We are only small dairy farmers Piet but we switched many years ago, at about 5 weeks of age they go into groups of 3 calves to a group. We fed calves in hutches for 8 or 9 weeks for 30 years and I think you will be very happy and will never go back. We find the growth to be better than before in individual hutches. I always love when I find another Dutch family on a dairy. I was born on a dairy in SoCal 70 years ago. They're all gone now. The main thing is Jesus. If you know Him, you're all set.
We Group house.
Bedding in calf pens and maternity pens are the key to managing group pens. Stop the issues before issues enter the calf pens.
Are you doing anything to help prevent cross suckling?
I found teat mob feeders work good, and if you leave them in pen for awhile after they are done you shouldn't have issues with sucking. Thanks for the videos!

I hope You all Your Family have a Happy, Health New Year Piet! I watch everyone of your videos, I find your a real interesting Guy to listen to and it amazes me how closely you watch how everything is done on your Dairy! You clearly run a very well managed and super clear Dairy!! Back in my working days I did Service Call on Farm Equipment and some of them were Dairy Farms. Some of the Dairies was such a pig sty it amazed me how the milk board didn’t pull there milk quota! Take Care Piet!!

The price of just about everything has gotten out of control.
I would be interested to hear what you do With the calves, how many are replacement heifers and what do you do with the bull calves?
I can talk about this in a future video! About 1/3 of our calves are holstein Heifers and 2/3 are beef cross calves. We have holstein bull calves on occasion. The holstein bull calves and beef cross calves are sold to 2 local farms and raised for beef.
I would like to know approx cow total on the farm and a break down of heifer, etc. I would also like to know all your breeds. I heard you mention Brown Swiss today. And is a red calf a genetic of Holstein?? Also what are the Blue cows I have seen in Europe?? Happy New Year.
We have just under 3,000 cows, heifers and calves on the farm. 1600 milking, 200 dry cows, 1150 heifers and calves. Red and white holsteins are a separate breed from black and white holsteins but are similarly as far as size and milk composition. Happy New Year!

How do you ensure the dairy is profitable?
There isn't one thing, but probably the most important things to focus on are cow comfort and nutrition.
