I'm A Member of the Midnight Crew so I think it's the same for the sauce, it's just a joke, of course it is (as Rick and Morty is a commedy), and, even though it is funny to imagine what all this should mean in the series, it's a bit stupid

Dont agree with this argument. If nothing has meaning and one doesnt chicken out with meaning the only thing left is basic gratificatiin (sex, drugs alcohol, pleasure) in short endorphins. For Rick the univers becoms a playground to get gratification. The sezchuan sauce explains this perfectly. Why?
      1. It is food - which is a instant gratification
      2. It is not a drug which would achieve the same effect (two electrodes in the brain and the pleasure would cancle out everything else. BUT
      3. Rick doesnt take this road which implies that the how is important for him which comes to point 4
      4. He needs to validate his own worth the not existence of the sezchuan sauce in all universes is a challange to himself a seek for push himselfe.
      5. At the marriage we see Rick is still capable of emotion and openung up so the last question is.
      6. Is the seek for challanges a way for Rick to dull himself from the existencial crises or is it a need that is something more (retribution? Validation?)

I was thinking that the obsession with the sauce has nothing to do with the plot of the show in the slightest. It is very possible that it was and is being used to measure the influence the show has on its audience. the sauce would be virtually not spoken about by a single person until the episode came out, so the creators could use this perfect metric to determine the shows influence

Rick is a god in his world and the worlds he has created (season 2, Ep 6), but he realizes he is in a tv show. If he can bring back the Szechuan Sauce in our timeline, he will have literally, singlehandedly affected our reality. That's why the sauce is his "one-armed man"
Imagine if the world we live in were a simulation, and we did something to affect the world that houses our simulation; that would be a giant middle finger to our creators and it would, in a sense, be proof that we do exist.

His theory makes perfect sense aside from the fact he is applying it to a TV show made by people from the real world.
You are right in the fact it's a TV show and not a simulation, so it would be Dan Harmon & Co making the change and not a simulated being.
But if you apply his theory to the whole "We are living in a simulation" idea, it makes perfect sense.

I think you seriously overestimate how honest both Rick himself and the show overall are, because they really aren't. The episode was far more ambiguious than you suggest: did Rick save Summer and Morty beause he loves them or because he needed them for Beth? Why does he care about Beth at all then? Did Rick give himself up for the family and make the plan from insdie the prison or was it all planned all along? If Rick does not care about his grandchildren at all, why did he sacrifice himself for Morty in the first episode of the second season? None of the things Rick says can be trusted. I think Rick himself sees the world as meaningless, but usually cannot quite bring himself to live up to it. He still has morals and that is why he sacrificed himself for Morty. He wants to convince himself that he's only doing in for the sauce or whatever crazy idea he has, but in reality Dostoevsky's ethics tend to take over him. The universe may not suggest any meaning, but that does not mean Rick can honestly belive that himself. He wants to, probably but he can't seem to be able to do it.

This is true. There are many small examples in the show where Rick acts in a kind way despite himself, especially when he doesn't need to do so. Just off the top of my head, the episode where Rick buys Morty the sex doll because Morty says it "looks cool." He didn't need to do that, and in fact, it potentially put him at risk with Beth, the matriarch of the household (and the person that ensures he has a place to live that provides him with the company of others, something he desperately needs, despite his repeated attempts to remain aloof). His relationship with Bird Person is also indicative of a deeper desire for meaning (the two of them fight in the name of freedom against the galactic government) and the value he placed on that relationship is obvious to the viewer, especially after Bird Person is killed.
Rick is a tortured soul, grappling with the knowledge that there is no inherent meaning in the universe, and that caring about others often leads to pain and is usually not worth the trouble, while still desiring, deep down, companionship and meaning in life. He is deeply cynical and calculating, but he doesn't *want* to be cynical and he is only calculating because it helps him survive. He is an anarchist, not because he is an ideologue, but because he has no respect for authority (Rick is arguably the smartest man in the galaxy, after all; he is powerful beyond reckoning because of his level of knowledge and ingenuity) and because he enjoys his freedom to experience and experiment in the multiverse. One could argue that it is the journey, the "adventure," that gives his life meaning, and good adventures always have conflict.
What I'm trying to say here is that actions speak louder than words, especially in *this* show, and Rick's actions give the lie to his words on many occasions. I am agreeing with you in that his words cannot be trusted, but I would also add that he is an agent of chaos, a Nietzschean overman at war with those who would attempt to control and/or contain him, but that this fact, the fact that he is a bit of a demigod, does not make him devoid of the human desires for meaning and deep relationships. He is, begrudgingly, as you argue, more like Dostoyevsky than he is like Camus.
And that's actually a good thing. Fuck Camus and his "cooler-than-thou, seen-it-all" bullshit pretense. He was human, just like the rest of us, and every human living desires meaning; no-one wants to simply "exist" when there is a way to be more. That is a big part of what separates us from other animals; mere survival is not enough. We need more. Otherwise, why act at all? Why continue to exist if there is never any possibility of creating or finding meaning?

