Fabric (be aware fabric comes in different widths depending on what you buy, so measure your bench and calculate yardage before heading to the fabric store)
Foam (I used pre packaged foam because it was already the width I needed, but you can also buy it by the yard)

I bought a large white trunk to store my infant niece’s stuff in czcams.com/users/postUgkxNuLbiXpLQ-mKH5NlyjrNe88hiCk2N3Cg, as she comes to my house frequently. For now, it’s toys on one side and diapers, wipes, and other baby care items on the other. As she gets older, it will be all toys. I had originally wanted a trunk with a hinged lid, but I was afraid of her smashing or pinching her fingers in it. This will be a much safer option. The lid has great padding in it and it is actually nice to sit on. It feels very sturdy and secure. Looks like it can be wiped clean easily. If it gets abused by her, I won’t be terribly upset because I paid less than $50 for it on Prime Day.
I’m glad the family are keeping your videos up for people to continue to learn from you. 💕
I cannot explain how thankful I am for your video. I never in a million years would have thought I could cover RV cushions like a legit sewing ninja would but I just did! I didn’t even cry out of frustration, not one tear! I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤️! Thank you so much!!!
Thank you, thank you for keeping this video up. I was a bit intimidated by this process but Melanie taught it in an easy way and my cover turned out wonderful. I continue to learn and sew great items from this channel. RIP, Melanie❤ 15:00
Just finished my bench cushion - I love it! You helped me make the cushion and also an envelope pillow to put on top. I'd love to send you a picture. You're my hero!
I am a beginner sewer and have made several cushions for my living room and kitchen. Your video was BY FAR the most direct and simple to follow, and I really appreciate it! I really like the way you explained the corners, it's pretty much foolproof. I have just made one cushion for our outdoor furniture; four more to go! It turned out almost perfect! (I say almost because of my skills, not your tutorial). Thank you!
Just finished my second cushion, this for my granddaughter’s reading loft. Your video made it happen! This one was a long trapezoid. Seven feet on the long side, but your instructions saw me through. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much, I'm re-doing my sisters bench seats for her dining table and this gives such clear instructions I know I won't have a problem! X
These instructions were just what I needed to make a first time bench seat. Thank you so much.
Melanie, thank you so much for this great tutorial! Just finished the bench cushion last night and it came out amazing! It took me a little longer than 2 hours, as I am pretty new to sewing, but your directions were so easy to follow. I'm really happy with my end result, I wish I could post a picture. On to the envelope pillows! Keep posting these awesome projects:) Thanks again!!!
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have only sewn a few things ever and was able to make my own bench cushion. Your clear explanation of measurements and the velcro sides helped so much. Thank you!
This is exactly what I was looking for! And to remind me about the corners is awesome. Can't wait to make mine!! Thank you
I had questions on Velcro for my cushion covers and came across this video. Thank you for keeping Melanies channel going. Sweet Melanie has shared her skills to so many. Thank you. RIp sweet Melanie.
Love the bench, and awesome tips for making a cushion!TFS!
Thank you for showing how to sew the corners and top and bottom to sides so clearly, Melanie. Your tutorial was VERY helpful!
I just finished my cushion for my outdoor glider. I'm just a beginner and I found this very helpful! I had to watch the video countless times. LOL. It is a little intimidating but it is very easy to follow. Thanks so much!
Thanks for this amazing tutorial! I had to make a couch for theatre and never upholstered anything in my life. You saved me a lot of time and frustration!
Hi Melanie, just wanted to say thanks for your fantastic step by step instructions. They were easy to follow for a complete beginner like me. I just finished making my first cushion today for some outdoor seats, have a few more to make so will be rewatching your video in the days to come. keep up the amazing work and thanks again!
You're a life saver. I've had a project to replace a cushion on a old chair brewing for a couple of years. I have a small sewing machine that doesn't have a zipper foot so finding a pattern with velcro or even buttons was a challenge. Thank you so much!! I'm starting my project today!
Thank you so much for the tutorial. I'm making a mattress cover for a cradle that I had made. Your technique on the corners were extremely helpful.
Thank you so much! Your instructions are clear and easy to follow. I made 2 cushions in about 4 hours and that's great for me! The project is finished in a day-yay! Sharon
Awesome! So simple!!! I WAS having anxiety over recovering two single daybed cushions, but no more! Thank you!!
Best method EVER! I've tried other methods, and this one is by far the best and easiest. Thank you so much!
So, we are deffinately novice sewers, and we made this and it turned out way better than we expected!!! My niece is having a birthday at my parent's cabin, and they have an amazing back porch with a breathtaking view. But the old bench cushion was a little sad. We didn't have a ton of $ or time to find the perfect bench cushion... cut to... this video. The instructions were so thorough and clear that we never felt lost. I am deffinately subscribing! Thanks so much!!!
