- This tutorial will show you how to set up Discord server permissions for your members, moderators, admins and boosters. We cover our recommended server and channel permissions for all Discord roles and channel types, keeping the setup as easy as possible.
On Discord there are two types of permissions; role permissions and channel permissions. Role permissions control what a member with that role can do in the server. Whereas channel permissions control what a member can do in that specific channel. There are also category permissions, which are identical to channel permissions and only affect permissions if a channel is synced to the category.
You will want to clear all server permissions for most roles in your server. The only roles that will need server permissions are admin, moderator, bot and friend roles. All other server roles can receive their permissions though the channels and categories.
Primarily using channel or category permissions makes it easier to control what each member can do. This allows you to specifically cater each channel in your server to the desired purpose.
Bots will typically receive their permissions through roles that are automatically created when you ad them to the server. Because of this you won't need to worry about role permissions for a bot role.
This Discord server permission guide also shows you individual settings for each type of channel you will have in your server.
Discord server permissions can be adjusted as you like, giving more freedom or restrictions for members as you like.

Permissions are complicated to get the hang of, once you do though they’re easy. It’s like a switch flips and you’ll understand it all suddenly. Templates are a great help for setting up servers.
I know this video came out a year ago but I did have a question. If all server role permissions apart from admin+, why do you deny access to the @ everyone role in each channel? The server role permission is already "/". If you apply " / " for the @ everyone's channel permission, it will deny access without requiring "x" which causes some issues with certain bots.
Hope u become a Big CZcamsr with 10.5million subscriberz iloveit
Thank you. This video is great! However i still struggle with screen sharing permissions. I have a "live" channel that i only want to be able to join myself. I can drag people in. However, people that i drag in can't share their own screen/game. It only holds for a few seconds. I already checked role permissions and voice channel on 'video sharing' and those are green. What am i missing?
thanks a lot this video helps me a lot thank you so much for your effort. what are
promotional channels and like what? thanks.
Thank you
This is a awesome video! But I'm having a problem and I wanna see if you can help, if you don't mind ofc! I have a private channel, and I only want members that have a specific role to join it, but I only want mods/ the owners to be able to give it to people,
bro what have u done to my discord server
Liked for the fact this guy said skip to the part which you want.
You really don't have to do the permissions channel by channel unless it's a channel created for a specific purpose where it needs restricted access. In which case you can change those specific permissions. The rest will be default based on the roles.
Does it matter if I don’t have the roles in the order u have?
How do you make it so people can’t be used by members?
how do i make specific roles not able to use bot commands in a discord server?
how to/can i prevent a member from having colored/highlighted message boxes?
There's this person in a group that is really attention seeking so i created a role to restrict his access
whats the best permission for what roles tho
How do i know if moderators role can change other people roles?
thx
What about a certain channel ban role?
Hey.. I am having a bit of trouble setting the muted role in channels. All my channels on my server are kept on private due to the verification channels. Can you please help me :(
Yeah, it should still work the same. Go through and add the muted role to each channel permission with the send messages option disabled. If that's not working it's because of conflicting settings. You can have channels private while still enabling the everyone role to send messages.
the member adn muted role has the same premisions
Hey there! First of all, tnx for this vid!) Second of all, I have a problem, and I rly hope you could help me out. The thing is that my admins can give only particular roles to another users, when I want them to be able to give all the roles that axist in my Discord channel, but I dont know how do do/fix that. Could you please help me?)
They can only give roles that are lower than their role.
Why would you let everyone send messages in the bot and channels 17:40
There's something I want to ask. When you talk about the moderator role privileges, is it possible for them to do a hierarchy system. Example, Rank 3 members can kick rank 2 or 1 members, but rank two can only kick rank one members? A friend of mine wants a set up like that.
No i dont think so sadly. maybe with a bot.
I viewed my server as if i would have the mod role, and it gave me the option to delete the server. Is there any way i can make it where that doesn’t come up at all under server settings?
I don't believe that changes based on the role you're viewing the server as. The view server as option just shows you the channels ect. As long as the moderators don't have the administrator permission then your server should be fairly safe.
I appreciate the step by step instructions, but after watching this video i don't understand any of it, and feel even more confused than before. To my thinking, channel roles should be automatic. I can't believe it is so much work just to set up one channel. I see servers with dozens of channels, it must have taken a year to set them up.
They may use category to settle channels
If you are the owner but you need/want admins, will your role be above them or you'll have the same role as admins? And if so what permissions should be on Owner vs Admin ?
Owner in top then admin
Yes
Can someone give me the timestamp where he makes the audit role because im watching his video called how to add and setup MEE6 discord bot
sorry, which role are you looking to create? Did you mean Admin?
@@slurptech sorry I meant audit log channel
یه جوریی توضیح میدادی انگار داری معادله ریاضی حل میکنی یا اتم میشکافی کاش معلمای من انقدر خوب توضیح میدادن. در کل ممنون کارمو راه انداخت
I can't understand how the muted role works
Lemme ask my question -
If there are 2 different role permissions conflicting with each other , then allowing the permission will get priority , then if a person has a member and a muted role and the send messages permission is enabled in member role but disabled in muted role , then allowing the send messages permission should get priority, so how are they muted😢please tell me anyone
i allow the send message option on the @everyone role so the muted role overwrites that permission.
Make sure the Muted role is higher than the Member role in the Roles section. The order of the roles is how priority is given.
if they even can

It waaasssss helpful but.. ummm wot if im on mobile?
its the same lol
11.58
3:25 I see, they moved "Allow anyone to @mention this role" from "Permissions" to "Display". Stupidcord
half the information is clear, but the rest is hidden and makes everything meaningless
2:23 doesnt even tell what permissions to give thats cringe
No permissions. That’s the default after the previous step
bro u ruined my server
Sorry you’re having issues. This won’t ruin a server it’s a guide to the one of the safer methods to set up the permissions. What are the issues you’re having?
