There's a theory that the entire film is a lie told by the Joker, a made up backstory and that this is current day Gotham where Batman is a present. To quote the Clown himself from the Killing Joke "if I'm to have a past, I'd prefer it to be multiple choice." I really like this theory and hope it's true
MMMMmmmm
Now that's a good theory
I think the theory is that some on the parts are a theory not all of it

i love how this scene shows that in the beginning of the movie, the therapist doesnt listen and has no interest in what he has to say- while he is trying to tell her everything thats wrong with him and what he needs help with. then at the end the therapist is yearning for him to say anything that can explain his new behavior- and he no longer wants to talk anymore.
She wouldn’t get it
One thing about Joker that isn't talked about is how great a representaiton of New York City it is. NYC is not Succession and "Sex and the city". It's Joker, Laws of Gravity and Kids. That said, the dynamic where early on the therapist doesn't care, but after he becomes a hardened criminal suddenly she wants to make a career out of him is SPOT ON how New York City public health services operate. When you're a regular person trying to get help they cant be bothered to look away from their cell phone and just fill out the required forms. After you've punched a cop in the face or have stabbed someone on the train, suddenly every therapist in the hospital wants their 30 mins with you so they can run to the media and tell their story of having met you.
@iamcase1245
...you know that's not the same therapist as earlier in the movie, right? The Social Worker was played by Sharon Washington. This is April Grace.
Also, given the sympathy the social worker had for Arthur in their last meeting, and the mountain of case files on her desk, I'm guessing she legit wanted to help Arthur, but was so overstretched that she really couldn't beyond getting the medication he needed.
@@popularvote3613 You're correct that they're different people but my point is still that it's a great representation of NYC's mental health services. I've had friends and family on both sides of mental health meaning before and after prison and it's always the same patter. There's all the resources in the world and everyone is looking to hear every word after you have to say AFTER you've committed a felony.
@@iamcase1245Just like Taxi Driver did
Once he started singing “that’s life” the filmmakers basically were setting up joke 2: the musical.
and part 2 is supposed to be a musical
You know, at this point even the song is only in his head.
Joke ahahaha

@@sunmal1599 when he is being transported in the cop car, he laughs tho
I noticed Joker has 3 types of laughs throughout the whole movie: (1) the laugh that he cannot control because of his medical condition, (2) the fake laugh when he mocks someone for trying to be funny, and (3) the genuine laugh when something IS funny.
1:34 I still get chills when hearing him chuckle through the lyrics. Joaquin Phoenix absolutely crushed the complex character of the joker.
For me as well, this ending scene just solidifies Joaquin Phoenix’s place as the joker. Love this ending.
@@Troy-je1kf The eyes lol
Yknow what gives me chills, is the fact he is doing the kubric stare to the social worker and shortly after kills her which is why he has blood on the soles of his shoes
I always liked the theory that the last scene with Joker in Arkham with the therapist was a reveal that he was telling that story to her the entire time of something that happened years ago.
At that moment he gets the revelation that the young kid he knew as Bruce Wayne is Batman, the same person responsible for his current, yet brief incarceration in Arkham. He laughs because he realizes that he was responsible for creating the very person that got him locked up.
But there is also a sense of power now because he realizes that Batman was HIS doing. Which is why they allude to him killing his therapist (seeing his blood stained footsteps was an amazing way to allude to that) and breaking out of Arkham because he now has a new purpose.
Man that's incredible I love this idea...such a layered film.
You are correct, that's cool
at the exact same time he became the joker, batman was created 🤯
In the script, after Joker says ''You wouldn't get it'' he was supposed to add ''This is between me and him''. That's a clue as to what made him laugh.
Would be a litte like the killing joke

There’s something really satisfying about this ending and I don’t know why
Maybe causs hes laughing from his happiness for the first time and not his condition
I guess cause he's finally happy that he took control of his life for once.
This is the first time in the movie he shows genuine happiness
What sastifying to me is that he realised he has experienced traumatic and finnaly released it all in one happiness of frustation, rather than being angry he decided to be happy because he realised how much he has fallen into a hole he cannot crawl out of.
Probably because in the end he shows that he was never “evil” for the sake of it, and he’s finally “himself”.
I know this is unlikely but I like to think that this scene takes place years later and Bruce has become batman already and Arthur is just connecting it all together and knows Bruce is batman
I think this is the right suggestion, if they do a second movie it will be based on that tbf
@RuKind he has grey hair in his stubble/hair, a feature that arthur didnt have previously. even if it was 20 years later, arthur was 34, meaning he'd be 54 upon release. not too far of a stretch tbh.

