97 years is a reference from the 1st episode where he said they would adventure for 100 years
Julian Rivera duh
Julian Rivera And when Justin and Dan were joking about how some fan were going to kill themselves if they didn't get 100 years of Rick and Morty.
Maybe they produce a last episode and give it to later genarations to release it. I would totaly hate them for such a move :D
I'm A Member of the Midnight Crew so I think it's the same for the sauce, it's just a joke, of course it is (as Rick and Morty is a commedy), and, even though it is funny to imagine what all this should mean in the series, it's a bit stupid
Dont agree with this argument. If nothing has meaning and one doesnt chicken out with meaning the only thing left is basic gratificatiin (sex, drugs alcohol, pleasure) in short endorphins. For Rick the univers becoms a playground to get gratification. The sezchuan sauce explains this perfectly. Why?
1. It is food - which is a instant gratification
2. It is not a drug which would achieve the same effect (two electrodes in the brain and the pleasure would cancle out everything else. BUT
3. Rick doesnt take this road which implies that the how is important for him which comes to point 4
4. He needs to validate his own worth the not existence of the sezchuan sauce in all universes is a challange to himself a seek for push himselfe.
5. At the marriage we see Rick is still capable of emotion and openung up so the last question is.
6. Is the seek for challanges a way for Rick to dull himself from the existencial crises or is it a need that is something more (retribution? Validation?)
I was thinking that the obsession with the sauce has nothing to do with the plot of the show in the slightest. It is very possible that it was and is being used to measure the influence the show has on its audience. the sauce would be virtually not spoken about by a single person until the episode came out, so the creators could use this perfect metric to determine the shows influence
Sean Kurzman It certainly worked!
I completely forgot that sauce ever existed in the first place
untill this episode came out. I also want some now.
If Mc'ds brings it back it'll sell like hotcakes,
solely due to the show no less.
Good point. They also mentioned pogs and I haven't seen those in years
I felt the same way. Everyone is talk about the sauce and I would bet that a good percent of the fans are in their 20's therefore never ate the sauce. We all need to think for ourselves and stop being a bunch of Jerrys
We really are a bunch of Jerrys aren't we
I have mentioned this sauce to several people in my life. I ate it when the movie was out and when the promo ended, my life was less rich. Of all the people I've asked over the years, only my sister remembers the holy sauce, since we ate it together at the time...
Rick is a god in his world and the worlds he has created (season 2, Ep 6), but he realizes he is in a tv show. If he can bring back the Szechuan Sauce in our timeline, he will have literally, singlehandedly affected our reality. That's why the sauce is his "one-armed man"
Imagine if the world we live in were a simulation, and we did something to affect the world that houses our simulation; that would be a giant middle finger to our creators and it would, in a sense, be proof that we do exist.
yup mind blown
But technically it's not rick it is the creators of the show, it's an animated TV show not a simulation, your theory makes no sense
chris martin that's what you think
holy shit
Chris Martin
His theory makes perfect sense aside from the fact he is applying it to a TV show made by people from the real world.
You are right in the fact it's a TV show and not a simulation, so it would be Dan Harmon & Co making the change and not a simulated being.
But if you apply his theory to the whole "We are living in a simulation" idea, it makes perfect sense.
I think you seriously overestimate how honest both Rick himself and the show overall are, because they really aren't. The episode was far more ambiguious than you suggest: did Rick save Summer and Morty beause he loves them or because he needed them for Beth? Why does he care about Beth at all then? Did Rick give himself up for the family and make the plan from insdie the prison or was it all planned all along? If Rick does not care about his grandchildren at all, why did he sacrifice himself for Morty in the first episode of the second season? None of the things Rick says can be trusted. I think Rick himself sees the world as meaningless, but usually cannot quite bring himself to live up to it. He still has morals and that is why he sacrificed himself for Morty. He wants to convince himself that he's only doing in for the sauce or whatever crazy idea he has, but in reality Dostoevsky's ethics tend to take over him. The universe may not suggest any meaning, but that does not mean Rick can honestly belive that himself. He wants to, probably but he can't seem to be able to do it.
This ^^^^ Rick wants the universe to be meaningless but struggles with caring.
I'm not quite sure whether that was real or sarcasm :D
Yeah I do think the same, Rick just can't cope with being honest and giving warmth to other people, even if he wants inside of himself.
more agree witg your comment than with the video
This is true. There are many small examples in the show where Rick acts in a kind way despite himself, especially when he doesn't need to do so. Just off the top of my head, the episode where Rick buys Morty the sex doll because Morty says it "looks cool." He didn't need to do that, and in fact, it potentially put him at risk with Beth, the matriarch of the household (and the person that ensures he has a place to live that provides him with the company of others, something he desperately needs, despite his repeated attempts to remain aloof). His relationship with Bird Person is also indicative of a deeper desire for meaning (the two of them fight in the name of freedom against the galactic government) and the value he placed on that relationship is obvious to the viewer, especially after Bird Person is killed.
Rick is a tortured soul, grappling with the knowledge that there is no inherent meaning in the universe, and that caring about others often leads to pain and is usually not worth the trouble, while still desiring, deep down, companionship and meaning in life. He is deeply cynical and calculating, but he doesn't *want* to be cynical and he is only calculating because it helps him survive. He is an anarchist, not because he is an ideologue, but because he has no respect for authority (Rick is arguably the smartest man in the galaxy, after all; he is powerful beyond reckoning because of his level of knowledge and ingenuity) and because he enjoys his freedom to experience and experiment in the multiverse. One could argue that it is the journey, the "adventure," that gives his life meaning, and good adventures always have conflict.
What I'm trying to say here is that actions speak louder than words, especially in *this* show, and Rick's actions give the lie to his words on many occasions. I am agreeing with you in that his words cannot be trusted, but I would also add that he is an agent of chaos, a Nietzschean overman at war with those who would attempt to control and/or contain him, but that this fact, the fact that he is a bit of a demigod, does not make him devoid of the human desires for meaning and deep relationships. He is, begrudgingly, as you argue, more like Dostoyevsky than he is like Camus.
