I'm not really a fan of the styling of the fusion but... It should have been, 1st: Hyundai Sonata 2nd: Ford Fusion 3rd: Honda Accord 4th: Subaru Legacy/Nissan Altima (Can't chose 5th: Chevy Malibu 6th:Toyota Camry
There's no way a beige Camry with steal wheels and a floaty suspension is a better family sedan than the Ford Fusion. I find it hard to believe the transmission in the new Fusion is so bad that they'd rather give up the handling, style, and features of the Fusion SEL in favor of a car that is basically a big cushy teddy bear on wheels (which I'm well aware some people want, but hello...this is Motor Trend here! Where's the driver involvement in a Camry LE?).
Hyundai sonata is the overall winner here. So their only con was the headroom in the back? This car has the most power with no v6, The most options even for a base model like standard Xm radio, Bluetooth, steering wheel radio/phone controls, best gas mileage(better than camry, Honda & Nissan) cheaper, best warranty. etc... I wonder how much money ford & Toyota paid him to be biased against Hyundai. lol #facts.
Yup exactly the decision you would expect from a man who hikes his pants to his pecks and looks like he's wearing adult diapers. The Hyundai is the best one of the bunch IMO too
Yes Sir I myself is an owner of an '03 mpreza WRX, the best handling car i've ever owned. This Legacy should perform similarly nonetheless, although it will be a lot more nose-heavy... we live in Upstate NY here, so AWD is really a necessary, and it's good to have a compact sedan without really thinking what the weather is outside. cheers!
I have a 2010 Ford Fusion with this 2.5 engine and I have 202K miles as I use it as a Taxi in Atlanta! I would say this is the best car I have ever owned for reliability and LOW maintenance! I still get 23MPG in town all the time! It's comfortable for LONG periods of time at once! I can drive this car for 8 hours straight and not be hurting. It handles like a German car in the corners and never had any problems except CV axles and 1 transmission! I would buy this car time and time again because it's been such a great little car and customers seem to feel it's cabin is bigger than a Crown Vic! I would however buy the manual SEL trim if possible!
you know we always drool over comparos like lamborghini vs. ferrari....and zr1 vs 911 turbo...but i always look forward to these comparos as well.....very down to earth...
What about Mazda6? That's a neat car. I'd also like to see similar comparisons of different kinds of crossovers, small cars, etc. Just to see how they stack up.
your comment remids me of the scene in The Devil Wears Prada where streep gives her assistant the history of the color of her sweaterand how it went from a fashion show ground breaker to a clearance rack in some department store. cls to sonata ha!
What a joke. In at least 4 other reviews, including Motorweek's the Sonata was number 1 with the Camry a distant 3rd or more. I wonder how it is that these guys could get it so wrong.
@v1per808 I just want to remind you that though Nissan's V-6 does produce more power than Ford's V-6, it's a LOT rougher and noisier (in a bad way). Almost everyone criticizes the 370Z for horrible noise and ride quality, a lot due to the rough engine. The Infiniti G37 and M37 are a little better, but not much. Ford may not have pushed their's to reach similar output, but at least it's a lot smoother
Its funny because when you compare a car like Camry/Fusion to Sonata, it just blows it out of the water. Best fuel economy, more hp, better interior, better exterior. This is from a loyal nissan person. Hyundai has really stepped up its game.
Toyota Camry is an American favourite. With its status as an American-made car, the Camry could even be called an American icon. Inarguably.July 2010, the Toyota Camry is easily America's best-selling car.
In general, I agree with his presentation. No, the Camry isn't stylish in ANY way, but, it's a good package. It gets decent mileage, it's roomy, rides well, and is easy to use. The Camry does everything that most driver's demand of it with aplomb.
How much did Toyota pay them to make them #1???? Should have been the Sonota.... looks a hell of a lot better and more powerful... They got the nissan right though... hate it!
Did you know Toyota had the most recalls out of any brand in the year 2012? 5.3 million. And Honda had the second most recalls in 2012, 3.4 million. Ford only had 1.4 million recalls in 2012. I thought Honda and Toyota were supposed to be reliable? What happened there huh? lol
I have never been able to trust MotorTrend reviews, their car of the year is bought almost every single year and everyone knows it, Automobile and Car and Driver are much better. But if you ask me the Sonata should have came first with the accord and fusion afterward.
Definitely. I do wish that Motor Trend had the previous generation of the Hyundai Sonata as a means of giving it a fond farewell and tested Kia Optima as a means of giving a good balance between the Korean (Kia and Hyundai) and Japanese car companies (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Subaru.)
@CrashJSTest I disagree. And no, I was not saying that because my favorite car didn't win, but because they have no real logic behind their reasons. They praised the Subaru's features and fuel economy yet placed it 5th because of its look? The same goes for the Accord. I personally prefer Edmunds and KBB which is why I will no longer watch an MT videos.
Conclusions: 1) NO true petrol-head would make a lifeless beige SOFA #1. Epic Fail. 2) This gentleman's pants indicate he either suffered from a massive weggie prior to the shoot OR Steve Urkel is his stylist Well produced video though.
Agreed... its unfortunate that a few people who have no idea how to drive or react in an emergency situation. The Toyota failures were far less than what anyone running six sigma would shoot for, especially if you take out accidents due to driver error. This is just going to turn into another Audi 5000 accelerator situation, where the media sensationalizes a minor problem, and Toyota will suffer for it.
Don't forget the Fukushima Power plant failure too. All those eradiated Japanese cars coming here. Pregnent women must take note as they can miscarry from being around eradiated elements.
Damn hyundai focused a lot more towards sportiness (handling, power, and fuel consumption). I wish it could have also focused on ride quality too. 3rd place is not what i expected. :(
Toyota can use the help. they make great cars and because a few people dont understand that when the car starts to accelerate you need to hit the brake or put it in neutral and all hell breaks loose. imagine this kind of situation going on in the 60's or 70's with carburated cars. they'd laugh at anyone who had a faulty carb and send them to get it fixed.
I think the Camry get's a bit more criticism than it deserves. I don't think the family car segment is meant for fun driving or handling. If you want that, you're better off looking at say the family coupe segment (the new Mustang for instance, drives pretty well). The Camry is made to be undramatic. If you criticize the Camry for being simplistic, you can do the same with the Rolls Royce Phantom, which literally has 3 gear selections (park, reverse, drive) and one knob for the radio.
Pretty much saw this coming. Ive been a subscriber to MT since I was 12 (now 34), and they've always had a major soft spot for Toyota and BMW. Sure they're good, but I think sometimes MT's opinions are a little biased. I commend Hyundai tho for getting in the top 3. Great job for such a new redesign. But my 96 Bonneville SSEi still beats them all. LOL
good job motortrend, very great review. Guess its family standards, no running through the cones or quarter mile eh.. lol ANYWAY for family car review for typical family personals
@crashjstest I understand what you are saying, but I still believe that the accord looks fairly new due to its modern styling and as for the camry, its style may be "timeless" but it is still getting old and dull.
the thing to see here is all these cars are built differently angled to apeal to different people. Like me the AWD to the Subaru is very important. to others its size, performance, price, styling. so quit arguing like a buncha kids.
Hey cladimere, speakin' of bias; how long you been with Toyota Corp? C'mon the Camry is beige on beige boring. The Accord offers the more spirited experience but since I live where it rains & snows, I would still take the Subie (or Audi or Merc) & AWD
This is Obviously a JOKE! Take the oldest Design and the car with the most problems and the worst cabin materials and call it a WINNER? This to me is NOTHING but a PLUG because someone feels bad for TOYOTA. In an unbias opinion the winner hands down should of been the Sonata. Nothing was even mentioned about Affordability and the best MPG and the best POWER and the LONGEST WARRANTY THese are things to consider also in the best family sedan. LANE REVIEW AND RESULTS!
@112 Most people do (obviously) - The car is great, but in a family sedan of this caliber people are looking for something reliable, and you know as well as I that the Passat is anything but reliable.
Hyundai FTW. It's the best looking of the bunch and has a great engine. Fusion would have been next. The Camry is a bit boring. There's nothing that makes you really want the Camry over any other sedans.
@paradoxdesigns Toyota doesn't need any the help. Sales are up almost 50% this month. Actually, earlier carbureted Toyotas did have problems with their fuel delivery systems...specifically vapor lock situations.
@v1per808 Probably the interior quality. Actually, the Nissan DID in fact have the most quiet ride of all the cars here; I think it's just starting to get a bit long in the tooth. There's nothing really fancy like Ford SYNC or Hyundai's great I-4. The Camry definitely shouldn't have won, and I think the Nissan should have been higher, but it's still not good enough to take first place.
I'd get the Subaru, Honda or Nissan I'd even consider the Fusion and probably look at the Hyundai since Hyundai and Ford have been working the hardest at improving quality and its really starting to show. Toyota must have sponsored this. I like how they judged it off of different standards than everyone else. Also where's Mazda??? they didn't even compare every car in the price range and category.
There comes the real world numbers: 1. Hyundai Sonata. 2. Honda Accord. 3. Nissan Altima. 4. Toyota Camry. 5. Subaru Legacy. 6. Ford Fusion. 7. Chevy Malibu.
@v1per808 Well..., you have a point by saying with, the Mazda6. That's the reason why, they don't include the Mazda6 in most comparisons because, they know, it's going to win. Now, with the N. Altima..., I'd say, it's the best handling car out of the bunch, also...but, not the quickest! Remember..., not of these cars are the "top of the line" versions. If they would've been..., Ford would've involved it's Sport version of the Fusion...in which, would've made it VERY hard for the others!
@BklynJayL I think they will make it when completion forces them to. Look at the camaro and mustang for example. Chevy did it first and basically forced Ford to redo the engine for the v6 and the v8. When the Mid size sedans follow suit with the altimas price range, u can expect it.
@drc1981 Yeah, I'm with you on this. As far as I can tell, they said it was best because it was easy to get into and had a basic radio, and it was the best at solving a problem that shouldn't exist, and doesn't in any of the others. Toyotas may never fall apart, but they're some of the most bland cars on the road, and they aren't even all that efficient, which is their best selling point beyond that they don't fall apart, which isn't always true.
(cont) Also, as for it being "bland and boring," I think there is a peacefulness about its undramatic theme. Yes, I'm really sticking up for Camry. I would rather have a Chevy Malibu at this segment, but the Camry does deserve the place it got.
@FrostedCold seriously, why did the camry win. and even the altima. they highly underrated it. i have one and love it because its the best balance of everything. but only 07-09
the Sonata should have won, its the most near luxury and best looking
😂 Worse built and most unreliable.... My have words been eaten
I'm not really a fan of the styling of the fusion but...
It should have been,
1st: Hyundai Sonata
2nd: Ford Fusion
3rd: Honda Accord
4th: Subaru Legacy/Nissan Altima (Can't chose

