don't know all that to much but the way it works is that two carriages have to be present at the entrance and then the person at the bottom gives a thumbs up or a yell to the person at the control room to say it's ready for the people to get on and have there seatbelts on. What happened is that the person said it was ready to go on and the other Person at control started the ride then the carriage with people hit the empty testing one. The testing carriage was stopped due to the fact that someone didn't do one of the harnesses properly it stopped for safety reasons. To make a long story short the entire thing happened due to workers being lazy
Guys the ride is completely safe. This tragic accident was caused by way of human error, and even now there are plenty of new safety features on the ride.

It was a human and natural error...the testing train stalled and one of the operators sent a full loaded train round without even realizing (new employee) and crashed

+Isaac Gamez no, they sent fount an empty carriage, forgot, and then sent round another one after the empty one had hibernate given an emergency stop

They shouldn't have sent that cart out at all...glad no one died and that nothing like this has happened since
As the description said, if just a test cart with no weight of any amount of people didn't even come back, why send out a cart WITH the weight of about 16 or so people? I'm sure the weight tied into the whole thing too
The problem is that if a train is stalled on a track, the coaster systems are supposed to send out a warning. This would stop the other trains from going up the hill and the brakes will apply. The Smiler had malfunctions before this and the systems were malfunctioned
+Michae Butler The operators of the ride over-ride those warnings and sent people out anyways. The system was having problems, yes, but the people running it were the people who caused it.
some body told them there was a cart still on the tracks and they still let it go
a empty carriage can still run throgh the track

Thank you for the nice responses. my video is not a sordid gruesome video, its to show how far into the ride and some info people outside the UK might not know.

I still remember hearing the news, a friend of mine was there and I was hoping to god he wasn't on it at the time. Luckily he hadn't gone on the Smiler, he said he might but opted out. It just doesn't seem like 3 1/2 years ago now
Lucky he didnt go on then
To the people who want to go on it but are scared, don't worry it has been ages since it happened and they have fixed it
Fixed what?
@@slottyslot the crash wasnt caused by human error the second carriage was stopped at the top of the first hill to stop the accident but then the first test carriage had a wheel malfunction causing the carriage to come to a halt then because after you get past the first big hill the rest is wheel and gravity powered meaning they have no control to emergency stop the ride they have since added brakes to the mechanical parts of the wheels meaning nothing like this will ever happen again
Oh. Thank god! Now i feel more safer
lilmaca it was caused by human error because the train was stopped by the ride system and because the ride ops couldn’t see anything at the inversion so they overrode the system warning which sent the full train up the lift hill which caused the accident
@@riley.48 ik I just watched gp to enthusiasts video now I feel like an idiot 😪
Explained:
They did a test run earlier that day and the cart couldn't finish the circuit. The operator was drunk and didn't replace the cart and get it off the tracks
Later that day people were queuing for the ride when another cart came into collision with that one still on the tracks. Emergency brakes were not inforced meaning they collided.
The winds were 44° and the ride should be running at 34° MAXIMUM. The drunk operator was not looking at what he was doing thus causing the accident. Human error can be shocking 😔
The silver lining to this horrific accident is the extreme hardening of IROC training. I am a ride operator at cedar fair’s “worlds of fun” and they discipline us pretty hard. Even someone as small as a poor scan is enough to get in trouble. I can’t say the same for six flags, they don’t have iroc so I wouldn’t recommend going to any of their parks
I don't get what's happening in the video can someone tell me? because I'm lost
Ur not alone man
A crash happned there was human error so the cart kept going back and forth but other empty carts were still moving very fast later on it crashed into the other cart
czcams.com/video/8DolzxUPBjE/video.html
they sent a test carriage out with no people and then that one didn’t come back it was was stuck. The worker stupidly let a carriage of people(who i’m sure were willing to live) out. The empty carriage was stuck on a corner and the carriage with people collided into them at full speed leaving people with life changing injuries. 😭
syndiote_ mv They sent out a cart to be test ridden (Maybe because it had a problem and they were just being sure) It went on the track and unfortunately it failed to go over a loop. So it came right back down, it took 2 minutes! To come to a full stop. Stupidly the operator thought it had came back and sent the other cart full of people onto the ride. And the riders in the cart hit right behind the empty cart, with a huge boom and everyone screaming, the operator never heard anything and just left them with the poor woman in front with a damaged leg that had to sadly be amputated afterwards.
Why am I watching this? I'm going on the smiler tommorow 😱😧😥