I wanted to let you know that as a novice sewer I was quite dubious that I could make this bench cushion but your video and instructions were so clear that I attempted it and it came out beautifully. Thank you for providing this and I can't wait to try more of your projects.
I am so put out at myself for not finding your video sooner. Your instructions were very clear and made the project as easy as you claimed. Thank you for sharing.
This is a fantastic tutorial! You explained every step so concisely that I feel I, not being a great seamstress, can accomplish a gorgeous cushion, just like yours! THANK YOU!!!!
THANK YOU! I was 1/2 way through this process and second guessing myself...you gave me confidence I was on the right path!
Wow! Thank you so much! I really doubted I could do this but your explanations were so clear and easy to follow. The hardest part was stuffing the 58" foam into the cover!
Thank you for this! My window box cushion project was a bit more complicated but your video helped a lot! Your explanation of how to sew the corners was a HUGE help.
The best of the tutorials I’ve looked at and helped me enormously. Job done ✅.
Thank you 😊
Thank you! This tutorial saved my sanity! Easy to follow and very clear instructions, just what i needed as a newbie seamstress !
Will always be inspired by you Melanie RIP ❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏🙏
Couldn’t have done this without your videos. Added piping too. Thanks so much, Melanie!
Made 2 of these bench cushions today very easy. Thanks for the tutorial Melanie.
Oh my gosh! You are the best! Thanks for the wonderful video! Your instructions are right on. Made a bench cover and it turned out just like you said. Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video for folks - very thoughtful!
What a great turnout just found you so happy as I need to make a pad for the top of a toy box for extra seating
This is the best video I have ever seen on doing corners and I have a professional workroom! Thank you so very much for an excellent demonstration!
Beautiful!! And this is the first tutorial that I found that explains corners clearly and easily! Total revelation! Thank you Mélanie!
Glad to hear that!! Happy Sewing!
This is the best method and video I’ve watched. Thanks Melanie Ham
Thanks so much for really straighforward instructions - I made 3 of these and they all turned out perfectly!
Thank you so much Melanie! Your video was great; had everything I needed to know. Couldn't have done it without you.
I just love this video. I tried others but couldn't understand their instructions and I almost gave up....until I found this! OMG! you made it so easy. I am motivated again!! Thank you so very much!!
Fabulous! I have an outdoor (undercover) wicker setting and am making a bench seat cushion and one each for the smaller chairs. First chair finished and it looks so polished. I've wanted to do this for years, but have never summoned up the courage. Thank you for your clear instructions!
Thank you Melanie. I will definitely try this for my garden bench. Great x
Great video. I've always struggled with box cushions. Thank you!
t
Thank you for your tutorial! one of the best demonstrations for how to sew boxed corners!
I wrote another comment below but I forgot to add that for some reason I was mesmerized by the pins you used in this video! So I used your link and bought them! It took about a month to arrive and actually today was the first time I had a chance to sew/use them. AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM! There's something about the flat flower head that is nice to work with, plus the best part is if one happens to fall on the floor, it is easy to see it! Can't tell you how many times I've searched the carpet to find a nearly invisible pin!! Thank you for introducing them to your viewers - I am 100% pleased with them and in fact have put all my other pins out of my pincushion and into a drawer. My flower pins now have pride of place lol
This was great!!! Very easy! Thanks!
You inspired me and I’m now ready to tackle this project I’ve been avoiding. Thank you!
Been a long time since I last sewed anything, and found this after I made a mess of my first attempt. REALLY helpful, and I love the finger-wagging at the "don't backstitch" part. I might have to put that finger-wagging on a loop for when I start to do stupid stuff in the rest of my life! Thanks Melanie!
That was perfect! Exactly what I needed and easy to follow. Thank you!
Thank you for the easy instructions mainly the corners, I am making a big dog bed and I had to stop because I could not get the corners to match up. Your video really helped me.
Thanks for such clear directions! Very happy with my finished product!!
This is a great video! I wasn't sure how to do the mitered corners, and this was easy to follow. Thanks!
Finally someone who clearly explains corner sewing. There is not much information about it, to take into account. THANKS
Excellent instructions! They are clear, detail oriented and concise. I’ve tried making cushion covers before and they did not turn out well. This time I used your instructions and the cushion turned out perfect.
This tutorial was so clearly explained. Just what I needed. Thank you for posting.
Thank you for this my bench cover is great. super helpful with the detailed plan and helpful hints, especially regarding the corners.