@@murderme6192it wouldn't need to be 20 years neither, 15 years after would make batman old enough to fight crime
My theory is that this is the joker some time after the events of the film where he has been locked up in a mental hospital for being the joker. I feel like he’s laughing at the fact that he was the reason batman was created, which is why it cuts to Bruce and his dead parents. A lot of people think that the whole movie was in his head but I only think some of it was, I think he genuinely did become the joker by killing Murray.
I think joker has supersanity because he’s singing that song
Wow thanks for sharing this theory! The most satisfying one I've read so far. Reminds me of Dark Knight where Joker says he won't be complete without Batman.
When the sequel comes out, it's gonna be absolutely huge. Breaking records.
Would be nice but I doubt it
Don’t think so seems they completely threw away the original idea and sold out
The brilliance of this movie is that it was filmed in New York which is indeed rapidly turning into Gotham City in 2024

The Wayne Family.
😇
🤣HAHAHA🤣
This was actually pretty good 🤣
So he knew about the Wayne killings? Did he orchestrate them? Will his puppets break into Arkhem to set him free?
You're almost as funny as Arthur🤣🤣🤣
This scene is so damn cool. This is definitely Arthur years in the future, most likely after Bruce becomes Batman and locks him away at Arkham yet again. He’s either realizing that Bruce is Batman and finds it hilarious that he was the reason for it, or he’s thinking of the joke about inmates and the flashlight from the killing joke. Either way it’s a great ending that’s so open for interpretation. They really got the Joker right here.
Eh not really I don't think this Joker has anything to do with thinking about Batman most likely he's just having about what he thinks happened that night to Bruce's parents and such. This character is less arch villain Joker and more just sympathetic crazy guy incel Joker which works here for an else world film.
You gotta remember he hated Thomas Wayne, so finding out that the Waynes were shot and killed in front of their son is hilarious too him. Batman coming out later gives him something else to aim his hate at.
Arthur would be in his 70s by the time Bruce became batman, can't really see him going toe to toe with him, Bruce need only blow on him to break his hip.

I believe it was all in his mind. That laughing & crying/emotional pain is characteristic of someone who goes in and out of episodes - I’ve been there.
When someone asks “why are you laughing?” (while faced with talking about difficult things) the thought of having to explain it all and knowing where to even start, it’s too exhausting and overwhelming, the emotion comes to the surface all at once (and suddenly the saying “if you didn’t laugh, you’d cry” comes to life) and you revert back to type instead. It’s easier sometimes, especially when dealing with authorities/organisations whose numbers, targets & pre-conceived ideas don’t allow individuals working for them to ever actually do their job properly, be able to allocate the time, care & resources into really hearing & helping someone - (which I’m sure Arthur references when he first meets his therapist.

joker and batman was born at the same day
How?
@@gravityrushfan299The Joker was born the minute he murdered Murray, and Batman was born the minute his parents were murdered by Joe Chill.
I think, someone might have already felt it, his smile gives weird emotion.
In movie, he has already laughed countless times, but it seemed little bitter.
However, by the end of the film, last scene ( he laughs at hospital) makes us feel relieved.
This is my interpretation; so far, JOKER has faced problems in life.
He has been marginalized by society, and his counselors never interested in his real problem;they just treated him formally.
So in last scene, JOKER says, "You wouldn't get it". This reflects how little society cares for the weak. 10909
I’ve always seen the joke as being chaos.
Chaos begetting chaos, pain begetting pain, and just through his own act of madness and liberation he helped creating a champion of order in Batman
Batman's not a champion of order. If he was, there wouldn't be a need for a mental institution. If order was intact, everyone would know their role in life and be happy knowing their place. But since it's not, hence the chaos....
Ok I think that joker learned the identity of Batman and that's why he says "you wouldn't get it" after we see bruce at 0:53 , he thinks this is funny because he created his worst enemy. ( I guess we'll never know)
You wouldn’t get it