Maybe, the origin-story wasn't completely made up (because, y'know, the best stories contain a little bit of truth) and the szechuan sauce also reminds Rick of the time, before he started travelling different dimensions (and becoming an "unfeeling ghost", as he puts it).

if you work hard to obtain something, it has special meaning and you will enjoy it infinitely more than someone who has everything thing they want giving to them without any effort whatsoever. ... why are Lobsters and Caviar considered a delicacy when they are just Sea Bugs and Fish Eggs?, why do hipsters collect old vinyl records and record players when you can download MP3s?, why do people restore antiques when they could just order furniture from IKEA?, its because when something is rare and limited supply, it artificially inflates the perceived value of the thing. the meaning is in the journey to obtain it, not the actual thing itself.

Based on the fact that he considered the idea of being a normal caring person at the wedding, it seems fairly obvious that Rick is falling back into absurdist nihilism as a defense mechanism for his trauma. Rick is a man so battered psychologically, he's constructed an entire absurdist motivation as to why he went back to save the Morty and Summer he had before, instead of easily replacing them.
Rick's nihilism is a front. His refusal to accept meaning isn't a sign of enlightenment, and certainly not 'refusing to chicken out'. In fact, it's his ultimate display of cowardice. He isn't doing it because it makes sense, he's doing it because it hurts less. But the fact that he decided to stay in that universe at all instead of hopping to another one with a recently dead Rick and a divorced Beth and Jerry to start all over again only proves he's hiding his true emotions, because that's what damaged people do. Hell, the fact that he feels the need to stay with his biological family at all is a sign that he's lying to himself. He's desperate for meaning. Even if it is rooted in gaining a sense of control.

Naveen Shekhar Nihilism might make logical sense, but it's definitely not the core of Rick's worldview and we have several on-screen examples of familial empathy on Rick's part to prove that. If Jared wanted to make a video discussing these concepts at length, he could just as easily have pointed out that Rick is still incapable of fully committing to his supposed nihilism, and is, in fact, a hypocrite. I don't fault the effort to go into detail about the philosophy R&M deals with, I just want to make sure we don't overlook the subtext of the episode with regards to Rick's character in order to do so.

the reality is that rick needs to appear human at times so we the viewer actually care about his character. Whether he cares or not is never fully stated to keep us on our toes. By dropping hints that, yes he does give a shit, compels us to root for him through out the show. Instead of viewing him as a heartless borderline abusive mad scientist who doesn't care what so ever.
also morty was (for the most part) ok. he hadn't sustained any physical injuries that threatened his health and if anything the phycological damage could have been used to make him even more dependant on rick.

This video is true, except for the fact that rick does care about morty. There has been 3 different cases of this happening through out the show. First was when morty was almost raped by the jelly bean and rick opened up a portal just to kill the guy. Second was when their time was fucked up and rick sacrificed himself to save morty (and it didnt create another timeline). Last was when rick was accused of killing other ricks and when evil rick captured real rick and was showing him real rick's memories of morty. Those memories made rick cry.

  • @spaceman607
    @spaceman607 Před 4 lety +7

Rick does love his family members, he just keeps finding new ways of bypassing actually having to admit it. Because if he admits it, he'll consider himself just as flawed as other mortals.