And that's actually a good thing. Fuck Camus and his "cooler-than-thou, seen-it-all" bullshit pretense. He was human, just like the rest of us, and every human living desires meaning; no-one wants to simply "exist" when there is a way to be more. That is a big part of what separates us from other animals; mere survival is not enough. We need more. Otherwise, why act at all? Why continue to exist if there is never any possibility of creating or finding meaning?
Rick and Morty was just created to pressure McDonald's into bringing back the Szechuan sauce
The long game.
Thats reasonable... I'm serious you should do anything for good sauce!
McDonald's created Szechuan sauce to inspire the creation of Rick and Morty.
Gricho and mulan pressured mcdonalds to make the sauce to pressure them into making rick and morty then they pressured mcdonalds to bring back the sauce so it was all planed
TheRealNinjaScorpion How deep does this thing go?
It's like Tallahassee from Zombieland, all he wants is to find one last Twinkie in a dying world.
King Alex Holy crap now I see
yeah but he also does it cause it reminds me of his kid/dog/life before zonbies
King Alex You're right!
Maybe, the origin-story wasn't completely made up (because, y'know, the best stories contain a little bit of truth) and the szechuan sauce also reminds Rick of the time, before he started travelling different dimensions (and becoming an "unfeeling ghost", as he puts it).
We can't know (yet) but it would be something, which fits - at least in my mind.
UltimateIceCream | Hip Hop Beats
it's totaly possible that Rick's made up story, may actually be, at least in part true. plus Rick has a history of taunting people by revealing his intentions. (like just after hacking the machine and becoming an insect, he reveals a large part of his plan to the other bugs)
so who knows :D
"What is my purpose?"
"You pass butter."
As a waiter at IHOP... "Oh my god" xD
@authorization batman nobody asked you for “motivation “ asshole
If Rick can invent a portal gun, why can't he just mix a few spices together and make his own szechuan sauce?
Luke William it's not the same. Like when you eat chicken nuggets from McDonald's why isn't it the same as chicken nuggets from the grocery store.
Luke William because you didn't make the nuggets yourself?
becausee...
SZECHUAN SAAAAUUCEEE
(and pickle rick)
if you work hard to obtain something, it has special meaning and you will enjoy it infinitely more than someone who has everything thing they want giving to them without any effort whatsoever. ... why are Lobsters and Caviar considered a delicacy when they are just Sea Bugs and Fish Eggs?, why do hipsters collect old vinyl records and record players when you can download MP3s?, why do people restore antiques when they could just order furniture from IKEA?, its because when something is rare and limited supply, it artificially inflates the perceived value of the thing. the meaning is in the journey to obtain it, not the actual thing itself.
nunya baznus Sounds superficial.
RIP Hammerhead Morty.
he was more than just a hammer
Reuben Stump no he live
Patrick De Brun Yeah... He was a very effective human shield...
Reuben Stump the one true morty
Pff, that guy was a tool.
HE WHO CONTROLS THE PANTS CONTROLS THE GALAXY!
HE WHO CONTROLS THE SZECHUAN SAUCE CONTROLS THE GALAXY!
Gpc Caraballo
Jera and blank card= infinite Szechuan Sauce!
too bad batteries' RNG is never on my side
chluebi reference from the movie Dune
He who controls the spices controls the galaxies
And that's the waaaaaaaay the news goes.
Periphery, check it out!
Graaaasssss tastes bad.
Luke William I don’t giiiiive a fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck😂😂😂. These catchphrases though
But if there are infinite universes, Rick could just go to one where the Szechuan sauce wasn't discontinued.
Daxuran wow you are a genius!
This was my thought exactly. They kind of painted themselves in a corner with the infinite universe thing. Tho the show is epic regardless.
I think you underestimate just how big infinite is. Like Rick said, it would take him 97 years to find that sauce.
Supa Kron How do you explain the fact that he found the perfect universe to move to after the Love potion incident? Seems to me that it's very easy for him
wubalubadubdub!
Based on the fact that he considered the idea of being a normal caring person at the wedding, it seems fairly obvious that Rick is falling back into absurdist nihilism as a defense mechanism for his trauma. Rick is a man so battered psychologically, he's constructed an entire absurdist motivation as to why he went back to save the Morty and Summer he had before, instead of easily replacing them.
Rick's nihilism is a front. His refusal to accept meaning isn't a sign of enlightenment, and certainly not 'refusing to chicken out'. In fact, it's his ultimate display of cowardice. He isn't doing it because it makes sense, he's doing it because it hurts less. But the fact that he decided to stay in that universe at all instead of hopping to another one with a recently dead Rick and a divorced Beth and Jerry to start all over again only proves he's hiding his true emotions, because that's what damaged people do. Hell, the fact that he feels the need to stay with his biological family at all is a sign that he's lying to himself. He's desperate for meaning. Even if it is rooted in gaining a sense of control.
UltimateKyuubiFox Thank you, some great points! Also, this youtuber clearly forgot about Rick's suicide attempt after the break up with Unity...
UltimateKyuubiFox Indeed, great point.
Rick saying he only saved them so his daughter does not
kick him out is nonsensical and self-contradictory
because it would've been easier for him to just
live anywhere else in the multiverse.
UltimateKyuubiFox it doesn't really matter if you think he is a coward or he is trying to find meaning because at the end it all ends being an absurd meaningless thing at the basic level like how u r trying to find neaning in that there should be a reason why he Rick is a nihilist.....
Maybe he's just a drunk...
Naveen Shekhar Nihilism might make logical sense, but it's definitely not the core of Rick's worldview and we have several on-screen examples of familial empathy on Rick's part to prove that. If Jared wanted to make a video discussing these concepts at length, he could just as easily have pointed out that Rick is still incapable of fully committing to his supposed nihilism, and is, in fact, a hypocrite. I don't fault the effort to go into detail about the philosophy R&M deals with, I just want to make sure we don't overlook the subtext of the episode with regards to Rick's character in order to do so.
