Thanks, J.J. Christmas Eve 1968, got my first guitar--Sears Silvertone with strings 1/4" above the fretboard--and the White Album. Learned to "play" Birthday all up and down the first string. First lesson in listening to the record and picking out a tune.
I remember after listening to the white album for the first time a good friend of mine and me and two others passed an acoustic around and hammered out this song, we all contributed to figuring it out! Do you think McCartney picked up that style of thumb and brushing index finger from playing skiffle? I saw a video of a show with a very young Jimmy Page who was playing in a skiffle band on this English variety show and that was their method of playing! That video is floating around CZcams. When the host interviewed Page and ask him what he wanted to do in life was, his answer, “ I want to be a Biologist.” If they only knew!!

I don't think Paul really knows this style of finger picking is call COTTON PICKING NAMED AFTER ELIZABETH COTTON ,AT 6 YEARS OLD WAS GIVEN A RIGHT HANDED GUITAR, SHE HOWEVER WAS LEFT HANDED AND SHE TURNED THE GUITAR AROUND WITHOUT CHANGING THE STINGS, UNLIKE JIMMY HENDRICKS CHANGING THE STRINGS. I gave you a thumbs up James.

"Yesterday" also has that Paul strum sound ... a bit of it in "Michelle" and "I Will" ... it is simple but effective.
Mother Nature's Son is a pretty great example of Macca's fingerpicking/strumming style!
