  • High FPS camera views of the Apollo 14 launch on January 31, 1971. Sequences are shown at real speed and presented at 60fps.
Side-by-side views are shown first, with individual camera sequences at the end of the video.
Different sound sources are used to better match the footage: air-to-ground, cockpit audio, Saturn V sound.
Color was corrected for a more uniform presentation between the different camera angles.
Sound and image cleanup, conversion to original 24 fps frame rate, geometry and color correction by RetroSpace HD.

Apollo 14 (January 31 - February 9, 1971) was the eighth crewed mission in the United States Apollo program, the third to land on the Moon, and the first to land in the lunar highlands. It was the last of the "H missions", landings at specific sites of scientific interest on the Moon for two-day stays with two lunar extravehicular activities (EVAs or moonwalks).
Commander Alan Shepard, Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa, and Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell launched on their nine-day mission on Sunday, January 31, 1971, at 4:03:02 p.m. EST.
Shepard and Mitchell made their lunar landing on February 5 in the Fra Mauro formation - originally the target of Apollo 13. During the two walks on the surface, they collected 94.35 pounds (42.80 kg) of Moon rocks and deployed several scientific experiments. To the dismay of some geologists, Shepard and Mitchell did not reach the rim of Cone crater as had been planned, though they came close. In Apollo 14's most famous event, Shepard hit two golf balls he had brought with him with a makeshift club.
While Shepard and Mitchell were on the surface, Roosa remained in lunar orbit aboard the Command and Service Module, performing scientific experiments and photographing the Moon, including the landing site of the future Apollo 16 mission. He took several hundred seeds on the mission, many of which were germinated on return, resulting in the so-called Moon trees, that were widely distributed in the following years. After liftoff from the lunar surface and a successful docking, the spacecraft was flown back to Earth where the three astronauts splashed down safely in the Pacific Ocean on February 9.

This was the very first space flight of any kind I ever saw on tv. I was just 10 days shy of my 8th Birthday. I was walking through our living room and the tv was on. I saw the rocket on the pad, and something about it just grabbed me, so I sat down to watch. I was completely enveloped in the sight and sound of the launch, even on tv. Before they were even half way to orbit, I was transformed into a total NASA nerd. From that day forward, I made sure I was in front of the tv any time there was a new mission going on. I even faked being sick so I could stay home from school to watch Apollo 16 land on the moon in April of '72. I never missed a mission. From Apollo 14 all the way to about the 30th space shuttle mission, and then life got busy and I started missing them. But I always kept track of them in one way or another. But this one right here, Apollo 14 will always be a big favorite, because it was my very first exposure of any kind to NASA.

Magnificent. I never get tired of seeing the Saturn V liftoff.

NASA should be funded to take all of the best of the Apollo footage and have it color corrected and otherwise processed to original quality. This is historic stuff.

I was in 8th grade. The next year, I would meet my science teacher who worked with NASA from the beginning until this flight. After retirement, he became a high school teacher.

😱The shaking of umbilical connection from 8:21 to 8:24 make you realize how much power Saturn V had 😳 amazing footage 🚀

I watched the entire video of every angle, and my brain is still saying "So, a bright light will come out of the bottom of the pointy building, and then the building will levitate into the sky? Magic."

Nice! At 0:34 I’m just imagining the state of the pad had there been no water deluge system in place. I assume it would be very Boca Chica like 😂

Apollo 14 was the only Apollo Launch, the only Saturn V launch that I was at the Cape to see in person though from a distance of about 7 miles across the Banan River with some family. We made the trip from largo, FL on the west cost in the Tampa Bay area. I was home on leave from the Air Force from wich I separated in the summer of 1972. I was 20 yars old when I was at the Cape. that day.
I took some disappointing pics with a 110 pocket instamatic. The pics were disappointing because of the poor quality of the film and camaer and because there was alow cloud layer in which the rocket disappeared seconds after clearing the tower.. TV viewes had the views of remote telecopic cameras that tracked the rocket above the low clouds.
Even though the pics were disappointing, I am glad I was there that day to see that bit of history.

To be fair, it was similar for much of the astronaut corps. NASA made only four manned flights* between Apollo 17 in 1972 and the first flight of Shuttle in 1981 (I think).
      * IIRC, there were three missions to Skylab in 1973, and the ASTP in 1975.

I always thought it was kind of a dick move for Shepard to jump to the head of the line in front of all those guys.
