    Alright I’m a huge Vox fan. I’ve owned the AC15 combo, the AC15 Head, the Mini Superbeetle, and a lot of other Vox amps. So I bought this little AC10C1 recently online from Sweetwater to give it a try. This is my deep dive video. I’ll run through the settings and play various types of electric guitars so you can get a sense of the tones it can produce.
    How does it hold up against it's bigger brothers? Let’s find out.

    All Vox amps are great, I swear.
    I have a Vox mini5 and it's unbelievable even at .5 watt setting. Just how is that loud? Defies physics n stuff.
    Built in rhythm sections, tuner, built-in effects, models every vintage amp you could ever want, besides a Jazz Chorus. Variable power settings of .5, 1 and 5 watts max, which is just obnoxiously loud and can def hang with light drums. Like I said they're built tf in! It Has a microphone input/channel so you can all out perform with just the amp, and use delay/reverb compressor ect. On your mic channel. Oh, and it will run on just 6 AA's for a way longer than it should. I'm talking days maybe a week of 2hr sets daily! Of course it has 9v ac adapter to just plug in. Emulated Headphone/line out, aux input.
    They are well worth the $200 or whatever it costs now. One of the most versatile bedroom amps that responds as a tube amp. I have also Fender Vibro-Champ and a Boss Nextone, but will never sale my Vox mini5! I've had it for 10years and its built like a tank, besides the ac adapter is cheap, but electrical tape is a wonderful repair tool! I have feelings about Vox amps and people need to know! These were before the little Roland Cubes, which pretty much copied the technology from this. But they still make the (basically) exact vox mini5 today, and that says alot.

    Great review, great amp! I have the LE with a warehouse speaker in it and it's perfect. Totally agree on the lack of an effects loop - sales would certainly improve with one - perhaps there will be a newer version with one in the future.
    I also added a speaker input in back so that I can use a Weber Mini Mass attentuator with it. It's a perfect combination to keep the level at bay (plus it provides a 1/4" line out and 1/4" headphone out to use.)

  • @benrait6764
    @benrait6764 Před rokem +1

    I have a Vox AC30s1 and also thought the overall tone was somewhat scooped, but learned after using it a lot that if you turn the bass and treble all the way down (off) the mids come through beautifully. Then you just add the minimum amount needed of bass and treble to get the mix you want. I'm pretty sure I am going to sell that and get the AC10s1 instead because it is still very hard to get the full sound and tone you want without having it pretty loud. Also, I'm old and don't like the weight of the 30. Anyway, great video. Very informative. These sound so much more like the 30 than an AC15 does.

    Hi Landon, I have to say I'm a Telecaster playing Vox man myself, especially playing through the top boost channel but I find that tweeking the tone cut to take the edge off the treble is a must - especially when playing Telecasters through them - as they can sound too shrill, but otherwise a winning combination for me!... 👍🙂

    I’ve had one for about 18 months or so, bought to play with buddies before Covid started and then I haven’t. I’ve swapped my tubes for JJs, seemed to smooth it out some. Not super necessary. Things I don’t like are that it doesn’t have room for an alnico speaker swap, and doesn’t have a speaker connector that can be used with an attenuator/interface like an Ox Box. I would prefer a generally better build quality with full features and a normal channel like an AC15. Would also like an effects loop.
    I do like the cleans, I’m a big Blue Rodeo fan and I get that sound perfectly. Playing through a partscaster with 51 Nocasters and a Gretsch G5622t with the blacktop broadtrons. I especially like the Gretsch through it.

  • @benrait6764
    @benrait6764 Před rokem +2

    I bought an AC30S1 last year, but it was too big and heavy and needed to be real loud to get the Vox tone I like. A couple months ago I got one of these AC10C1 and it is perfect for what I do and the volume I play at. I never use much reverb and pretty much leave it set on 1-2 to keep the tone from being too dry. The bass and treble controls are all I need to dial in a great mix. The only thing negative I can say about it is that the bass gets too loose when turned up high so I keep it around 4(for punchiness) and then dial back the treble to where it mixes well. This may reign in a little of the chime, but it is still the best small tube amp for my taste and music style. I have purchased a couple of the new tube emulating wonders which have come out recently but they all sound like "not tube" to me. One was a blues cube hot 30 and the other was something else solid state that was supposed to have all of the characteristics of real tubes, but they don't. I would recommend this amp for every tube guy unless you play metal. I use mine at practice with a full 5 piece band and don't even need to turn up past 4 or 5 to keep up.

    I've written this on videos on the AC-10 and I'll state here too; You can tame the input with a 12AU7 tube (V1 first tube in line), it doesn't change the tone, just give a smoother rise in volume ;-) I love my AC-10. My history goes back to playing a real 1964, that's where my love affair with this amp started in around 1980. The new version is very close, and to tame it down is really easy ;-) FWIW

    Bought a used AC10C1 for a good deal. It had a noisy tube, so replaced all 4 tubes with a Mesa set and got an immediate improvement. Replaced speaker with Celestion Greenback, feels like a thicker sound. With upgrades, total cost is close to new price which is OK. It is loud for my apartment, but it sounds so good, primarily for clean sound.

  • @davidbarlow431
    @davidbarlow431 Před 2 lety +4

    A quick note to the modders out there - speaker upgrade options for the AC10 are a bit limited. The power valves hang down right behind the speaker magnet with very little clearance so space is tight. Personally I wouldn't bother because the VX10 that's in it is pretty decent, but Celestion make a 10 in Greenback that slots right in if you want to upgrade.

    Have an AC10 as my main gigging amp; it mics up very well if I need more volume. I changed all the cheap Chinese valves for Cryo- treated Harma tubes. It sound absolutely superb. I tend to use a midway gain with a clean boost in front - amazingly it cleans up more pleasingly on the guitar volume that way and is fantastically touch sensitive. A real gem!

    I have the same Vox AC10C1 and plugging in an extension speaker mutes the internal 10" speaker.
    So any cab you connect will be replacing the internal speaker, not adding to it.

    One of the best second amps for a 2 amp set up , especially with mid scooped Fender's.
    I know a lot of experienced players that avoid Vox, as the 15 and 30 have traditionally limited applications.IMO, the 10 was always EQed a bit more flat, while retaining just enough of the mid buzz and top chime.They could have just left the reverb out,, and put a better speaker in ( for example).Pedals do digital Plate better.
    Not the amp alone for lower and Bari tunings , needless to say, but some added meaness combined.

    Great review / demo! The AC10 is the best sounding amp I've ever owned. I think it has a dynamic, responsive feel, rather than just sounding 'on', if that makes any sense. But, you're absolutely right, it's a loud thing even at its quietest - certainly if you want a good amount of gain. Turning the bass down a bit can help keep the volume more manageable, though. All the best, and thanks for posting this great video!
