Reasons why the fart joke is funny:
1: Only thing in this movie that actually feels like a joke
2: The villain's dramatic scenes being ruined
3: Only non-offensive joke attempt
I love the long pause afterwards, added to the humor.

I saw this movie in the theater when I was 10. I barely laughed. When even a stupid 10 year old thinks your movie sucks you have completely shat the bed.
I was 11. Never saw it until today. But I always remember my 17 year old brother coming from the theatre and telling me about the jokes. He found it funny and I always thought he was so lame for that. 18 years later I still think he's lame for finding this funny at any age.
I found it funny at 11. Even had the DVD. But I was a late bloomer when it came to taste.
Honestly, I think the premise is fine for a fantasy comedy. It just needs a remake that throws out just about everything OTHER than the premise.
I saw the trailer for this when I was 7, and even then I thought “What the, that was the dumbest thing I had ever seen.” I WAS 7 YEARS OLD!
I was 6 and being the dumb 6 year old I was, thought the trailer looked funny. But even my dumb 6 year old ass was disappointed when I actually saw the movie.
Same with me! The opening credits and the skit where pistachio and his grandfather sing "who,why,when,where,how".
You gotta hand it to Carvey though. He did a great Mitch McConnell impression in this film.

When he was talking about the "fart joke" it reminded me of when I took the theatre in high school, thy actually taught us that a running joke in any play or movie is funny the first time, eye rolling the second, and hilarious the third time. If it's done right that is. Pretty interesting

After the third instance (this is my second time watching the review), I stopped to think about it. I don't believe it's the fact that it happens three times (at that point), I think it's the fact that the comedic timing is spot on the first and third time and bad the second, fourth and last times (where it's really predictable and seems forced).

Yeah! It's the rule of 3s! It's a well known comedy effect. But You bring something up once to set it up twice to establish a pattern and then the 3rd time has a bigger variable. It's interesting stuff
kataddy Funny, that exact format was used with Rachel in this video. With each attempt at murder getting more ridiculous and oddly specific. Funny how a dude with a small team of writers can do a better job at comedy than a major studio.

I have one and only one defense for this movie and that's that when I was a kid with Asperger's and didn't know it, I had a terrible habit/coping mechanism of starting to imitate the people around me. This movie was when I saw someone afflicted in the same way, and it became his superpower. So I saw that if I got control of it, I could become an impressionist and even become funny and endearing to people.

When Brent Spiner came to Ottawa Comic Con this past year, I really really _really_ wanted to bring in a DVD copy of this to get him to sign. Just to either hear his thoughts on it, see a disgusted look...I dunno. But then I remembered he'd have that look/feeling pretty much all day from the Trek fans, so I brought in Out To Sea instead. He's said in interviews it was his favourite project he's ever worked on (and said the same to me when I slid my DVD copy of it across the table to him). Totally worth it. 10-15 minutes of him reminiscing about working with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon was so much more satisfying than irking him.
I did the same thing with Warwick Davis. He was doing a con and everyone was bringing him Star Wars, Harry Potter or Willow. I turned up with Skinned Deep, the weird horror movie where he threw plates. I think sometimes they just like to have that change from the usual stuff they get!

The only good thing about Master of Disguise is after I saw it in the theaters, I went to my friend's house and played the Gamecube remake of Resident Evil 1 for the first time. So that's a nice memory I associate with the movie.

Well, its okay to add bloopers and stuff in the credits, even to draw out the credits.
The issue is when you stop the credit roll to add basically another scene. I mean, I can't get an example from memory directly, but I know for a fact I have seen movies that added blooper reels/deleted scenes to the credits while also still rolling the credits.

I like how we just breeze past the fact that our protagonist bites a man's nose clean off, spits it back onto his face where it magically reattaches, and the party mostly continues as if nothing happened. All while a mentally deranged man in a turtle costume walks around escorted by a woman who should be in a much better movie.

...strange that I'm defending a decision in this movie, but I just realized. According to their rules:
"If a father and mother are missing, only a son who has become a Master of Disguise can save them without any direct help from the Grandfather."
Pistachio ain't a Master of Disguise when he's reading that book, so he's allowed the direct help from his grandfather. I could be wrong and who really cares, but figured I'd throw it out there.
...That makes a disturbing amount of sense.

I'd have loved if the villain had hypnotized the dad, then the dad (believing he was the villain) knocked out the real villain and left him in the chair. Thus pisstachio would have been working endlessly trying to figure out how to fix his dad, when his dad was out there being the villain.

I love this review. I keep coming back to it every so often. Critic inadvertently made the movie funnier by adding what it needed in the first place: the straight guy who gets pissed at all of Dana Carvey's antics. That's why Pink Panther works and Spongebob too. Without a Squidward, Spongebob would not be funny.
That's exactly it, there's not enough "straight man" in this. That's the big, counter-intuitive secret to comedy.
I think the turtle scene could have been funny if someone told him off early on and he spends the rest of his time trying to act normal.

I guess the NC really liked the “little wiener and tiny nuts” joke. He was laughing so hard he lost his shit. It wasn’t that funny... I usually only have to bludgeon a single person after that scene. Three is a little excessive.

I saw this movie once when I was in first grade, at a friend's house. The second time I saw it was in high school, in Spanish this time. I was utterly befuddled by the end of it. However, I will admit, some of the scenes in this review still got a chuckle out of me.
I saw this when it came out. Not a single laugh in the entire packed theater. Just lots of restless kids asking to leave.
It was fucking agony.
mdudegamer if you can believe me, I watched this on repeat as a kid. Had it on VHS and would literally watch it multiple times a day. To the point of being able to recite every line XD

I remember seeing this as a kid too and literally only laughing at the fart joke lmao. Otherwise I thought it was really weird.

For what it's worth, my analysis of the fart joke:
1st time: (Generally speaking) pretty unexpected
2nd time: Basically an exact repeat of the first time: you're expecting it, the surprise is totally lost
3rd time: You expect another repeat, then he stops laughing and you think they just forgot about putting it in or something. Then he starts talking and farts, creating a delayed gratification, aka "TIMING!", aka subversion of expectations, aka humor
4th time: He'd already farted several times in the seconds leading up to the joke, killing any suspense. Also the actor played it up too much
5th time: So much expectation has been built up (by that joke being the villain's only character trait) that's it's impossible for it to be funny anymore. And again, the Carvey and the others play it up too much. "Look! He farted! Just like all the other times! Isn't that such a great and clever joke we did for the entirety of the movie?" It would have been better if they paused for a second and somebody said, "Yep, he's dead" or something to that effect.

You know, out of all of Doug Walker's videos this is probably the most useful comedically speaking. He really dissected how bad this film was piece by piece, which is extremely useful for comedians.
As an Italian, I would like to add that their speech about her having a "little bottom" was not only riddled with grammar errors, but also extremely crass and rude. They didn't poke fun at her small but, they practically bodyshamed her. Not funny at all.
Yeah. I really hate how they treat her with the casual objectification like she's not even there. It made the "romance" between then extremely gross and cringey. Nevermind our "Hero" is so depraved he the villain very nearly "defeats" him with a posse of big-assed women...
And then there's the scene that implies she'll eat italian food so she can his Pistachio's ideal woman body type..
I'm not one to get offended by a movie's comedy but this movie really makes me hate its protagonist with how he is so obsessed with big-assed women, values the love interest as a sex object (to the extent he nearly disqualifies her for having a small bum) and ultimetely gets his way...
Fuck this movie.