    • @LucianDevine
      @LucianDevine Před rokem +1

And those loved ones could potentially be captured and used as leverage against him like one of the council Ricks tried in this very episode. Rick C137 was even able to convince the council Rick that he didn't care, even though council Rick knows he's a rogue Rick, and if he can even convince a council Rick that it's not worth capturing his family and using them as leverage then he can pretty much convince anyone of it.
So every new way Rick C137 finds to act like he doesn't care about his family is just his way of showing them just how much he cares!

  • @SentDirectlyToDaSoul
    @SentDirectlyToDaSoul Před 7 lety +209

You're ignoring evidence from the show that implies this is a Rick who at some point has meaningfully cared (which is 100% a Rick that must exist in infinite timelines), and probably still does, despite his vain attempts at forcing the people/aliens/etcs around him to perceive that he doesn't. I don't think our Rick is an absurdist champion, devising meaning to set up a joke about its meaninglessness. I think our Rick is actually one of the single most human characters in the show, more of an absurdist hero, one who suffers from the debilitating effects of recognizing the meaninglessness of the universe but being unable to break away from it; not necessarily trying to arbitrarily create more though. This is why he is in pain, hence the crying for /his/ Morty (not ours, presumably) in the ep. with the evil Morty and the inclination towards suicide, though woefully unable to follow through, from losing Unity. More on topic, the szechuan sauce thing could just potentially be because our Rick's reality coincides with the reality wherein he must (100%) be obsessed with the sauce, although as someone else in the comments pointed out, he should just go to a reality where it is still (again, 100%) being served. Can't wait to see where they go with this. I think the Rick and Morty meta philosophy is to point out the uselessness of philosophy considering infinite permutations of our universe, and the vanity in trying to find its philosophy. Rick and Morty is one of the most human shows I've ever seen. But, hey, that's just a theory, a meta-rick-szechuan-and-morty theory (thanks for reading)

On the one hand, sure. On the other hand... what about when Rick gave Morty his time-fixing collar and was ready to float endlessly out of time to get Morty back to his own life?
Also, Rick's original plan in the Rickshank redemption was to just collapse the government, only when seal team rick messed it up he changed his plan to include saving Morty and Summers, so... would Beth have accepted him if he came back after collapsing the government, without having to save Morty and Summers? And of course, at the wedding he DID open up, and he DID get pretty upset over the death of his friend. So i really don't think Rick does not care at all about the people around him... he's still human. So what would that mean in this philosophy? Will he eventually pretend there is meaning to life like most other people, or is it possible to love even when you know it is pointless and absurd?

Very interesting, but I feel Rick actually does care about his family and some other things in the multiverse, and his speech to Morty about the Mulan sauce was an attempt to convince Morty, and himself, otherwise. Notice that he tells Morty about the "dead family" backstory when Morty had no idea what he was referring to; his origin story might not be 100% fake after all, and he's just trying to convince himself and others that he is a complete nihilist. At least that's how I see things.

I think a better read is Rick is motivated by several things, some contradictory (like everyone else), and navigating that is the real absurdity.
It is completely possible to care about family or whatever to some degree and in the same breath long for the abyss.
In a sense the lucid indifference is a poisoned fruit in that breaking tradition becomes a tradition in itself, belief in the absurd is still a belief, and even the absurd hero is divorced from the universe, not believing he is absurd himself.
Nope, the the real absurdist position is to jump headlong into the abyss a la the theist existentialists and do something like work for the government as that is the most pointless endeavor in the known universe.

Sure, it currently is, but I don't believe we can confidently claim an absurdist viewpoint before seeing what happens next. I would say that "caring" is probably not the right word, but he wants to be around them(especially Morty, the closest thing he has to a Son)
you could speculate that being around the people that are the closest to you (biologically/family)