Not so fast Morty, you heard your mom. We've got adventures to go on Morty. Just you and me. And sometimes your sister and sometimes your mom but never your dad. You wanna know why Morty? Because he crossed me. Oh it gets darker Morty. Welcome to the darkest year of our adventures. First thing that's different, no more dad Morty. He threatened to turn me in to the government. So I made him and the government go away. I've replaced them both as the de facto patriarch of your family and your universe. Your mom wouldn't have accepted me if I came home without you and your sister, so now you know the real reason I rescued you. I just took over the family Morty and if you tell your mom or sister I said any of this, I'll deny it. And they'll take my side because I'm a hero Morty. And now you're gonna go and do whatever I say Morty. Forever. And I'll go out and I'll find some more of that Mulan Szeschuan Teriyaki dipping sauce Morty. Because that's what this is all about Morty. That's my one-arm man. I'm not driven by avenging my dead family Morty. That was fake. I'm driven by finding that Mcnugget sauce. I want that Mulan Mcnugget sauce Morty. That's my series arc Morty. If it takes nine seasons. I want my Mcnugget dipping sauce Szeschuan sauce Morty. That's what's going to take us all the way to the end Morty. Season nine more seasons Morty. Nine more seasons until I get that dipping Szeschuan sauce. For ninety-seven more years Morty. I want that Mcnugget sauce Morty.
Wubba Lubba Dub Dub!
I've seen a lot people type this on multiple videos but it never fails to be funny.
" That's my one-arm man. "
What does that phrase means?
Reference to The Fugitive
I was wondering why Rick said 97 years, until I rewatched the pilot episode where Rick said, in the same spot as season 3 "100 years Rick and Morty". This is the third season which I guess is the third year of their adventures
nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody's going to die
arguably the smartest thing Morty's every
What about when rick comforts morty after he was molested, it shows him caring for morty
Joshua Collins I hate kids, but I would kill a molester.
But you're capable of empathizing which means you have humanity.
It was all so he could get closer to thAT MULAN SZESCHUAN TERIYAKI DIPPING SAUCE!
LittleRock Clydesdale with Rick it was most likely so he wouldn't lose his human cloaking shield
the reality is that rick needs to appear human at times so we the viewer actually care about his character. Whether he cares or not is never fully stated to keep us on our toes. By dropping hints that, yes he does give a shit, compels us to root for him through out the show. Instead of viewing him as a heartless borderline abusive mad scientist who doesn't care what so ever.
also morty was (for the most part) ok. he hadn't sustained any physical injuries that threatened his health and if anything the phycological damage could have been used to make him even more dependant on rick.
But the creators of the show aren't dicks so they gave rick a touch of sympathy.
ITS NOT ABOUT AVENGING MY DEAD FAMILY MORTY
its about that szechuan sauce! 9 more seasons until i get it.
Rick and Morty is a boring series.
Mo Killem YOU JUST MADE THE LIST!!!!!!
Great i can finally get into those clubs.
oh you think the list is funny you stupid idiot well you know what happens? huh? mo you stupid idiot YOUR MAKING THE LIST AGAIN !!!!
This video is true, except for the fact that rick does care about morty. There has been 3 different cases of this happening through out the show. First was when morty was almost raped by the jelly bean and rick opened up a portal just to kill the guy. Second was when their time was fucked up and rick sacrificed himself to save morty (and it didnt create another timeline). Last was when rick was accused of killing other ricks and when evil rick captured real rick and was showing him real rick's memories of morty. Those memories made rick cry.
Rick does love his family members, he just keeps finding new ways of bypassing actually having to admit it. Because if he admits it, he'll consider himself just as flawed as other mortals.
And those loved ones could potentially be captured and used as leverage against him like one of the council Ricks tried in this very episode. Rick C137 was even able to convince the council Rick that he didn't care, even though council Rick knows he's a rogue Rick, and if he can even convince a council Rick that it's not worth capturing his family and using them as leverage then he can pretty much convince anyone of it.
So every new way Rick C137 finds to act like he doesn't care about his family is just his way of showing them just how much he cares!
You're ignoring evidence from the show that implies this is a Rick who at some point has meaningfully cared (which is 100% a Rick that must exist in infinite timelines), and probably still does, despite his vain attempts at forcing the people/aliens/etcs around him to perceive that he doesn't. I don't think our Rick is an absurdist champion, devising meaning to set up a joke about its meaninglessness. I think our Rick is actually one of the single most human characters in the show, more of an absurdist hero, one who suffers from the debilitating effects of recognizing the meaninglessness of the universe but being unable to break away from it; not necessarily trying to arbitrarily create more though. This is why he is in pain, hence the crying for /his/ Morty (not ours, presumably) in the ep. with the evil Morty and the inclination towards suicide, though woefully unable to follow through, from losing Unity. More on topic, the szechuan sauce thing could just potentially be because our Rick's reality coincides with the reality wherein he must (100%) be obsessed with the sauce, although as someone else in the comments pointed out, he should just go to a reality where it is still (again, 100%) being served. Can't wait to see where they go with this. I think the Rick and Morty meta philosophy is to point out the uselessness of philosophy considering infinite permutations of our universe, and the vanity in trying to find its philosophy. Rick and Morty is one of the most human shows I've ever seen. But, hey, that's just a theory, a meta-rick-szechuan-and-morty theory (thanks for reading)
You're missing the point. This video isn't analyzing rick, it's analyzing the sauce and what it means in a meta sense. it's a joke from the writers that's supposed to take the piss out of people that want to inject meaning into absurdist. it's not about rick as a person but about what this episode and specifically what the sauce stands for
SentDirectlyToDaSoul your a morty
Wisecrack never fails to amaze me. The philosophy of f**king Szechuan sauce in Rick and Morty!?
Asher Rwakiseeta It's amazing how much they're fucking milking this shitty series. It's amazing how much the cancerous fanbase loves to eat this shit up.
Just think of how less cancerous I will become when I learn all these philosophical theories just by watching the Rick and Morty episodes of this show.....
Nah. Why bother with that. Not like it would change anything.
(did I hit the point?)
