Also should not there government be at fault for not caring about these people? What about the businesses that are allowing this to happen. One way to help is threw legal ways. There government needs to make rules to help those workers. Simply by not buying products is not going to really have an impact. Even if it did it would take a while. @@dianahockins717 while skilled work is indeed a lot better paid for than labour work in general, labour work is definitely also work, and it is how many people make their living. to say that labour is not worthy of a living wage is a quite harsh- working in a mine like this is essentially like working in McDonald's as a cashier, not many skills are required and the wages are certainly not great, but one should be able to at least survive on the wages.
I personally don't care for makeup as much as many others do, but the demand for such a product is not the root of the issue. In an ideal world, no workers should be exploited regardless of what material/service they produce/provide. The real question is, how can we design the industry in such a way that there are incentives for companies to improve the situations for these people at the very end of their production line.
This is a supply chain problem that needs a political solution. The only way I see it happen is when the government adopt a standard to certify only those company with adequate working environments, and limited rights to sales to these companies.

Standards will be pricing (factoring in ethnical labor salary while still being competitive so that companies won't look elsewhere to purchase). 5yr, 10 yr, 20yr economic plan for the country. Is the country planning one of its main economy to be based on mining?? If so, will the mining be a government run enterprise or private? after this is established (their future plans), then crack down on corruption and building up a system for mining. If there's no foresight and people in government are in it for themselves or doing to milk out as much $$ in each political term then the government and it's goals and values are unstable, selfish, and short term. Micas are used in a variety of products ranging from drywalls, paints, fillers, especially in parts for automobiles, roofing and shingles, electronics etc. The mineral is also used in cosmetics to add "shimmer" or "frost." It's hard to know which electronic parts to steer clear from, but certainly we can live without shimmery makeup. The bottom line is to research fair trade products in order to not support industries that are cruel to humans. We can do the same for animals. It doesn't have to be one or the other.

The Mayan pyramids often have sheets of mica sandwiched between the upper levels of their construction as discovered when the Pyramid of the sun at Teotihuacan was excavated in 1906. The Mica Temple is situated around a patio about 1000 feet south of the west face of the Pyramid of the Sun. Directly under a floor paved with heavy rock slabs, archaeologists financed by the Viking Foundation excavated two massive sheets of mica ninety feet square perfectly cut and placed beneath the rock slabs. All Mica has a specific chemical signature like copper where you can pinpoint the mine it came from. The mica slabs at Teotihuacan originate 2000 miles away in Brazil. Even though the locality of Teotihuacan has a plentiful supply of native mica, the thermal resistance mineral wise is much less than the Brazilian variety. This variety is also highly used as a moderator in nuclear reactions. It is also used in many of Nasa's space applications, Mars Rovers, space telescopes, tiling on the space shuttles. Also in colliders like that of the Large Hadron Collider.

Go their website to check out if they have any sustainability statement- if they don't that's the first tell tale sign that they may not be ethical (eg. SG cosmetic brands who writes "cruelty-free" on their website but says nothing about how they define "cruelty-free" or how they are doing it lol, I saw some being like that zzz). 2nd is to see if they have any actions that they claim to take to ensure the ethical production & sourcing of their raw materials (eg. sourcing from countries with stricter labour policies like USA for mica, using synthetic mica, obtaining Fair Trade certification, etc.), 3rd is finding any other possible evidences that the brand is/is not doing what it claims (eg. getting called out by Greenpeace, etc. activists). Tho extra research doesn't guarantee it's 100% ethical, it reduces possibility of it being unethical :) what's more for big brands there's q some activists out there talking about them if they have issues! it won't be too hard to find. It's extra work for sure, but I think it would be better than nothing

I disagree with the man attempting to define his version of what child labor is or is not. Here, sure, grow up on a farm and you get up at a young age around 7 or 8 and you help out with some things around the farm. It's wonderful for children to learn responsibility at a young age to prepare them for adulthood. However, the deplorable conditions these children are in are what crosses a line as well as the amount of hours. They shouldn't have to sacrifice their childhood and time for more extensive education to feed themselves. There is enough wealth in this world, no part of humanity should have to live like this.

There are very few brands which don't use Mica, but at least there are a couple of brands which use ethically sourced mica like Lethal Cosmetics for example. You can still use make-up without causing this kind of suffering, just keep yourself informed.
