This young man has it all, a great feel, time, great solo ideas. Always in tune, has total command of the instrument. Bravo!!! Bob Sachs - professional bassist in Las Vegas
The pianOracle so greatly thanks his past self for having saving this rendition under his favorites... "Oh, THANK YOU!!! Past self..." & of course, thank you guys for these amazing pieces!!! Actual Proof is most undoubtedly one of my favorite pieces of all time.
When I was in eleventh grade I played trombone. The band director wanted me to switch to double bass. Told him to forget it. Fifty years later, and I'm trying to learn to play the double bass. Who knew?😕
OMG this kid looks like me when i was playing my brand x fender precision copy that i bought from the pawn shop in 1974. man it's uncanny. he's way better than i was though. this kid is amazing. makes me proud!
Damn, all tunes great, but really impressed by the last two the Shearing tune, that's a difficult head at that tempo and the Monk ballad at the end was really amazing the maturity in the soloing, plus in all track the great intonation, clarity and time feel.
Hi Steve. I became acquainted with Daryl by listening to Immanuel Wilkins and became a total fan! Discovering all this earlier stuff is a delight. As a young musician I cannot help but be inspired by his music.
And he knows not to do too much. Check out the way he ends Reflections. You can see him think about one last note or flourish and stops, and thinks better of it. Less is more!
He’s the drummer…. Off of the album that tune is from, “thrust” by Herbie, mike Clark is one of the innovators of linear drumming. Do a deep dive on mike Clark and Paul Jackson, thank me later
I clicked on this video and when it started i said to myself, "who is this scrawny little kid? Can he hold a double bass?" Here I am, blown away. Im impressed as hell, son. I look forward to hearing where you go from here.
He's auditioning for the Grammy Jazz Band. They make you give all of your info in the description and in the video so they can contact you if you got in
It's normally called a jazz duo, but this could refer to players improvising on any other two instruments. don't think that there is a term used exclusively for double bass and piano jazz.
Hi Itravail, Daryl is on one of New York Times 2022 Best Jazz Recording with Immanuel Wilkens Blue Note release 7th Hand and recently has been performing with Indie Rock Star Mac Demarco
@@stevejohns1135 Thanks for the reply. Shortly after wondering what the precocious kid is up to now, more recent videos started popping up in my YT feed. Thanks again for the update. I take it that he's related to you and that you're rightfully proud of the young man.
Very nice playing. Could have used more volume or be real nasty and beat your pianist and drummer into submission to playing softer. It can be done but you won't win any long lasting friendships. Best wishes.
Addendumb: When I said you needed more volume I was listening through the computer speaker - wrong. I casted the video through my TV and home stereo and the volume was fine, perfectly attuned to the double bass. You have long fingers, long arms and are tall - all you need to play fine double bass and you play fine, as do the pianist and drummer - fine work fellows. I had forgotten about that George Shearing tune -- I'll put that in my tune list. Shearing doesn't get the praise he deserves from jazzers sometimes.
Pulls his sleeve back between notes without missing a beat.
Great tone, great intonation, great playing. Jealous. Back to practicing.

Not only is this ridiculously good, but Mike Clark!! Man, this is awesome.
His pitch are maybe the most perfect one I've ever heard on doublebass before.
Good luck in life, Daryl

Sweet man! I recognized you from this Larry Coryell video. Best of luck!
even playin' Bilies's Bounce on the guitar took me a few hours...now try it on a double bass :O nice job!
Brilliant! Not everyone spends life on social media, some people play nice music instead :) Well Done!!! Cheers from Belfast N. Ireland
Nice !!!!
I was not expecting mike clark actually to be there
yo how did this not make it

Who would’ve guessed this guy would end up playing live with the Lemon Twigs and Mac Demarco
Wow
Great sound !
Can you tell what is your strings height with the velvets ?
Thanks
ya man

Damn that old dude can sure play funky drums

Can you tell us how you recorded this ? the sound is great for a live session !
Whats the very outro of Billies Bounce?

Daryl "big hands" Johns1
Yep. Give out personal info on youtube. I haven't heard that good of an idea since lawn darts.
He's auditioning for the Grammy Jazz Band. They make you give all of your info in the description and in the video so they can contact you if you got in
I was thinking the same thing! Grammy Jazz Band? More like, Grammy make me a sandwich, I'm hungry.
is there a particular genre of this jazz? like with the bass and piano?
It's normally called a jazz duo, but this could refer to players improvising on any other two instruments. don't think that there is a term used exclusively for double bass and piano jazz.
It's not a genre, just a format and a very common one, the piano trio. Don't forget the drummer!
its a trio the genre is like a bebop
bag's groove i love it
ah it's billies bounce not the bag's groove
Is this the Lemon Twigs bassist?
Yes Nate
@@stevejohns1135 epic
im sweating
Are those real gut strings? Sounds very dope!
I think Velvet brand strings, D and G could be real gut

Holy shit. I've got a lot of work to do
@myself get to it!

Listen to a lot of Charles Fambrough?
He came up around Broski!
Did you make it?
No
He was rejected because of a minor infractions from the last grammy band.
@@stevejohns1135 what was it?
5 thumbs down? What is there not to like? Are these people deaf or something?
I personally don't get the hype
looks like he's reading from a very tiny music stand
Nope
Fantastic Playing on Upright Bass and also on electric Bass.
Gold in Olympic but not one bar that goes to my heart.
This kid is extremely good, but you can't really hear him! Need more mic on the bass.