Coming form Hillary Clinton of all usernames.
The real question is: Why do you Care SO much?!?
e celeb bullshit I'm not bashing Rick and Morty, I actually like it (as controversial as it is). I just find it absurd how Wisecrack can find meaning in such a satirical show that doesn't take anything seriously
On the one hand, sure. On the other hand... what about when Rick gave Morty his time-fixing collar and was ready to float endlessly out of time to get Morty back to his own life?
Also, Rick's original plan in the Rickshank redemption was to just collapse the government, only when seal team rick messed it up he changed his plan to include saving Morty and Summers, so... would Beth have accepted him if he came back after collapsing the government, without having to save Morty and Summers? And of course, at the wedding he DID open up, and he DID get pretty upset over the death of his friend. So i really don't think Rick does not care at all about the people around him... he's still human. So what would that mean in this philosophy? Will he eventually pretend there is meaning to life like most other people, or is it possible to love even when you know it is pointless and absurd?
myky992 it's crazy to think about, but yeah rick definitely cares about his family
I'm probably just letting my mind go too far with this, but I wonder if maybe Morty will become so similar to Rick (we're already seeing signs of that) that something will happen that jolts Rick into realizing that despite everything being pointless he still cares - and that wouldn't make too much of a change in his lifestyle but maybe it'll make him a little happier?
myky992 That was only one alternate version. Who knows, maybe if reality was split into even more pieces, he would have a version where he killed Morty.
myky992 I think the creators are intentionally leaving it
as ambiguous as possible so that the audience can
come up with their own interpretations as desired.
Maybe Rick doesn't care? Maybe he does and just
pretends he doesn't? No one knows, not even him.
but that's different rick from a different universe, so it's different.
But I actually want the Mulan McNugget Sauce....
Roberto Blake because you're a sheep
Infinite realities but no sauce found yet.
Heh. As a subscriber i didn't expect to see you here
I had it, not so good. It's a fast food teriyaki. Better than teriyaki wing sauce, but not by much. It's like ICK! It was loved only because ot the movie's popularity.
Ew
I would just like to point out that @1:35 he kills an entire race of beings....just to power his spaceship. Rick does things on a whim that would embarrass the most Ambitious psychopath.
Very interesting, but I feel Rick actually does care about his family and some other things in the multiverse, and his speech to Morty about the Mulan sauce was an attempt to convince Morty, and himself, otherwise. Notice that he tells Morty about the "dead family" backstory when Morty had no idea what he was referring to; his origin story might not be 100% fake after all, and he's just trying to convince himself and others that he is a complete nihilist. At least that's how I see things.
Fitzftw7
He said that because it was a joke that was suposed to break the 4th wall, the same way he said "9 more seasons".
It's clear that the backstory was a lie, you just want to believe it wasn't because you want to find some meaning. If this episode proves anything is that we would never get and insight of Ricks mind.
I think a better read is Rick is motivated by several things, some contradictory (like everyone else), and navigating that is the real absurdity.
It is completely possible to care about family or whatever to some degree and in the same breath long for the abyss.
In a sense the lucid indifference is a poisoned fruit in that breaking tradition becomes a tradition in itself, belief in the absurd is still a belief, and even the absurd hero is divorced from the universe, not believing he is absurd himself.
Nope, the the real absurdist position is to jump headlong into the abyss a la the theist existentialists and do something like work for the government as that is the most pointless endeavor in the known universe.
Needs more Gogol.
Augusto T
He knows that he's a cartoon and that the meaning of his existence is to be a source of entrainment for the viewer.
@Augusto T: Eeh, we'll see. This video raises an interesting point, but its main drawback is that it takes the singular Season 3 episode to be all the information available. Sure, it currently is, but I don't believe we can confidently claim an absurdist viewpoint before seeing what happens next. For now, I shall remain convinced that the "fake backstory" is actually the real thing - and that Rick denouncing it as a charade, as well as his newly-acquired obsession with special sauce, is misdirection.
Augusto T
isn't the fact that Rick spends the whole of this episode reuniting his family, and him in it, tell us that at the very least he wants to be with them?
I would say that "caring" is probably not the right word, but he wants to be around them(especially Morty, the closest thing he has to a Son)
you could speculate that being around the people that are the closest to you (biologically/family)
it's his preferred way of distracting himself from his painful pointless existence...
suits me ! :D

Well that didn't go well.
That's racist.
3 Years later
9 SEASONS MORTY I NEED THAT SAUCE
Koopa Goopa no 97 seasons over 9 years
wrong way round, it is 9 seasons over 97 years
WolfOfLegend idiot
9 Seasons....and a movie.
The Idea of searching for the sauce reminds me of the search for a twinkie in Zombie Land
Yesss omg didn't think about that till you mentioned it
It also parallels the concept of missing caring about things in a world that he can no longer logically care about.
Did anybody notice what Rick says in that scene when they show where he was during 9 . 11?
Even though he knows how meaningless life is, he was still disturbed by the tragic loss of life. But just before that scene ends Rick quitetly says: "They're gonna use this as an excuse to strip away our freedom".
In one of the episodes Rick also mentions he doesn't care if it was an inside job or a terrorist attack. What matters is that innocent people died and they're using it as an excuse to take away our freedom and as an instrument of fear to manipulate our cosmically insignificant lives.
True
In Rick’s rant to Morty at 6:59 he has the drool on his face which indicates that he’s drunk and is trying to deny his own emotions. He rescued them bcs he cares abt them, but doesn’t want to admit it to himself.
But what about that moment of empathy we see in rick when he sacrifices his time collar to save Morty during "A Rickle in Time" in season 2?
Probably knew that it would benefit him somehow.
Maybe he has felt responsible for dragging his grand kinds into problems by making party then stopping time which finally caused time problems.
Nah thats all planned. since he has to assume all other Ricks are waiting for their Mortys to synch up, he has to fix his Morty first. Saving himself wouldnt do anything, because all the other Ricks would still be stuck helping their Mortys, preventing him from synching up even if he put the collar on.
