Restoring Extremely Yellowed Sega Dreamcast - Retro Console Restoration

- Sega Dreamcast restoration - In this video I will restore Dreamcast console launched by Sega in 1999. I bought this yellowed console and a game from Japan. This is a e version of the console, which can be seen from the red Dreamcast logo. Dreamcast has been one of the most requested consoles in the comments even though back in the day it was a flop.
For the disassembly of the Sega Dreamcast I used a phillips tip for my screwdriver. For the firs 3 screws I needed a screwdriver that didn’t have changeable bit because the holes for the screws were so deep and narrow. This console has so many different screws that I used an ice cube tray to hold the screws separately. This also helps me to remember what came from where because I can just put everything back together in reversed chronological order.
Once the top part is open you have to be careful to not turn the device upside down without holding the disk reader, because the top part of it is loose and if it falls it might rip out the cables on it or cause other damage in general the disk reader is a sensitive part so you want to be careful with it if you open it up like I did.
Once everything was pulled apart, I looked for any corrosion and dirt on the boards. Mainly I had some slight corrosion on the power unit. I used pressurized air to blow off any loose dust etc. and then I used isopropyl alcohol to clean off the corrosion and dirt. In general, there was not much dust or damage, it could be that this console was not used much ever. It also didn’t have the usual signs of previously opened consoles. I also cleaned the disk readers lens and the connection ports with alcohol because because on the very first try (which I didn’t film) I had some connection issue with my av-cable.
To get rid of the yellowing on the parts I put the parts in a bath with 12% hydrogen peroxide and left them in UV-light for around 2 days. Everything else was done much faster but the really yellowed parts of the body took ages to get done. After this I washed and dried the parts (this is very important). If moisture is left in the shell it will start corroding the parts again.
Thanks for watching! If you have any friends who had Sega Dreamcast, consider sharing this with them. Bellow are some affiliate link that support this channel and help you to figurer out what tool I use for my projects. It’s not a comprehensive list because a lot of my tools I have bought locally.

When the robot uprising comes, this man will be spared.
“Is your plastic yellowed? Do you need some soldering? Can’t find anyone to clean your components? Come see the Last Man on Earth at the Tinkering Spa!”
Because he will be their slave.
Or they fear/respect him enough to keep him alive
@@eternalflame156 that was more what I was thinking. They see that he gives their ancestors so much care and reverance that they spare him. Maybe keep him like a pet too.
Exactly
Finally, someone who knows how to tighten screws into plastic properly. You turn it backwards until you feel a click, then you tighten it. Otherwise, you will start making a new thread and possibly break the plastic. This guy actually does is correctly.
You can screw it differently without breaking shit
omg i didnt know
Instructions unclear got penis stuck in plastic screw hole and tested new threads
@matt fahringer Yes
I never knew this - but I have disassembled and reassembled lots of things with screws into plastic and never broken stuff. I think his method is very smart and eliminates the risk of breakage, but even if you don’t do what he does, the risk of making a new thread and breakage is still low as long as you use a light touch.
I'm 61 and never had a console for video game nor a game boy or whatever. Why do I watch all of these videos?
Because I love cleaning very much and the fact that even damaged equipment can be repaired and be used again. As a bonus: This videos are kind of a meditation for me after coming home from work.

So emotionally invested to the point that I can’t sleep because i need to know if the toothbrush he uses is soft or firm..............
Pretty sure its firm. The bristles seem pretty stiff
Actually. I just watched him restore a Super Nintendo from June of 19 and he used a kids toothbrush. So maybe he uses soft. Or he felt that didnt do the job so he went to firm. I know im not helping but im trying lol
Maybe both for different scenarios

Its doesn't look to bad, but I think the off white looks better imo
The Dreamcast was so ahead of its time. I'm lucky enough to have had one when they came out. The integration of the mini 8-bit games into the memory cards were so cool. I wish more developers took chances like Sega did back then.
I had a gaming pc running emulation of Dreamcast , lucky you. I never owned one.
I agree. I loved my dreamcast so much. Wish i still had it.
Some games had interesting differences on the Sega Saturn. Resident Evil 1 had some different monster locations, and the graphics and colour of various areas looked a little bit different.
Yep. Wish they were still here today
@@juliashenandoah3965 That's right! I forgot about that!

