70mai Dash Cam Pro Internal Battery Replacement

  • The internal lithium-ion battery in the 70mai Dash Cam Pro will only last 1-2 years. In this video I will demonstrate how to replace it, which is actually very straightforward, and I will also discuss replacement batteries. The suggestions I have seen on-line won't work because the battery is a special type with three wires and a connector.
    The only place I have found a direct replacement is Shopee. If you can order through Shopee in your country, the link to the product I ordered is as follows (Nirin Shop):
    shopee.co.th/แ...
    I haven't been able to find a direct replacement anywhere else. ALI Express have something similar with three wires and a connector, but the wires are a different colour and look shorter. Also, the connector may not fit. Please let me know if you find another source for replacements and I will add the link here.
    This isn't good customer service from the manufacturer. I believe that lots of 70mai Pro dash cams were sold and now many will require replacement batteries. Replacements, therefore, should be easy to find - but they aren't. What are people supposed to do when their battery expires?

    Thanks for the video!
    I didn't find the replacement, so I removed the protection from the existing battery and used it on a new 14500 cell. It is a protection circuit that includes an NTC (third white wire) for temperature protection. The original battery is in a package identical to electrolytic capacitors, so you have to desolder it from the pins and use it with wires or nickel straps on the new battery. It takes some fine work, but if you can't buy it locally and you need it, it works.

      Well done! As you say, if you can't find a replacement you need to do it yourself, but it's a bit of a fiddly job. Where I am in Thailand replacements have become easier to find. Previously, I could only find them on Shopee but they're now on Lazada too. I'm impressed that that you did it, but it sounds as if you have some experience of working with electronics.

      There are lots more. I'm not sure why you can't find them. The Lazada search engine isn't good. Sometimes I can see things on the app, but using the same search argument on the website gives no results.
      Sometimes I can only find things by typing in Thai, and often if you search in Thai you find cheaper prices. Thais love charging farangs more than locals.
      As is usual with Lazada, prices of the exact same products vary wildly. The cheapest is Bt228 and the most expensive is Bt848 for the same thing.

    Helpful video. However, know that the a800s (4K) is slightly different. I ended up ordering the batteries from Ali Express. Now for the fun part. The battery was correct, however the connection plug was different. I removed the OEM battery connection board (slowly pry it off) removed the outer heat shrink on the battery. Unsoldered the pigtail on the new battery, tinned the wires and soldered the original connection board to the new battery. New heat shrink, and back together it went. Seems to work. Hope my explanation is helpful. And thank you for the video. That made taking the camera apart easy

    I opened it and measured the voltage. There are 3,85 V on baterry terminals when camera says "battery low". At 3,85V the battery has aprrox. 65-70% energy left. So, in my case it is a problem of circuit board tunning, not a battery problem. I had to dyi another (external) battery in parallel with the original one. They charge together and discharge together. Thankfully it's a standard 18650 battery, can be found in laptop batteries, cordless drills, etc.. If you want to replace it for cheap, it might be possible to remove the wires from the old battery and solder to the salvaged one yourself, without having to buy a replacement. Be careul soldering to the battery directly, since it can damage it. And do not short the contacts, it can make a small fire

    Hi Phil. Thanks very much for doing this video. In one of your video you mentioned that your 70Mai pro is plug to the cigar lighter. I wondered if you had used the wires sold by 70Mai which have 3 wires - one to "the always on" , the other to the "Acc" of the fuse box - would this 3 wires buck converter (I think they also called it "24 Hours Parking Monitoring Vehicle Step-down Line") enable us to eliminate the change of battery i.e. just leave the weak battery inside but not have to change it. I have seen a video that this dashcam can be run with the battery taken out but I don't mind leaving the bad one inside as without a battery I don't know what is the long term effect on the dashcam. Hope to have your input. Kind regards.

      I just have my camera attached to a 12v outlet (cigar lighter) that is always live. I don't have the hardwire kit, but it is probably a good idea. I'm not sure about your question. With my set up I have to turn the camera on and off manually using a rocker switch that I wired in, but it isn't ideal. When my battery was weak and I turned the camera off I had to reset the time and date every time. It's quite possible that with the hardwire kit you can use the camera with a weak internal battery, or even without a battery. However, I'm not sure. The other advantage of the hardwire kit is that it monitors the car battery voltage and turns off parking surveillance before the battery gets too weak to start the car. I didn't like 70mai's decision to disable parking surveillance unless you use their hardwire kit, but these kits do make sense.

      I'm afraid I don't know anything about the hardwire kit. I have my camera plugged into an outlet that is always live even with the ignition off and it works fine. Even if I want to use parking surveillance (which I don't usually bother with) I still can because I'm using old firmware. More recent firmware will only allow you to use parking surveillance if you have a hardwire kit.
      Regarding your problems, you probably need a multimeter and someone who understands a bit about electronics. You're probably right that there are fuses involved. Also, I believe, the hardwire kit monitors the voltage and turns power off if voltage is low so that the car battery won't be depleted. Possibly this part of the circuit has a fault and it is turning off power when it shouldn't. Good luck!