      Katie H : Being an absurdist doesn't mean you can't enjoy things/life/others.
Absurdists accept that things do not have an inherit meaning/ absolute & accept the absurdity that it is part of human nature to look for meaning (where there inevitably is none.)
-Camus says "you must imagine sisyphus as happy" (the man pushing the boulder only to have it roll back down hill & cause him to start this process over again for all eternity.)
-the absurdist believes questioning one's meaning should not lead to their physical suicide or "philosophical suicide" which is believing in religion as a "leap of faith" in order to find meaning in the meaningless or as a way to willfully ignore the absurd nature of existence.
-The absurdist must accept & then revolt against his own absurd nature, stay alive, and search for meaning in their own way knowing they probably won't find any or if they do that any meaning found is not inherit, so others will not have the same meaning on it. (the Absurd hero)
-Camus had a daughter who he loved. Rick has a daughter he loves (beth) as well as her child (morty.)
-Rick's quest for meaning motivates him to become the patriarch of his family even if it means destroying the whole government & now he is also motivated by his 9 season quest to bring back the Mulan sauce.(which has no inherit meaning to all people but does have meaning to rick as an absurd hero who will probably find no meaning in the sauce but find meaning in his family & position in said family.

(actually looked It up.It is on google to make)
Rick's whole mission was to wipe out the council of ricks and the GF when they become intertwined with him.
Both are extremes and actual Mirrors of what this existentialism can lead to. the GF will do not nothing unless they are paid and everything is centered around money and the Ricks only care for their safety hiding in a multidimensional Irony tower as they more or less heard Mortie's like cattle to be given to a Rick.
The reason is simple,GF are more or less gonna make earth a hellhole. And The Ricks no matter what. Will come looking for Rick or even take his Morty.
Second, they have already jumped demissions once. And not to a timline with a living Rick and Morty, but right when they die. Filling in the void that would of been caused. The Timeline they left is still around. With that Jerry,Beth and Summer still in a Normbrug world with a normbrug rick and Morty in It now.
Also,If his goal is ultimate "nothing matters but fucking with everything". He would have already left and like brained controlled Morty or someshit. He would not care for aprroval,What's Jerry gonna do? Build a dimissonal jumping device?
I think the truth is this,Rick and Morty is more Character driven then world driven. So,you have to read character motives and not the symbolism of their talk. It is more "why on earth would they lie?" vs "What is the meaning of the lie?"
The real question however is this. How much of his past is actually a lie and how much is truth?

I can't believe you bought the Szechuan sauce lie. just because Rick says something does not mean it's true. he genuinely CARES for Morty and Summer, but he has lost so much it profoundly scares him to be close to anyone. and the one time he tries Tammy kills Birdperson, his best friend.
Ranting and raving at Morty in the end, taking credit for getting Jerry out of the house, all that is just Rick being opportunistic, and scared.

I disagree with the conclusion, I think the show is using the Szechuan Sauce to show what Rick really cares about, which was Morty. When the show was being made in 2012 and Morty is 14 then that means Morty might've been born in 1998, if so then that could mean that Rick is saying in a very crazy way he loves Morty because the happiest and most obsessed day of his life was when Morty was born. I think it is something to that.

      Sugar does cause cancer.
Sugar is one of the substances that allows the continuation of mitosis as a necessary ingredient in human functionality, and thus through means, propagates cancer. It just causes it as much as anything we eat, breath, and radiation poisoning we get standing in front of a microwave. Just not in the way we think.

    • @crispybacon4240
      @crispybacon4240 Před 7 lety +22

+furyberserk Microwave ovens do not give you radiation poisoning. The mesh is small enough to block microwaves like a Faraday cage, and failing that, microwaves are not a form of high energy "ionising radiation" such as Xrays or gamma rays, and as such will not strip electrons from your atoms, turning them into ions and potentially damaging your DNA, leading to radiation poisoning and cancer. _Visible light_ is a form of radiation, it's all part of the electromagnetic spectrum, but will not give you cancer.

