I wish he lived closer. I'd hire him in a heartbeat to do work on my truck.
Same here... we have an 03 Mountaineer V8. It was really tough finding a competent and honest shop.
Thought about loading up my expedition. Would give him 6 months worth of vids
I think that block heater will outlive the truck, welcome to the rust belt.
corvettefan91 it very well might but my goal is to take this truck as long as I can.
The wife just heard the intro music and asked “wtf is broken now- whatcha fixing?” Hahahaha
So a while back I asked for advice about my coolant leaking and wanted to let you know what happened. There was a crack in the thermostat which had to be replaced. Runs perfectly now and I thank you all for your experience & knowledge.
Grew up in Wyoming, the block heater is an absolute must . Ive had with and without and you can 100% tell the difference .
best ford tech ever
Damn that newer model truck looks older than the older model.i think a heater is the least of the owners worries lol.
The touch of a surgeon.
Precise and spot on.
"Erraughaaaeeeeearghaaugheee"
Coworkers: "Brian must be draining antifreeze again..."
Great video - I live in western Canada. We live and die by our block heaters. It's the only way to get oil moving when it's -40F/C.
Oh boy that’s nuts!
🤣🤣🐎
@@FordTechMakuloco nuts could be living where it's colder outside than the freezer inside
Oh man, absolutely critical. January/February in Alberta. So cold.
Absolutley simplified just the way we like it. Thanks again.
Best Ford Tech ever! I learned everything from him.I just installed my own Ford 5.4 -engine by watching his videos. 1- 15 -2022
I'm in Florida but watched it just for the fun of it...Awesome step by step video Brian 👍
This is the best video that I’ve seen that explains it very thoroughly. Thank you!!!
Thanks for another great video ! Because of channels like this I have never spent a single dime paying mechanics on repairs or maintenance. And if I did have to pay someone I wouldn't hesitate for a second bringing my Truck to you.
Seeing all the rust makes me happy I live in Louisiana. I see vehicles from the mids 90s with with zero rust.
"I have been one of your subscribers for a few years and, since you are familiar with Fords , I am curious will a Ford Fusion 17 inch rim fit on a 2005 Taurus Station Wagon, I want to upgrade to a better rim instead of the average 2005 style rims that were introduced in the Taurus during that year....I do most of my own maintenance since I bought it in 2017,and have been fixing it up and replacing all kinds of regular maintenance parts like alternator, starter and have upgraded to ceramic brakes, and replaced the belt tensioner, and I do my own oil changes, and transmission oil changes, and replaced spark plugs to iridium plugs, and new plug wires and replaced speakers, and so far so good, but I have more to do,and I have switched all lights, and interior lights to LEDs." Your videos have been very helpful, and,all I can say is you have been very knowledgeable, in teaching me how to do maintenance on my Ford's I have a 1993 Mazda Navajo,(Ford Explorer) that I am also restoring, and a 1994 Ford Ranger but, being that I used to help run a Body Shop in the 80s in Kansas,I am trying to do something with the rims that I have an eye on, that would look good on the Taurus but I want to keep the Ford style but, have it look different, that's all." Inventive minds create great results,Thanks"
I recently purchased a 2001 ford expedition, I had planned the block heater install around the time I was going to flush the coolant before winter. So that worked out
I was going to install one on my 2009 f150 5.4. Now you gave me great directions now I can do it Thanks
Remember " Rust never sleeps", at least according to Neil Young.
Hello bro, Just want to say that I find you an outstanding mechanic and I enjoy your videos. Thank you so much for all you do and please never stop posting your videos because I find them very educational. TommyBoy.
seriously, props to you bois up north. those winters sound brutal... west Tennessee aint so bad
Thank you for the helpful video! I just bought one of your hoodies for a friend of mine. He needed a black hoodie for the gym and yours looked cool. Thanks again for making these helpful videos!
My dad ordered our 1990 Bronco with a block heater - $25 option when he filled out the order form.
We still live in Texas, btw. Haha.
Always a learning experience with your video content great job!!
I put a 600w Kat's block heater in the '00 4.3V6 block I installed in a '89 S10 Blazer. That worked fantastic. Had warm air out the vents immediately.
I had a carburetor on that one, so that helped on those below zero mornings (never failed to start with the manual choke when away from power - just made it warm up 100x faster). Made my wife happy! She does just shy of 70 miles a day commuting, and is perpetually cold ... even in summer sometimes. 😂
Great video, commentary and editing! Thanks for this!
Great videos. Great attention to detail. Thank you!
This seems like a good time to stick a garden house some where and flush the system with that freeze plug out. Great video! I always wondered if this could be done.