Damn! His waist line is on his mid torso.
@Luis Salgado lmao
There's no way a beige Camry with steal wheels and a floaty suspension is a better family sedan than the Ford Fusion. uh hyundai actually stands above honda in jdp power's dependibility ranking of 2011
Hyundai sonata is the overall winner here. So their only con was the headroom in the back? camry is shit sonata should of won
Really like the styling of Hyundai Sonata... sporty and luxury
Yup exactly the decision you would expect from a man who hikes his pants to his pecks and looks like he's wearing adult diapers. The Hyundai is the best one of the bunch IMO too
@cladimere I was looking at that but it seems like they are going to make all the cars look the lancer?
Yes Sir I myself is an owner of an '03 mpreza WRX, the best handling car i've ever owned. couldn't expect these guys to announce anything else other than the Camry. there car of the Year in 07 teh
HYUNDAI SONATA #1 For Soul !
you know we always drool over comparos like lamborghini vs. ferrari....and zr1 vs 911 turbo...but i always look forward to these comparos as well.....very down to earth...
Which one got the best mpgs?
What about Mazda6? That's a neat car. I'd also like to see similar comparisons of different kinds of crossovers, small cars, etc. Just to see how they stack up.
tell me about a situation where your going to want to storm off accelerating after you need to slam the brakes?
I agree with you! It is different but dangerously similar!
your comment remids me of the scene in The Devil Wears Prada where streep gives her assistant the history of the color of her sweaterand how it went from a fashion show ground breaker to a clearance rack in some department store.
cls to sonata ha!

