Any time I need to know how to do something, I watch Angela first. And the tools Sailrite sells are the way to go. I bought a sewing machine last year and a hot knife. Invaluable and worth every dime. Do you sell a machine with an open arm? I sew for fire departments and it's tough to get those sleeve cuffs in my machine.

    I have used this video several times, very well done, easy to follow. This time I should have used 1.5" strips for the piping as my outdoor material and cording was thicker than was used in the vid. I used an old Singer adjustable zipper foot and moved my needle close to the piping for final join.
    I have used my soldering iron in the past, this time I used my serger. The material was very shreddy, so the serger was useful. The soldering iron takes longer than serging imho. A Sailrite machine and hot knife would be lovely if I was commercial.
    For sewing the zipper line, I used masking tape (tripled) to make my guide line. Worked great.
    I am not a professional, and if you don't look too close, my cushions look pretty darned good.

    • @amd5617
      @amd5617 Před rokem

      Ps, I have used the double-sided tape for piping (in the past). Without a commercial machine, it is a gluey mess and a struggle for standard sewing machine needles. I do not recommend for home sewing machines.

    Great video! She did gorgeous work :) I picked up some nice tips now for making my own cushion covers. The patio set I just bought came with cushion inserts but no covers and I got fabric to make my own covers. I didn't know that handy trick for making a nice zipper installation and my previous method for making piping was unnecessarily complicated. I wish I could afford a hot knife but I'll have to make do without it. I guess I'll just have to overedge the seams to keep the fabric from unravelling.

    You guys make the best step-by-step-step DIY videos. After watching this one, like many others, I feel empowered to take on projects that I never would have though I could tackle. Thank you for this rich source of educational sewing demonstrations. I don’t own one of your machines, but because of your customer service, I am becoming more inclined to purchase the blue version that has the zigzag walking foot.
    What does the white 111 commercial machine have or do, that the blue machine does not? Thank you for an explanation about the differences between the models. I know the capabilities of the red machine.

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před 6 lety

      Thanks for your positive comments! The Sailrite Ultrafeed LSZ-1 is a great sewing machine. The Sailrite 111 has recently been improved and is now called the Sailrite Fabricator Sewing Machine. Here is a link: www.sailrite.com/Sailrite-Fabricator-Sewing-Machine-in-Power-Stand-with-Workhorse-Servo-Motor
      The Fabricator is a straight stitch only sewing machine, it does not sew zig-zag. However, the Fabricator does have a few advantages over the LSZ-1 it has a bigger underarm space, higher foot lift, a knee lever foot list, and a larger bobbin. Both the LSZ-1 and the Fabricator are great sewing machines. Let me know if you have more questions. You can email me at: ericg@sailrite.com if you like.

      +gwen sumlin You can cut piping or cording strips as straight cuts, as we did in this video. It will save on fabric usage doing it that way. However, if it is cut on the bias it will not ravel as much and will take curves better, but it will use more fabric. So... the choice is always yours with advantages and disadvantages to each.

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před 7 lety +1

      Yes, a home sewing machine without a walking foot can usually sew lighter upholstery fabric (as seen in this video) easily. If your sewing machine can sew three layers of denim blue jeans, then it should be able to do a job like this easily.

    • @SamCole

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před 3 lety +1

      Yes, but when using High Density Foam cut it only 1/4" larger on all sides. Then cut your top plate to the same size as the slightly larger foam. After taking away a 1/2" seam allownace this will make the cover slightly smaller than the over-sided foam compressing it slightly.

    Is there any point in cutting welting on a bias with this kind of fabric?

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před rokem

      Cutting fabric for piping on the bias gives you two advantages over cutting straight cut piping. Cutting on the bias will reduce unraveling of the fabric edge. Also the fabric will take a turn on a corner or curve more smoothly than a straight cut piping. However, it takes more labor and seams to make a bias cut piping, so you must pick your process based on which benefit or negative you want.

    doesn't the basting tape gum up the needle?