Nice way to help the engine last longer.
Thank you for making another great video!!!!!
That laugh was spot on, Best part of the whole video 😅
Very well explain. I love watching this videos.
Great video.. keep them coming.
I've never seen a truck rusted that bad to not be that old...y'all got it bad up there..WOW !!
Thanks for sharing anyway..see you on the next one. Cheers friend 🍻🍻🍻🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Good tutorial and demonstration on installation
North western Canada here and every new vehicle in the last 40 years came from factory with a block heater.
Thanks for sharing Bro👍
Thanks Brian!!
The best video EVER! THANK YOU!
Thanks man for the video - I was wanting to put one in on my 03 F150 4.6
Had to chuckle when you were pulling the frost plug out doing the frost plug dance been there done that.
Yeah they can be a pain sometimes plus the camera was right there so I didn't want to knock it down.
@@FordTechMakuloco all that with out getting a bloody knuckle at the same time lol.
Another great video. But I'm glad this came equipped on my Northland Edition '02 F150.
Great videos
Ford had a cooling system bypass recall on 96-98 Taurus and sable 2v 3.0 motors. Had to remove freeze plugs on a bunch of motors in an attempt to clean out all the rust crap in those blocks. As I recall, lots o f those frost plugs were mostly rusted through from the inside. That coolant looked like muddy water. We had to water flush, that motor, followed by an acid flush as part of the recall, along with the install of a head bypass hose and restriction orifice. Those were the dirtiest cooling systems I ever encountered
Perfect. I'm including you in my will. But uh, I wouldn't get too excited.
Nice!! Great video... :-)
Another great video! Damn, I could never live where cars rust apart like this. (Off topic, but the rust underneath is discouraging)
I’m So Cal, we have undersides that look like new 20 years later)
Agreed! I live in San Diego and was amazed at how much rust and corrosion is on that truck. I have an 85 Nissan pickup with absolutely no rust on it. Thanks again for another great video, Brian.
I need to do this on my 1997 P71. Wow that’s a really rustic F150😂 makes my 1988 look really good😂🤣
Great video
WOW~!!! "Get in there and clean it up really well." Well~!!!! Not the word good~!!!! Somebody was paying attention in high school~!! Kudos~!!! You like the Oring seal better than the press-fit with locktite 609??
Would this be a good time to perform a coolant flush procedure?
Good vid..thanks pal!
Perfect
Your directions were clear and helpful. I do wish, tho, that you had been clearer on how to properly burb the system. Too many times I've heard warnings about the 50 shades of internal damage without properly burping, but then no shows and explains how and what causes IMproper burping.
Another awesome video!! I go through withdrawals waiting for the next vid. My wife says I'm nutzoid ... I say she's jealous!!
Thank You
word of caution when replacing existing block heaters (they will eventually corrode and fail)... there is nothing stopping the nut from coming off when you back the bolt out, so don't back the bolt out too far. I lost a block heater nut into my cummins. It hasn't caused any problems but not something you want to do if you can help it.
Wow got salt? Great video as always
Let me start off by saying I live in Florida and have lived in Florida my whole life I know about block heaters in diesel motors but this is the 1st time I ever heard they actually used them in gas motors as well lol
Remember " rust never sleeps".
Do you not need to worry about the grit from cleaning the rust off going into the opening once the cover is removed?
I am so thankful I live in a place where we don't have to use salt very often.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family. Thanks for your videos.
Do you have any videos on the 3.0 2018?
I have been wanting to do this on my 2004 F-250 6.0L. I looked to see if it was the same setup as F-150. I found that there was a block heater already installed! Do all the F-250 Super Duty’s have them pre-installed?
Now i see what that thing is! Wyoming!
Hi there. Do your kit come with two bolts and a bushing? I didn’t hear you explain about those if thy were included. Thx
Would tapping the freeze plug work on a 2004 5.4 2valve in my F350? I actually just bought a Ford block heater from my dealer and would like to install it ASAP....would mine go in the drivers side also?
Is there a link to the OEM block heater you mentioned that would be even better?
Very easy to overtighten, I had to get another.
Always wondered how these worked. Living in the deep south, we don't use them
I live in Georgia and use one on my diesel f250
Jersey here I work on a fleet of e450s I never understood why we have them in the buses iguess it came standard
@@keikun6969original lagrange and newnan north it gets pretty chilly. Atlanta can be super cold but bham is great
I'm in NC and I want one for freezing weather.
Does this process work for the 6.8 v10?
Does this also apply to the 6.8 V10?
A little dielectric grease when you plug the cord into the block heater will help keep the moister out.