i read the description.
the reason the sent a full one when the 'test' didn't return is because the 'test' one was added while the ride was down and the person or persons that sent the full one was unaware of the extra. they override the safety that had stopped the full one because as far as they knew there was not one on the track and they knew the positions of the ones they were aware were operating.
People say that smiler is still unsafe to this day but it’s actually one of the safest if not, the safest ride on the planet, they have prevented the ability to hijack the chainlifts without permission from the main team of merlin themselves. The block brake sections placed at the starts of chainlifts 1 and 2 have been modified massively to be a 2 person operation system (a lot like nemesis.) the smiler may be rough sometimes, or mabye a couple bruises caused but in my opinion, it’s the best ride out there. Smile always
@ 1:54, you can see the rear of the car that they crashed into, and you can see why the 2 girls lost one of their legs, the opposite on each, as they were seated in the center seats. It was a tragic thing that happened to them all, grateful that they are all alive. I hope that those who have this inability to believe anything unless it happens to them, never have to face anything such as this. I feel only pity for the people squawking to get attention. I feel admiration for those who have overcome and persevere through such traumas. They have rightfully been compensated, but more than that, they have most all raised so much for first responders, among other charities-and again, I hope you people who are trying to get a raise out of everyone who supports the victims, never have to be attended to by any paramedic, first responder, trauma surgeon, air ambulance, etc. I hope no one does, but in light of the fact that accidents DO happen, I'm applaud the work that they all did that day at AT, and all who do it every day-regardless of whether you believe they actually did/do it.

when i heard of the news i was thinking omg that is too sad injured people😞

They should of closed it if they knew it had errors!
It was a human error and miscommunication, not the fault of the ride.
It was human error. There was a train that stalled on the track. This was because the winds were high and nobody was in the train. The ride's safety system stopped the train behind it. Not realizing there was a stuck train, the operators overruled the safety system. Forcefully starting the train again, it went down and eventually hit the empty train.
😑😑😑

John Norris U should go back! Smiler isn’t like it used to be don’t worry, it has plenty of sensors on the track, once the ride stopped NOT BECAUSE OF A PROBLEM because something like Debris or a phone came right onto the tracks, and set the sensors off, for your own safety. I heard about all these crashes and watched the crash the day before I was gonna go Alton towers, didn’t care the slightest still had a blast on plenty of these rides and went on the Smiler soooo many times. Not one bad thing happened, so just ignore the crash The ride really isn’t that bad, Human error really doesn’t happen there anymore.
yes it is scary what human error can do. but you should look at the safety statistics for rollercoasters. they are actually incredibly safe. and (although it is sad that they happen) accidents will make rides safer as new rules are put in place to stop it happening again.
Yes but I think if it ever happens again the park would be closed I’ve Been on it 4 times since and VERY safe you should go !
this ride creepy as hell , who gets on something called smiler ?! and the logo even worse look like a damn julia roberts on steroids
The reason why they sent another one on was because the carriages had a mechanism where if one carriage gets too close to another, it stops and makes the one in front go forward
Basically the park did an oopsie and let people on the ride when there was a clear malfunction. There was a testing car still on the tracks and it was stuck at the bottom of a loop. When the other car came to that point they collided. 50km/h (31mph) to a sudden stop (then started swinging back and forth as the emergency breaks were ironically broken)
Next time I go to alton towers this is the first ride I'm going on. I never actually got to go on it since it was closed and waiting for some parts.

Nah but just watching it gived me a bad gut feeling.. I can't 3gen begin ti imagine what they felt that day...

As the title states its the location of the crash
You must be a real plonker to let a ride go on even though it had technical difficulties earlier
If they didn't open rides that had technical difficulties, no ride would ever be open. If they are satisfied that a ride is no longer malfunctioning then they will reopen it. In this case, the engineer had not been made aware that the fifth train had been loaded onto the track by the operators. They therefore thought that there were only four in operation, three in the station and one stopped at the top of the lift hill. This led to the engineer overriding the warnings thinking it was an error.
The screams of pain oh my god
The fact is, I would have been on that ride if it wasn’t for the perosn in front of me
You are very lucky, life can be cruel and also giving thankfully it gave to you.
Simple as this, if they didnt want it to crash, they shouldnt of let the other cart go
The crash happened due to a communication error people weren’t informed that there was a fifth car in the track they were also running the ride Wind wind speeds were above the suggested speed
This a case of extremely poor management, to let the car go when the test car was stopped requires no brain at all
The engineer thought there were only 4 trains in track, not 5, so overrode the warning, not realising there was a train out there. The operators hadn't told the engineer they'd put a fifth train on track.

Why? She never has to work again. Now believe me, I'm not one of those people who would say 'I'd rather lose my leg and have over a million pounds' because I wouldn't! However her life is definitely not over. I know people, many people who are worse off then her, people who are completely disabled both physically and/or mentally and either struggle to find work or can't and have to live off of the system or family.
um could it be because she just lost her leg in an accident? No its fine now she doesn't have to work , it's not like there are restaurants that she could work at or engineering or anything that doesn't involve heavy machinery

And after that a wheel came off hitting 2 passengers on the head
How could you be trained for a ride that’s most definitely dangerous and should’ve been watched at every second. I watched a video that said the sent a fifth cart to test, it failed but they didn’t check for it. The ride system stopped them, the engineer they sent out wasn’t told there was a fifth cart. He didn’t count it.