That was yellowed? I thought it was a special gold dreamcast
Edit:this comment is 2 years old at this point, how did become my most liked comment? why is it still getting replies?!
The Dreamcast suffers from this yellowing plastic issue. Even the SNES has this issue.

I spent the last third of the video thinking: "it's still kinda yellow", then I realized I had the blue filter activated on my phone
Ha! Ditto until I just read your comment! Good looking out!🤣
It is! And I don't have any filter activated. He should have bleached it a little longer actually.

blue filters are pointless.

I loved the Dreamcast. First time we had proper arcade quality games in our homes. It also introduced the internet to a lot of people with its awesome dial up browser...Phantasy star online was beyond amazing.
I'd honestly like to see a dreamcast painted in a similar caramel color scheme. It was surprisingly good looking.
It's funny how everyone thinks this was in a smokers home due to it being yellow... the reason the older systems turn yellow over time is from a product called bromine that they had put in to make the system more heat resistant. But overtime it has a reaction that actually brittles the plastic and causes the yellowing if exposed to UV radiation (sunlight).
too much science bro
@@ale122491 For you: Bromine + Sunlight = Its yellow.
if uv tun that yello why he use uv to clean it?
@@mudzanin9986 it's to activate the hydrogen peroxide to bleach it faster. so you'll have bleached plastic and it's even more brittle but at least not yellow
How to get rid of it? Sunlight.
Perfect video. No background music, a few important subtitles and an amazing skill. Thanks for your time and effort.
Yeah, no cheap annoying buzzing background music
I thought that it’d been painted gold before I read the title.
As much as I love things in original condition, I think I like the new golden brown color, oddly. It reminds me of a Twinkie.

When this guy eats toast, there are never any crumbs anywhere. Try and find them. You won't.

These Console Restoration videos are fascinating. Thanks!
I've got to say that I am extremely amazed at how the yellow comes out. I need to try this.
I've got my original dreamcast hut it's not yellowed at all. My NES has a little amount.
This just blows my mind lol
That peroxide plus UV reaction is pure magic
@Julius Järvenkimmel In how much time? Are you implying that the yellowing will be faster? Because otherwise if the time scale is the same I don't care. You still have doubled the "good looking" life of the console
@@MrMasodelSaggio/videos/videos Depends on sunlight exposure. Keep it away from any direct or indirect sunlight and it will last for decades, just like the original gray color on the bottom of the console.
Maybe we can protect from yellowing with a UV protectant spray?
Julius Järvenkimmel won’t last if your console is getting kissed by the sun. Very effective method.
@@ErebosGR direct sunlight is fine as long as you don't have a window in the way. Direct sunlight fixes yellowing.

Smokin and playin.
He shits on some of them though 😂😂
@@statusquo9520 It has nothing to do with smoking. It's the bromine added to the plastic as a fire retardant that reacts to sunlight which causes the yellowing.
Jesse. We need to cook.
@@reallydontlikethem You're goddamn right! ;)
Excellent work!! So smoothing and enteraining to see the console come back to life.
My dad has one. Looks brand new and still works! I just brought it up the other day and played it.
amazing how easily you can reverse the yellowing process.
this is scientific and it's so amaizing ⚗️
It's not permanent though. Parts will yellow again in a year or so. Nothing can be done about it unfortunately.
In theory plastic will yellow back slower if instead of UV light exposure, sous-vide stick 50C bath method is used. It gives overall better results.
@@sarmatiko Do you have a liink to check on the method?
@@collomps yeah it's described in Deskthority "Retrobright 2.0" thread: deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=19220
It's not "Reversed", the plastic will 'yellow' again sooner.
Dreamcast: Chain Smoker Edition.

Dreamcast most underrated console ever. It was awesome as was this restoration.👍🏴

One of the most underrated consoles of all time....
Honestly the yellow/gold coloring looks pretty cool.
There was the gamecube that sported an orange color, or the exclusively orange xbox that's hard to find, but I get whatcha mean. Unfortunately, more modern consoles have lost that inner kid and now dawn the age of black. Colored consoles were pretty quirky and cool truthfully
Eric Saldana Those were just bright orange more than they were that goldish color.
And this my friends was the only example of the strictly limited "Butterscotch" Dreamcast. Only one was known to be around.