Bennett -Redacted- maybe he does at least somewhat care about Morty and only says he doesn't because he doesn't wanna be vulnerable and doesn't want Morty to get too self-confident (like he said in Rick-counters of the rick kind: "a cocky Morty can lead to some big problems")
Katie H : Being an absurdist doesn't mean you can't enjoy things/life/others.
Absurdists accept that things do not have an inherit meaning/ absolute & accept the absurdity that it is part of human nature to look for meaning (where there inevitably is none.)
-Camus says "you must imagine sisyphus as happy" (the man pushing the boulder only to have it roll back down hill & cause him to start this process over again for all eternity.)
-the absurdist believes questioning one's meaning should not lead to their physical suicide or "philosophical suicide" which is believing in religion as a "leap of faith" in order to find meaning in the meaningless or as a way to willfully ignore the absurd nature of existence.
-The absurdist must accept & then revolt against his own absurd nature, stay alive, and search for meaning in their own way knowing they probably won't find any or if they do that any meaning found is not inherit, so others will not have the same meaning on it. (the Absurd hero)
-Camus had a daughter who he loved. Rick has a daughter he loves (beth) as well as her child (morty.)
-Rick's quest for meaning motivates him to become the patriarch of his family even if it means destroying the whole government & now he is also motivated by his 9 season quest to bring back the Mulan sauce.(which has no inherit meaning to all people but does have meaning to rick as an absurd hero who will probably find no meaning in the sauce but find meaning in his family & position in said family.
"I WANT THAT MULAN MCNUGGET SAUCE!" -best quote of 2017

I love the fact that the ending scene of s3 ep1 is a mirror image of the final scene in s1 ep1 both reflect ricks disregard for morty and anything that would typically provide meaning or purpose in ones life, in favor of ricks selfish desires
right at the end, he did everything to regain the acceptance from his daughter. He does care.
Its pretty simple, I just need my szechuan teriyaki sauce. Even if it takes me 9 seasons.
You do know, you could look up how to make It right?
i noticed that too, why doesn't he just MAKE the dipping sauce? i mean, they DO have sci-fi weapons and spaceships, so couldn't he just read what's inside of it and make it himself with one of his creations?
Rick Sanchez oh no I'm having 6 seasons and a movie flashbacks, I can't do this again
Or he could go to a dimension where it is still served.
Carzeyday Oh how nieve you are...I doubt that anyone can recreate this sauce. it's too good for most human minds to recreate. Plus, if hardly anyone has memory of what it tasted like, then it's nearly impossible. Also, I've attempted to recreate it over the years and details on how it was made are scarce...
Okay, seeing how they are making a live-action Mulan movie, I hope they bring the Szechuan Sauce back.
Also, I get this feeling that the creators of the show will end it with Rick and Morty being the only two is alive, after the entire multi-verse has been destroyed. Rick and Morty will look out into the vast, empty, meaningless void, with Morty staring in shock, while Rick just enjoys his Szechuan Sauce.
DaManOfStuff Do you have a source on this information, or are you just guessing?
Okay, if it's true, I'm going to two packets of the Szechun Sauce. One to try for myself, and the other to send to Rick. LOL
only to be.. another simulation ! got you suckers ! ! !
J1P2K That's impossible a multiverse has infinite universes
Serpent Soldier then there's a universe where the multiverse doesn't exist
The Szechuan Sauce bit at the end was clearly the writers poking fun at people who read way too much into this cartoon, like yourself.
I kinda want Rick to go crazy looking for Szechuan Sauce.
At the end Rick had to pick family or Infinite Szechuan Sauce with the recipe, Rick fucks up and ends up saving his family. Rick looks okay at first but inside the lab he looks defeated because his lifelong Quest still continues.
Very well done on this episode, love the Camus breakdowns. Can't wait for Season 3, also thanks for doing all this good work on this specific show, you helped lead me to it.
one problem here though is that Rick could have gotten a new Summer and Morty but he chose to get the Summer and Morty that was his- their mom wouldn't have known a difference. Does that mean he still could care about them?
Jon Carrillo Fox: He also couldve probably also gotten a new portal gun from the Citadel of Ricks and teleported to a dimension where they didnt go to the wedding.
So probably
Well we know for a fact that Rick and Morty already aren't with their original family.
jakx2ob oh, how is that? I heard from the other videos that we could be following a different family but how are this Rick and Morty with a different family then their own? thanks,
Jon Carrillo
They destroyed dimension C137 with a kronenburg( ?) epidemic, forcing them to go to another dimension where the world was still fine and their alternate selves are killed. Now C137 rick and morty are living with a different family that is not their original one. So why Rick cared about Summer is unknown. Many also theorize that Morty is not C137 Rick's original Morty, since some of his memories don't add up.
Jon Carrillo Fox: in the season 3 premiere we see that Mortys first family is still the ones in kronenbuer land and that the Rick and morty from the current dimension are dead in the backyard still. So pretty sure its the same dimension
The sauce is the bluff. We got a person who is a cornic bullshit artist. It is his white whale, but more so his Island sauce. You think he cant make that sauce? It is symbolic of a time before his life was changed. To return to a state where he is no longer in pain.
Carzeyday Indeed. It is kind of dumb how few people
point out that Rick could easily just build a device
that makes sauce so he can have as much as he wants.
Which means the sauce has to be a metaphor for
something else entirely.
(actually looked It up.It is on google to make)
Rick's whole mission was to wipe out the council of ricks and the GF when they become intertwined with him.
Both are extremes and actual Mirrors of what this existentialism can lead to. the GF will do not nothing unless they are paid and everything is centered around money and the Ricks only care for their safety hiding in a multidimensional Irony tower as they more or less heard Mortie's like cattle to be given to a Rick.
The reason is simple,GF are more or less gonna make earth a hellhole. And The Ricks no matter what. Will come looking for Rick or even take his Morty.
Second, they have already jumped demissions once. And not to a timline with a living Rick and Morty, but right when they die. Filling in the void that would of been caused. The Timeline they left is still around. With that Jerry,Beth and Summer still in a Normbrug world with a normbrug rick and Morty in It now.
