Hors Piste Skiing in Verbier - First Time

  • If you ski or snowboard Verbier, Switzerland and find yourself on Mont Fort, you can either take the advanced slope down or go "hors piste," which means "outside the ski area boundary." That's what I did. There were so many more lines to choose from. Total adventure. The key is to know where you're going and it's best to have a partner for safety. I linked up with a snowboarder the second time that I did it. For boarders, there is some flat terrain, so you may have to walk at some point. Unless you split board and hike to the back country. Either way, I think it is totally worth it. The "hors piste" terrain is less traveled and more advanced than the "in bounds" slopes. The scenery is even better than what you see throughout Les 4 Vallees.

    Off the back of Mont Fort is backcountry terrain. Is for groups that know the terrain, safe routes, or with guides. You are advised to carry full backcountry avalanche kit with you. Pls don’t go alone

      Came here to say this. Honestly abit scary, following tracks is dangerous up there. Weather changes fast.

    Awesome video and great skills! As a 64 year old South African with limited skiing skills, I wouldn't dare to venture off-piste like you did! I am going on another ski trip in January 2024, so look forward to that! Thanks again and greetings from sunny South Africa!

      Thanks! I actually filmed the opening the next day. Had I known it was hors psite, I wouldn't have gone alone! I thought it was a yellow slope. But it did look better than the black slope to me, which is why I went. Glad you're getting out there in January!

      Ha! Thanks, I actually went back and filmed the opening segment the following day. When I first skied it, I did think it looked better than the moguls but thought it was an inbounds un-patrolled slope based on the markings. I wouldn't have gone had I known it was hors piste with no guide, like you say. But then I knew the way and went back the next day with a boarding buddy.

    Some solid skiing skills, respect.
    But I would not ski alone such routes and never without appropriate gear for off piste.
    Amazing shots though. I have only been skiing the official yellow routes down from Col des Gentianes or Chassoure down to Tortin.

      Thanks! Totally agree - I actually entered the area thinking it was a yellow slope because the signs were very similar to how yellow slopes were marked when I was in Zermatt the week before. I filmed the opening the next day. I went to the area on purpose, but didn't realize it was hors piste until I was on it.

    Beautiful video! I started snowboarding off piste last year, and may have the chance to ride 2 days in either verbier or andermatt. I came across this video after watching your andermatt video. If you were to come back to switzerland for 2 days, which one would you pick for off piste/views?

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  Před 6 měsíci +1

      Thanks so much! The views at both resorts are incredible, but I think Verbier may have a slight edge. My sense is that Verbier has more options for true off-piste. But you obviously need to go with someone who knows where they're going outside the boundary area - it was pretty easy to link up with others in the area I went off of Mont Fort. Andermatt seemed to have some better "off-piste" options that were still in-bounds. So if I were going for 2 days and had a partner who knew the off piste terrain, I'd go to Verbier. If I were alone, I'd hit Andermatt and explore the great in-bounds options. You can't go wrong with either!

    awesome video, but you shouldn't do this alone, btw: have you ever considered to use other skis, like Core, Mantra M6 or something similar?

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  Před rokem +2

      Totally agree. In reality, I didn't ski this area intentionally. The signage was very similar to the signage for yellow slopes at Zermatt, which are in bounds. So I erroneously assumed that this was in bounds. I realized as I was doing it that it was hors piste. Fortunately, there were a fair amount of others doing it, so I was able to chat with them along the way. I went back the next day and filmed the opening scene where it looks like I did it intentionally!
      As far as other skis, yes, they certainly would've come in handy in this terrain. If I know I'm going into this type of environment, I'm totally down for more appropriate skis.

      @SkiBoyNY.  Před 9 měsíci

      Totally agree. I did have the trail map, but this area wasn't on it. I thought it was when I decided to go there. I actually initially mistakenly thought the area was in bounds when I went. I shot the opening of the video where I mention it as being hors piste the next day!

    How did you film it

    • @SkiBoyNY.
      @SkiBoyNY.  Před rokem +1

      I filmed the action shots with the Insta360 One X2 camera and its invisible selfie stick screwed into my ski pole - the way I describe in this video: czcams.com/video/fhU9Z9lhzQs/video.html.
      There were a couple of overhead action shots where I stuck the selfie stick into my backpack. The speaking shots were either with the Insta360 One X2 or my phone's camera.

    Respect & nice shots ….BUT….. People who are watching this…Do NOT try this. !!! Because lots of you need to be or rescued out etc etc… -- Never ever use Piste ski’s & going off piste ?? And without a guide ????? Sorry but this combination is 1 of the things we often see in the mountains…and the aftermath……Is not oke….cheers ⛷🎿💪🏻

      Thanks for the comment, and I totally agree. I filmed the opening segment the day after I skied it and should have mentioned that I actually skied this area by accident. I didn't know it was hors piste when I skied it because although it definitely looked better to me than the mogul slope, it was marked very similarly to the way Zermatt marks its yellow slopes. I was at Zermatt the week before. Had I known it was hors piste at the time, I would have chosen the mogul slope for all the reasons that you mention! Fortunately, I was able to navigate my way out with the help of many others who were skiing the same terrain.
