THANK YOU so much for this tutorial! I made a bunch of box cushions following your directions and they came out so nicely. Both the cutouts in the zipper corner and the box corner are confusing at first, but follow the directions exactly and it works!! I took another person's advice and did it on a scrap piece of fabric and that is when it all makes perfect sense. Keep the tutorials coming please :)

Thank you so much for this tutorial. I just completed my first box cushion. It's not perfect (zipper is a wee bit wonky), but it's so much better than what we were using. I had no idea how to accomplish this, but you made it so clear with your excellent instruction - from measuring and cutting to installing the zipper, sewing up corners and even putting it onto the cushion (the second hardest part). Whew. Thanks!

You are clearly very skilled and watching your speed, vs my own, reminds me that I’ve got a lot of practice ahead of me. I’m a mid 40s man who is always trying to learn something new. I purchased my “project runway-Brother” machine a few years ago but was soon sidetracked with 3D printing as my winter project. I know this is not a new video but just wanted to post a THANK YOU. I was able to make four bench cushions with zippers, I have always avoided projects that need zippers. Tip: I made a 2x2.5 template for cutting the box corners after the zipper was attached and labeled the edge that was to go along the fold, for me that was the longer edge. No confusion and went quicker. Since I was making bench cushions I had to use the long side whenever you said the short side. Another tip for those making bench cushions: work out your measurements carefully. I first chose 45” wide fabric but would have had sooooo much wasted fabric in order to fit 47” wide cushions, needed almost 3yds per cushion. Getting 54” wide fabric was much better, needing less than 1.5yds per cushion.
Again, thank you for your clear instructions, I really was able to make them. Your video was encouraging and enabling.

Thank you!!! I watched this multiple times. I am a very beginner sewer, and I couldn't grasp the part about cutting the inside corners at all. BUT I did a "practice" cushion and it worked! To the other people out there questioning if she misspoke about the seam allowance numbers, she DID NOT! To put it another way, (thickness - 1) / 2 = D distance you are measuring out from the THREAD LINE (not the edge) AS WELL AS the folded fabric edge. When you sew and leave another .5 inches on each side, that is how you get back to your total thickness.

Thanks for confirming this! I posted the other day that I didn't understand the inside corner either, but after I read your post, I decided to do a "practice corner" using paper and tape and it all made sense after that. Cutting a piece of 2x2 would only give you 4" depth, but when you go in 1/2 in seam allowance, you get an extra inch of depth. If that's still confusing to you guys, go ahead and do a practice corner--it only takes 2 minutes and it will clear everything up.