My question is why would they let a cart full of people go without the empty one returning? Where did the operators of the ride think it went?
they forgot it was there.
There was a failure in communication to the ride operator about a 5th cart being added on the track and the operator thought there was only 4 carts on the track mistaking the fault/alert light as a glitch on the control panel which was why he overrode the safety mechanism that had made the cart with people in it stop due to the ride detecting a part of the track was occupied not knowing there was an added cart stuck on the track

At the 1:32 mark it sounds like people are panicking. What's happening there. Was this a failure before the crash?
what happened was that carrige I believe didn't have enough momentum to keep going so getting stuck there was actually a common problem. on the actual crash day they sent a test out, it got stuck there you see in the video, after they sent the live one without checking the track was clear.
No that was footage of the crash the trains never had 8 rows and the ones the people are in is the 5th-8th
@@RG7621 that was the actual footage of the crash
I feel sorry for the girl who lost her leg😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭 FUCKING RIDE CLOSE DOWN😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
Poor people who were at the front seats :'(
Cookies and cream The 2 girls in the front seat had to have one of their legs amputated.
There was faults with the ride. They closed it and sent out a fifth cart as a test cart. The engineers didn’t know that their was a fifth cart out. Even when there warnings from the ride tracking (I think), since nobody told them about it, they presumed it was fine. But the test cart couldn’t even make a loop. The wind was way to high for the ride. It was 45° (I think it was around that.) when they said it shouldn’t run around 34°. Then they sent out the new cart with the people in the crash. It obviously experienced errors, but it crashed with the other cart. Making people get injured.
They never show the actual crash ??
Nobody was filming when it happened. You can get security camera footage of the crash but I would advise not as it is very disturbing
@@lemonmoth. Yes it is incredibly disturbing. I used to work as a ride emergency engineer, e.g. emergency power and general issues on rides. I quit the week after the accident. I couldn't handle being in the place where reoccurring nightmares were set in my mind. I remember when I arrived at Smiler a few minutes after it happened. It was horrific. The worst thing I remember is when it was cleared up, and the trains were moved out the way. There was a puddle of blood on the concrete, along with pieces of metal removed in the rescue efforts.
What people don't realize is that it was horrific for the guests onboard, of course it was, but nobody talks about the staff dealing with it. We didnt get any compensation for what we saw, we got a single day off. No million pound payout, no interviews on TV chat shows a year after. Just ignored and told to come back to work the following week.
The scenes are what caused years of traumatic dreams and still ongoing therapy.
@@lemonmoth. It was so traumatic it is likely I will never go on a roller coaster again, and I have to pretend daddy doesn't want to go on the ride because he doesn't like heights. I can't bring myself to tell my children the truth. I don't want to scare them into missing out on theme parks.
@@lemonmoth. Yea, everyone makes the same mistake when they are thinking about joining the queue, they try and look where it happened. That is just gonna terrify you. Just get in the queue, paying no attention to the tracks, then you should be fine.
@@lemonmoth. wow good job enjoying it, in my time at the park I saw thousands of grown adults leaving the queue because they got scared. And I totally agree with your opinion. It's an amazing ride, but many people, including myself, stay away from it, and that's ok.
The worst part is that the music for the smiler was pretty much mocking the victims, because it’s laughing manically.
that is very true :(
I am one of the emergency services personnel that attended, only one person had their leg amputated, definitely nobody died but it could have been much worse!
Thank you for all you did at this time of crisis.
Thank you, I have seen a heck of a lot in my three jobs and this is the only incident that I have ever struggled with!
@@jakedovey7488 We are so sorry to hear that. Especially at a fun park.
How did the people hurt themself?
I actually want to go on it but I'm struggling to find a live video of the crash....
+Anais then you were obviously riding it wrong
+James Norman tHANK YOU jesus, i tell that to everyone who finds arrows or older(better) b&m's rough. Rides are so forceless these days from the majorly soft and bitchy populous.
I’m glad no one died.
Other than the poor animals. so far 180+ explores and no dead humans
When did the crash happen?
2015
I was at the back of the carriage shouting stop but they didn’t listen so I smashed my head in the seat in front of me and I was rushed to a ambulance
I hope you are ok now.
No you weren't
This was a crash that the staff caused by not listening to a man telling them that there was a car stuck in the track. They normally have 2 cars on the track at the same time it could have been that the car that stopped needed more oil on the wheels and track side runners
Another vid said it was a malfunction in the cart that made it stop at the bottom of a loop sad
THE SMILER?? I bet those injured people on it was NOT smiling when they crashed! Heck they were in pain! The operators were NOT smiling when they got fired! Neither were the engineers! They should rename this the agonizer OR the torture frowner. I never heard of this ride. this happened years ago? Why am I JUST NOW discovering this??
unsure as it was big news, been a lot of ride accidents too especially on pendulum rides. we have a few on our other youtube channel. its this mental fear of accidents and death that people strive to feel why they ride them in the first place.
@@Scaryscooby Thanks. This is the only news I never heard about. But other accidents yep. I will check out more of your channel & binge watch. I may discover more! Thanks for sharing!
@@tinnybird1971 czcams.com/channels/iyKCcFQxscToZPOIWNupPA.html is our other channel. we have mindbender (roller coaster) on there as a tribute to the people that died. plus 2 pendulum crashes :(
I found out about this ride 1-2 months ago
The fact that the people in front of the cart litterly lost their legs cause of the other cart the bars in front pushed their legs of their bodies and they were screaming and crying and paniching
