that is true, until you come to the brain itself. the brain dont have any pain receptors. When you do brain surgery today you are often awake and you cant feel anyone touching your brain really. but when you are awake they can sense which part of your brain they are focusing on. for example if you have trouble speaking they are centered on your lobus frontalis. I work in a medical school library archives. We have several medical kits for various purposes (surgical, postmortem, etc.) and it's always fun to point out to visitors that the 19th century kits have bone or gutta percha handles and that blood and tissue would be caught in the grooves between the handle and the actual instrument, meaning that they could never really be cleaned or sterilized. Newer kits like this one are cast in one piece with the handles. Thank goodness for modern medicine.

A Trephine (sometimes called a Trepan) is used for 'Trepanning' or, cutting a hole in the skull. This was usually done on the battlefield in order to relieve pressure from bleeds on the brain usually due to subarachnoid haemorrhage due to severe concussions on the battlefields. It's also been known for bullets to be removed from the brain but the documentation on the use of this is very limited.
