Signs that your Prius Hybrid Battery is going bad - Updated list

  • So I've made a video in the past of symptoms your bad hybrid battery might show, but it left out a lot of symptoms that I'm now experiencing with my battery pack that is going bad, yet again.
So here is an updated list of some more subtle signs that your hybrid battery may be going bad, that you can use to diagnose your own hybrid battery on your 2nd generation Prius.
Oh - Also one more symptom I forgot to mention is reduced MPG's. When my battery pack was in better condition, I was getting 36ish MPG in town and 45ish MPG on the highway. Now I'm getting about 30 MPG in town and 38 MPG on the highway.
Torque Pro is the app I was using

Good video! I have a 2004 Prius that had the hybrid battery Christmas tree come up. I replaced two of the cells for 45$ off eBay. I replaced them at 192,000 a year ago. The car now has over 220,000 on it and still running strong. I would gladly drop a new battery in it when the time comes. I have never owned a car that is so reliable and that hasn’t cost me tons of $$ to maintain. Riding it until it’s wheels fall off. Love the car.

It was technically fine, but he had some light coming on and when the dealer was like ah no it's ok he was just fuck that replace it now!! So they did :D

You are an absolute hero - I bought my 2007 Prius as a wrecker off a towing guy for 1500 with simple cosmetic damage. The battery has been giving me hell recently and I'm guessing it's because the poor car sat in the dude's lot for a few months without any TLC. Everything that you described; the loud fan, the sluggish movement, the check lights -- IT'S ALL HAPPENING. My grandad is not at all aware of how hybrid cars work, so I'm doing what I can to learn how to fix it myself. I love this video, and I hope maybe I can ask questions later on? Thank you so much for your work!

I had a similar deal with an HID headlamp. Dealer wanted $400 (claimed they had to pull off the entire front end of the car). Toyota of America said, "Pay it and send us the bill." Got a check, pronto. Next time it happened (don't flash lights on and off, and some bad ballasts are out there) I got a bulb from eBay for $50 (it's $125 for same Philips bulb at the dealer) and followed a CZcams video on how to do it in 2 minutes.

It's extremely important for any Prius owner to understand the battery vent, and particularly so for those that own a Prius C. The Prius C doesn't have the vent intake located up high like the regular Prius. The Prius C battery vent intake is located in the forward side of the rear seat bottom on the driver's side. See your owner's manual. It's not in an ideal location as packages and so forth can block the vent. Also, being located near the floor they will pull up dust from dirty carpeting and dog hair. They do vacuum easily without disassembly if the car is kept clean and the vent is vacuumed each time along with the interior. Anyone receiving a battery hot message (or suspect that the car interior was not always kept clean) needs to remove the cover panel along the front side of the seat (just push-in the center of the round pop tabs) and remove just the panel on the driver's side. (there's two panels that at the bottom seat front) Behind the panel is a fiber vent filter and this needs to vacuumed clean to restore proper air flow to cool the battery. To reinstall the round pop tabs, push the center pin outward on the side you see when installed, insert the pop tab into the panel holes , then lock the tab in place by pushing in the pin so it's flush with the pop tab.

@@bobbobby2978 The Prius C is the smallest Prius, when Toyota used to have three sizes of Prius. They were discontinued a couple/few years back. Interestingly, after the first few years of production, Toyota changed them to use more gas. I felt that was a move because the C version was becoming too popular and cutting into the market of the regular size Prius. Our Prius C has been a wonderful car.

That's some great advice. Recently I have been hearing a gurgling sound by the passenger side under the dash i know this has nothing to do with the battery but I have air bubbles coming from the radiator, Holes or reservoir i checked yesterday and the reservoir looks empty! I opened the radiator and it's full i checked the cap and it looks good. Im not a mechanic but I want to try and make it bleed. The engine wasn't overheating no coolant came out of the car when it made this noise also the person I bought it from installed a new water pump! So What is going on here? I dont trust mechanics in my opinion i think most mechanics are scumbags just like used car salesman.
I know this is off topic but The Government needs to crack down on these people selling duds especially to a single mother with 2 kids who saved up money for years to get a 8,000- 10,000 Dollar car for it to break down after a month. Im not saying all used car salesman are bad but most are. If they won't give me a warranty i will not buy.

I have 193k on my Prius, and it still charges up to green status in the Texas summer heat. It's not as often as when it cools back down, but it seems to be still charging and discharging as normal. I love this little car. Never thought I would own one. I'm not a tree hugger, and don't like the smell of my own farts. But I do like the way this little car works, Smooth and quick in everyday traffic. I romp on mine and it gets over 40mpg. I also stealth camp in it when traveling across country.

