You'll find a lot of cartoons are created by individuals who are neurodivergent. The manner in which they're able to interlace specific life lessons whether dealing with everyday things or moral standpoints. The individuals who create cartoons (all kinds both kids & adult) are absolutely brilliant and their way with stories, characters, and the dynamics that are created with the different personalities, being able to find positives in each and every one of them allowing neurotypical people to identify with them. It's massive underlying meaning and understanding for neurodivergent and identifying politics for neurotypicals who adhere to social standards and roles.

I have a personal theory that both SpongeBob and Squidward are on the spectrum, and that both exhibit the often contradictory traits and stereotypes of the condition.
SpongeBob is definitely the innocent nonconformist who, for the most part, doesn't mean to be harmful or rude despite often behaving in ways that others might perceive as such. Squidward, on the other hand, is more "cultured" and shows extreme interest in rules and convention, which SpongeBob definitely exhibits too, but more so for matters of safety and law.
SpongeBob is a sensory seeker - he loves loud, unconventional noises, sights and sensations, while Squidward is more sensory-averse.
SpongeBob wants to be social, but doesn't really know how to fit the social expectations a lot of people have - he's unconventionally social, like many extroverted autistics. Squidward is a clear introvert.
SpongeBob and Squidward's positions at the Krusty Krab also say a lot - SpongeBob is mostly alone in a place where he can use his skills best, and only interacts with people briefly, such as when delivering people's orders, while Squidward is constantly dealing with people, which can drain your social battery.
Squidward also seems to care a lot about image - he presents himself as a sophisticated listener of "real" music, though we've seen him enjoy pop and disco as well - while SpongeBob doesn't let any of that bother him.

spongebob is an incredibly neurodivergent coded character so theres a ton of examples to choose from, but one episode that stuck out to me the most with demonstrating this is the one where squidward wants to make the krusty krab fancy. squidward gives spongebob a fine dining book and spongebob is instructed to throw everything out of his brain that isnt fine dining. at first spongebob was absolutely losing his shit because hes only specialized in burger flipping but then he somehow manages to throw all of his previous information out in exchange for memorizing and executing everything in the book perfectly. this is when spongebob squarepants fucking carries the entire operation through his decorative skills and fine dining expertise but then completely fumbles when asked the simple question of what his name is since he literally discarded everything that wasnt related to fine dining. at that moment all i could think is that hes literally just like me. i love spongebob so much and i still watch it every single night at my big age.

The itinerary is so relatable. I get so stressed out when someone says "let's go somewhere" but there's no plan-- like nah, if I'm gonna just wing it I'd rather wing it at home, not in front of a bunch of strangers + at least one person I'm trying to give a good impression to. I got to take my own solitary vacation for the first time ever this year, and it was just so nice. I didn't have things planned to the exact minute, but I did know what I wanted to do, kept a list of when things were available, and kept my hotel room as my 'base of operations' whenever I got overwhelmed.

I don't think SpongeBob is intentionally autism coded I think he is based largely on the mannerisms and personality of his creator who I believe was autistic and just organically made SpongeBob autistic without meaning too I also believe that he designed SpongeBob so particularly that it would be very jaring to have him behave in a non autistic manner and incredibly easy to write an appropriately consistent reaction for any given situation

I wasn't diagnosed for a very long time because I have both autism and ADHD, and the ADHD covers up the surface-level autism stereotypes and such that people are looking for. Like, I don't see chaos as a bad thing, I tend to feel relief in it in that I can relinquish any need to control things, and even as an opportunity to find new interesting things to observe.

  • @zee1010
    @zee1010 Před 5 měsíci +71

YES!!! SpongeBob is so autistic-coded to me and has always been. (Well, I can say that now that I have the language for it; I wasn't diagnosed as a child.) But I always saw myself in and as SpongeBob with such a naturalness. Whenever an episode came on on TV, I was so happy and excited because it was like watching myself do really fun stuff in a fantasy world!
So, as I grew up, I found it strange when I became aware that adults and even peers my age didn't relate to SpongeBob that much (anymore). As humans, but especially as children, we have a tendency to believe that everyone is like us. In fact, *because* a fictional character like SpongeBob existed and was popular, I thought he must be representing so many more people than just me - even as a teenager and adult lol!
Sometimes I get sad over the fact that many neurotypical people don't like us because of the way we are. A beautiful thing that SpongeBob shows us, however, is that he still has friends and is loved and missed, no matter how annoying they may find him at times. He's okay the way he is and worthy of love just the way he is! And so am I. So are you, who is reading this, too.