    • @SailriteDIY
      @SailriteDIY  Před rokem

      Using basting tape (Seamstick) for canvas on a very light weight fabric may gum up the needle rather quickly because the lighter fabric does not have the larger fibers or weave to help clean the needle as it exits the fabric. In those situations it may be best to use a seamstick that does not have as strong an adhesive (like item #20306) or instead use pins to hold the fabric in place as you sew. A gummed up needle and parts can be cleaned off with some rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball or Goo Gone (we do not sell this). I like to use McLube #845 on my parts and needle to clean and keep glue from building up.

    I used the tips from your videos to make some gorgeous slipcovers for my resin wicker patio furniture:
    s31.postimg.org/98rnkwffv/02502_cc03_sm.jpg and
    s31.postimg.org/9nv7jyqi3/02518_cc04_sm.jpg
    The seat cushions are bullnose style with piping and I used your awesome foam cord for that. The chairs came with the foam inserts so I did not have to buy those. The back cushions have 4-inch boxed corners, piping and zippers along the bottom. I used Richloom "Muree Primrose" fabric that I got on a great half-price sale at JoAnn's and Coats & Clark polyester thread to match. I had to get the #5 coil zippers from The Zipper Lady, (in peach color) as SailRite did not stock any colors of zippers, it seemed, aside from black and white. The background of that fabric is a sort of peachy-beige color, though it appears white in photos. I wanted everything to match and I think they turned out well.
    I don't have an industrial sewing machine, just an ordinary home machine. It does not have a walking foot. I will say that makes it more difficult to work with this type of fabric. I opted to not use the basting tape (trying to save money), though I'd definitely recommend it as it would make it easier to make the piping. Possibly I'd even use it to baste the seams to keep everything lined up until you can get it sewed together. Definitely get a piping foot if you don't have one. I got a low-shank piping/cording foot for about $5 on eBay. It made the task sooo much easier! I didn't have a hot knife either and so just cut the fabric with my Fiskars scissors. It frayed like crazy - ugh! When I finished the seams, I over-edged them after trimming off the frays so that I could wash the slipcovers if I ever needed to.

    What are the seam allowances being used? 1/4" or 1/2"?

      Kathy Upton For this project we made a piping that would place our seam at 3/8" in from the edge.

      Sailrite the seam allowance for the boxing to the main cushion fabric and the zipper fabric to the main cushion fabric is 3/8" seam allowance? when you cut out the main fabric you subtracted an inch for compression, the boxing fabric is 4" wide the width of the cushion so i was assuming a 1/2" seam allowance, does this make sense?????

    For VO, I highly recommend taking breaths at natural stops, like at the end of sentences, instead of randomly throughout the video, making sentences run into one another and pausing in the middle of phrases.

      Chris Tempas, as a psychiatrist who has worked with stutterers and people with many kinds of speech impediments, this is maybe the best he can do to avoid stuttering or stammering at certain words, often words with consonants that begin a sentence or phrase. By pausing at what seems like an awkward spot of his talking, he is spacing his breath to possibly speed or talk smoothly through difficult words or sounds. The unnatural-sounding pausing is planned to avoid the shame of a terrible burst of stuttering, which is preferable to those with speech difficulties. The non-fluency of the speech of some people is very stressful, because they have to almost think more about planning their articulations, rather than on what they are saying, with hope of sounding less odd. They do the best they can, and expend tremendous energy trying to avoid full blown panic attacks associated with non-fluent speech. He knows how he sounds. He chooses the least of two evils. Before judging someone, maybe it’s better to try to understand the reason this problem is occurring. This is only one of many possible explanations of this type of speech impediment. Please do not take offense at my explanation. You probably speak naturally and fluently, and simply take it for granted. It might be better to have empathy and be grateful for your normal sounding vocalisations. Thank you.
