I know this is 7 years late, but my friend thanks you for this video. It just saved him a ton of money on his Prius. His MFD was 'rebooting' and flashing nonstop. Turned out his 12v battery was failing (the display needs over 11.6v to run.) The stealership wanted almost $1600 to replace the battery and the display. This video saved him $1400.

I folded down my back seats and just threw everything from the trunk area on top of them, and then put my laptop on them, too. Watched this video and used it step by step to replace the battery. Everything went perfectly, very easy. I really appreciate this video. Thank you.

Thanks for making this video for us newbies. I'd planned to replace the original 12V battery on my 2005 Prius today, but first needed to find out where it was. My Prius has 286K miles on it and I have never had a problem with it. It may not travel at the speed of light, but I look at it as 8 years without a car payment. Love this car and will buy another one someday (hopefully not too soon).

My 2008 Prius 12v battery died after 12 years. Watched your video and got a new battery. Taking it all apart without the proper tools especially the small pink or red plastic cover over the positive terminal was a challenge but got it in the end. Very clear instructions. And bingo it worked. Well done mate.

10/10 THIS WAS INCREDIBLY HELPFUL. My 12v battery in the back of my 2005 Prius died on me and they were quoting me over $1000 for the service in this video. Obviously it took more than 6 minutes for me and my husband to do it but this video is what got us through! THANK YOU SO MUCH! I’m so grateful! My car turned on after the second time turning it on like he said at the end! Thank you!!!!!

So I fixed my car! Water intrusion had wiped out the 12v battery. I've ended up cutting away the interior soft furnishings over the battery as they were almost rotten. At 16 years old it really doesn't matter what it looks like! Once dry I can fix it back in and the felt can be replaced easily if it is smelly or too rotten . I could see exactly the pathway the water had taken and it had obviously been leaking for a while as there is a tide mark 2" up the battery well. I've used heavy duty outdoor builder's sealant in the cracks I found around the hatch - thanks to some other CZcamsrs for a heads up on their common location! With the soft furnishings out of the way I can see if I've fixed the leak - won't be long - Manchester UK = biblical rain on a regular basis 🙄 It was not an easy job to change the battery but I refused to be beaten by the awkwardness of it's positioning! I can make a wedding dress so I can surely tackle this! Anyway, took it for a spin around and was slightly worried at first - the hybrid battery started at full blue but then dropped to the last blue before it goes red so I headed for our motorway ring road and as I'd hoped I soon got the green lights which stayed for most of the rest of my journey! I think it is safe to say that the hybrid battery is perfectly healthy and the central locking which had failed completely just started back up again! It really is one awesome car! We'd decided to downsize but maybe not just yet 😆 A massive thank you to all the wonderful people who share their skills and help us to be self sufficient in looking after our aged cars and save the environment from all the scrap and the emissions generated by the building of new cars - you are truly awesome!

Love it or hate it the Prius is a successful design. On a trip to Berlin I was picked up by a Prius taxi and sitting in back asked the driver what he thought of it. He had been a taxi driver for over twenty years and had been a big fan of Mercedes until they ‘started building crap’. He said that although the Prius was a complicated hybrid design it had been 100% reliable and was economical and for a self employed taxi driver the Prius left more money in his pocket than the Mercedes ever did.

I had the battery in my '96 Dodge Ram replaced at Sears. I notice they attach a small motorcycle battery before disconnecting the main battery so the computer doesn't lose memory. I know when my battery got really low, the computer would lose memory and it would shift funny or stall when coming to a stop. After a few miles, the computer would re-learn it's parameters and the truck would run fine.

My friends' Prius had "water intrusion" down the hatch, drained into & *FILLED* the battery compartment in 5" of block ice. Shop had to (under my suggestion) pour washer fluid on ice, and park a salamander near by. After chipping & poking around it 1 hour- got the *frozen dead* factory battery out.
I then drilled a 1/4" drain hole underneath the battery compartment- at the "lowest" spot. Never had that problem again.
"Water intrusion from hatch" is a *known inherent problem* that Toyota refuses to address.

The 12v batteries on hybrids are VERY important. The "Hybrid System Check" is run from this battery. So if your 12v batt is low...your system check will go haywire and trigger False warnings and lights. Your starter actually runs from the HV battery, Not the 12v. But I can't even imagine how many unaware owners selling or trading their Hybrid because of "check hybrid system" display lights....when it was JUST a frigging 12v battery, lol.

Mostly that's a good thing, but somehow I'd rather have a 10-15 year old car to work on. I live in the deep south of Pennsylvania so there are more of them surviving down here.

That is not the reason for "... disconnecting negative first/connecting negative last..." as there is virtually guaranteed to be a spark at the terminal. The reason is to avoid spark resulting from touching body ground while tightening the positive with negative/ground already connected.

Can you add a link of the battery you bought? I bought one from o’reileys but it’s too big and won’t fit properly. Also did anyone else have an issue of some water leaks? There was a good amount of water sitting right by my old battery which is super dangerous.

I had that too. Someone higher up in the thread drilled a hole in the bottom of the compartment and said that fixed the problem. I bailed it out and got it dry and replaced the battery, but may do that too.

how to know which battery is not working for prius?

  • @dionkraft6782

Good tutorial except taking the red plastic shield on top of the battery. It has three tabs which secure it. I broke off the top one and then decided I just take off the 12v pos cable and it all comes off after removing tab which secures it on the hold down. Its a secure idea which needs improvement in my opinion in my 40 years as a mechanic.

Does this battery have 12.6 volts like a regular car? How would you know if it's bad?

The Prius battery is not anything unique. test it like any other battery for condition.

Thank you for the instructions. Can you please tell me if the hybrid battery can be damaged in case the car is working with a non-Toyota 12V battery? (A damn mechanic did that to my Prius; he replaced the 12V battery with a non-Toyota Prius 12V battery, and I was driving around with that shit battery for a year and a half. At that time the 12V battery went bad twice! The 1st time he recharged it and said it was ok, so I continued to drive with this non-suitable 12V battery! The 2nd time the 12V battery wouldn't get charged, so he asked Toyota, and only now he figured out that he should had placed a Toyota Prius 12V battery, instead of the one he did!) So now, I am worried this might have affected -in any way- the hybrid battery! Could that have happened? Please let me know if you have any information on this.
(I still haven't gotten the car fixed, to check the hybrid system. Waiting for the proper battery to be deliverd!)