I'm not sold on Rick's final speech about the sauce. Rick frequently goes out of his way to save Morty and/or Summer, so the idea that he only did it so that Beth would take him back is doubtful. Also, his interest in returning to Beth implies a meaningful attachment, one he very much does not focus on. I posit that this is Rick fighting the meaning that had crept into his life over the past two seasons. At the end of season 2 he was legitimately in a vulnerable place of purpose and it was immediately exploited by Tammy. He seemed content to live with his family on a distant planet, but upon realizing he had caused them to suffer, he adopted a more personally dangerous plan that would ensure a better life for his family regardless of his success or failure. That being said, he is extremely uncomfortable to reveal his vulnerability particularly after the red wedding and he finds an alternative absurd explanation to trick his family and possibly himself with. I believe that Rick is suffering from what all nihilists do, that meaning naturally sneaks into their lives and motivations. He is stuck in a struggle between his natural attachment to his family, and his belief that life is purposeless. Throughout a lot of the show Rick flips between acceptance and rejection of meaning. My favorite example is the first episode of season two where he prays to God, then immediately denies him. He actually occasionally mentions God as though he exists while most often disregarding the possibility, it certainly seems purposefully inconsistent. To summarize, Rick doesn't actively believe in meaning but accidentally finds meaning throughout life, he struggles against what he naturally gains.

If he doesn't inspire any empathy it's just going to be repeating "life is meaningless so I can be an asshole" for a season. Your version is much more compelling.

He is a dimension traveler aware that he is in a cartoon. This is just him trying to perpetuate his existence without being too obvious so it breaks the effect (but also hinting at it). He is trying to save the entirety of existence. He is the ultimate hero.

I get the existential philosophical messages in Rick and Morty, however I think it's a stretch to say that we were looking for the "meaning of life" in wanting to believe in Rick's humanity. I think the part in us wanting to believe that rick is not a sociopath is because humans are empathetic, and social creatures, we look for faces, we give emotions and human characteristics to anything from our smartphones to our dogs and cats. We just want to believe that people are human, especially if they're dropping hints that they are, like Rick has done. That's why we're so fascinated by sociopaths.

I also suspect that Rick Sanchez finds his life meaningless, because he is aware that he is a character in an Adult swim show, and his life is a series of set ups for absurd humour, to entertain people he does not know by killing imaginary people or universes, in weird ways.
There was an entire show dedicated to one Rick blowing up parrallel universes, while other Ricks try to figure out why their universes kept exploding around them at random.

The Szechuan Sauce represents the fact that Rick cannot travel through time. BUT from the memory of the creation of the portal gun the apple comes out rotten, maybe he cannot remember how he made the accidental gun. I think Rick is chasing something which he associates the sauce with, such as the time period when he loved his wife and his daughter was still an innocent depending little girl. I think he wants to live in that time period in the past for the rest of his life. Rick wants to control time.

This is, by far, the most intelligent breakdown of Szechuan sauce I have ever seen. Well done.
Now if you'll excuse me I need to go to a place where they sell McNuggests and demand Szechuan sauce.

Lol I was just talking to my friend about the difference between Aang and Korra in terms of psychological health and mental stability. About how Aang is heavily influenced by eastern philosophy and has already achieved a form of enlightenment similar to that achieved by tibetan buddhists even though he is only twelve years old. I'd love to just see a wisecrack edition of eastern philosophies and the importance of their teachings towards psychological health and stability. We don't see much emphasis on these sort of teachings in the west.

And here's why I think Rick *DOES* care about his family:
If there's an infinite amount of universes why did rick go through all that hustle of saving Summer and Morty if he could have just taken another universe? I mean it seems pointless to go through the harder way when there's an easy alternative...

I think this show is actually absurdity being used to hide meaning - that Rick uses absurdity to avoid meaning. Rick's family does mean a lot to him, but he's burying himself in humorous denial (and booze)... and it might actually be driving him insane now. But even in mad ramblings, symbols can have meaning...
So, what is Szechuan Sauce? It's an alternate reality. It's a common, ordinary thing - dipping sauce - but different from the common version. More importantly, it's fleeting. It's a thing that existed for only a brief period of time that Rick can't being back. It's Morty. Szechuan Sauce is Rick's original Morty from the photos - his actual back-story.
And this relates to the entire denial theme of the show. There are infinite realities, so it all means nothing... Except if you're the Rickiest Rick or the Mortiest Morty. Or Rick's lost Morty. There are infinite possibilities, but each one of them is unique and special.

I think it was the most absurd thing the writers could think of. The execs at McDonald's were trying to come up with a tie in promotion so they threw a bunch of unrelated Asian things together and made a sauce for their chicken nuggets.