Also,If his goal is ultimate "nothing matters but fucking with everything". He would have already left and like brained controlled Morty or someshit. He would not care for aprroval,What's Jerry gonna do? Build a dimissonal jumping device?
I think the truth is this,Rick and Morty is more Character driven then world driven. So,you have to read character motives and not the symbolism of their talk. It is more "why on earth would they lie?" vs "What is the meaning of the lie?"
The real question however is this. How much of his past is actually a lie and how much is truth?
But Rick lost his ability to improvise. He said so himself. The sauce has to have real world meaning to him.
Great job simply summarizing the whole episode and adding small references to philosophy.
I can't believe you bought the Szechuan sauce lie. just because Rick says something does not mean it's true. he genuinely CARES for Morty and Summer, but he has lost so much it profoundly scares him to be close to anyone. and the one time he tries Tammy kills Birdperson, his best friend.
Ranting and raving at Morty in the end, taking credit for getting Jerry out of the house, all that is just Rick being opportunistic, and scared.
And you fell for it.
Was that why he left Summer in Cronenburg world?
He could also probably reverse-engineer the sauce so he can make his own that is identical to the sauce right down to the molecular level.
aacsmiles
Do you really think Rick didn't try?
Do you know how often Rick goes to different dimensions, he's probably mapping out the Dimensions trying to find a sauce, it's an infinite universe it will take a long time, about 97 years if he's lucky.
I want to like this comment, but the geek in me doesn't want to ruin the 42 likes count.
...
Meh, feck it. At some point someone is going to ruin it, and it might as well be me. Life, the universe, and everything is meaningless anyway.
Robert Larsson Whether or not Rick cares about Summer and the rest of his family is up to debate, but it's already proven in S03E06 (Rest and Ricklaxation) that he does care about Morty, just that he sees it as a negative thing.
I still want to know how this Szechuan sauce tastes
inSANE like the Polynesian sauce at Chic-fill-a
Fernando Acuna LIKE LIFES MILK
Fernando Acuna like the Szchesuan sauce at McDonald's
an Average Cat 16 how does that taste 😂😂
rod9095 how do both those taste?😂
I disagree with the conclusion, I think the show is using the Szechuan Sauce to show what Rick really cares about, which was Morty. When the show was being made in 2012 and Morty is 14 then that means Morty might've been born in 1998, if so then that could mean that Rick is saying in a very crazy way he loves Morty because the happiest and most obsessed day of his life was when Morty was born. I think it is something to that.
Hardcore Bunny Nice catch
Hardcore Bunny Hmmm interesting!
Hardcore Bunny well idiots will find meaning in whatever vague association they want. That's why people think sugar causes cancer.
Sugar does cause cancer.
Sugar is one of the substances that allows the continuation of mitosis as a necessary ingredient in human functionality, and thus through means, propagates cancer. It just causes it as much as anything we eat, breath, and radiation poisoning we get standing in front of a microwave. Just not in the way we think.
+furyberserk Microwave ovens do not give you radiation poisoning. The mesh is small enough to block microwaves like a Faraday cage, and failing that, microwaves are not a form of high energy "ionising radiation" such as Xrays or gamma rays, and as such will not strip electrons from your atoms, turning them into ions and potentially damaging your DNA, leading to radiation poisoning and cancer. _Visible light_ is a form of radiation, it's all part of the electromagnetic spectrum, but will not give you cancer.

Rick and Morty video's are the best on your channel, keep up the great work!
Bring back Szechuan sauce!
joe miskell Yeah we all need meaning, or do we?
joe miskell There's a video on how to make your own. Besides McDonald's probably won't out of fear of being criticized for cultural appropriation or denigration.
Ron Nickels make it the same flavour but call it a Rick Sauce.
Ron Nickels Actuallu, your mistaken and clearly you learned nothing from the video. McDonald's doesn't care about denigration and cultural appropriation. They just want us to eat their shit and make money. Hence the head chef of McDonald's hinting that popular demand would bring it back. Also the live action movie of Mulan makes the perfect circumstances.
Really? This is what came down from the 9:56 video?
I'm not sold on Rick's final speech about the sauce. Rick frequently goes out of his way to save Morty and/or Summer, so the idea that he only did it so that Beth would take him back is doubtful. Also, his interest in returning to Beth implies a meaningful attachment, one he very much does not focus on. I posit that this is Rick fighting the meaning that had crept into his life over the past two seasons. At the end of season 2 he was legitimately in a vulnerable place of purpose and it was immediately exploited by Tammy. He seemed content to live with his family on a distant planet, but upon realizing he had caused them to suffer, he adopted a more personally dangerous plan that would ensure a better life for his family regardless of his success or failure. That being said, he is extremely uncomfortable to reveal his vulnerability particularly after the red wedding and he finds an alternative absurd explanation to trick his family and possibly himself with. I believe that Rick is suffering from what all nihilists do, that meaning naturally sneaks into their lives and motivations. He is stuck in a struggle between his natural attachment to his family, and his belief that life is purposeless. Throughout a lot of the show Rick flips between acceptance and rejection of meaning. My favorite example is the first episode of season two where he prays to God, then immediately denies him. He actually occasionally mentions God as though he exists while most often disregarding the possibility, it certainly seems purposefully inconsistent. To summarize, Rick doesn't actively believe in meaning but accidentally finds meaning throughout life, he struggles against what he naturally gains.
I really like this interpretation and I definitely want this to be the case. Rick and Morty is going to get really stale for me as a show if Rick is just truly detestable. If he doesn't inspire any empathy it's just going to be repeating "life is meaningless so I can be an asshole" for a season. Your version is much more compelling.
Nikoli Sadnak this should be top comment
Nikoli Sadnak This loses completely the point of the video.
I never thought I'd be so blown away by a video titled The Philosophy of Szechuan Sauce.