  • @promisemochi

can i talk about TV shows in general as an autistic person? they'd bring me such comfort and were and still are my special interest. i remember being in love with the show 7th heaven as a kid. i'd have to watch it every afternoon. i was a lonely little only child (with undiagnosed - at the time - autism) and seeing the big family of kids just was comforting. i remember we were going on vacation for a week and i wouldn't be able to watch it. so i printed out like dozens of pages off of whatever character wiki was around at the time, for each of my favorite characters that i could "flip through" when i'd miss them. looking back on that i'm like "oh girl....the 'tism was real' lol it still is like this, but now there's fandom and blogs and fanfic i can pour my special interest love into for my various shows and fandoms today. but yeah, television and characters on screen have always, always been huge comforts of mine. sponge bob included. i remember "missing him" when i wouldn't be able to watch him. it was like he was this little friend on my TV as a kid. wow this comment makes me realize how badly i wish i could give baby-me a hug lol

The ending is bittersweet to me, because while Patrick is praising him for being a good host, he's also saying that, whatever made the party good, Spongebob should do it again. The whole night, Spongebob was blocked from his own party by various means, "allowing" everyone else to have a good time. I feel like it implies that the reason Spongebob's party was a hit was because HE wasn't there. Paired with the unfortunate episode that outright states that Bikini Bottom has a whole day dedicated to avoiding him, it feels pretty cruel. Idk, maybe it's just me and I know it's just a cartoon, but I feel for him.
On a side note, this reminds me of the times I looked up on the internet how to throw a decent party at my own house, each party feeling underwhelming and like a failure to me, but was decent enough to my family and friends who attended. Huh... always thought myself a Squidward, but maybe I really am a Spongebob after all ☺

It was a little bit uncomfortable to watch this video because I could never get into SpongeBob like everyone else in my generation did because the voices feel bad in my ears and on my skin.... I can't remember the word for that right now. I'm glad I pushed through it because that was cute and relatable and cathartic!! I think if I could eat the voices I would like SpongeBob a lot. I DO remember Sandy's song though, cuz I'm from Texas and I related to her a lot.... 😅 My younger sisters used to watch the DVD on repeat as they slept and for a few months in highschool my grades dropped significantly because I couldn't sleep because they'd wake up and cry if I turned it off and ther wasn't room for me to sleep anywhere else 😅 that may also contribute to the irritation..... But now I want to watch more but I don't want to feel sticky spikey

I can certainly recall (circa 1963/4), as an eight- or nine-year-old boy, greeting my married sister and her newish husband (who regularly came to our family home for Sunday night dinner) at our front door, dressed in a yachting skipper-type cap and dispensing handwritten (by me, of course) menus for that particular night's fare, welcoming them to the "Star Restaurant". It all sounds so silly, now that this Spongebob episode triggered the memory. But I never went as far as to supply conversation-starter prompt cards.
I also remember my brother-in-law giggling at "The Flintstones", which made me think: "What? NO! This is a cartoon ... for kids ... like ME!" More fool me, as it contained so much anachronistic parody and marital in-jokes that went totally over my head.

Tom Kenny himself actually responded to people voicing their thoughts about SpongeBob being autistic. I don't remember if he actually agreed or not, I would have to look it up again. But he was very supportive in people's head cannons that SpongeBob is autistic and he can also see it. He can understand that, which is really nice because not many voice actors or actors or directors or writers, what have you will, actually agree with and be so open and supportive of that idea. for example, Benedict Cumberbatch in his role as sherlock, was very against the idea that people had cannon his character as autistic and he was very insulted by that.

So I make multiple plans, and if one falls through, i have a second or even third plan that is more closely aligned.