the sonata is nice too, just wished they geared it higher
@wildbloodydragon Taurus is a full-size vehicle, this video reviews midsize.
what if da pedal gets stuck
the buick regal gs,g37,evo,wrx sti, ford fusion twin turbo
all of these r confterbal n fast
I wonder if Brakes that actually Work is an extra option?
Wore the pants like my 80 year old grandpa and picked the car that he would pick. Seems like a pattern. Have fun with your boat named "Camry" sir!
How much did Toyota pay them to make them #1???? Should have been the Sonota.... looks a hell of a lot better and more powerful... They got the nissan right though... hate it!

The guy's tucked in shirt is higher than the empire state building
@DisposableWarrior uhh you do know that these cars are like 28000 while your audi s4 is like 45000 right?
or lower, i always mix it up, its the one that improves accel
As a mechanic camry deserves first place and the accord second. The rest are equal
Definitely. I do wish that Motor Trend had the previous generation of the Hyundai Sonata as a means of giving it a fond farewell and tested Kia Optima as a means of giving a good balance between the Korean (Kia and Hyundai) and Japanese car companies (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, and Subaru.)
best selling cars in America July 2010
#1 Toyota Camry
#2 Toyota Corolla
#3 Honda Accord
#4 Honda Civic
@cladimere I wonder what they are going to do with the Gallant, They should make a 2012 Diamante
@CrashJSTest I disagree. And no, I was not saying that because my favorite car didn't win, but because they have no real logic behind their reasons. They praised the Subaru's features and fuel economy yet placed it 5th because of its look? The same goes for the Accord. At 5:57 you can tell the Fusion is in second place if you look in the bottom right corner.
I don't ever remember hearing that the CTS-V is based on the Holden Commodore. I may be wrong though.

