When you are sober you say "Snaps" in Sweden, when you had a few you say "Schnaps" or maybe "Schna-ha*hic*aaaps". It all depends on your state and how late in the afternoon. ;)

It’s important to point out that snaps and schnapps are two different things. Wikipedia has two articles, ome for each. Snaps is the Swedish/Danish one, usually an aqvavit. O.P. Anderson is one of the most popular ones.

The Maypole is not used for "poledancing" and the shape of the maypole has its origin very far back. We don't intentionally celebrate midsommar as a fertility feast anymore, but statistically, there is a peak in births in march, compared to the months around it.

You did good drinking the whole snaps! 😀 That is actually what the song "Helan går" means. It translates to "if you don't drink it all, then you don't get half of it either", so basically drink everything or not at all. 😁

Nearly, but not quite. The first shot is called "Helan", the second "Halvan". If you don't drink the first, then of course you cannot drink the second either. (I could list the names of the first 15 shots, though I have never had that many - I would probably have passed out long before that! 🙂)

Hello, Kim! Thank you once again for an interesting episode! Being an old Swede (and actually living in Malmö!), I find it fascinating to get "outside views" on who we are and what we do.
Midsommer(-s Eve, actually) is probably the most genuinely Swedish holiday we have, and probably should be counted as an unofficial Swedish national day.
Europe is interesting though - we live on a continent where people have intermingled and mixed for thousands of years, and what today is typically Swedish is actually a combination of influences.
The maypole, for instance, originally comes from Germany.
And the song you mentioned, "Små grodorna", or the little frogs, where you hop around the maypole and behave ridiculously (!) is originally a French folk song.
And this is how you find Europe just about everywhere, but it's the COMBINATION of influences that in the end becomes "unique", in this case as a Swedish tradition.
And presumably, you didn't forget to put seven different flowers under your pillow when going to bed after the partying? 😎

The midsummer pole is altso cald "Majstång"/"maypole", frome "maja" that means to ornate with green leafs.
Midsummer eve is magical.. if one pick seven flowers and put under ones pillow one suposed to dream about the one that one going to get married to!
An modern update.. if one dreams about the wrong person.. one have probably picked the wrong flowers.. a new try next year!

    Greetings from Finland once again!
Nice to see that you still do videos. So here in Finland we celebrate midsommar too, but we call the day "Juhannus". It is the last saturday of june as we have it. Cultural difference is huge if we compair to Sweden. At juhannus people gather together with friends or families and usually goes to summer cabin or some festivals that are all over the country. Some areas also have "juhannuskokko" that is massive bonfire and people gather there to celebrate. There is little bit different traditions depending what area you live.
But anyway juhannussauna is very traditional in whole country. Sauna is always important in finnish celebretions and allmost everyone goes to sauna at juhannus. Second thing is that most of the people grill them food at juhannus. You can basicly anything but sausages are the most common thing to grill. Many people also smokes salmon at juhannus. Of course we eat sallads, fresh and potato sallad are the most common. Also new potatoes is big part of the juhannus food.
Drinking alots of beer or/and vodka is very common too. Some fancier people propably drink wine, but most of the people drinks hell of alot beer.
Then there is many kinds of "weird" beliefs and some spiritual things that people do. If young woman gathers seven different flowers from the field and puts those under her pillow, she might see a dream from her upcoming fiance (this is very old habbit). Those bonfires that i told earlier is for the reason too keep bad spirits away and to get good crops to harwest in late summer / early fall.
If the wether is good, people do many kinds of outside activities. Throwing darts, playing mölkky or some other outdoor games. If you are at cabbin that has lake next to it or the cabbin is on by the or in island there is lots of swimming too. First we heat up saunas and go to sauna and then we go for a swim. Sauna will be heated for whole evening as long as people are up unless everybody thinks that they are not going to sauna anymore. Some people might sit in sauna for hours and cool of once in a while in water or terrace. If you don´t have lake, river or sea at your cottage, people might bath in palju. Its little bit had to explain, but is something like a jacuzzi/bathing barrel. Here is video what it looks like czcams.com/video/OPICdKT1z4Y/video.html if you are interested to see.
Later evening people make campfires or ignite grills for sausages. Then we basicly socialize with other people and drink as long as possible. That might go all night long and some are still drinkin early at morning before they are ready to pass out. Like i earlier wrote we really drink alot of beer. Some might drink whole 24-pack or even more during the day and night and many people buys more than one 24-pack for Juhannus. Usually at least two that you wont run out of beer by acident 😂.
Well that´s about the main things about finnish Juhannus. Having fun outdoors whole day drinking heavy and eating well.
One more interestin fact is that babie are born 9 months after Juhannus more then any other time in the year. So you can guess what else happens alot at Juhannus 😄.

There are diffrent ways to read and disect the maypole, what it's diffrent part means.
Like the rings are the sun and the moon.
On some you got a "David Star" on the center but they are what Dan Brown, in his books, called signs of the male and the female coming together.
Some say the dancing in a ring is to turn the wheel of life and death.
So the whole pole is a sign of new life begining and old life ending.
Not just the funny sexpole as some call it....