Yup I threw some xg-12 grease on there.
What happens if a mechanic does a rush job (out of customers view) knocking the freeze plug into the block, and leaves it there after installing the block heater?
Thank you so much !! Sure as hell i wood have put it in wrong............................... Take Care.
To pull a freeze plug I put a dry-wall screw into it, and pull it with a claw hammer. If the screw strips out I use a bigger screw the next attempt.
But why when this method works so well?
I have installed 2 of these, same brand, torqued perfectly. After the engine gets to temp it pushes out a few mm and leaks. Not sure what to do now, maybe just plug it with a regular block plug? Any other ideas?
Where are you located at in Chicago? I'm also a dealer Tech and I recently started my own channel as well to cover not only Ford but other vehicles that come into the dealership also.
Do you have any videos on preventing rust?
how much coolant and water did you need to refill it approximately?
Would you recommend a little dielectric grease on both ends of the connectors?
Cord to heater connection I put a small amount of xg-12 grease.
Great video! I'm surprised you aren't using an Airlift to fill the cooling system.
Generally on the modular engine bleed out pretty quick all by themselves.
I have an 07 F150 5.4. I have a slight vibration when is going into overdrive sometimes. I have to be turning a certain way it's almost impossible to recreate. It feels like those little bumps on the side of the road when you run off the road it feels exactly like that for about a second and then it goes away as his changing gears. It almost never happens if I'm pulling a trailer. Only when the truck has no load does it do it mostly
Is that batter then the ones that stick in the bottom of the oil pan?
Nice Job , I sure would need to get use to working on those RUSTY Vehicels.
I just got me a new snap on hood light . How do you like the Milwaukee to the snap on ?
Nothing beats the Milwaukee light.
Wow -- so glad I'm not in the rust belt. What's the average age of cars/trucks there? By the time the car note is paid, it's time for a new one. I happily have 255,000 rust free miles on my '03 Expedition.
Anything over 10 years old is junk in the rust belt.
I’d used dielectric grease to prevent the electrical contacts for corrosion prevention.
Yup I do the same thing.
Is this the same install for a 1993 F450 7.3 Diesel IDI
Does this go to 05 Ford explorer 4.6 as well
So what does a block heater do to fluid change intervals? I don't drive every day maybe once a week. So leaving it -plugged in 24 / 7 would that concentrate the radiator fluid and oil? Making the changing of fluids sooner a must?
David E.S. Won't matter. The coolant doesn't get half as warm as when the engine is running.
here in quebec canada; the stuff comes ALWAYS stock
actually I also have a heater battery and oil pan heater so 1100W total
Yeah he had those too.
Will this fit the 2V V10?
Hey there, do you have a video for the Ford 5.0. I've got a 1995 with the small block. I'll be going to Idaho soon from Florida. Thank you
❤
I didnt get the the brand you recommend. I picked one up from the local parts store and the one that says fits was a thread in type. 06 f150. Not sure if you'd know off the top of your head if there's a place for that
A Lady's foot and a pair of Vice Grips if required, works much easier to remove the freeze plug.
Punch a hole in the freeze plug with the pointy end of the Lady's foot, then use the claw side to leverage the freeze plug out. If you have a problem with getting the plug, use the Vice Grips.
Surprised you don't use a vacuum coolant system bleeder to install the coolant and purge the air on re-installation of the coolant.
Yeah it would of been much easier with the camera not in the way too.
What's the correct time length to plug these in b4 you take off driving. How much time does it need to properly heat the block or fluids up? 2 hours or leave it in all night? Can you burn out the heater plug if you leave it plugged in too long?
snowsolo you can leave it on 24/7 if you want but I've been told after a few hours the coolant will be as warm as it's going to get.
I remember when I was just starting to be a mechanic, I did a freeze plug on a Pontiac, and it came out easy. Inserting the new one, I just couldn't get it to work. Everytime I would get the plug started and try to tap it in, it would pop all the way into the water jacket. So then I'd insert another freeze plug, and the same thing, and then again. I think I had about 3 or maybe 4 freeze plugs inside the water jacket before I got one to stay where it was supposed to. Car never overheated or acted strange in any way, so I left it as it was.
Brian wanted to ask you what’s up with the Sign next to your computer says unlimited miles three-year warranty
That is the Ford remanufactured powertrain components warranty.
I will say this! Just tried to install one using a regular 8mm allen wrench. Good luck! Buy the 10 dollar set and save yourself from trying to do this by hand. You can’t! That plug is “in” there!!
Where can I find the block to frame ground? 2004 4.6l f150
So glad Montana spreads sand and not salt.