This is one of the greatest videos about Rick and Morty
Rick might be trying to increase the longevity of the show with this product placement and increasing absurdity derived humor and shenanigans. He is a dimension traveler aware that he is in a cartoon. This is just him trying to perpetuate his existence without being too obvious so it breaks the effect (but also hinting at it). He is trying to save the entirety of existence. He is the ultimate hero.
Rick's "flash back" house is Walter's house from Breaking Bad. This show is amazing.
Holy crap you're right!
I never noticed that even though Breaking Bad is my favorite show
i din't notice that untill you mentioned omfg
I think it's great to make my string of thoughts neat. and it's also great that this video which was inspired by my currently favourite show R&M made me know more about Camus. thank you for all the effort you put in making it
When you figure this shit out, the guys have to dig deeper to keep us all baffled. you are the reason its taking so long for season 3 to come out. keep up the good work
You fuckin nailed it. I don't understand how people didn't like the ending of this most recent episode. It went back to the roots and consistent theme of the show, which is that nothing has meaning. And it was hilarious.
Why are you in great pain?
BECAUSE I NEED THAT uuuuUURRP SZECHUAN uUuRp SAUCE MORRRTYYYYYYY
He will wait 97 more years for that sauce, Morty. Or 9 seasons.
The next 9 seasons will play out over the entirety of 97 years.
I just want to love and be loved.
The smartest man in the universe but can't even make his own Szechuan Sauce...
+Denfry There are different types of intelligence, and multiple theories which seek to explain or model said types. In practical application, consider two geniuses in their specific way: Beethoven and Alexander III aka "Alexander the Great" of Macedon. Both were geniuses in music and military strategy, but that doesn't necessarily translate to the other's field or genius.
Dude, sezchuan sauce is like 3 ingredients. Ofcourse Rick is smart enough to make his own.
The problem is that the original Szechuan Sauce never specify the amount of ingredients used, they just said the names.
but then the quest for the sause would lose all meaning
Denfry it won't be the same
This video almost makes me want to go through Year 11 Philosophy again.
How has no one pointed out that he can go to infinite realities so why hasn't he just gone to a couple where the Szechuan sauce is still being served. That was like my first thought after laughing my butt off to the ending.
maybe thats the kicker. maybe there just isnt a universe with the teriyaki sauce.
But that doesn't make any sense. Rick has a box in the garage that says "Time travel stuff" so clearly he can just travel back in time to when the sauce was being served.
having a box that says "time travel stuff" doesn't necessarily mean he heas acquired time travel technology, and also I think the writers have said they don't plan on having any kind of time travel in the show
zoranhacker they said it's lazy writing and they won't touch it. I'm honestly really happy that they won't open that can of worms.
+jeremiah ronduelas I heard somewhere that they put the time travel stuff on the shelf to symbolize "putting it on the shelf".the idea was that Rick tried to timetravel a long time ago but never could. Basically yeah, they dont want to write time travel stuff.

As stupid as that sounds I would be interested to see where he could take it.
Bayu Nugraha The first 3 seasons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Spongebob!!!
... If you didn't realize, this channel has more "mature" and intelligent videos, not videos about stupid TV Shows, Spongebob is made for children, there's no philosophy there.
Coolbreon Then I don't know if you've really watched the show.. It was genius
Coolbreon ...You have a pokemon as your avatar. Just pointing out the irony.

I get the existential philosophical messages in Rick and Morty, however I think it's a stretch to say that we were looking for the "meaning of life" in wanting to believe in Rick's humanity. I think the part in us wanting to believe that rick is not a sociopath is because humans are empathetic, and social creatures, we look for faces, we give emotions and human characteristics to anything from our smartphones to our dogs and cats. We just want to believe that people are human, especially if they're dropping hints that they are, like Rick has done. That's why we're so fascinated by sociopaths.
Haha, I'm afraid you're right. Wubba lubba dub dub! Hahaha.
Esmeralda Nugis why are you in great pain, my friend?
Yes but Existentialism isn't quite the same as Absurdism. Adsurdism is realizing there is no meaning to life, but making a meaning anyway (regardless of being aware that this is absurd). so, it isn't a stretch (IMO)
That's becoming too technical. Existentialism is a broad umbrella term, that basically means "questioning the meaning of life".
Esmeralda Nugis, don't be in pain... get rickity rickity wrecked bro, instead :>
Fantastic analysis.
mat pat brought me here and i already love this channel
You said this was advertising a movie?
yes
The Twitter captions syncing up with the music was really cool.
This show is SOOOOOOOOOOOO amazing.
The ultimate joke is that if Rick ever spent some time in an asian market, he could have found that exact sauce in the aisle where the condiments are. Plum flavored szechuwan sause is about three or so bucks in an asian market.,
I also suspect that Rick Sanchez finds his life meaningless, because he is aware that he is a character in an Adult swim show, and his life is a series of set ups for absurd humour, to entertain people he does not know by killing imaginary people or universes, in weird ways.
There was an entire show dedicated to one Rick blowing up parrallel universes, while other Ricks try to figure out why their universes kept exploding around them at random.
Jonathan Brooks I think Deadpool does similar stuff
in marvel comics.
There was a special, called the Lost Episode, in which Rick and Morty experienced a Groundhogs day event in which they kept getting killed. Google Rick and Morty- Lost episode.
+Jonathan Brooks It seems like it's a fanmade episode to me.
It's fan made. But still pretty funny
Thanks for telling me this. I hope I remember this the next time I go to China Town.
The Szechuan Sauce represents the fact that Rick cannot travel through time. BUT from the memory of the creation of the portal gun the apple comes out rotten, maybe he cannot remember how he made the accidental gun. I think Rick is chasing something which he associates the sauce with, such as the time period when he loved his wife and his daughter was still an innocent depending little girl. I think he wants to live in that time period in the past for the rest of his life. Rick wants to control time.
I feel like we can dismiss the fake backstory. Mainly because Beth is alive.
You misunderstood what i said, the fake backstory operates like a dream or a memory. In that event the sauce, beth and his wife each take on a symbolic role in Ricks past.
Beth in the current dimension is alive, that doesn't mean Beth from Rick's dimension is.Rick switches places with himself all the time.
good eye, didn't catch that. I think that reinforces my theory.