It sucks when you have autism and you have anxiety so when the plans don’t come to fruition, I personally would get anxious because I was tired of being in the house all the time I wanted to go out and do stuff and then somebody told me that they would take me to go and do stuff and they never took me. To get my hopes up and then be anxious about staying in the same place all day is not a good feeling. Even if I went outside it was just the same old neighborhood, unless I went further away but I didn’t have a car so it’s not like I could go far. There wasn’t anything to do in my town so I had to depend on family with cars to take me out to have fun and other places like to the fair every summer, for example.

gotta love car centric american urban planning "yeah we could build a nice community but this strip mall makes me a hell of a lot more money"
atleast some of the 1980s and before houses are nice, some of those suburban office parks too but just the buildings themselves, not the big useless parking lots

Spongebob is so obviously Autistic coded. I always enjoyed watching Spongebob growing up and I still do now. I honestly relate to Autistic Coded characters since I'm Autistic myself and it's more entertaining to watch.
And I never considered it that this episode is the most Autistic coded one ever. Looking at how Spongebob takes advice from a planning kit, this is something an Autistic would do. Like writing an entire schedule for the party and sticking it as often as possible. Also the anxiety that goes on in the episode when things don't go as planned.

i never thought about spongebob being autistic coded and now i view him in a whole new light and i LOVE IT
This also unlocked a memory of me basically having a meltdown at my own birthday party when i was 9. The theme was Mario Party and i planned a bunch of real life versions of mini games to play. But they either didn’t go as planned, people weren’t interested, or just didn’t understand how to play because none of them had every single in-game mechanic memorized like my autistic ass did.
I still find myself getting upset when social gatherings i host don’t go how i envisioned in my head, even if everyone is clearly having fun! I’ve learned to roll with it and i am much less stressed about them haha

This video has opened my eyes and now I really don’t know how to feel. I thought I was understanding to my friend’s undiagnosed autism. I would try to keep my voice down even though I’m a naturally loud person, I would turn the music down in the car. But one thing I couldn’t get over was the essentially controlling factor of it. And in the end our friendship ended over the fact that I was late. Mind you I was trying my absolute hardest, knowing how she is. It was like no matter how much I tried to please her it didn’t matter because I couldn’t meet her demands. She immediately jumped to calling me inconsiderate. It’s like she had no empathy for me and anything I could be going through. I gave her a week to come to her senses, but she refused to apologize or just even see my side. (There is way more to the story, but in short I had felt an apology was warranted). I just felt like coming for my character was not necessary when I had been trying to accommodate her the entire morning. I’m still confused if I was the asshole, either way we clearly are not compatible and breaking the friendship off or taking a break was probably the best option in the end.

Once I arrived hours late to my own birthday party because I was stuck on a train. When I finally arrived my friends thought it was funny and said 'Relax , it doesn't matter that you didn't prepare any of the food or drinks'. They didn't realize that it was a nightmare for me (like arriving for an exam unprepared). My stress level never went down the whole night. The others seemed like they enjoyed themselves but I was so relieved when everyone left. Never organized a birthday party since😅

I just wanted to say that your a huge reason why I’m confidently in the process of getting diagnosed rn. I didn’t know that I would be able to relate to anyone ever as much as I do to you. Growing up in the Bay Area as a immigrant child and a very high-masking female with ADHD and undiagnosed autism is not so common an experience so I’m so happy you share your similar story. Without your channel I don’t think I would have had the knowledge to seek a diagnosis and would have continued to be confused, alienated, and blaming myself. Thankfully I’m now in an industry and culture now that is not as harsh on autistics as what I experienced before in the US, and I have super cool autistic friends😊 I feel like my self-acceptance work is just beginning but I’m so happy I have your channel to support me❤️❤️ Thank you

4:00 see my thing is I struggle to cope with when a schedule doesnt go to plan so I kind of gave up on it a long time ago. I have recently tried to get back into scheduling though and im just trying to figure out what balance works for me.
5:00 I get that everyone is different but my kinda vibe is if this is the way that everyone else does it, just things spontaneously happening, im ok with giving up that feeling of control and just going with the flow.
6:12 one thing im always doing is every time I start some form of regular event, the first time im usually staring at the clock, taking a mental note of how long it takes everyone to actually get there. Because it is consistent, or at least, consistent enough that things actually get started around about the same amount of delay each time.
8:52 no comment on the fact Spongebob just cut Squidwards cables to make him come to the party?
15:37 man I love the comedy in this show. The fact he said "I dont even know how that happened"