Thank you, I can't wait to make a cushion for my porch bench. Saddened to read several posts, RIP, quite a legacy left behind,
Hi Melanie! Thank you for this video, it will be very helpful to me. I need to make cushions for my wicker set, two chairs and a love seat. Seems very easy, so will get busy on them soon!
Amazing tutorial which really worked! My son now has a new bench seat cover which was much easier to make than I had thought it would be. Thank you very much!
Now, I am ready to begin sewing the outdoor cushions I wanted to make for our new swings! Thanks!!
Thanks for creating such an easy to follow sewing tutorial. Confirmed my plans for creating some flashy new cushions covers!
I have just finished making this bench seat cover!! I realise it was published 2016 but was SO helpful as I didn't want to use a zipper. Once again Melanie thanks for a great tutorial.
I am a beginner and just finished a 61 inch swing cushion by using your tutorial. Thank you. I could not have done it without your instructions. 👍
very clear, very easy for beginners like me. Thx!
Beautifully done. Thank you for this. I've some bench cushions to make shortly and this has really helped.
awesome video, thank you so much for being so clear and explaining everything so well. The velcro on the side opening was brilliant! I was getting really nervous about using a zip as Im a complete beginner on sewing. I will be following your video to make some outdoor cushions so wish me luck!!!
Great tutorial.!!! Exactly what I needed. Will be making some bench cushions now. Thank you
love love love the pillows.....looks exactly like the pillow cover I made:)
Well done tutorial! I made a 10 ft window seat cushion using your video. It turned out wonderful. Thank you!
easiest tutorial I've watched yet! Thanks.
Perfect tutorial. Just finished mine for a custom sized bench I built last year. Turned out so good! Thank you! Will continue to watch your videos!
woohoo! nice work!
Hi!
Angle you are glad I found you're channel, as I will be making one too, Thx.
Wow that was so helpful. I knew there was a way to do this with velcro instead of a zipper, but it's been so long since I've sewn anything, I couldn't put it into steps that would have worked as well as your plan. You did a great job with the video as well.
Really appreciate this video; I'm making a bench cushion from an Indian patchwork throw I bought from Tuesday Morning. Here's something I learned from my husband: an electric knife is a great tool for cutting foam. Just make sure to wash it well! Thank you, again!!
This was SO helpful thank you very much. Really easy to understand and you taught it beautifully....I was SO pleased with the result
Great directions! I love the Velcro! I’ve always used zippers and they are such a pain..
Great video! Very easy to follow and the cover turned out great.
I am seeing this 5 years after you posted. Great help as I need to make one of these and you made it simple and neat.
Thank you for the great video. The instructions were very easy to follow and I'm pleased with my finished cushion.
Just made this and it turned out great! Took maybe 3.5 hours. Great tutorial!
I feel like a real dummy. Thank you for telling me about the little arrow. I love the pillow. I just inherited a beautiful bench and it looks so plain. I will definitely be making a cushion for it.
SO helpful! Just what I needed to know how to do!
Finally made this cushion for the bench my husband made a few weeks ago. The hardest part was those pesky corners! But I watched the video showing that part several times and it finally sunk in. Next one will probably have a zipper instead of Velcro. By the time I got the foam cushion inside the cover the Velcro was all covered with the batting. But, this was a fantastic video and project. I’m very happy with how it finished. Thank you Melanie!
You made creating this cushion easy to understand, thank you! Now I can go use the lovely seagrass (color) linen I bought for the bench in my dining room. I've been dreading cutting it till I watched your video
Very helpful as I needed to know how to sew corners and this explained it perfectly.
thank you! Just made this. Took me 8 hours total cus Im a beginner and kept making mistakes. I kept having to undo my stitches and redo them. But overall it turned out beautiful
This is a great tutorial. Thanks for sharing Melanie.❤️
Your video is great! Really helpful.
Having sew’n box seats a few times, but a while ago, I forgot the sides attaching trick, thanks to your video, I was able to refresh that exact step by skipping to the video. Once again, thank you.
Thank you from Scotland 😄😄 attempting 1st cushion so fingers crossed x
Thanks! Excellent help. Made some great cushions for my van build.
Excellent video. thank you so much!
Love this video! Great job of explaining all the details. The only thing I would have liked was instructions on a way to attach ties. I made this for my Mother-in-law’s porch swing for Mother’s Day. I think she will like it. I figured out a way to attach them. Hopefully it will hold up. It turned out great!
Thanks for posting, very helpful....
You make it look doable. Thank you. I am going to try it. Yay!
Took more than 2 hours but cushion turned out great. Thanks so much!
GREAT JOB , LOVE THE MUSIC WHO IS PLAYING.