When I talk about film with my freinds. Most of them they say we dont understand film very clearly and joker's last words of film is ''You wouldn't get it'' .I think that's a message to everyone !!!
From everything that happened to Arthur and everything that he did.
To “you wouldn’t get it”
The ending makes sense why the 2nd part is gonna be musical because joker thinks that way music makes his dream a structure.
You know the most weird thing? We hear that life song and it beggins to show us that credits are near BUT he starts singing too… all the film all music was supported with any real things that play it BUT this time we see that this music is in the joker head…
0:54 and thus on that tragic night, Society made the Joker, and the Joker made the Dark Knight
I kinda wish the physiatrist was Harely Quinn, but then again if he intended to kill her, it would work.
One of the all time Best films ❤
What’s scary is for people who have such fragile and bad mental health. People like myself. Who realise how easy it is to let that final thread snap and we lose it.
Maybe not on the level of the joker but it does scare me at times.
In my head, this is the joker’s predecessor, someone who’s actions led to the birth of the more modern joker by creating the primordial soup
I loathe the endless stream of comic book/superhero films but Joker was an extraordinary film imo Joaquin Phoenix delivered another outstanding performance
I like how he took control and put her in her place when he said " you wouldn't get it ''.... Classic
One of my favorite ideas to use batman for a joker movie is based off the really dark and twisted Joker comic book. Where you never really see Batman until the end and its Joker being chased by his shadow while exploring their inexplicable tie to each other. Dives into his madness, and deranged insanity that may push the limits of what they are trying to do but it would be a fascinating way of using Batman in this Joker universe
OMG, I cannot even begin to express my overwhelming emotions after watching the movie Joker 2019! It is hands down THE saddest film I have ever laid my eyes on, and boy, was it a heart-wrenching rollercoaster of emotions. Joaquin Phoenix's awe-inspiring performance as Arthur Fleck is nothing short of masterful, making me feel every ounce of pain and despair that his character endures. The gripping narrative explores the depths of a man's mental health struggles in a relentless society, painting a stark and hauntingly realistic portrait of loneliness and alienation. Each scene carries an immense weight that leaves you breathless, traversing the fine line between sympathy and fear. Every tear shed during this incredible cinematic experience felt like a testament to the power of storytelling and its ability to touch our very souls. The sheer brilliance behind Joker 2019 has left an indelible mark on my heart, forever etching itself as an absolute must-see for any lover of intense drama and raw human emotion!

Well, Joker had a happy ending. Why? My theory about the movie: *Arthur Fleck suffered childhood abuse and trauma that created mental and emotional illness. He took care of his mother, worked, sought treatment and tried to get better. Demonstrations grew, along with corruption. After losing everything, Arthur went from being weak, fearful and frustrated to becoming Joker. (A court jester who uses his tragic life as a comedy to please the king and the commoners.) Proving that Arthur has another personality. Why? Well, her pathological laugh faded, her confidence and persuasiveness increased, but for bad. Arthur not only lost everything, he also lost his fight against himself and Joker. He managed to make Gotham worse at first, and then better because he was indirectly responsible for the origin of Batman. Bruce Wayne since childhood had a strange mind, but incredible intelligence (Arthur was no different). Are just opposite sides of the card.*
Quite interesting that it says “The End” despite having a sequel on the cards, I don’t know many other films that have done that.
I love this movie soo much it reminds me of my friend julian

The killing joke.
I wish there were a version without music, just him mumbling the lyrics to see how creepy it is. Music may begin in the next shot as he walks out
I can't wait for the sequel. I'm sure that when Joker meets Harley, he's thinking about killing her too. He will have a knife or a piece of glass hidden and before he pulls it out, Harley says something that sparks his interest. Either her being interesting in a joke or her showing she's not too different from him.
Maybe this is just me looking into things too deeply, but I'd like to think at least part of "the joke" Joker was laughing at involved the lyric " Some people get their _kicks stomping_ on a _dream_ ".
The Joker probably realizes the therapist's dream was to help redeem violent criminals, but in reality, her dream is about to get "stomped on" just like Arthur's dreams were stomped on for his entire life, leading to his transformation into The Joker.
Figuratively, he is going to "stomp on her dreams" by proving to her that some criminals cannot be redeemed. Some criminals are just too far gone, and if you lower your guard because you are trying to help them, they'll take the opportunity to end your life.
Also, based on the blood on Joker's shoes, he most likely both figuratively and literally "kicked/stomped on her dreams" by stomping on her head, where dreams come from, until she was dead.
Second favorite joker behind heath ledger
