LUNA ROSSA LAUNCH: Do beautiful yachts still win races?

  • A design which is obviously of similar philosophy to that of ETNZ and still sharing many loose features with Alinghi's BoatOne which have now because hallmarks of the class, but with smoother line more sympathetic to the eye. But in 2024 are beauty and beautiful compatible?

    As a designer I think the shapes and lines on ETNZs boat are actually smoother and less „forced“ - it is actually a rather elegant boat shape wise - however their paintjob creates effects, that make it incredibly hard to read the shape properly and don’t support the elegance of the boat.

      Similar to NZL 20 from 1992 with the graphics on the hull to conceal the tandem keel setup

      Strongly agree. I think their graphic designer is terrible, but the hull lines are so far the best of the three. it's like Te Rehutai but well harmonized. I like it a lot. France has a good graphics team, so I full y expect it to be the beauty of the pageant. This Luna Rossa is as you say, forced. I don't think I can put it better.

      I personally really, really like the minimalistic Luna Rossa chrome graphics. I just think the shapes and lines underlying ETNZs messy graphics are more elegant than the one of LRPP. However compared to the crazy shapes on Alinghis boat I still think LRPP is more on the elegant side. 😂

    No question it's a great looking boat. Apart from what looks like a scolloped foredeck, on first glance I do think it probably looks closer to Gen 1 Te Rehutai than it does to Gen 2 Alinghi or ETNZ boats though. Will be interesting to see more footage. A massive flex from ETNZ to launch then go sailing the same day in their new boat, day 2 was 100% flight time. That would have made a few of the teams raise an eyebrow or two.

    ETNZ are brimming with confidence after their land speed record set recently as a part of their AC 75 preparation. They dumped their boat in the water and took it for a spin immediately. The opposition have had a few days to think about this action from ETNZ. The British boat will be interesting taken ETNZ and Ineos set the rules.

    I am not into boat-design at all and not sailing myself, I am just an interested viewer. I have been following the AC since Alingi entered the scene (I am Swiss, as you guessed right). So I learn from every video about all the things the teams have to consider. One of the greatest challenges seems to me that they spend most of the racing time on foils, so aerodynamics play a huge role, but a race can absolutely be shattered if they are doing bad when coming off the foils. So they can't completely ignore "regular" sailing. That seems to be a huge challenge. But hey, if it was easy, then everyone could do it, right 🤣?!

I did wonder if the bussel would make a big difference in semi-foiling conditions.
    Dans comments also make sense why all the boats are keeping their latest foils hidden for as long as possible, be interesting to know how long it takes to make a new set of foils. Could you CNC machine a set of foils from billet titanium in weeks rather than months...

The specific device ETNZ are using was first used by INEOS in this Cup and is a device also used on autonomous bin lorries (trash trucks). ETNZ then used them, but with a stick to get a better view on their test boat and have carried it across to their race boat, albeit they will have to come off for racing.

    Of course it matters. Look at the resurgence of 12 Metre racing around the world. And look at the J Class revival in Europe. Maybe the Americas Cup will return to Newport and Rhode Island Sound. Even as an Australian I would welcome that. Who could forget the great battles between the USA and Australia with gorgeous yachts like Weatherly, Intrepid and the Gretals. Look at the classic lines of an Olin Stephens designed and built yacht to understand why.
    Luna Rossa is gorgeous and the new AC classes have introduced a lot of new technology to racing. But it's not affordable to the weekend racer, so it's wider benefit is questionable.

    • @MozzySails
      @MozzySails  Před 2 měsíci +2

      the flaps are only allowed a single rotation point, so can't really get a true fowler flap. But if you move that rotation point further away from the wing (with a virtual pivot point and linkages) then you can mimic something similar which extends area as the flap comes down. As you suggest, I think sealing is the issue.

    That's the problem with fashion sponsors. You just can't have an ugly boat, no matter how much faster it would be.

      Nevertheless, this will be the year that the cup goes to Italy. Again.

      @@AnttiBraxl am Italian but I love your sarcasm. Honestly I don't think we will pull it off but I would hope to at least see some close racing. In the end we all want to see the sport competition drama not some dull boring drag race

      @@AnttiBrax@AnttiBrax, I kindly remember your last cup finished 7-3 (and could have been easily 7-4 or 7-5). Very few cups ended so close.

      Mi spiace ma non condivido. Gli Italiani da sempre uniscono bellezza e funzionalità tanto da avere successo nel mondo in ogni cosa che fanno.

    LUNA ROSSA are incapable of designing and building an ugly boat - however if ugly wins, then all the chrome and pizazz will loose its lustre overnight. Consigned to the A/C graveyard of abandoned hopefuls - along with INEOS which was properly ugly.

    Typical Italian design philosophy, doesn’t matter if it’s not the fastest car / yacht, as long as it looks the best and looks like it’s the fastest. 😊

      I doubt it. They’ve invested hundreds of millions over decades to try and win the cup and the only thing they’re interested in is going fast, not looking good

    All these foiling America's cup boats are as ugly as a sailboat can get. Appendages sticking out everywhere and a shape that looks like a 10 year-old's vision of a spacecraft. Give me a Sparkman and Stephens 72 footer any day.

      @swerne01= It's a matter of taste.
      Those 12 meters in the downwind legs made for somewhat boring sequences at times. Plus, some of the exhilaration of 50 kts sailing rubs off on the present AC videos.

    As a very biased kiwi, I have to say Luna Rossa is visually more beautiful than any boat so far. I’m a fan of the TNZ black boats, but not so much the nascar styled black, red and teal. It’s all a bit more is more, so add even more.

      I agree with this comment but I suspect there is something more behind it. Whether it is to conceal certain things or just purely meeting sponsor agreements. Would love to see a black boat with a silver fern weaving through it though!
