Restoring the Original Xbox - Retro Console Restoration & Repair

- Restoring the original Xbox. In this episode I will restore this old Xbox. The console is very dusty and it has some problems, but nothing beyond restoration. The disc drive is stuck and it won't save the time and date if it's unplugged. Both are common problems with the Xbox and pretty easy to repair. This unit has been unused for along time and it also needs to be cleaned from all the dust on the inside and outside. I wanted to publish this episode right before Christmas have got this gaming console for Christmas almost 20 years ago.
I wanted to keep the stickers at the bottom intact so I used isopropyl alcohol to soften the glue. This allowed me to lift the sticker with a sharp blade without ruining it. Fun fact: the bottom says opening the console will void the warranty. Of course the warranty is over but eve if the console was new it wouldn't. The FTC has deemed warranty stickers illegal in the US with some exceptions. Nevertheless, it was fun to try to get in unnoticed.
The disassembly was pretty straightforward. A few screws here and there and a ton of cables to wiggle free. After everything was out of the body I opened the disc drive. I didn't see any tutorials for this type of drive. so I had to figure that out myself. Microsoft used different drives in different versions of the original Xbox. The disc drive is stuck for one of two reasons. Either the rubber band is too stretched and it slips of there is too much dust. I shrunk the band by boiling it for a minute or two. I blew all the dust off and whatever was left was cleaned off with isopropyl alcohol.
I also wanted to replace the condensator which is used to keep the time and date if the xbox is unplugged. Condensator is basically a small battery.. Microsoft used cheap condensator for this and they start leaking eventually. Condensator contains acid which causes corrosion and might ruin the motherboard so I had to remove the condensator anyways. I replaced it with similar but different looking condensator. Only in v1.6 xbox the condensator won't start leaking. The corrosion was removed by washing the board with isopropyl alcohol.
On the board there was also heat sink to cool the CPU and GPU. Between heat sink and the board there is always thermal past or thermal pad that is used to transfer heat. If there is air gaps the heat wont transfer efficiently enough. Also if the thermal paste dries, that can cause overheating so I replaced the paste. It's important to clean the old paste. A small drop of paste in the middle of the CPU is the best way to apply it. Some people draw X or something else silly but that might cause air bubbles. A simple drop is the best based on my research.

This doesn't seem simple at all however, it's becoming increasingly difficult to repair new items nowadays

BillG left Microsoft in 2020 and doesn't give a sh*t if you repair your old Xbox
I think there was some government decision on the label crap around the time this video was released . It's stupid legal mumbojumbo . The government should have went after Microsoft for all their lousy red-ring consoles . The 360 far outselling PS3 is misleading . Alot of their 360 consoles manufactured were REPLACEMENTS .

Wow this takes me back. I got one of these in 2004 and played it for years. I even got it modded with a chip and was able to play old Nintendo and PS games on it. It was pretty much a mini PC for it's time.
Woah that’s cool are you able to use the modded chip on other game consoles? It would be cool to play super Mario maker 2 on a PlayStation 4. (Even though I don’t have a ps4)
@@snakeproductions01 I doubt it, but once I got into PC gaming I got away from consoles. I'm sure there's hacks out there to do it though.

I love how when you were restoring the Gameboy you said I am not comfortable with electronics and now you took apart this Xbox so easily.
Yes. A lot of improvement has happened since then. But sometimes it's still nerve wracking to take these apart. My god the memories. That fan kept me warm. Crazy to see how complex the build was vs the N64 Restoration.
I've still got mine, and it still works. I even hooked it up last year with an adaptor to make it look halfway decent on a modern TV and played a few of my old games on it. A great console with some truly groundbreaking games that hold up well today. I'm glad Microsoft is pretty good (though certainly not perfect) about backwards compatibility, too, because I can play a lot of those old games on my Series X.
Mine is from 2001 launch and it failed.
Fortunately I found someone to repair it and now it runs like new. Glad they were able to save it.

Man, this console it's huge! I had the opportunity to play a few games on an friend's console back in the days, it was pretty good. Nice video!
This was the first console I played on. Got it for free from somewhere in 2006. Later we got a ps3 however because my friend had a ps2 and I liked his console more. Seeing this one being restored, brings some memories of having the console.
I'm still fascinated by the complexity of these machines even though they're outdated
Off topic but your pfp is my fav dragon priest mask
Its because that think is a literal tank, was considered a gigant if you compared with other consoles of the time, and it allowed 1TB of memory if you know it how. The only problem the console had was the clock capacitor wich killed the console from inside, making imposible to repair if you waited too long, thanks to this video and a little help from 4chan I could repair my Xbox before it was 2 late. Anyways I have to full fixit because I didnt clean it at all and the disc driver still doing weird things, so I have to see how to full repair it anyways (Plus Im a monkey with a wrench and fucked some screws, aluminium and get rid of 4 screws and one of the aluminium of the lector because Im a fucking disaster. Anyways. It works again, almost proberly when I give it for dead. Remember. Change the clock or remove it. Depending of the version you just cant remove it so please, search guides and info. And dont be like me. Try to put everything where it have to be.
Because old technology tends to be complex and bulky while newer techs are made to be simpler and slimmer, in my opinion ps1 and ps2 machine layout is much more complicated than ps3 or ps4 ones, although the casing is harder to open in newer gen
@@kawabatayuri then again though, The PS5 is pretty huge compared to the OG Xbox
Pc builders: "dont put to much paste on"
This guy: "so anyways, i started blasting"
@José Antonio He put a lot lol
he blasted more than frank reynolds himself
If you look at how much paste he put on the chip on the right @ 14:03 he put too much. That amount of paste will spread all the way out to the edges, yes, but when the heat sink gets really hot then the thermal paste expands even more, so this amount of paste will possibly be leaking onto the circuit board, which is dangerous considering how sensitive they are to damage.
@@BronzeBoxer_ It'll be fine. Thermal paste is non-conductive unless you specifically search for conductive TIM. Better to have a little too much than not enough.
@@BronzeBoxer_ this was debunked several years ago. You can apply a literal tube of thermal paste and it'll be no different. You will only run into issues if you use conductive pastes or liquids or straight up spew it directly into the socket, which could be pretty difficult to clean.