Thanks for posting. I replaced two of my modules two years ago, and then follow up every year with a grid charger/reconditioner treatment in the springtime. Still running very strong, fingers crossed. One thing I found was important, and it caused me to have to disassemble and reassemble my battery the first time I rebuilt it because it still acted like it was failing with the replacement modules installed, was it is real important to clean and recondition your battery bus bars and their terminals, and also to properly torque them down to the recommended specifications. Perfect modules, etc, will still act bad if the bus bars are not torqued and conducting properly.

Thank you thank you! This helped me a lot. My partner’s 05 just had a reconditioned pack put in 8 months ago and that stupid Christmas tree came on. I nearly had a heart attack. It ran down quickly the night before but was holding a solid charge up until then. It only goes down to purple when we sit with the AC or loud music on for 15+ minutes. But when he normally drives it’s almost always at green and when accelerating, it maybe loses one or two bars. Never more than that. I had detailed the car and added some small interior lights and my guess is that since I let it sit with the ignition on and the ac on that I drained it so low that it tripped the system. Cleared the codes and it hasn’t done it since. I’m going to have a pro look at the cells and see if there are any failing ones and just have him install the ones I bought.

I’ve had a Prius for 10 years. Before I purchased a used Prius, I was skeptical and asked several taxi drivers. They all said their old Prius ran over 400,000 miles and never had an issue with the NiMH battery. As a matter of fact, they all swear you could transfer the battery to another car and run it another 400k miles. They only had to retired the vehicle because all the mechanical and structural parts warn out. Needless to say for the time I had it, no issues at all. Thing to keep in mind is the auxiliary battery is small and needs a bit more monitoring. IE, disconnect auxiliary battery if you’re going to store the Prius for months. Battery naturally drains in non use mode and since it’s a tiny battery, it drains faster. I understand they’ve gone to Lithium for the Prius Prime but I can say I have 100% confidence in the NiMH.

I just had the red triangle with the exclamation point come up with check engine light and other yellow warning lights last Sunday and the AC went out along with the cruise control. Since it was Sunday many Toyota dealerships were closed. I drove two counties south to get to an open dealership and they said my Hybrid Water Pump was bad. I had them replace it and it cost me an arm and leg! They have a new building and I guess they have to recoup their investment plus it was Sunday too! This just motivates me more to invest in a scan tool and learn more about how to fix these myself! This is the first time I've had this problem so I had no idea what it was? I just bought a slow charger for my 12v battery since I've gone through 4 of them in 11 years. I just put in a replacement of a 4 year battery that lasted only 23 months. My Prius seems to eat these 12v batteries! I also invested into some new spark plugs and two torque wrenches so that when I get to 150,000 miles I'll change them out myself. The quote I got to get the plugs changed at my local Tires Plus was $150. Too rich for me!

I have been learning how these nimh batteries work when they are at low capacity, its best to put the cells on a trickle charger for a straight week at 100 miliamp charge at 3 volts above cell voltage. This will de-sulfate the battery cell and then when its charged you will take a battery load tester for lead acids and load the cell down for a full minute and check the amps as it trickles down, you should see with a good cell do 100 amps and slowly fall if it does not do 100amps or base capacity put it back on the trickle charger at 200ma and redo the load test. Once the battery is fully restored it will not off gas or heat when discharging like it was before but it will only give back 80 percent of capacity. The problem faced with hybrid batteries is that they charge the center of the battery capacity and they never get a full absorption charge. So from time to time take your hybrid on a 100 mile road trip on the interstate and do some really hard driving it will refresh the cells.

NiMH batteries don't work the same way as a Lead Acid but they are recovered in the same way - they don't "sulfate" per se but they do have what's known as "memory". In other words, if not used enough they'll wear out more quickly.

I couldn't get Torque-Pro to grab the PIDs ("Press ENTER" (Where is Enter?) so I used Dr. Prius. Most important is Internal Resistance. That's where the blockage is. Most Prius owners don't know that if you take all 28 modules to your Toyota dealer parts dept, you can exchange for 28 New Panasonic modules for $1950. For some, this is better than playing "Whack-A-Mole".

  • @chrisdash83
    @chrisdash83 Před 4 lety +2

OBD2 apps: There is no "Apple equivalent" - Apple's devices don't support the Bluetooth profile that is required. Can't use an iPhone for this (unless you have a WiFi-OBD2 dongle, but those are expensive).
As for the error codes: A very low (less than 10V measured without load) 12V battery can also cause the red triangle, VSC light and other errors. Check that before you go buying HV-battery modules or have it replaced entirely (the latter is probably better in the long run).

Is it normal for the charge to deplete overnight? When I start mine up after letting it sit even for a few hours, it is kind of sluggish and the battery bar shows half full and depletes to one bar by the time I get to the end of my street. It charges back up as I drive after that though.
Really great video, btw. Didn't realize you could monitor the batteries like that. Will have to give it a try.

    • @TheReubenBonnici

That is becuase it is a cold start. It uses less power from the engine and takes all from the battery. When you start it and still in park hit the gas pedal and the engine will start. Give it half a minute and you are good to go.
