Joba Chamberlain didn't hit Derek Jeter intentionally. That was his captain and he has too much respect for Jeter for that. That's why Joba apologized.

One extra thing on the standing ovation for Jeter, the Boston Red Sox/NY Yankees is one of the most intense and longest running rivalries in North American sports so for him to get a standing O from the Boston crowd just shows how much he was respected as a player.

Little league is played with different bats and at the highest level is international as well. There are also some big little leaguers but they aged generally from 9-13.
5:10 This play happened in the 9th inning with 2 outs (the defending team was one out away from winning). Not only that, but the pitcher for that team had pitched a perfect game (no hits or walks allowed for the entire game), so if the runner was called out, the pitcher would've had a perfect game. To understand how rare that is, in all of MLB history, there have only been 23 perfect games. So yeah, it was a very big deal. The point of this moment specifically was, not only did the pitcher lose the perfect game on the last out of the game, but the runner was CLEARLY out based on video review. However, because of the rules, the play was not reviewable. After the game, the umpire who accidentally called the runner safe was literally crying because he felt so bad that he had ruined this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the pitcher. There are videos out there of the entire ordeal, so you might want to react to one of those if you're interested. Without a doubt, this was one of the saddest moments in recent MLB history in terms of blown calls.

At 5:03, the player who tipped his helmet (Manny Machado) to the player who made the catch (Adam Jones) were teammates for the Baltimore Orioles at that time. For the World Baseball Classic, Jones played for Team USA, which eventually became World Champions. While Machado played with the powerhouse Dominican Republic. USA won 6-3.

That kind of Sportsmanship, is really part of baseball. We all grew up playing baseball, girls and boys. We played in the street, our front yards or the local field. All the neighborhood kids knew each other and so its play and go walk home with each other etc. Some of that is the same with basketball, but much more so with baseball

A-Rod was smiling after getting dusted because a lot of MLB players enjoyed the knuckleball for it's odd, unpredictable trajectory yet R.A.Dickey won a Cy Young award with that very pitch. That clip of Mariano Rivera coming into the game for his final All Star appearance still gives me chills now several years afterward. The second to last clip was of Justin Verlander returning to Detroit for the first time following a trade to the Houston Astros.
He's not predicting where he's going he's going to the exact spot in which the ball come down enough for him to reach out and grab it. He's done this his whole life he knows exactly where the ball is going to be.

He played for Detroit for many years and when he returned with his new team (the Astros), they showed a tribute video on the screen in the stadium and the fans gave him a standing ovation. This is typical for a player who has spent a lot of time and has done great things with one team and then goes to another team via a trade or free agency. Their first game facing their former team usually gets them a nice tribute from the team and fans.
Watching Jeter coming off at Fenway off to his retirement always makes me cry. Our most hated rivals but respect is still given.

Mariano Rivera was the greatest relief pitcher (he was the closer, which means he pitches the last inning of close games), in history. His numbers are completely insane, head and shoulders ahead of everyone else. And in the postseason, he was way better, one of the best pitchers ever in the postseason over the span of about 20 years and 5 world series victories. He was the first player who ever went in to the hall of fame on a unanimous vote.
Derek Jeter, who got a similar ovation, was his teammate and captain for most of that career, with the same 5 world series wins including 3 in a row, 4 in 5 years, and one of the greatest teams of all time, the 1998 Yankees. Jeter played his last game in the stadium of his arch rival Boston Red Sox. They gave him a standing ovation. That was deep respect.
Jeter is known as being a real stand up, honest guy. During the steroid era, he said he didn't know anything about it (even though his teammate Roger Clemens was one of the biggest abusers) because anyone using it knew not to tell him. And he has so much respect everyone knew that had to be true. He was in 3 of the clips in this video, showing respect by former teammate Joba Chamberlain after accidentally hitting him with a pitch, his opponents, congratulating him I think on his 3000th hit (but I may be mistaken), and the fans of his main rival on his last game.

Jeter gets a standing ovation at Fenway park is a lot more important. Jeter is a New York Yankee and their blood rivals are the Boston red socks who play at Fenway. To give your blood rival's captain a standing ovation was really unexpected.

Just CZcams search for "little league baseball highlights" and you'll find a whole bunch of videos...need to remember, almost all of these kids are 11 or 12-years old, with a few 13-year old kids...I umpired Little League baseball for almost 20-years, and the baseball fan inside me was constantly amazed at how good some of these kids really are...and, THESE kids - the ones who've made it to the Little League World Series - are the best of the best...Plus, they're just kids, and the joy they have in simply playing a game is obvious on their faces...not to mention their antics in the dugouts!

Actually when people get hit, its usually on purpose. Most of these happen for "showboating" and strategic reasons. That's why the guy wanted to clarify it was an accident, also because Jeter is one of the most highly respected players of all time.

You would be surprised how many pitchers hit batters either lightly & or try to make it look like it wasn't on purpose to get a walk to base out of them instead of taking a risk that they might actually hit a homer & or score multiple points if the bases are loaded but there are times where the pitchers just don't like them and or they were talking trash so they do actually try to injure them - its crazy but it does happen & it is true you should do a reaction to the best Chicago Cubs highlights .. they are amazing as well you would really enjoy them & I would love to see your reaction to them ! A little trivia about the sport that I haven't seen mentioned yet. The bit of dirt between the grass and the wall in the outfield, is called the "warning track". It lets the outfielders know that they have just a few steps before they hit the wall (while they're keeping their eyes on the ball).

