  • Today on the WorkBench, I am working on the 1999 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra by Monogram. I picked this kit up at my local Ollie’s wholesale a few weeks ago. I am surprised at how much detail is in this kit.
    The separate individual parts for the suspension system is awesome as well as the overall flash content, or should I say lack of flash content.
    This looks to be an awesome build, so stick around until the end to see how it comes out. Oh, because I have been having a devil of a time getting a great paint job on my builds lately, I am going back to my roots and going full on acrylic paint and clear on this build.
    I hope that you enjoyed watching this video as much as I did building the kit.

      Can anyone really have too many Mustangs? Go ahead and add a few more, what the heck... Auto World just released another AMT 1966 Ford Mustang Fastback 2+2 recently. So if you don't have one, or four of those already you may want to pick up another one right? LOL ! Thanks for watching!

    I’m new to the model car scene. Picked this exact model kit up at Ollie’s, would be my third kit, first Mustang. Hand-painted everything, for some reason, dropped it MANY, MANY times, used cheap glue on the headlights so now the headlight glass is white, decals are crooked, used a black sharpie to outline the taillights, and the tiny fog lights ROCKED. MY. SHIT. Everytime I accidentally knocked this car down onto the carpet, I would pray to all the beings above that the fog lights didn’t escape… and they did. The tiny Mustang emblem was traumatizing, wrangled that pony like a cowboy for 20 minutes before I got it on there straight and strong. Overall, very nice kit for the price. Loved seeing how your’s turned out.

      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 9 měsíci

      Wow! Sounds like you had your hands full with this one... Being that this was your third kit, it sounds like you're doing pretty well. There will be times when everything goes together great, and other times that it won't. Don't let the difficult kits get to you. When you are working with clear parts, don't use the same glue on them that you use to say, put the engine halves together. That glue will fog clear parts. There are plenty of other adhesives that you can use that won't fog the clear parts. I use Mod Podge for the clear parts, and it dries clear without fogging. That little Mustang emblem is a pain to get into place for plenty of people. To tell the truth, it could have been engineered better. Like most things in life, the more you do that thing, the better you will get at doing it. Sounds to me like you did pretty well with this one, and I'm pretty sure you'll do better with the next one, and your building skills will improve in time. If you ever get to a point where a kit is frustrating you, just set it aside, take a break, and come back to it after a little while. IMHO, these kits are getting too expensive to destroy or throw away just because they do not fit together well for the moment. Good luck with your future projects, and thank you for watching my video.

    I go to Ollie's regularly looking for their bargains on classic and muscle car kits. Because I am not a modern cars enthusiast and the box art makes it look toyish, I keep overlooking the SVT Mustang. Watching your video made me look at it with a different perspective. Will definitely buy it on my next visit.

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před rokem +2

      I am like you, not a huge fan of the modern car kits, but I'm also not a fan of building the same old muscle cars from the 60s and 70s over and over again. Once in a while, I like to change things up and build something that I have never considered building before. Even if the box art isn't the greatest representation of the product inside of the box. Sometimes, it can be a great thing to step outside of ones comfort zone. I hope that you get this kit and have fun building it!

      Thank you! Now that you mention it, the ride height is a little on the high side and I just thought that it was me... Still, the kit builds up nice despite of the few flaws. I didn't like the rear axle set up. When I tried to attach the rear wheels I felt like I was going to break something. That's why I opted to just glue the rears in place.

    Very nice build, I really enjoy your step by step guidance. I built this same model and used a shade of purple on mine too. I like your color better, I have a question, you mentioned that you paint the hood of your kit with the body, how do you keep the hood from sticking ? I have the same variation in color if I paint my hood separately. You did a very good job, thank you for sharing! 👍👍👍

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thank you! To be honest, I'm not sure how it is that the hood never sticks on me. It never does and I never really put much thought into the possibility that it might. I put the hood in place either by its own support, or I tape it in place, then spray... I don't know how much paint you're applying but I apply just enough to get full coverage and an even coat. I don't go overboard with the paint because it covers up the small details. Things like door and trim lines, lettering etc. It might be the type and or the amount of paint being applied that makes the difference. As you may be aware, I mostly use craft paints. They generally, when thinned correctly, go on fairly thin and are less tacky then an enamel from a can. They dry quicker than enamel from a can due to the different makeup of the paint itself. All of these can be a factor, but to tell you the truth about it, I honestly don't know how I keep the hoods from sticking closed. Might I suggest that if this is a problem that you're experiencing, look at how much paint you're applying to see if that might be the issue. Good luck and I hope this helps you out.

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench
      @scaleautoguysworkbench  Před rokem +1

      Thank you for the questions! Yes, I do thin my acrylics before spraying them. Over the years I have used several different thinning agents. For a while I was using ModelMaster acrylic thinner until I ran out and it was no longer available. I then switched over to distilled water. That worked fairly well but drying time had increased slightly. I found what I am currently using at Hobby Lobby for a decent price and gave it a try. It's called Masters Touch Flow Medium. It works really well, that is if I don't over thin the paint... I always prime all of the parts before top coating them. It is necessary to prime, especially with acrylic paint. If you don't prime the paint can be easily removed by your fingertips, never mind anything else that comes into contact with the paint. The paint needs something to bond to so, prime everything.Thanks for watching!

    • @scaleautoguysworkbench

      @Southpaw When I apply by hand, it's straight from the bottle. The purpose of thinning for spraying is because the paint is too thick to spray and must be thinned.