I love that these videos have lazerhawk in them i love listening
you know what we all want even more rick and morty
this channel has just turned into a Rick and Morty commentary channel
tonio789 and that's a bad thing?
tonio789 it's their fav
tonio789 let us just ignore that their last video on the show was 2 month ago.
so what?
tonio789 I like it
I actually work at a McDonald's and have had people ask me about this sauce.
blueisasomedancer same, actually quite a bit. It honestly could be a pretty good promo for a while, but they could never tie it to rick and morty. Its too mature of a show for Mcdonald's to endorse.
Arram VanSlyke They've replied to them on twitter, so I could see it
this is freaking hilariously amazing
I fucking LIVE for your rick and morty videos❤️❤️❤️ keep 'em coming
What about season two episode one when he sacrificed himself for Morty?
atma that was A rick not uh c 1 mmmmm something
atma Well, one sixty-fourth of him saved Morty. While that does indicate that he still has some humanity left in him, 1/64 is not exactly an impressive number
Do Not Remove This Seal wasn't that also the only timeline where the latch was broken tho? u do have a good point, i just thought that since rick seemed pretty confident in his choice, (the fact that time didnt divide after he made his decision) should the same have happened in other timelines he would've done the same thing. or im being an idiot
Poisoned BananaBread Actually it was, he didnt create new timelines, he fractured his own timeline. Thats why there was a paradox and the whole schroedinger thing. So it was rick c-137.
atma WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO ME MORTY???
At 6:08, if you pause just at the right time, you can see Ricks compensating for something haha, wubba lubba dub dub 😂
HA!
teamstarpug uhhh alright dude hahaha 😂, I'm not the kind the get butthurt over a comment like that. Nice try though 👍🏻
Nice catch!
Pro tip: use < and > (without shift) to skip frame by frame.
Got my nose
Terry Hintz: Okay, but how do I do that on mobile?
This is, by far, the most intelligent breakdown of Szechuan sauce I have ever seen. Well done.
Now if you'll excuse me I need to go to a place where they sell McNuggests and demand Szechuan sauce.
We need a wisecrack edition of avatar the last airbender and legend of korra. I love you people
Lol I was just talking to my friend about the difference between Aang and Korra in terms of psychological health and mental stability. About how Aang is heavily influenced by eastern philosophy and has already achieved a form of enlightenment similar to that achieved by tibetan buddhists even though he is only twelve years old. I'd love to just see a wisecrack edition of eastern philosophies and the importance of their teachings towards psychological health and stability. We don't see much emphasis on these sort of teachings in the west.
anyone else notice the sauce says 2011 but came out in the 90s
But didn't rick save morty in that episode wher there were multiple versions of themselves
I never knew of the sause prior to rick and morty but boy did they make me wanna try it sometime
And here's why I think Rick *DOES* care about his family:
If there's an infinite amount of universes why did rick go through all that hustle of saving Summer and Morty if he could have just taken another universe? I mean it seems pointless to go through the harder way when there's an easy alternative...
And here's why you're thinking is horseshit: Your as dumb as a bag of sand and your slowly dying in a vat. HAHA TINY RICK!!!!!
7:12 WAIT ... he did care that his daughter let him live there... so..
Might just be less bothersome than to move all his shit to another place.
Yeah. I mean, Rick still has an entire secret lab to relocate if he's kicked out of the house.
Anyone else watching this while munching down on the re-release of Szechuan? 3/31/22
It is a really good sauce.
this show actually brought back the sauce on 10/7/17. at least where i live. it was out of stock within the 1st hour they released it.
Anti-April Fools joke?
Me and other Samurai Jack fans disagree.
Walter Nelson Extra Thicc!!!
flung back in time by a whole week
Walter Nelson That's why you have to be a fan of both, because then it won't matter and you'll be happy either way.
Kami Reborn yeah I like both shows but now im gonna ne blueballed until summer when we get the rest of s3...
Door Slammer atleast you still have the amazing show samurai jack
I think this show is actually absurdity being used to hide meaning - that Rick uses absurdity to avoid meaning. Rick's family does mean a lot to him, but he's burying himself in humorous denial (and booze)... and it might actually be driving him insane now. But even in mad ramblings, symbols can have meaning...
So, what is Szechuan Sauce? It's an alternate reality. It's a common, ordinary thing - dipping sauce - but different from the common version. More importantly, it's fleeting. It's a thing that existed for only a brief period of time that Rick can't being back. It's Morty. Szechuan Sauce is Rick's original Morty from the photos - his actual back-story.
And this relates to the entire denial theme of the show. There are infinite realities, so it all means nothing... Except if you're the Rickiest Rick or the Mortiest Morty. Or Rick's lost Morty. There are infinite possibilities, but each one of them is unique and special.
After coming off of the second half of season 4... somehow this vid is more relevant and accurate then I first thought.
They've done it! Szechuan sauce is back!
has anyone discussed discussed the fact that maybe the "premiere" of season three isn't the premiere at all, what if it's just a take on what they could have done, idk, just thought it could be possible
KGR3 Well, it did come out on april first....
holy shit, that would be a joke the die-hard fans would NOT take lightly, I think. But it is possible they'd do this.
Disney's Mulan, an American product based on a Chinese story, Szechuan, a province in China, Teriyaki, Japanese fried chicken. Is there any meaning to derive from this?
GuyWithAnAmazingHat Yes, it means there is a thing called whitewashing 👍
+Mellisa Fan Oh great, another SJW complaining how the Mulan Sauce is somehow racist. :-/
Or it could do with the journalist's version meaning, "To whitewash is a metaphor meaning "to gloss over or cover up vices, crimes or scandals or to exonerate by means of a perfunctory investigation or through biased presentation of data"."
Just a thought.
If it is Yasmin. I will apologize. But I have not got that impression.
I think it was the most absurd thing the writers could think of. The execs at McDonald's were trying to come up with a tie in promotion so they threw a bunch of unrelated Asian things together and made a sauce for their chicken nuggets.