motor trend videos are the best of the us based motoring journalists, rivals those Europeans... keep up the good work
Don't forget the Fukushima Power plant failure too. All those eradiated Japanese cars coming here. Pregnent women must take note as they can miscarry from being around eradiated elements.
@Stevenhiggles When is Nissan's suppose to make this engine?
Damn hyundai focused a lot more towards sportiness (handling, power, and fuel consumption). I wish it could have also focused on ride quality too. 3rd place is not what i expected. :(
Why isn't the Mazda6 included in this conpassion?
If he is going to complain about a lack of any kind of manual shifting he should look at the sport trim level. It has paddle shifters and AWD to boot.
@singhn77 because they didnt redesign the camry for 2010! Only new models compete for car of the year and I think the camry is from 2008!
@Vallecaucanisimo
hard to pick with the choices given. i'd get sonata turbo or legacy gt for their performance potential.
That Subaru Legacy with its unique powertrain and the best symmetrical AWD ever created should've taken the spot too. go Scooby !
The presenter quality himself is poor.
Why did he say the accord has aged design? Wasn't it 08 when it got redesigned? The cry has the older design it's been that way since 06 or 07
how the hell the Accord came in 4th lol wow....
I think the Camry get's a bit more criticism than it deserves. I don't think the family car segment is meant for fun driving or handling. I think that Motor Trend should have added the Kia Optima for good measure with the Korean car companies.
So let me get this straight. The Hyundai is the best looking, best performing with the best fuel economy and it gets 3rd place? Bang up job.
@aznboi198 I don't blame you.
at 5:59 you can see in the bottom left corner that the ford fusion was in second place
wow motor trend dropped the ball on this one. I kinda remember something about the Ford Fusion being 2010 MOTOR TREND CAR OF THE YEAR
@M1GreenEagle agreed. should have been mentioned. the 6 rocks.
@igotwhips Unfortunatley, but they need to re design their cars to make them more modern so they stand out
can't go wrong with any of those cars if you're in the fam sedan market
Pretty much saw this coming. Ive been a subscriber to MT since I was 12 (now 34), and they've always had a major soft spot for Toyota and BMW. the editing and setting of this video had "top gear wannabe" written all over it.
where is mazda 6!!
the thing to see here is all these cars are built differently angled to apeal to different people.

Comparison sponsored by Toyota obviously.

I really like the new Sonata.
@112
Most people do (obviously) - The car is great, but in a family sedan of this caliber people are looking for something reliable, and you know as well as I that the Passat is anything but reliable.
mpgomatic got 39 mpg hwy in the 4 cylinder 2011 hyundai sonata
I'd still take the Fusion. Other than the new Sonata it's the best looking car here imo.
Plus, they did just give it the coty award. >.>
@trinoma88 Kia motors may be an affiliate of Hyundai 10 years ago, but not anymore. 2 separate Korean car makers
Hyundai FTW. It's the best looking of the bunch and has a great engine.
Fusion would have been next.
The Camry is a bit boring. There's nothing that makes you really want the Camry over any other sedans.
I dont consider it a bad thing either, I like the lines of a four door coupe
Camry is not from the same class of others. Toyota's car for that class is the Avensis dunno if its sold in America tho.
@paradoxdesigns
Toyota doesn't need any the help. Sales are up almost 50% this month.
Actually, earlier carbureted Toyotas did have problems with their fuel delivery systems...specifically vapor lock situations.
I like the music
@v1per808 Probably the interior quality. Actually, the Nissan DID in fact have the most quiet ride of all the cars here; I think it's just starting to get a bit long in the tooth. There's nothing really fancy like Ford SYNC or Hyundai's great I-4. The Camry definitely shouldn't have won, and I think the Nissan should have been higher, but it's still not good enough to take first place.

Toyota must have sponsored this. I like how they judged it off of different standards than everyone else.
Also where's Mazda??? they didn't even compare every car in the price range and category.
The Camry won? I've lost some respect for Motortrend.
There comes the real world numbers:
1. Hyundai Sonata.
2. Honda Accord.
3. Nissan Altima.
4. Toyota Camry.
5. Subaru Legacy.
6. Ford Fusion.
7. Chevy Malibu.
Wow, the beige Toyota appliance won...
I would never buy one of those appliances, I want a car with a personality.
@v1per808 Well..., you have a point by saying with, the Mazda6. That's the reason why, they don't include the Mazda6 in most comparisons because, they know, it's going to win. Now, with the N.
I would rather have a Chevy Malibu at this segment, but the Camry does deserve the place it got.
is there any chance that even though there was a small recall for toyota, they are still amazing cars.... a lot better than many of these cars
Looks like the Honda Accord interior design team was quite inspired by the 1989-199X Pontiac Grand Prix layout. BUTTONS EVERYWHERE! Durrrr.
@FrostedCold seriously, why did the camry win. and even the altima. they highly underrated it. i have one and love it because its the best balance of everything. but only 07-09