      The voice notifications are mainly for ADAS. If you turn off ADAS (or if you don't have a GPS module and therefore don't have ADAS) you won't hear the ADAS warnings - lane departure, beware of the vehicle ahead, and the car in front has moved when in traffic.
      There are some other voice notifications, but only to confirm an action. When you take a photo it says 'Photo taken' and when you record an emergency video it confirms this. It doesn't say anything if you don't do anything.
      Unless a recent firmware update has appeared that allows voice notifications to be turned off, I am not aware that they can be turned off. You can just limit them by turning off ADAS, but if you want ADAS you have to have voice notifications.

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  Před 4 měsíci +1

      Hardwire kits allow parking surveillance to be used when the ignition is off. Therefore, they supply voltage all the time. Therefore, I guess that you don't need an internal battery. The battery is used to store the time, date and set up information when the dash cam doesn't have an external electricity supply. I'm not completely sure about this, but as your hardwire kit is always supplying electricity, I don't think you need an internal battery. Best to ask elsewhere, though, as I may be wrong.

      It saves the date and time, plus the settings you choose. Without the internal battery connected, every time you turn on the camera it will have the factory settings and the date and time will be wrong. I had a problem with my car being towed and the camera only recorded approximately 13 minutes of video and the battery was exhausted."
      That's right. The internal battery is only rated at 500mAh and will only record video for a short time. According to some comments I have received, people have been using power banks to power the dash cam when the ignition is off. However, another person warned about using these in hot environments, such as cars parked in hot sun. The other question is whether you can upgrade the internal battery, but I don't know. The internal battery looks like a Li-ion type 18650 and has a capacity of 500mAh. On the Internet you can find this type of battery (3.7v) with a capacity of 2200mAh. The one I found didn't have a model number and the same batteries often have different model numbers. It seems to resemble a 18650 type battery. Here's the one I found at Shopee: shopee.co.th/แบตเตอรี่สำหรับเปลี่ยนกล้อง-70mai-PRO-i.24406465.7420668546

      @@ronald2029 Looks good! I know that with camera batteries the same battery will be sold with lots of different model numbers. When I Googled HMC1450 just now I saw some batteries that have the three-wire connector and some that don't. If it's just the battery with two posts it is possible to attach the old PCB and connector. I haven't done this myself, but other people have.

    I have the same brand and I live in Iraq and the temperature can reach 60 inside the car when it’s parked outside. I’m afraid that it would explode.

      I live in southern Thailand. The outdoor temperature is sometimes +40C. I haven't checked inside the car, but probably +50C. I've been using the camera for several years and have not experienced any heat related issues. That's all I can say.

    really wish it has a large capacitor instead of a battery...

      @PhilUKNet  Před 3 lety

      I've heard this from other people as well, especially those who live in hot countries such as Australia. There are several things that could be improved with the Pro, but 70mai only seem to be interested in releasing and selling new products, not improving existing products. With a lot of demand for capacitors instead of batteries I wouldn't be surprised if 70mai release a new camera with a capacitor.

    It seems that 70mai company is doing this on purpose, pushing people to buy their newer model or so... Else it would be unrealistic to think that the maintenance aspect was missed in their business strategy / model... unfortunately, it's a good quality product with a greedy type of management...

    • @PhilUKNet
      @PhilUKNet  Před 4 lety +1

      I think you're right. The advertising blurb for the new 4k cam is all about offering the same features as other cams for a much lower price. Bring out a new product, sell as many as possible, bring out another new model, rinse and repeat. Don't provide customer service for existing products. I've had problems with the firmware update process and it is very difficult to find replacement batteries for the 70mai Pro. It's a shame, but it's the business model they have chosen.

      @@PhilUKNet I was searching and thinking about getting the new 4K 70Mai A800, but now that I see your video about their batteries, i am confused :( . Can an external battery like the Cellink NEO Battery Pack be an option to buy for the A800? Instead of replacing every year or two! What you think?. My other questions is: can the 70Mai A800 survive extreme heat in Texas? Does it have a filter available anywhere? Does it have active motion detection in parking mode? Thanks in advance

      @@seekfactsnotfiction9056 I don't have the 4k version, but I have watched a review. Obviously, the camera is different but the functionality (ADAS, parking surveillance) looks the same. The 4k version doesn't have voice control. Also, I think the battery is the same. You can use an external power bank. I've received quite a few comments from people who have done that.

      @PhilUKNet  Před 3 lety

      I don't know. Is it the internal battery that needs replacing or is there no power when the power cord is plugged in? If the former, you can get replacement batteries. If the latter, then there must be a fault. If you can't fix the fault then you will probably need to buy a new camera.