We don't have mini-league, but my son played catcher behind the batter. He was in the Little League All-Stars. I was a Coach assistant. It was an amazing experience. And yes we trained them to have good sportsmanship. If you lose, you shake the hand of the winner. I wish Trump understood that, My son does.
The one at 8:30 that you say looks like an easy catch is in fact an easy catch. What’s impressive is the throw to second base. The runner at first (The great Adam Jones) is about to tag up, but Trout throws a perfect strike to second from about the warning track after catching the ball flat-footed. It’s an incredible throw, and Jones acknowledges it afterward.
just commented on another video, explaining that in american sports, the crowd has less visiting fans than in european sports. well another thing to keep in mind for more context while watching compilations like this, is that in baseball, the white jersey team is the home team. and grey jersey is the visiting team.
The big bearded pitcher was Joba Chamberlain. He came up as a Yankee and was one of their top pitching prospects. He wasn't as good as they hoped, but not bad and eventually moved on to another team.
The player he hit was hall of famer Derek Jeter, who had been the Yankee Captain since Joba was a teenager and was the leader of the clubhouse been when Joba was with the team. He definately did NOT mean to hit him.

On the hit by pitch clip. The pitcher Joba Chamberlin was a former member of the Yankees and played with Derek Jeter (the guy he hit) that was accidental hence the apology. I have never heard of a single person on baseball who disliked Jeter who is definitely someone you should react to as he was one of the greatest players of the past 20-25 years

The term is a hung breaking ball, because it hangs high in the strike zone.

It’s kinda hard to tell, but the clip with everyone clapping is Mariano Rivera, he’s one of the best closing pitchers of all time and that was his final game, they called him “The Sandman” because they would play Enter Sandman by Metallica as his warm-up music when he came out of the bullpen to get warmed up.
Luka, A lot of players at bat are hit on purpose because they are crowding the plate, or trying take away some of the strike zone from the pitcher. By scooting up close to the plate a batter can fully extend his arms to all pitches in the strike zone. So pitchers "brush them back" by throwing the ball hard inside and nearly hitting them on purpose. If the ball hits the batter because each refuses to budge, the batter advances to first base, but not without a nasty bruise.
The pitcher wants to own the strike zone so he can pitch inside and outside, high and low, slow and fast. The outside breaking pitch doesn't work as well if the batter gets closer to the plate because he can reach it as it breaks.
On occasion, a pitcher hits a batter accidentally because the ball slips or just gets away from the pitcher's control. Usually, it's obvious at those moments that it was an accident but not always. Sometimes it's hard to tell and if the teams have a rivalry or a history of bad blood it's presumed the pitcher hit the batter intentionally. That's when fights break out that clear both benches. So when a player is hit, the umpire usually immediately give both teams a warning that there is to be no revenge of the other teams pitcher intentionally hitting the batter in the next half of the inning or players and managers will be thrown out of the game.

You can tell when a pitcher hitting a batter is accidental as the pitchers usually react in a very animated fashion. When it's intentional they just stand there and stare at the batter.
They end the grass in the outfield and put what's known as the "warning track" between the grass and the outfield wall. It's so a player can feel the change to know he's near the wall when running to catch the ball.
at 5:51 it is kinda funny because that was a home game for joey votto and the Reds. it is standard practice let the home team try to catch those balls. if it was a visiting team, then you should try to catch everything that goes into the stands. so joey grabbed the fan's "C" on his jersey as a way of saying "what kinda reds fan would do that?"
For Jeter’s last kit. Fenway is the home of the Red Sox which are the rivals of the Yankees which is the team Jeter is from. This is the biggest rivalry of the whole sport and has been for decades. Yankee fans can’t wear jerseys in Boston because Boston fans can get so violent about it. The fact that at home game in Boston they applauded for Jeter a Yankee is a big deal. Though he is now a hall of fammer.

I used to play against a team in the town next over (youth baseball) and I used to pitch for our team. I hated whenever I hit someone with a pitch more than anything else so I always just apologised immediately. One time I hit the opposing pitcher and told him I was sorry and he just went like "don't worry, you gotta throw harder than that before you need to say sorry".
Ended up playing with him years later due to our teams merging because of lack of players (I live in the Netherlands and baseball is not that popular here) and he ended up teaching me better mechanics and how to throw harder. Ironic how things turn out sometimes.

There's a difference between a player laying out for a catch or catching a ball at/over the wall and what is otherwise a 'fly ball'. Fly balls are actually very easy to catch so long as you can see it (sun can often get in the way or it pops so high that it kind of disappears against the sky). Yeah, it takes a little skill... players have to locate it, track it, and run to it, and make the catch... but all things considered, it's one of the more routine things in the game.

I have a suggestion on a potential series you could look at, that while not exactly something that will help you understand rules or stakes, will give some insight into the personalities of some of the drivers and the broadcasters who cover and participate in the sport.
the "NASCAR funny moments" series from the channel jake baskinger. there are several videos in the series that cover all sorts of shenanigans that happen during, before, and after races.
i thought you would enjoy it since you liked the "not so serious baseball" videos, and this is in the same vein except nascar.

It’s absolutely not always an accident. There are strategic reasons to hit a batter, and in certain cases, hitting a batter is retaliation for the opposing team’s pitcher hitting one of your batters in a previous inning. But yes, a lot of the time it’s an accident. Pitchers hate batters who “crowd the plate,” a term which refers to the batter standing very close the the plate, therefore narrowing the strike zone for the pitcher. Sometimes, a pitcher will then throw close to the batter, warning him to back off. Sometimes they pitch a little too close and the batter gets hit.
Pro Tip: when a pitch narrowly misses hitting the batter in the head, forcing the batter to drop to the ground to avoid it, this is referred to as “chin music.”
You need to watch the top 10 someday or just best mlb defensive plays. It’s amazing.
